5 out of 5 stars Isabelle is the best.......2004-04-27

I'm a french girl leaving in L.A and I didn't know Isabelle Antena before this compilation. Not only her track (the opening one) is the best of the CD , but I discovered her best of album (l'alphabet du plaisir) and she's one of the greatest bossa singer I've ever heard.A real diva.

5 out of 5 stars Good CD........2002-06-11

While I profess to know very little about music, I think I have good taste. I love this cd, every track from start to finish seems to find the right blend between groovy/relaxing. Would highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2002-03-25

Another one of those trip-hop/jazz compilations that just won't leave the CD player. An eclectic blend of smooth cuts from Thievery Corp, Nightmares On Wax, and others, perfect for coming down from a fast night of drinking too much and sobering out. The song by Cool Blue (track 9, not 10) is just so chill, it sends shivers and Dub Tractor's "104 Dub" has that ambient groove to it...way cool.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2002-03-12

This CD has been in almost constant rotation in the CD player at our house since purchase. It flows really well, each song is very different, but very interesting, and they all seem to complement each other. Can't wait to try the other ESL offerings.

4 out of 5 stars Sizzles, fizzles, then sizzles........2002-02-06

I was interested in this track as I knew of Batu and some of the other artists featured. But to be honest, the only tracks I listen to on this album are the first two. The Isabelle Antena track is incredibly smooth while the Batu track seems to teleport you back in time to Brazil in the 70's early 80's. But from then on up for a while the album goes into a 70's sort of lounge feel, which isn't really bad considering that's the way the album's supposed to go. Just not my cup of tea.

So if you're looking for something like the first two tracks, where are heavy Bossa Nova/tropical feel, you get it in the first two tracks only. Otherwise I'd recommend Jet Society instead - and if you have that, Boss-a-Troniq (1+2), Brazilectro (1+2) or Hedkandi's Serve Chilled Volume 3. The rest of this album is solid with some ups - notably Shantel and Thievery Corporation's own track in it.

4 out of 5 stars Old Fashioned Sincerity.......2006-12-30

This is not the best recording of Messiah but it is by no means a disaster. Susskind was an able conductor with a valid view of this great piece. The recording from the 1950s is more than adequate (there is some roughness in the treble but it is full and clear - though some edits are very obvious indeed). The orchestra is excellent and the choir sing well. The soloists - all of them - are superb, among the very best in any version of Messiah! Susskind's tempos are slow by modern standards but there is good rhythmical bounce and a genuine sense of the greatness of the piece. If you can adjust to the broad tempos and the big scale conception then you will discover important aspects of this masterpiece in this performance - and the set costs next to nothing!

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst recordings ever made.......2006-05-10

This is only my second one star review. And I am rather generous with stars. But this recording is just horrible, especially considering that all of the participants are legendary musicians. First of all, this is extremely old fashioned Handel. The textures are way too heavy for music of the baroque. But worst of all, the performance just sits there like mud on your tires that won't come off. Yes, the price is very low, but whatever you do, do not buy this recording.

    2 out of 5 stars Pete's Dad.......2005-12-11

I have had a CD of the London Philharmonic version of the Messiah conducted by Fredrick Jackson for several years and enjoyed listening to it. However, the quality of the recording leaves something to be desired.

4 out of 5 stars When this all meant something.......2007-04-24

This is an effort by an aspiring Anthony Green and one of his early bands. I am generally pleased with most offerings from Green and I must say I did enjoy this as well. But compared to his other work it pales in comparison. It is an obscure ride, with songs like 'Flower, fist, and beastial wail,' you're never quite sure what they're talking about. I still enjoy going back to it every now and then as it holds a certain charm, in fact it is arranged very nicely, starting of with the slow, entrancing 'show your teeth,' then gradually building into some more fast paced songs which do include some well done screaming.

If you're an Anthony Green fan you will most likely warm up to this album, as long as you don't take it too seriously.

      2 out of 5 stars Practice.......2004-07-27

Audience of One gave their best shot in making something work. I don't believe that the vocals delivered by Anthony Greene were as quite as n'sync with the rest of the music. The band could not find proper ways to tie in transitions betweens steady beats, sparatic lead-ins, or chaotic explosive harmony. The entire album was a failed, but valiant rookie attempt at polishing anything from a rough garage-style sound. In Anthony Greene's second go at finding his place in the sun, he must have landed a godsend with the formation of Saosin. Pro-active listeners who were left starved with the mere fifteen minuete of Saosin with their EP; Translating the Name; will not find compensation with the sound or vocals in this album.

      5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Sound.......2001-06-12

I absolutely love this CD. The lead singer Anthony has a an amazing voice. The way he can scream those notes on key is just mezmorizing. Track 5 is my absolute favorite. There is so much heart on this album. Anthony also appears on Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer's album, and once again rocks. This album is essential to your indie rock CD collection

BYG/Actuel released an impressive array of recordings in 1969/1970. None was more compelling than this effort by Sunny Murray. Along the lines of East Coast Colors on Dave Burrell's High Won/High Two release, Sunny's complete command over jazz cymbals will astonish you. For the recording of "Giblet" alone, this album is worth the price. The tenor team of Byard Lancaster and Ken Terroade, who never received their due in fame, will propel your ears to new levels, led by Sunny's unique and forceful drumming. Tired of "fours"? This is the cure.

5 out of 5 stars A truly energetic and emotional work of music.......2002-02-01

It is nearly impossible explaining to someone how great something is, if they have not already experienced it. For example, how would you go about telling a friend the thrill of skydiving, if they had not already experienced it? Similiarly, it is difficult to describe how good this band really is. The music is for the most part hardcore, ranging from fast guitar riffs, to slow and heavy break downs. After listening to the first song on this cd, I was completely hooked on this band. The music is catchy, but in no point on the cd does the band have a "poppy" sound. It is truly hardcore, with amazing vocals backing up the already tough sound. The screams are reminiscent of bands such as Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth, only not quite as rough. My only complaint was that I thought there could have been a little more actual singing, but this is just my opinion. To sum it up, this band is amazing, and you need to experience them, whether you are fan of hardcore, or any other type of punk music.

Ok, so let's move beyond the reviewer who felt the need to look up every artist with "cotton" in their name. I get the feeling his opinion should be overlooked. And completely. This is a great release, though nowhere near as strong as their later work. Songs such as Keepsakes and While I was sleeping hint at the direction they were about to head in, but the rest is some very strong late 90's emo. Pick it up if you're a fan of the genre.

      2 out of 5 stars Blah.......2002-11-06

I listened to the samples, because someone gave the album 5 stars... And I was bored, so I decided to see how many musicians had the word "cotton" in their stage name. Anyway... I haven't heard the album, but I know it doesn't deserve anything over 2 stars (if you see the big picture). The other reviewer is either a friend of the band, in the band, or insane. I think anyone can figure that out... I just get irritated when I waste my time cli8cking on something and end up reading a b.s. review. But I guess I'm really wasting more of my time writing this... bye... on to pick out the "cottons".

      5 out of 5 stars Wow they're good.......2001-04-13

I saw this band live last week. I showed up late and I was just about to leave when this band jumped up on stage and began to play. Wow...I have never been so impressed with a stage show in my entire life. They were really into their music. It seemed to me that they didn't just show up to get a few quick bucks. The vocalist put so much emotion into his singing and everybody was just so good...and wow I can't even tell you how much you should buy this CD.
