Whether as a trumpeter or singer, Chet Baker was always the subject of controversy among jazz listeners, a victim of fashion who was doomed in his lifetime to be either over- or underrated. These Pacific Jazz recordings from the mid-1950s present Baker the instrumentalist at the height of his popularity. While his coolly passive treatments of ballads like "Imagination" and "Stella by Starlight" may play to the languid stereotype of West Coast jazz, there's boppish fire and invention on the medium- and up-tempo tunes, with Baker emphasizing the middle register that was his forte. Altoist Art Pepper and valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer turn up among the supporting cast, and there's a good choice of material by boppish heads from both coasts, including Carson Smith's "Carson City Stage," Jimmy Heath's "C.T.A.," and Al Haig's "Jumping Off a Clef." --Stuart Broomer

wonderous wide fat luminous sound.......2004-06-29
This review refers to the 20 bit remix only.
First, I should say, I'm really a sucker for good sound. If it doesn't sound good, I don't care much how complex, intricate or technically proficient the playing is. As Jazz goes, it is NOT Baker's best improvization, but it has great sound.
Jazz Musicians playing standards are playing on a continuum between Pop and Free Jazz/Avant-Garde/ and always playing somewhere in between. This album is unabashedly Pop. Here Chet plays these upbeat familiar Boardway show tune standards very close to the melodic line with little invention, as if the trumpet were a lead singer.
But what a singer. His sound here is luminous, like a full moon, a big ripe tomato. I don't think I have ever heard him play with such fullness of tone. Forget all the great trumpet players ever, no one ever recorded an album with this tone! The studio is slightly echoey, that helps. The new remix is a revelation. The sound that could only have been achieved using all vacuum tube equipment in the original recording. (And it sounds best on tube equipment, now.) Very three-dimensional with a deep, wide soundstage.
Herbie Mann has some similar fat and wide flute solos. Bill Evans' piano stays mostly in the background. There are a variety of warm sax solos that could be Zoot Sims or Pepper Adams (no credits on individual songs).
Best song is the swing tempo "Almost Like being in Love".
I avoided this album for years, because it seemed too sweet and Pop, (and be forewarned, it is on the sweet side!) but this new mix shows you how wonderful Chet's tone could be if was recorded (and remixed) right! Chet certainly developed his technique, and produced more intricate, complex and inventive Jazz as he did more albums, but this is worth it just for the tone.
He never sounded quite like this again.
Five stars for sound, two for arrangements & complexity.

Object of beauty.......2006-10-08
Not a typical Baker recording, this beautiful CD contains some of the best-loved show tunes remade in perfectly jazzistic manner.
The brilliant modern-mainstream accompanying crew is already mentioned by previous reviewers so I will only add my opinion that the mix of generations and stlyes is perfect for this "conservative" and beautiful material by Lerner and Loewe.
My favorite on the album is the opening number.
Just for your information.......2004-01-31
This little piece of history was recorded July 22, 1959 in NYC. Besides, Chet Baker the musicians included Herbie Mann, Zoot Sims, Bill Evans, Pepper Adams, Earl May and Clifford Jarvis, which is not bad company.
Show tunes in Jazz!.......2000-03-07
Mr. Baker equits himself handsomely performing jazz versions of these (mostly) well known songs from Broadway plays. The highlight is an eight minute version of "On the Street Where You Live" whic allows Chet to stretch out and play a little. Another excellent rendition is "I've grown accustomed to her Face, which swings and has great accoustics. Good music, great trumpet playing.
