There's a renaissance going on in jazz violin, with more exceptional players--Regina Carter, India Cooke, and Mark Feldman--than at any time since the 1930s. Billy Bang can take considerable responsibility for that. He's been an inventive, hard-swinging improviser since the 1970s, blending country fiddle and urban street-corner directness with techniques that reach to the avant-garde. While he's touched on many bases in his career, from his Tribute to Stuff Smith with Sun Ra and the chamber jazz of the String Trio of New York to improvised solo violin and hip-hop settings, this quartet's idiom is primarily the modal, modern mainstream of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. It's a style the group plays with rugged and blues-rich vigor and one that Bang uses to create solos of emotional depth and raw beauty on moving originals like the ballad "At Play in the Fields of the Lord," the gospel tune "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," and Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower." On "One for Jazz," Bang uses words and pizzicato violin to make an effective tribute to the late drummer Dennis Charles. Londoner Alexis T. Pope on piano is a real find, ranging from stark simplicity to densely chromatic invention, and the music is solidly anchored by bassist Curtis Lundy, another adroit soloist, and drummer Codaryl Moffett. Bang is an original, and this is a fine sequel to Bang On, his 1997 CD in a similar vein. --Stuart Broomer

See My Comment On Todd's Post, Plus A Few From Me!.......2006-12-31
Lots more I could say, like why isn't Styx in the R&R Hall Of Fame? HELLO? Oh, and Tommy Shaw IS a genius, and the driving force behind the band, who also bailed Dennis' bacon out of the fire, but let's not get personal. Tommy seems above all of that, even if "others" aren't. He's gracious even about DeYoung on Return To Paradise's DVD. That man's got class!
ROCK ON TOMMY, JY and the BOYS! You'll always have my attention!
Great remake of some classics........2006-12-19
If you have been looking for some new Styx music - buy it. The remake of many classic songs are a fresh look into the music of Styx. A truly remarkable collection.
Not worthy of Styx name.......2006-11-13
Just another Example of Shaw and Young Squeezing every last Nickel from the Styx name. They Fired DDY to do this Garbage?. With out him they must have ran out of ideas.
Merely Pleasant.......2006-10-06
I Am the Walrus - was never a favorite of mine, and Styx didn't hurt it here, but they didn't do anything to make it theirs either.
The same can be said for virtually every other song on this CD except:
A Salty Dog - misses Gary Brooker's vocal.
Manic Depression - besides Hendrix his own bad self, the best cover of this was done by King's X on the Dogman CD.
Locomotive Breath - is remarkably punchless compared to the Jethro Tull original.
Wishing Well - I wish they hadn't done it. Suffers from a horrible vocal.
Talkin' About the Good Times - very nice.
Blue Collar Man @ 2120 - I don't get the reference to 2120. And I don't see why the re-do was necessary. And I don't care for the arrangement.
My criteria for a review of a cover: If I'd heard these songs for the first time by the cover artist, would I buy the record - yes, I'm that old - anyway?
In this case, no.
Save your money. Better yet, buy the originals.
I'm just glad I bought it used.
album title should be "Styx covers the Classics".......2006-09-06
I have very rarely ever completely regretted the purchase of any music CD...until now.
I have been out of the loop on Styx's releases over the last few years, but I did know that Dennis DeYoung was out of the band. Worst move Styx ever made. Apparently DeYoung was the only one with any song-writing talent. Realizing this, the rest of the band has decided to become a "cover" band. What a waste.
Styx used to be great band with a music style that ranged all over the board, but they had a sound and character that was uniquely, Styx.
A lot of the songs on this CD are great songs, but they were better by the original artists. I don't buy a Styx album to hear them cover other artist's stuff. I buy it because I want to hear new Styx stuff. There are a couple songs on this CD I didn't recognize, but the songwriting credits don't list any current band member names, so I assume they are covers as well.
Sad end to a formerly great band.

Japanese Edition.......2006-05-12
1998's Big Bang Theory is another solid release from Canadian melodic rockers Harem Scarem. With Big Bang Theory, the band continued to refine their modern melodic rock sound. Where many melodic rock bands opt for a Journey/Foreigner-based style, Harem Scarem's music has a more modern, radio-friendly sound. Of course radio wouldn't dare play a band like Harem Scarem, which is one reason for its total irrelevance. It's hard to find a good comparison for a band like this. I see similarities to other AOR/melodic rock acts like Vaughn/From the Inside and Emerald Rain, but I'm constantly reminded of a more laid back version of the Foo Fighters (no, really) when I spin this disc. Either way it is first class melodic rock.
NOTE: There are two versions of Big Bang Theory - the standard version and a Japanese import. Both contain 10 tracks, but Wasted Time, Without You, What I Do, and New Religion are exclusive to the standard edition. The Japanese edition replaces those songs with Reload, Tables Turning, Seas of Dissention, and Never Have It All. I'm used to seeing a bonus track or two on a Japanese import CD, but this is the first time I've seen entirely different track listings.
The track listing for the standard edition is as follows:
1. Turn Around
2. Wasted Time
3. So Blind
4. Without You
5. Climb the Gate
6. What I Do
7. Sometimes I Wish
8. New Religion
9. Lying
10. In My State of Mind

2. Climb the Gate
3. Reload
4. Tables Turning
5. Turn Around
6. Seas of Dissention
7. Sometimes I Wish
8. Never Have It All
9. Lying
10. In My State of Mind
Reloading Time.......2001-01-27
Compared with their masterpiece Mood Swings this 1998 album has more modern rock taste. So Blind, Reload(my #1 favorite) show their direction toward wholesome American modern pop rock. This might not please die-hard Harem Scarem fans who love early albums. But songwriting skills shown in every track of this album is top-rate
As a new Harem Scarem fan who instantly fell in love with Mood Swings I find relieved to hear the songs like Seas of Dissession reminding me of MS.
In retrospect this album was the premonition to the Rubber, launch of new era of their career.

Complex, but listenable jazz violinist.......2001-03-16
I'vw been listening to excerpts from many of the jazz violin albums. This album is my favorite from the group that I recently purchased. I had never heard of Billy Bang before. So many of the violinists seemed old-fashioned or too simple or too abstractly avant-guarde or too electronic or simply not very jazz-like. Billy Bang fits in comfortably with my post-bop jazz sensibility.
