    Come on! A chance to hear Bertolt Brecht sing his own Mack the Knife before Bobby Darrin messed it up! How many CDs are going to have that?!

    Kurt Weill and Broadway fans will probably feel an intense need to have this album, and I'm not sure I'd be able to dissuade them. There's some good stuff on this recording, to be sure, but a great deal of it is in German, and much of it might not interest even someone with just a casual interest in the material chronicled. While there's a strong representation of The Threepenny Opera (all in German), the selections from Lady in the Dark featuring Gertrude Lawrence and Danny Kaye are vital, as are the tracks of Mary Martin and Kenny Baker performing selected numbers from One Touch of Venus. (You can also hear Walter Huston performing a song from Knickerbocker Holiday, though it is, for some strange reason, "The Scars." It's an interesting historical record, but not a great song.) Lotte Lenya also sings some as well, which is a treat, but overall, this is a highly variable recording. Make sure you know exactly what you're getting beforehand, or you may be likely to find yourself--as I do--listening to only half the album.

    What an incredible recording! What energy, what a fantastic voice! The songs, many of which are rarely recorded, are presented in a wonderful upbeat and stylish mood. It's almost impossible not to love this CD. Her tributes to the greats of the silver screen are very witty and yet not overly campy. Judy manages to almost one up Carmen Miranda, with her Carmen Tribute. I must say I never really liked the song "Thanks alot, but no thanks" until I heard Judy's version. This CD will leave you exhausted but with lots of happy memories. It will also leave you wishing that Judy Kaye recorded more often!!

    I'm a long time fan of mr. rubalcaba, having heard him for the first time in his amazing rendition of agua de beber, performed at the concert for jobim organized by herbie hancock...
    I was mesmerized then, only to be once more struck by the uncanny resourcefulness of this pianist-composer...
    I agree witht he last commentator, this CD realy is arguablly his best, in terms of live energy , compositions, and soloings..
    While his latest cd's, inner voyage and Supernova offer a new insight into the musician who is in constant search of new directions and perhaps a more mature Rubalcaba, no doubt this here is the stuff legends are made of..

    when i heard gonzalo rubalcaba at the blue note, i did not believe that there was only one person was playing the piano at that time. i could go on to describe his technical skills and musical creativity but let me just say this: being a serious jazz pianist myself, i am very much into herbie hancock and chick corea, two of the greatest jazz pianists that have ever lived. i am a huge herbie hancock fan, and i have about 15 of his albums. however i do not hesitate for a moment to inform you that mr. rubalcaba BLOWS THEM AWAY and by no stretch of the imagination either. buy this album, listen to his piano solo on pisando el cespid, and then you will discover what latin jazz piano can be in the hands of a pure monster!(by the way, i have five of his albums, and this is by far the best one)

      Recorded in Havana, this is a Santería ceremony to honor and evoke Elegguá. Elegguá is known as a multisided trickster and gatekeeper. A 'güiro', which refers to the shaker instrument also refers to the ceremony and style of music. These events occur frequently in Havana using güiros (also refered to as abwes and chekeres), a conga and a bell (usually played on a hoe blade call 'guataca'). This type of ceremony is very similar to what some call a 'bembe'. This CD is over 79 minutes long and covers the most important aspects of this event.
