Baseball player Bernie Williams swings more than a bat! Like the former pro basketball player Wayman Tisdale, Williams is a serious musician--a good acoustic and electric guitarist. Even if the guy is no Pat Metheny, the Puerto Rican-born superstar is classically trained, has a decent tone, and credible technique. Supporting Williams on his debut endeavor is a who's who of contemporary jazz and Latin superstars: from the banjo maestro Bela Fleck and keyboardist David Benoit to the Panamanian salsa singer/songwriter Ruben Blades, and the salsero Gilberto Santa Rosa. Musically, the material includes Latin-tinged, smooth jazz numbers, like the spirited "La Salsa En Mi," the bouncy, "Samba Novo" by the Brazilian guitar king Baden Powell, and reverent readings of Kansas's "Dust in the Wind" and Billy Joel's "And So It Goes." The most heartfelt track on this CD is the wistful "Para Don Berna," an elegy to Williams' late father. Now, we have a good idea of what this outfielder will do when he quits his day job. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
Customer Reviews:
Talented writer AND outstanding jazz guitarist.......2005-07-18
Those whose idea of a guitar virtuoso is Jimi Hendrix probably won't be impressed by this album. Bernie Williams is a REAL guitarist whose years of studying classical guitar are obvious on this album. The music he plays here is technically challenging, and he plays it not only crisply but emotionally. The fact that he also wrote most of it makes it all the more impressive.
The songs are mostly soft latin jazz, a few with vocals (but Bernie doesn't sing), and the last one being a contemporary Christian song with Bernie's kids singing (it's adorable).
As a Red Sox fan, I felt as if I was compromising my principles by buying this album. But as a true music lover, it was a good choice.
Not bad for a ball player.......2005-02-25
I was really surprised when I bought this CD. Some reviewers here are saying the CD sucks, and only NY Yankees fans are giving it great reviews. Also that the songs sound alike and and you can't tell it's Bernie Williams. Give the guy a break !! How many CD's has Boney James cut? Sure you can tell it's Boney, but this is Bernie's first CD. Also, baseball has nothing to do with it. I'm an A's fan and totally disliked Bernie Williams. This CD made me realize that there's more to a person than meets the eye. You can hear his cultural upbringing in his choice of songs and his style of guitar playing. This is a great jazz album to listen to. I really like the David Sancious organ solo. My only problem is where is the follow up album?
The Journey Begins..............2005-02-17
I have owned the CD for over a year and still listen to it frequently. A great debut release. Can't wait for the next one.
Also recommend the DVD.
Bernie is an All-Star as a Jazz Guitarist as well!.......2004-12-15
Just bought "The Journey Within"... excellent album! I've listened to it 3 times today, and I've enjoyed it as much as my Pat Metheny and Armik albums. May I also recommend the music DVD by the same title. Bernie, if you ever read this... you are as graceful, classy and talented with a guitar as you are in Yankee Pinstripes. Your work is a pleasure to listen to, and I look forward to your next release. You will have a long, successful career as a musician after your number is retired by the Yankees.
Okay okay, call him "Santana Lite" if you want..........2004-06-10
The plain fact is that this is a pretty decent recording by a pro athlete. Most of the material here is Williams' own compositions. The leadoff "La Salsa en Mi" is a bouncy, catchy number that most of my friends who are New York Yankee fans were humming to themselves the first few weeks after this album's release, having picked it up from the Yes Network boys running clips from it here and there between innings last season. It's just as infectious as that old Mangione classic "Feels So Good". When Williams does covers like Kansas' "Dust In the Wind" and Billy Joel's "And So It Goes", he prudently keeps the arrangements true to the originals. You may say "so what", but that's practically a law when a rookie plays another dude's tune. And I have to take issue with one observation about the "Williams Kids" track. It consists of two junior chorus level songs sung by Bernie's kids, backed by piano played either by Dad or one of them (who knows?) and their solid glee club harmonies are consistent with children of a musician. And anyway, it says clearly that it's a "bonus track" tacked onto the end. So it hardly detracts from an already good-sized album. Come on already, they also included the shorter single version of "Just Because" here. Ben Sidran once said that jazz is "the American classical music", but let's face it--people who actually feel that way in the full sense of the word verge upon a purism that hampers their capacity to enjoy entertainment. Sidran notwithstanding, jazz is the original rock'n'roll. I won't say this effort is Grammy-bound, but this album is not this man's "day job", you know? Most of this man's fan base is centered in another profession, which leaves him with little to prove before he even plays a note. So we get a sound that's a little Carlos, a little DiMeola and a little Metheny. Maybe a little Gabor Szabo, one of Santana's biggest early influences. So it's bound to be derivative--most of Bernie's "dues" have been paid out in center field at the Stadium with gear by Rawlings and Wilson rather than Gibson and Fender. The upside is that he's free to just have fun here. And anyway, hardly anything I listen to cops any Grammys. Don't get me started on some of the noise that does.

Pianist Bob James and drummer Harvey Mason have gotten their bebop yearnings out of their systems through solo albums, and guitarist Larry Carton took care of his blues craving with an album of his own. Now, they reunite their smooth-jazz supergroup leaving bassist Nathan East with plenty to do. East dominates the first half of this album with vocal work on the first five tracks. While Carlton leads the Sting cover, "Fields of Gold," it is the opening riff, East's vocals on the bridge, and his signature bass runs at the end that make it attractive. East hip-hops the proceedings on his composition "Play Around It" and sings passionately enough on the title track to warrant kudos from his other employer, Eric Clapton. The other half of the record is a more adventurous group effort featuring longer lines and more intense soloing, particularly on James's "Avalabop" and Carlton's "Cool Train." --Mark Ruffin

What the heck???.......2006-12-31
What is Fourplay thinking?? "Instead of doing the things our fans want to hear, let's go off the deep end" Wow! This is the worst Fourplay CD I've heard! Yes, Please and Elixir are the best ones whil;e Heartfelt seemed like they were going in a different direction. Journey proves that! Now that X has come out, it's like they never changed after Yes, Please!...
Do yourself a favor and skip this one...get Yes, Please or Elixir instead!
Definately a Journey Worth Taking!.......2006-04-09
I never heard of Fourplay until I bought the DVD Audio titled FOURPLAY and I was blown away. It was perfect jazz - smooth and mellow without the pop and JOURNEY is the same way. Excellent mix of vocals and instrumentals and I especially like the title track "Journey". I'm going through cancer treatment (again) and for anyone who has been down that road, this song really states it all ... "When I look at the love that surrounds me ... I'm here on this journey, and I don't want to go it alone".
Exhilarating!.......2005-08-16
I'm so glad I didn't read the reviews before I ordered this CD!
This is definitely not elevator music but music for the mature mind! It is super-satisfying and I am actually a new fan.
I bought this CD and it arrived on Saturday and I listened to it all weekend long! I even took Paul Taylor out of its #1 slot in my CD player! Four Play has a style all their own and it is this uniqueness with a taste of old 'skool jazz that's screams originality and Flava! This CD impressed me so much that today I ordered two of their older CD's. I also decided to purchase another copy of this CD for a couple I know that loves jazz. NO HOME SHOULD BE WITHOUT THIS ONE!
Music for mature adults,audiophile masterpiece.......2005-06-15
This cd is one of the best Fourplay cd ever made and its an audiophile dream come true. Now, for those so call fans that are still wearing pampers, please grow up get rid of your discman and stop crying.Fourplay has grown up and is now making music for the mature fans with audiophile taste...highly recommended.
Nice To Have Ya Back!.......2005-05-03
The best Fourplay album in years. Eventhough, I've bought every album, the past three albums just didn't move me as much. However, this album is the Fourplay I grew up on. All the tracks are soothing and typical of the Fourplay sound that's good for any occassion. My favorites are definitely Cool Train, Avalabop, and Firehouse Chill. Those are the three I play the CD cover off when in the ride. I didn't know until last week this album had even been released. Well, it was definitely worth the wait cuz the Jazz that's being released right now is definitely oversaturated Pop Jazz, and I'm glad Fourplay took it back to the way it's supposed to be done.

One of the best.......1999-04-04
This is one of the best CD's in my collection of almost 500 jazz albums. I will probably wear it out
Jazz fusion that you can listen or dance too........1998-11-22
This is one of those undiscovered gems that you come across once in a while that easily falls into your most played category. This is jazz fusion that is eminently danceable ( take the opening track "free fall" forinstance); but has many other elements like the soothing, sensuous vocals of Judy LaRose on tracks like "heaven in your eyes". The album is good mix of foot tapping up tempo grooves offset by beautiful midtempo melodies. My one rejoinder to the producers of this album(CD) is that I am getting really upset at the lack of any notes with CD,s. Who infact plays that kicking sax on most of the tracks?????

TONIC hit the Windy City jazz scene in 2003 with a myopic goal to carve out a niche in the future of the Great American Songbook. Two years later theyre delivering slick vocals that put a refreshing spin on popular Songbook classics and sharp neo-pop originals, all backed by a mix of the best musicians on the Third Coast. Hailed by critics and industry greats (Cy Coleman, Alan & Marilyn Bergman, Larry Gelbart, etc.) their entre to the vocal jazz world is a mix of hot harmonies and sweet that grooves from Lounge to Latin and kicking to cool. 13 cuts of solid swank with sweet harmonies and smooth solos that blend into a modern journey back to pure Vintage style.

Extremely wonderful CD, Earl, Very Very Pleasant!.......2004-06-18
The greatest acoustic guitarist in the world is Earl Klugh. A very talented guitarist. Whenever i listen to his music, i feel at home. The tunes in this CD are second to non, just like his other CD'S. The master-fully rendered acoustic tunes from Earl kligh makes me feel like i'm in Heaven.I love all his tracks. Not withstanding, just check-out such tunes like,Autumn song, Good as it gets, The journey, Last song, Walk in the sun and others, you'll love them every time it's played.Earl is my main-man any time any day. I recommend all his CD'S to all jazz lovers, because all his tracks are extremely very good. If you like acoustic guitar tunes then listen to Earl Klughs' CD'S. Earl, you're the Best Acoustic Guitarist in the whole wide world.
Extremely Good CD!!!.......2003-11-24
I like listening to my dad's old smooth jazz, but I can never remember the names to any songs(but I do know them by heart kinda). Anyways, I picked up this CD and was so happy. The songs on here are great.
The Journey is a song itself and is pretty good. Fingerdance is also pretty good as a more rhythmed song. The whole cd is pretty good. Last Song is my favorite, but the journey song is good too.
Buy the CD! Today, now! Go buy the CD sometime because Earl Klugh is pretty dang good at this stuff...
Like an evening in front of the fireplace!.......2001-06-25
There's no secret that I'm an Earl Klugh fan! Have been for more than 15 years and will continue to be one until my hearing goes as an old man! This CD fits in perfectly with MY version of the BEST OF CD's that I make at home. Earl does some nice chopping away at the smooth-jazz genre with his jazzy ax in this one. My favs have to be, "Last Song" for it's flowing melody and the forceful, yet restrained groove of "Evil Eye". For this CD to be only 10 songs, I was a bit dispppointed, but he left me wanting more.....like a true artist should! Even though it's 2001 now, I still listen to this 1997 offering at LEAST once a month! It reminds me on being inside on a cold, snowy night! Just enjoying this warm embrace of a jazzy musical offering!
A Guitar Jazz Recommendation.......1999-07-14
Any body who like guitar jazz should listen to Earl Klugh's "The Journey." Like something slow and mello, listen to the title track; like something smooth but not fast or slow, play "Last Song"; or like something sweet and fast, listen to "Fingerdance." This is my recommendation that I don't want anybody to miss out on.
Earl Klugh's BIG BANG.......1999-06-24
Thanks Earl. Eric-Christian MOTA

fusion fire.......2002-10-03
after norman connors hit big with "starship", he followed up with this lp. while not as massive as its predecessor, it did have its pleasures. prince philip mitchell's "once i've been there" and "destination moon" were fm staples. the title cut and "thembi" were also highlights. but the "must hear" was "for you everything" the duet with mitchell and eleanor mills, who reportedly was stephanie's sister in law at the time. that cut had some serious "marvin and tammi" chemistry hapn'n. you can practically feel the heat between these two before it's all over.
mills also shines on the stylistics' remake of "you are everything". as far as i know she didn't do anything else after this project, but check it out if you like old school rnb.
