Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Good for Collectors.......2002-12-11
I give this three stars, taking away two for the bad sound quality. It sounds like music on a cheap AM radio in the next room.
Don't get me wrong. The performances are great, and every Ra album is important.
I especially like the rare vocal version of "China Gate," hitherto available on the studio "Futuristic Sounds" album issued a year later, in 1961. "China Gate" is a kind of Vaughn Monroe thing, but Ra was into exotic foreign settings at that time, like some of Les Baxter's records. It's historically interesting in retrospect because Ra was so avant garde elsewhere.
If you are not a collector, you are better off buying any of the 15 or so excellent CDs issued by Evidence Records and available from Amazon.
Oh, if only it sounded a little cleaner..........2002-12-10
While the recording quality of these shows leave a lot to be desired, the music is inspired nonetheless. A great window into the variety and energy that made up Sun Ra shows (as I understand them, being far too young to have actually seen one).
More Unheard Music.......2002-11-14
Atavistic, those sly folks from Chicago, are at it again with their unheard music series. This time they have unearthed two live sessions from Sun Ra's Chicago version of the Arkestra. The first session comes from Ra's legendary stint at the Wonder Inn on Chicago's South Side. This tape has been rumored to exist for years but this is it's first appearance to the general public. It is a fascinating document of a formative period in the Arkestra's history. The band is small but many Arkestra stalwarts are here including John Gilmore, Marshall Allen and the marvelous Ronnie Boykins on bass. They play a mix of Ra originals and standards. Included are a stunning version of Angels and Demons at Play, better known in it's Saturn records "studio" version. Allen is featured on the atmospheric Sponteneous Simplicity along with another unnamed flautist. John Gilmore shows his bop chops on Space Aura, though you can here him drifting toward the rougher style he would use in later years. The standards are also fascinating. The version of Ain't Necessarily So is classic hard bop, but with it's own weird quirks including some Ra breaks on electric piano.
The Majestic Hall sessions are even more obscure than the Wonder Inn sessions. They have not even been rumored to exist. The band is an octet as opposed to the Wonder Inn's sextet. The material is dominated Ra originals, along with some standard ballads, mixing beautiful, almost cocktail style piano from Ra, romantic playing from Bari saxist Ronald Wilson, exotica like Ankhnaton which recall the Arkestra's origins as a stripper show band, modal vamp numbers like Majestic 2, hard bop, tense and dissonant music like Majestic 4 which feature a stunning bari sax solo, and "afro-chants" like A Call for All Demons. The material is fascinating.
Words to the wise however...the sound on these recordings is primitive, to say the least. Most of them were probably recorded using primitive homemade equipment. Much of Ra's piano is nearly inaudible when the rest of the band is playing. The horns, particularly Gilmore, don't suffer quite so much, but Ronnie Boykins bass is all but obliterated. And often the audience is louder than the entire band put together. This is particularly distracting in the first two numbers, as they are rather quiet and we get to hear details of the dinner plans of several customers. (Actually, it's kind of refreshing to hear the enthusiasm and spontaneity of the crowd later in the gig.) The Majestic sessions are a little better and the band has more presence. But neither session sounds as good as the first Saturn records and that's faint praise indeed.
So this album is really for the specialist...jazz composers, Ra enthusiasts, fans of the wonderful John Gilmore, and anyone interested in a slice of Chicago jazz in the 50s and 60s should definately get this disc. I'm certainly glad I have it. But I'm only giving it three stars, because the sound is so bad and therefore this should not be the CD that a novice to Sun Ra should get. If you are beginning your journey to Saturn with Ra, choose one of the Studio sessions from the 50's...Fate in a Pleasant Mood, Interstellar Low-ways, A Call for All Demons, Jazz in Sillouette. Any of these would be better introductions to the wild, weird world of Ra.

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20
this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.
Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.
Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.
Good Collection.......2005-02-24
Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.
Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10
I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28
Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.
Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08
This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.

Customer Reviews:
First-rate introduction to Brazil's myriad of musical offerings.......2005-07-20
What a shocker - no one has reviewed this CD! I don't even know Portuguese and this is one of my favorite world music albums. A Brit whose name I can't recall followed up his Nu Brazil compilation with this sequel. I can say with complete sincerity that this album has spawned a huge interest in Brazilian music for me, largely because it doesn't limit itself to just one style but tries to show listeners the incredible range and quality of music that the country's artists produce. If you don't like a certain track, skip it: the next one is almost guaranteed to please. My favorites are track 3 on disc 1, track 9 on disc 1, 6, 8, and 9 on disc 2, and the fantastic closer by Tuze de Abreu, a haunting tune that recalls Portuguese fado at its best. A must buy. I usually don't go in for compilations, but this is a notable exception - all in all, a fantastic album.
