Fresh off his Broadway stint in The Pajama Game, Harry Connick went back to his New Orleans roots and recorded a pair of albums in tribute to his hometown. Released the same day as the similarly themed but mostly instrumental Chanson du Vieux Carré, Oh, My Nola is a loose, effortlessly swinging album that ranks among Connick's best. He traces New Orleans' prodigious musical legacy with well-chosen covers peppered with some originals. Though he wrote only four tracks, at least one of them, "All These People," is a stand-out--a mid-tempo elegy about the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, with a strong contribution from gospel great Kim Burrell. When it comes to the covers, Connick chose tracks that either originated in New Orleans or found particular resonance there. The funky, exuberant take on Allen Toussaint's classic "Working in a Coal Mine" that opens the CD reflects the flavor of things to come, but even more fun are the seemingly left-field picks--you'll never think of "Hello Dolly" the same way after listening to the version found here. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I haven't bought a new Harry Connick Jr. cd in a while. I saw this one looking up at me in a store and I just had to have it. I popped it in to play as soon as I reached the car. I was blown away by this cd. The rhythm and soulful singing really spoke to me. Absolutely wonderful music!

I am great big HCJ fan, have been since "We Are In Love". But this is by far my favourite. I hope they come for a tour in Malaysia again, saw them in 2005, it was a wonderful experience.

I have always been fascinated with the rich musical history of New Orleans. Native son, Harry Connick Jr. pays tribute to this rich musical legacy with this outstanding representation of the city's heritage. He features old classics like "Bill Bailey" (done in a classy style that reminds me of Count Basie's big band sound), the Lee Dorsey classic "Workin In a coal mine" really kicks butt, "Yes we can can"...
makes me want to join the Mardi Gras parade, the bluesy "Someday" is fascinating etc. etc. There really isn't a bad cut on this album. Mr. Connick is a master musician/arranger and singer and he's made himself a classic album. Buy it and you won't regret it.

I like it very much. I bought it for the song, "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans". I miss New Orleans because of good memories of being there and I very much enjoy his rendition of it and other songs he does on the cd. It's definitely an "easy listening" cd and that's good for me. I think it's great and recommend it.

The songs on LOUIS ARMSTRONG * THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION generally follow a regression from 1968 to 1938. The album's liner notes conversely provide details of Armstrong's most influential years: the mid-Twenties until his lip broke, in 1933. The writer glows about Satchmo's influence on ALL subsequent musicians and vocalists, from Benny Goodman to the Rolling Stones! Truly a hyperbolic overview.

But the music is what matters most. Armstrong adapted to the realities of losing his superhuman playing abilities by developing a more expressive style, and by concentrating on vocalization. This album documents well that second phase of his performing career. Source material is drawn from all major labels: DECCA, COLUMBIA, VICTOR, ABC-PARAMOUNT, KAPP and VERVE. Transfer quality is excellent. This collection is particularly recommended for newcomers to the music of Louis Armstrong.

I am definitely a hard core rock 'n roll girl, and this is the first jazz album I have ever purchased...and it blew my socks off! How can you not love Louis Armstrong?!! That gravelly voice, the depth of emotion when he sings...

His music is timeless and I don't think it matters what genre of music you love, you can't go wrong adding this to your collection. After listening to this cd, I am definitely going to look at purchasing the album Best of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Their duet on this cd "Our Love Is Here To Stay" floored me. Her silken voice and his gravelly one are an amazing combination.

I highly recommend this album as a good introduction to anyone who wants to get to know Louis Armstrong. I'm sure you'll be left wanting more, like me.

This five-CD box set soundtrack to filmmaker Ken Burns's 10-part, 19-hour documentary Jazz spans nearly a century of jazz styles, from the martial rhythms of James Reese Europe to the soul-jazz of Grover Washington Jr. It includes time-tested classics like Benny Goodman's 1938 classic, "Sing, Sing, Sing"; John Coltrane's chanting 1965 immortal track, "A Love Supreme"; Billie Holiday's blue-ember ballad, "God Bless the Child"; and Ella Fitzgerald peeling off "A-Tisket A-Tasket." Bebop is represented by Charlie Parker's orchestral bop version of "Just Friends"; Thelonious Monk's nocturnal calling card, "'Round Midnight"; and Dizzy Gillespie's "Salt Peanuts" and "Groovin' High."

The jazz-instrumentalist-as-singer comes to life on Coleman Hawkins's "Body and Soul" and Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers' "Doodlin'." Clifford Brown and Max Roach's "I Get a Kick out of You" epitomizes the hard-bop era, while Miles Davis's "So What" stands as the modal masterpiece. The cool school is in session with Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan dishing out "Walkin' Shoes," and the Modern Jazz Quartet's soulful elegy "Django" straddles all the above musical orbits. As for Django Reinhardt, he's featured on "Shine" with the justly famed Le Quartet du Hot Club de France.

Louis Armstrong's "West End Blues" and "Potato Head Blues" and Duke Ellington's rousing rendition of Billy Strayhorn's anthem, "Take the A Train," and his moody "Solitude" show why they are the Olympian masters of this art form--and the most frequently featured artists in the series. Although Ken Burns tries bringing the music up-to-date with Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, and two jazz-hip-hop-influenced tracks--Herbie Hancock's robotic "Rockit" and the French-language "Un Aige en Danger" by MC Solaar and bass legend Ron Carter--there are significant holes here. After Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman, the avant-garde period from the late 1960s to the 1980s is lacking. And aside from the bossa nova hit "Desafinado," Latin jazz is also missing. This is a beautifully packaged 5 disc set highlighting some of the greatest jazz artists of all time. If you buy this set and are really excited about the sound and the masterful artists presented then, I highly recommend collecting the 22 discs of individual artists by Burns which showcase the popular and influential music of those artists. Having all of the Ken Burns Jazz editions is of course just a start but a good start into the world of jazz it will be.

As a Sinatra-molded swinger, Harry Connick, Jr. may have had some of his thunder stolen by young star Michael Buble. But with his raved-about performance on Broadway in Pajama Game and his continuing development as a jazz pianist, he's doing quite nicely, thank you. Chanson du Vieux Carre is one of two new simultaneously released big band tributes to his hometown of New Orleans by him. Released on Marsalis Music, it is a largely instrumental big band session divided between originals and classics that shows off his writing and arranging skills while featuring his longtime trumpeter Leroy Jones and trombonist Lucien Barbarin on incidental vocals. (Connick is in full vocal mode on Oh, My Nola, released by his longtime "A" label, Columbia.) Though his surprisingly few turns at the piano are mostly Basie-like in their edgy economy, his coloristic, sectional approach on tunes such as his own "Luscious" and Hoagy Carmichael's "New Orleans" evokes Duke Ellington. Named for the storied old section of the French Quarter, the album takes a few songs to get going, but once it does, it has plenty of spark and swagger--and heart. The ghostlike background voicings on Sidney Bechet's "Petite Fleur" seem to embody spirits of New Orleans past while it's always great to hear Connick honor his onetime mentor, Professor Longhair, on Longhair's bumptious "Mardis Gras in New Orleans." --Lloyd Sachs

For Harry Connick, Jr. and the members of his big band, New Orleans has always been a constant state of mind. Connick's hometown, the birthplace of so much of America's musical culture, defines all of his performances, but never more so than on Chanson du Vieux CarrÃƒÂ©, the third disc in the Marsalis Music label's Connick on Piano series. The album was conceived and executed in May 2003, well before Hurricane Katrina, and showcases Connick's talents as a pianist, arranger of favorite New Orleans classics, and composer of three titles in debut performances. While Connick does not sing on the recording, key band members Lucien Barbarin (trombone) and Leroy Jones (trumpet) do. Chanson du Vieux CarrÃƒÂ© is a Crescent City love letter, composed two years before the deluge yet never timelier. The album will be released on January 30, 2007, the same day Columbia Records issues Connick's vocal tribute Oh, My NOLA. A portion of Connick's royalties from both discs will benefit New Orleans Habitat Musicians' Village.

I have mixed feelings about Harry Connick, Jr. The jazz lover in me often pleads with other aficionado's to not shoot the innovative piano player, but please off the reckless crooner Connick can be.

Fortunately, Connick sticks to the ivories in his more lucid moments and on his latest effort, Chanson du Vieux Carre', he makes his grand piano perform wondrous magic along with his sensational big band.

Chanson du Vieux Carre' is a tribute to New Orleans and the cross cultural hybrid of blues, old time spirituals, and honky-tonk that earned the moniker of New Orleans jazz. Connick and his band rip several pages from past giants such as Louis Armstrong and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to make Chanson, however, this doesn't diminish the amazing power and overflowing spirit that lifts Chanson du Vieux Carre' to masterpiece status.

Like many of Connick's past big band efforts, he is nearly imperceptible, working as a small piece of an ensemble musical landscape. The band features some incredible players, including regular Arthur Latin on drums, Dave Schumacher on baritone saxophone, Mark Mullins, Craig Klein, John Allred, and the incomparable Lucien Barbarin on trombones, Jerry Weldon and Mike Karn on tenor sax, and the steady backbeat of Neil Caine's standup bass. Together, they navigate the salty waters of standards like Armstrong's "Someday You'll Be Sorry", Sidney Bechet's "Petite Fleur", Hoagy Carmichael's "New Orleans", and Sammy Cahn's "I Still Get Jealous"; plus about half dozen of Connick's original compositions. Each song is arranged brilliantly, making the most of the steamy sensuality of Crescent City jazz.

It's hard to know where not to recommend this album, but standout performances include Barbarin's vocal and solo trombone tracks on Connick original "Luscious", the unexpected horn blasts on "Someday You'll be Sorry", and the jump up and shout enthusiasm of the final track "Mardi Gras in New Orleans". The entire album succeeds in weaving a voodoo spell that will have jazz fans grooving zombie-like under its myriad charms.

Connick himself finds a groove too, and is smart not to hog the show with his solo work. When he does solo, it's simple and non-obtrusive, showing a great loyalty to the sound that has captivated him since childhood.

If all of that's not enough to convince you to buy this album, then you should also know that the profit from this album will go to building an old musicians home in the lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, and to help with the reconstruction of the area in general.

So as much as I'd like to see Harry Connick the singer laid to rest, the pianist has made a huge contribution to jazz preservation with Chanson du Vieux Carre'. In so doing, he has earned his place among the legends of the musical form, and for the heart that has driven him to make this album.

See What Happens.......2007-04-19

It's been rumored that reviewers in these parts can get away with making passing references to *other* titles that cross their minds while enjoying the release at hand. Proof of that can be seen elsewhere on this very page, and it's a great thing. Here's the kicker - go so far as to actually "insert a product link" and your review will be deemed subversive, doomed to censorship at best, and probably completely annihilated by the time you come around to looking at it again. So here goes nothing...

"Chanson du Vieux Carré" is a wonderful collection of Crescent City big-band charts by Mr. Connick, Jr. and company. Having nothing to do with Katrina as the sessions themselves date back to 2003, you can nevertheless feel the teamwork and dedication put forth by players who respect each other and love the music they are making. Turns out that having this disc handy provides one with the perfect tonic for a fine gin like Tom Sancton's 2006 account "Song For My Father: A New Orleans Story in Black and White" (Other Press). Later we'll add a product link here and see if the whole review dies.

How about one more? Fans of Harry Connick, Jr. the pianist and composer can also be abundantly rewarded for their time and effort by another of his instrumental albums from yesteryear, "Lofty's Roach Soufflé", a trio outing on Columbia made in 1990 that reveals the not-so-subtle impact of Thelonious Monk on Connick's music-making. It's lots of fun, as is "Chanson". Both come highly recommended. Now watch - soon as we add a link for LRS this thing is DOA.

Sweet New Orleans jazz.......2007-04-18

"Chanson Du Vieux Carre" is wonderful, traditional New Orleans jazz. Classic pieces written by jazz greats like Louis Armstrong and Hoagy Carmichael are inter-mingled with Connick compositions that not only pay homage but sound right at home next to the old favorites. This was recorded in 2003, according to Connick's liner notes, during the same studio sessions in which he and his band recorded "Harry for the Holidays," and "Only You." For the most part, this album is without vocals, with notable exceptions on "Someday You'll Be Sorry," "Luscious" (sung by trombone-player extraordinaire Lucien Barbarin), and "Bourbon Street Parade," which showcases trumpet-player Leroy Jones. The haunting Connick title composition was previously released on the album "Occasion," a piano/saxophone pairing with Branford Marsalis. If you're looking for songs you can sing along with, don't miss "Oh My Nola," the Connick album released on the same day as this one.

Great collection.......2007-07-08

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band's 1997 release "Marching Down Bourbon Street" is actually a compilation of tracks from their "New Orleans, Volume..." albums released between the 1970s and 1990s. As most of those albums are now out of print, this is a great buy, especially at such a good price. Anyone who's ever been to Preservation Hall knows what a great show they put on, and they sound just as tight on record. The compilation includes their best known standards like "St. James Infirmary" and "The Bucket's Got a Hole in It," and of course "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Amen," as well as technical masterpieces like "Hindustan" and "St. Louis Blues." A great purchase, highly recommended, this is fine New Orleans jazz!

Classic New Orleans.......2001-06-25

Anyone who has visited Preservation Hall in New Orleans will truly appreciate this CD as it captures the feeling of that great joyful and music-filled room. To those who have not been blessed with that experience, this CD will certainly whet your appetite for Dixieland. I have been a fan of New Orleans Jazz for over 50 years and never tire of listening to the old standards featured here. St. James Infirmary is one of my all-time favorites and is particulary good here. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is one of the most important groups preserving and promoting this kind of music. This is also a super value and offers a good way to sample this music.

THE ESSENTIAL LOUIS ARMSTRONG is a sweeping overview of THE most influential jazz musician of the 20th Century. Disc one contains Armstrong's New Orleans-styled electrical recordings of the late '20's (note that he had made some acoustic horn stuff prior), while the second CD continues the early sides until midway through, and then offers brief glimpses of Satchmo's career from 1938 to '67.

To mention a single outstanding example, Armstrong's early beautiful tone is clearly evident on his trumpet intro to 1928's "West End Blues," as is his fine scat voice. Beyond that track, all of disc one is certain to be a revelation to those only familiar with Louis' "Hello Dolly" pop-type tunes.

Mastering of the antique 78s in particular is remarkable-- they all sound great! THE ESSENTIAL LOUIS ARMSTRONG is a set that belongs in everyone's collection, not just jazz afficionados. Buy with confidence!

I am not an expert on any kind of music, but like so many others I have long loved the sound of Satchmo. The purity of the horn , the raspy catchy voice, the soul. Satchmo is himself bound up with the Birth of the Blues but one of the things that most gets me is the optimism, and love of life in his music. When he plays and sings 'What a wonderful world' you believe it.

...of what constitutes Louis' career, so it's hard for it to earn its "Essential" appellation, but still, it's hard to go wrong with this -while you're listening to it, every cut sure seems essential. Some listeners, used to recordings of more recent vintage may be shocked at how lo fi some of this is, but still, I think they'll be able to get past that...Wonderful and beautiful stuff from one of the alltime if not THE alltime, American immortals...

ps - Be sure and pick up LA's collaborations with Ella Fitzgerald: "Ella and Louis" and "Ella and Louis Again" - they are sublime and transcendant.

The Complete Piano Music of Scott Joplin.......2007-06-08

John Arpin does a great job with these pieces. The songs carry a consistent sound and are played very close to as-written, which comes and goes with old ragtime pieces. The stamping on Stop-Time Rag doesn't have a consistent sound to it, can be a little distracting. Everything else is great, overall I think that it's a great buy, I'm very happy with it.

Another Performer Rewrites Joplin's Masterpieces.......2007-05-31

Once again, another performer feels the need to rewrite the music of the King of Ragtime. Scott Joplin spins in his grave each and every time this recording is played.

Again, to those who believe that concert music is meant to be rewritten by each and every performer I ask, is the same treatment also acceptable for Chopin's and Rachmaninoff's music? Would "Moonlight Sonata" sound better if played at twice the tempo and with a reprise of the first Adagio movement thrown in at the end? Obviously, the answer to these questions is a resounding NO!, so why does one of America's greatest composers get such disrespect?

Interpretation is an integral part of every performance. Adding one's own notes, phrases and chords where none should be is not. Randomly changing the structure of the piece is not. Playing a piece at twice the indicated tempo is not.

One the plus side, the depth of this collection is outstanding. Joplin's lesser known pieces like "Harmony Club Waltz" really shine. The recording is decent in quality, although a bit bassy in places.

While its been stated before, I feel its worth repeating: Buy Joshua Rifkin's performances of Joplin in order to hear how the Master intended his pieces to sound.

Although all of the music is terrific it is rather a lot of a similar sound. I think I would have preferred 2 CD's of selected piano works of Scott Joplin. But I did get the music at a good price.

Ragtime Marvel.......2005-10-09

This collection of Scott Joplin's piano music is outstanding. As a lover of ragtime which was a prelude to jazz, I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. If you are not a lover of jazz, you may be a lover of ragtime. Jazz can sometimes be grating on the nerves, whereas ragtime lifts the spirit.

Complete, but poor quality.......2005-09-25

I have been learning some ragtime and wanted to hear more to find other selections to learn. Listened to Maple Leaf Rag, my favorite, first and was disappointed. Listened to others and was more disappointed. Maple flies - much faster than anyone would play it, you can't make out some of the phrases. And talk about ad libs - Tempo, dynamics, embelishments, nuances - I really think he plays some wrong notes too because he's going so fast. It's really a poor recording - and that's just on Maple Leaf. Others with "intros" start quick and then there's a grand pause, not a rest, but nearly a five second break. It's hard to argue how Joplin would have played it, but this is hardly anything I want to try to imitate. The only qualitating factor is the number of songs for the price. A lot of variety of a poor interpretation is only worth 3 stars. if that. Look for Rifkin or a copy that is as written to listen to first, then go for the ad libs and "artistic interpretations"

Hurricane Katrina may have devastated New Orleans and surrounding Gulf communities in 2005, but it was also a forceful reminder of the Crescent City's world renowned status as the epicenter of much American musical heritage. This benefit album (all net proceeds will be donated to the local relief efforts of Habitat for Humanity, with a portion specifically set aside to provide housing for local musicians left homeless by the disaster) picks up that latter thread, a sometimes bittersweet reminder of how deepy ingrained, yet all-too-fragile, that cultural legacy really is. Allen Toussaint's succulent reworking of his "Yes We Can Can" sets a rhythmic, optimistic tone that parallels his city's own historical resilience, while Dr. John turns in a bluesy, laid-back "World I Never Made" that's a sharp contrast to the flashes of anger he showed on Tab Benoit's earlier benefit collection, Voice of the Wetlands. Irma Thomas gives a swampy, timely edge to Bessie Smith's "Back Water Blues" while others pay tribute to the region's history of gospel (Davell Crawford, Eddie Bo), indigenous cajun folk (Buckwheat Zydeco, Beausolei, Carol Fran) and legacy as the Birthplace of Jazz (vibrantly disparate contributions from Dr. Michael White, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the venerable Preservation Hall Jazz Band). The Wild Magnolias' medley "Brother John Is Gone/Herc-Jolly-John" is a joyous, African-rooted gumbo of musical possibilities, while Donald Harrison's sax work with The Wardell Querzergue's Orchestra's on "What a Wonderful World" is a fine preamble for Toussaint's elegiac solo piano rendition of "Tipitina and Me." Randy Newman's closer, a melancholic new version of Good Old Boys' "Louisiana 1927," is a tribute to his own N.O. roots whose refrain--"Louisiana, they're trying to wash us away"--is also a forceful, tragic reminder that history does indeed repeat. --Jerry McCulley

Nonesuch Records is releasing a benefit album of newly recorded songs featuring artists from the New Orleans music community - across a wide variety of styles - to document the depth, richness and profound musicality of that unique city. Funds from the sale of the record, titled Our New Orleans, will be donated to Habitat For Humanity to aid those affected by the recent Hurricane Katrina disaster. A number of New Orleans' best known musicians have been asked to record songs that are integral to their lives and that express their feelings about the city and the recent events there. Sessions began in New York on September 20, with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Wild Magnolias recording at Clinton Studios. Later the same day and on September 21, Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band recorded at New York's Avatar Studios. Further sessions in October included Dr. John, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Randy Newman, among others. Nonesuch's parent company - Warner Bros. Records - is donating all of the production costs for this record, as part of the Warner Music Group's larger efforts on behalf of the hurricane victims. Many others involved in the project are also generously donating their time and services.

One of, if not THE best, of the Katrina benefit disks. The music is first class, the recordings are pristine, and the money goes to a good cause.

This disk has already earned over one MILLION dollars for the Habitat for Humanity Musicians Village and other causes. If you buy a copy of this disk for everyone on your Xmas list, you won't go wrong.

Good old Louisiana music.......2007-03-08

Bring out the red beans and rice and jambalaya because New Orleans is going to rise again. Great renditions by many great Louisiana and a few non-Louisiana artists make this CD a must have. You will not be disappointed from Allen to Randy.

After spending a month in New Orleans, I got a "taste" of the music as well as the wonderful food. I find that this album is a great representation of the many faces of New Orleans. Some blues, some jazz, and all heart-felt.

The more I listen to this CD the better I like it - it grows on me a bit more with each playing. I love the variety of styles of music represented here and each style has its own New Orleans flavor - Dixieland Jazz, Jazz, Zydeco, blues, rock, et. al. It is amazing to me that this group of extremely talented musical artists put this CD together so soon after the tragedy of the levies breaking in the wake of Hurricane Katrina - this, too, speaks to their incredible talent and hearts. It is a "SOUL HEALER" for anyone in any circumstance.

the City that Care Forgot is sweetly remembered.......2006-09-15

True New Orleans-area music is captured here on this benefit disc. If you've ever experienced this gem of the world, the CD puts you right back there. It doesn't stop throughout: you are cermoniously dropped right into the flavor and feel of New Orleans at the first note of Allen Toussaint's Mardi Gras-flavored version of "Yes We Can Can" and you stay there until Randy Newman and the accompanying orchestras hit the last note in "Louisiana 1927".

Do you feel any melancholy? Yeah, you right! Do you wish you could do more for those who have suffered? Yeah, baby.

This is a wonderful compilation of artists from the area, and even more than a year after Katrina - it's worth buying and supporting the Habitat and musicias who lost their homes.

I DO know what it means to miss New Orleans...

The popular tracks.......2006-09-29

Many greatest hits compilations by current bands are worthwhile because they owed their success to radio and their best work was released to radio. "Greatest hits" does not always equate with "best of" and this compilation is an excellent example of that. Many of these songs I truly enjoy. Do many songs better than "What A Wonderful World" exist? The man owns "Hello Dolly" and "Mack the Knife," and "La Vie en Rose" is a timeless, beautiful song. However, it is difficult to fathom songs such as "Skokiaan," "The Dummy Song" and "Chloe" were ever hits. They aren't especially good songs and I assume MCA included them because they lacked rights to better material. I agree with the reviewers, who have directed readers to other Satchmo releases. In addition to those recommendations, the one I would suggest is the "Jazz `Round Midnight" series release, simply titled "Louis Armstrong." "All-Time Greatest Hits" isn't a terrible CD, though it does not give a non-fan an idea of just how great some of Mr. Armstrong's music is.

There's no need to talk about his-- I was about to say "mastery of the music," but it's more about soul than mastery. The music was just there. My comments have to do with the music selection. These cuts are his greatest hits all right, they're pleasant and enjoyable etc. They are AM Radio Hits on a Disc! If you love Louis' music, I encourage you to call up "Ambassador Satch" and listen to a few of those cuts, too. That music or his "W.C. Handy" disc and some others tell the tale of his music better than Mack the Knife, much as I--and you, no doubt--enjoy it. Give them a spin and enjoy the real roots of Louis. Even the re-mastered "Original Hot Five" and "Hot Seven" discs--cut in the 20s--are great. You might like these "not for everybody" less commercial discs even better!

There's no one like him but this is just a small slice of the man. Next time I'll be looking for a larger perspective. It's ok, the sound is no great shakes but no music collection is complete without an Satch cd.

Louis Armstrong is one of the greats. He practically invented New Orleans jazz (and now with Katrina, we think about how special this music is). This album has all the best tunes. "What a Wonderful World"- his classic. I like his "Blueberry Hill" even better than Fats Domino's (Or Richie Cunningham's)
This is just great music, especially if you are entertaining a special lady and want to show your sophistication and your tender side.

A compilation of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band's Columbia recordings from 1976 to 1988, this 76-minute CD is an excellent introduction to the work of these senior New Orleans musicians. It also testifies to the band's durability as well as that of the music, with only a single change in personnel over the period covered. The disc concentrates on the most familiar repertoire, whether rags, blues, hymns, or popular songs, including "Tiger Rag," "St. Louis Blues," "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," and "When the Saints Go Marching In." There are also beautiful renderings of Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo," taking the tune back to its roots in a New Orleans blues song, and Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia on My Mind." --Stuart Broomer

I purchased this set because I love New Orleans jazz and I had been to the Preservation Hall several times over the years. I already have several of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band's LPs. Because of Hurricane Katrina, I didn't know if the Band would be producing any more music. So I bought "The Best of Preservation Hall Jazz Band" CDs. I wasn't disappointed, and I'm very happy to see that the French Quarter was spared major damage. It is the birth place of a truly American art form: Dixieland Jazz.

Preversation Hall Jazz Band is what the name implies, preserving the way Jazz was played and passing it on in that form. This isn't popular with some Jazz people but their is something to say for classic playing. For me this is an aspect of Jazz that I like played "this way" and they do a great job of it.

This CD gives you an excellent selection of songs at a very good price. Each number is very well done and easy on the ears and great fun. Sit back, relax and enjoy the Preservation Hall Jazz Band at the top of their form. The classic "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" is worth the price of the CD as a stand alone. Add in "When The Saints Go Marching In", "Tiger Rag" and a couple of others for an outstanding value.

Amazing Music From True Masters.......2004-12-24

Other places may try to claim jazz as their own, but no one can hold a candle to the jazz from New Orleans. The Big Easy is where it was invented and it doesn't sound any better than when it's played by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

This disc is a collection of their best songs spanning the time from 1976 to 1988. Everything is here. From the LSU(and my high school) favorite, "Tiger Rag," to the easily recognized "When The Saints Go Marching In," you'll find it on this disc. I love the band's take on "Georgia On My Mind" and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee." They are both proof that everything sounds a little better with jazz.

Folks will also recognize "Joe Avery." They may not know that "Joe Avery" is the title, but when they here the trumpet, they'll recognize this one as a huge Mardi Gras favorite.

Every single song on this album is well worth the price. Buy this disc if you want to know what the real deal sounds like.

I saw the band perform several times in the 1980's. Truly a wonderfull experience. The review of the person complaining the singing wasn't that good is completely off the mark: what did he expect, the plastic voice of someone who had a full sound stage to hide the fact he couldn't sing at all?

The Epicenter of Jazz.......2002-10-26

Preservation Hall is the epicenter of Jazz on this planet and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band represents in fine fashion. Having each band member featured on a particular song adds to the uniqueness of this CD and is a great asset, not something that "almost eliminates" the excellence of the compositions.

I'm a native New Orleanian who's been to Preservation Hall many times and I own this CD. The shallow review of one reviewer should in no way dissuade you from buying this CD as a central part of any Jazz collection. This tracks chosen for this recording are a fantastic cross-section of Jazz and of the band itself and is well worth the investment.
