Among the anecdotes in his autobiography, Kiss and Tell, celebrated English guitarist Martin Taylor explains how a Robert Palmer song on a television commercial made Taylor something of a pop star in his homeland. That song, "Johnny & Mary," is the lead-off track on this career overview, which is varied in scope. Taylor performs live, in-studio, solo, with duets, and in a group. The underrated British vocalist Claire Martin is also aboard on an upbeat reading of "Undecided," with Stephane Grappelli adding a spirited violin solo. Grappelli, of course, made Taylor a star in the United States, though as the amazing fluidity and dexterity heard here suggests, he'd have made it anyway. As a guitarist, Taylor abounds throughout these selections--supporting group or not. He's such a good player that it's easy to overlook Taylor's compositional skills, which shine best on the tracks with his Spirit of Django group, like on "Chez Fernand" and "My Vardo." The only downside to this overview of his eight years with Linn is the fact that not one track comes from the brilliant disc "Two's Company." --Mark Ruffin
Product Description
Virtuoso guitarist Martin Taylor first came to prominence in the late 1970s through his collaborations with legendary violinist Stephane Grappelli. Now, he tours the world's concert halls with his dazzling live performances. Although inspired initially by Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, it was to be piano players, most notably Art Tatum and Bill Evans, who caught his imagination and set him on the path of developing his own individual style of solo playing!

Customer Reviews:
Better than the originals .......2007-01-29
I own several DJ Krush albums and love his dark, brooding, trip-hop influenced style. But with Stepping Stones, I found the perfect DJ Krush listening experience. This album is darker and more sinister than his original work. The first CD, Lyricism, is essentially a hip-hop/trip-hop album featuring a number of guest vocalists, including The Roots, Mos Def, Aesop Rock, Anticon, and others. The overall quality of CD #1 is so good that it's hard for me to name any favorite tracks, but #8 and #11 just blow me away. The second CD, Soundscapes, features haunting instrumental remixes of some of Krush's best originals. Again, the overall quality is great, so I won't name any favorite tracks. With this double-CD album, you get two distinctly different listening experiences. Call it hard/soft, active/passive, whatever. The first CD kicks you in the teeth, the second hypnotizes you.
One CD hot, the other not as much........2007-01-23
First, I am a HUGE Krush fan, and have all of his other works (less some singles and foreign releases).
This is a double CD, which is always a plus.
- First CD is LYRICISM, as the name suggests, all the tracks are lyrics, mostly rap/hip-hop. The music is decent, but not up to my expectation of Krush. The remixes of wonderful songs from other CD's (the originals) are not nearly as good, if not lame. I was a little disappointed with this CD. Tracks range from 'meh' to OK.
- Second is SOUNDSCAPES, as the name suggests, this is ambient/chill. In my opinion, this is WAY better than the first CD. Great music (track 12 annoys me, though) overall. If you have a very, very good 2-channel system (not computer speakers, not an iPod dock, but a proper 2-channel audio system), the last track on this CD is a blast (lots of distorted, warped, and bizarre sounds that are a blast to hear).
I hold Krush to a very high, if not unfair, standard (one he has earned by making what I consider some of the best music out there) - and this album falls just a little short. Not bad, but certainly not his best.
I would only recommend this CD to a Krush fan who already has most or all of his other works (DO NOT FORGET TO GET 'Cold Krush Cuts'!!!) and wants more - it satisfies this need perfectly, but certainly should not be someones first experience to DJ Krush.
From the master of the wheels of steel...........2007-01-16
A collection of his best works on 2 discs, remixed, touched up...plenty of outstanding hip hop and dnb beats, with jazz, scratches, cuts and breaks sprinkled throughout, reflecting the wide array of Krush's skills and progression as a musical artist. disc 1 has rappers performing on each track, underground performers that aren't pop but loaded with talent, krush using his skills to bring the best from each. disc 2 are his tracks, the stellar diversity showing whatever interests held krush at that time of creation, destroying any myths of typecasting.
the cd case is well designed, almost entirely black, including the cd's. very understated and subtle overall, sending a message of mystery and strength. removing the cd cover, the booklet unfolds to reveal lyrics for all the tracks off disc 1, a nice treat...this item is very difficult to by in store (i went to virgin megastore) so buy online if possible.
Cold Krushin' ; DJ Krush has arived!.......2006-12-28
Underground legend DJ Krush delivers on this self-mixed compilation of some of his finest work. Divided into two perfectly cohesive cd's, this collection gives us a sampling of his stellar career. Whether you are just becomming familiar with Krush, or down since day one, this is a must purchase for any fan.
Unreal.......2006-09-14
I'm a huge Krush fan & this is definitely his best work in years. This album is ridiculous in its atmosphere. I was a bit disappointed with his last couple of albums, but this more than makes up for it...I think it's his best since Kakusei.
If you are a fan at all, pick this up...you're in for a real treat.

Woody Shaw is no joke...........2006-11-30
I'd venture to say that at this period of his career he was the best trumpet player of all time. He was the total package...composer, brilliant technician, melodic and adventerous.
After hearing this album its hard for me to listen to Freddie Hubbard in the same way any more since Woody takes Freddies style up about 10 notches.
Woody's career was too short and inconsistant to be considered the Greatest of all time but at his peak (on this album) there was nobody better in my opinion.
By the way, I would not have happened upon Woody's music if it hadn't been for sites such as amazon, allmusicguide etc etc.
Needless to say this music isn't advertised at your local record store and is rarely stocked.
I ordered this album a few months ago off of amazon and since then I've picked up pretty much everything I can find with Woody on it.
One last note, the sound quality on this recording is incredible..it sounds better than most studio recordings.
Great post bop jazz.
d--n good recording .......2006-08-20
I listen to this recording at least once a day in between my booker little and lee morgan, art blakey listenings. What a fresh and exciting, sentimental, fiery live recording this one is tops, peace!
Total agreement with all the reviewers!!!!!!.......2006-08-20
It's so nice to read such wonderful, positive words about my homeboy, Woody Shaw! You guys wrote so well, all I can add is, buy the record, and hear what all the fuss is about. The best review, of course, is best post hard bop trumpeter (with the best hard bop trumpeter being Lee Morgan, his idol and my favorite musician). All the cuts are great, but my favorite is "Escape Velocity", the only cut released while Woody was here. It was on Woody III, my favorite Shaw record; if you can, buy that one, too!
OK, I think you get the gist--buy this record!
It's About Freekin' Time. Does not suck. The Anti-Wynbag........2005-12-15
This is a great session. Woody was definitely the anti-Wynbag. Wynbag and his progeny seem rather sterile by comparison.
For whatever reason, Columbia sat on this after the initial vinyl release in '78 and never released it to CD during Woody's lifetime. Mosaic did not include it in the recent Columbia retrospective. I have owned this on vinyl since 1979 or so and I still find it exciting and fresh. Most of this was recorded at the Vanguard. This is a document of a real, working quintet with NY-style hard-edged playing. These guys play like they've been touring together for years. If you're looking for a crappy-ass LA rehearsal band or a college pick-up band or some lame jam session laboring through Stella and Straight no Chaser, then you should give this one a pass.
But that's just my opinion, K?
Jazz Masters of the '70's.......2005-09-02
Bottom line, this records kills. When Wynton and Crouch would have you believing jazz was dead in the '70's, here's proof positive they were dead wrong. It's sad that guys like Woody were toughing it out in the lean years only to be shunned when the post-Wynton twenty something's were getting all the label and media play. I still can't believe Columbia dropped Woody for Wynton! Maybe now they're trying to make up for it. This document will stand the test of time when many of the "neoclassical" recordings have long been forgotten. This is no rehash. This is music by musicians who clearly know the lineage but have developed a sound of their own. You gotta pay some dues for that! Not only are the performances on "Stepping Stones" stellar, the writing is great as well. Like Miles' legendary ensembles of the '50's and '60's these guys sound like a BAND, this ain't no pickup date. If you want to hear cutting edge hard bop by some of the unsung heroes of the art buy this CD immediately. This music deserves to be heard and it's players given their due.

The Great Masters are not all dead.......2005-01-06
Bill Douglas is one of the most creative, talented, and multi-faceted composers of our time. Listening to greats such as Flow Gently, Sweet Avlon and the Autumn Song are almost spiritual experiences. His music is innovative. Note the extraordinary sound produced when he involves both piano and flute in playing the melody. It is remarkable in that I would never have expected it to work and produce such a moving effect. The subtle rythm sounds are lost on first hearing, leaving much to be discovered in listening again and again. Some of his solo piano work is his most melodic and memorable and I look forward to this new CD with great enthusiasm!
To know Bill Douglas.......2004-08-22
If you want beauty at it's utmost, then you have found it with Stepping Stones. An acoustic version of some his finest work is simply as beautiful as his ensemble work. Being fortunate enough to experience his music by playing it makes it all the more worthwhile. You will not be dissapointed. Sit back and let his music take you into the world of melodic mastery, he is THE BEST.

Joan Tower's music makes some demands on listeners, but it always rewards your attention. These are mostly pictorial pieces, with visual imagery in their content and titles. For example, you might not be able to see the exact image Tower describes just from hearing the String Quartet Night Fields, but the impression of rippling wheat in the darkness makes great sense after you've heard the piece. For listeners with even a mild sense of adventure, I recommend Tower's music highly. And if you like to hear music that challenges the players even more than the listeners, you'll definitely enjoy hearing what these fine musicians do to bring Tower's ideas to life. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
A classic.......2006-02-20
I am very surprised that I am the first to review this CD. It is one of my all-time favorites. Joan Tower is one of the most prominent voices in classical music today. Early in her career Tower’s music was very serial. Later however she broke with the serial movement and began righting in a more organic style; often drawing her inspiration from nature. This CD includes her famous Black Topaz, a chamber music piece for percussion winds and piano. Trís Lent, which is dedicated to the composer Messiaen, is also a true masterpiece. As for the three other compositions all are very skillfully dun, although they are not Joan Towers most important compositions. All this is performed to the highest level of musicianship. This is definitely a must have CD.

STEPS WORTH FOLLOWING.......2006-06-27
I'm surprised to find so few reviews for this unique singer here. I don't often write reviews but this space ought to be filled. If you haven't heard Wendy Matthews do yourself a favour! She has a refreshing sound that washes over & through you. Her version of 'The Day You Went Away' is so sublimely restrained it's a thing of beauty, testament to it's number one position on the charts (1992 Australia). Canadian born, her music is at times infused with haunting North American Indian references. It's pure, relevant and classy pop. You won't find vacuous material here, which is why I've given this collection five stars. If you like 'Stepping Stones' then you really can't overlook her memorable debut album 'Emigré' (1990), or 'Lily' (1992), multi-platinum sellers here in Australia.

Product Description
A fine collection of euphonium solos for the aspiring euphonium soloist. All of these solos are on state contest lists, and make for great college audition material. Also included are eight solos for the younger musician!
Customer Reviews:
It's alright........2007-04-06
I've listened to enough professional euphonium players to know that there are much, much better recordings out there. His style throughout the entire album is consistent, which is a problem when you're going from a modern piece to a romantic piece. It bothered me to hear such a mediocre performance of such great pieces of music.
Educational Artistry.......2006-12-16
In the world of classical euphonium recordings, Pat Stuckemeyer's new educational disc, "Stepping Stones for Euphonium," volume one, represents a unique and practical offering. Stuckemeyer and collaborative pianist Ellen Bottorff combine their talents to create a product that both entertains and educates. Unlike most other recordings, on which euphonium artists offer virtuoso performances of new and challenging repertoire, performances intended to display their abilities and dazzle their listeners, this CD offers excellent performances of works of standard euphonium literature.
As the title suggests, these "Stepping Stones" are solo pieces regularly performed by young players, from beginners through high school age. The pieces on this CD appear regularly on state solo contest and honor band audition lists, and have been used for decades by teachers across the world. Stuckemeyer's stated goal for recording this CD was to aid young players in their development. So often, young musicians listen to recordings of repertoire so far beyond their current abilities that while they may be inspired, they are not able to actively model their own playing after what they hear. "Stepping Stones" changes that. Young euphonium players who listen to this recording hear exciting, artistic performances of the same music they are currently working on.
Stuckemeyer performs the works on this recording with a clean, clear, present sound, a model for young players to imitate. He and Bottorff take no artistic liberties with any of the works, choosing instead to present them exactly as they appear on the printed pages. This does not diminish the artistry of their playing. The works themselves range from standards of the advanced high school player's repertoire - the Haddad Suite for Baritone, for example - to eight short selections appropriate for younger musicians. The CD also features a new work for euphonium, a beautiful lyrical piece by Noah Taylor, commissioned especially for "Stepping Stones."
Excellent recordings of beginning and intermediate euphonium repertoire are few and far between; many of the pieces recorded here have not been recorded before. This CD will be extremely valuable for private teachers and their students, and for music educators with students preparing for honor band auditions, solo contests, or college entrance auditions. Pat Stuckemeyer is currently launching an online classroom, to be used in conjunction with this CD. This will be another major resource for younger players, offering advice and practice suggestions for mastering the repertoire.

Album Description
Virtuoso guitarist Martin Taylor first came to prominence in the late 1970s through his collaborations with legendary violinist Stephane Grappelli. Now, he tours the world's concert halls with his dazzling live performances. Although inspired initially by Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, it was to be piano players, most notably Art Tatum and Bill Evans, who caught his imagination and set him on the path of developing his own individual style of solo playing!
