Amazon.com essential recording

Bessie Smith was crowned the Empress of the Blues, and, while this moniker was well deserved, she was much more. A prolific recording artist, Smith was quite an eclectic performer. In fact, she may have been one of the first true crossover artists. This neat two-disc set gives the listener a good sampling of her wide repertoire. Smith is backed up by some of the best jazz musicians of her era. Her rendition of "St Louis Blues" for example, features the horn work of a young Louis Armstrong. Smith was not above doing such suggestive material as "Kitchen Man" or "Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl" and could breath new life into a pop chestnut like "Alexander's Ragtime Band." And when Smith sang "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," she knew what she was talking about. The title of this album says it all. --Lars Gandil

4 out of 5 stars Bessie never made "early videos".......2007-03-01

The reviewer below is misinformed. Bessie never made "early attempts at video." She made exactly one appearance on film, in "St. Louis Blues," and it is amazing for the power and dignity that she brings to it, even though she is cast as woman treated like a doormat by "Jimmie." But it is a national treasure because were it not for that 17-minute clip (you can find it on youtube), there would be no record of her facial expressions, movements, majesty singing live.

4 out of 5 stars Bessie's the Bomb!.......2006-10-03

BESSIE SMITH is undoubtedly the Great Godmother of Blues and was a legend in her own time. Her influence was seen in many singers who followed, including Janis Joplin her often referred to Bessie as being her primary inspiration. Supposedly Bessie was the inspiration for the character "Shug Avery" in one of America's most important films, The Color Purple. Bessie Smith's original recordings were produced on so-called "Race Records," marketed for the segregated African-American community (they were considered too sexual for the likes of lily white listeners.) Bessie made a few early rather regrettable "videos" of her songs; her attempts at a breakthrough into movies were equally unfortunate. She had no dramatic training and the studios only saw her cast as the perennial docile or happy-go-lucky black maid--and Bessie wasn't having any of that.

The selected anthology is expertly remastered. It features `Taint Nobody's Bizness If I do; St. Louis Blues; and the politically incorrect Send Me to the `Lectric Chair. It looses 1 Star only because it should have included two or three selections found elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars WHEN THE EMPRESS STRUTTED HER STUFF.......2006-09-13

What this writer would not have given to be able to see Bessie Smith in her prime and in her glory. Bessie is an acquired taste. By that I mean that when listening to her recordings, especially if done in chronological order as here, it takes time until you are emerged in the music. Then you do not want to turn the damn thing off.

Bessie Smith was no Billie Holliday. That shows no disrespect for either talent. Although Billie covered a number of Bessie's songs her's is a more stylized rendition for a different, generally more urban and urbane audience, than the juke joints Bessie, unfortunately, had, to play at. That said, for sheer power and depth of raw feeling- go to Bessie. Many a tough situation in my life got, at least partially, smoothed over listening to Bessie by the hour. What else can one say. Stand out songs here are St. Louis Blues and After You've Gone.

5 out of 5 stars Sugar in my bowl.......2006-01-06

Bessie Smith had one of the most powerfull, expressive and recognizable voices of the 20th Century. Her talent as a vocalist in the studio, as well as her stage performance made her a star that changed the way of music forever. This collection of 36 Bessie's classic recordings is simply one of the best, and most comprehensive collections of her work. It is, as other reviewers said, surely missing a handful of records that could also be considered Essential, but this collection never-the-less, hits the spot for any casucal fan or even the most avid devourer of Bessie Smith's music. The 2 Disc set is Essential Bessie, and also, Essential - period.

5 out of 5 stars essential.......2004-10-09

The title says it all. If you have only one Bessie Smith cd in your collection ( and we all need AT LEAST one - she is THAT influential, THAT soulful, THAT powerful a performer ) then this is it. It covers all sorts of songs, from interpretations of standards , to racy ( for their time ) innuendo-filled blues numbers, to love songs. A warning - these songs were recorded in the twenties and thirties, and all have that far-away, tinny sound to them, as if Smith were singing down a cardboard tube directly onto record. Even though the sound is admittedly dated, the power of the performances is undeniable.

Backed by a rotating roster of jazz stars, Smith's potent delivery made her a peerless star of classic female blues, combining a fiercely independent, almost defiant approach with subtly effective tinges of vulnerability. Early cuts such as "Downhearted Blues," which supposedly saved Columbia records from extinction in 1923, and "T'aint Nobody's Bizness If I Do" feature only Clarence Williams's piano behind her, but it's her work with Louis Armstrong that truly stands out-Satchmo majestically bobs and weaves his cornet around Smith's lines on "St. Louis Blues," "Reckless Blues," "I Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle," and the ragtime chestnut "You've Been a Good Old Wagon." Unfortunately, Columbia offers buyers only two options: this cursory 16-song introduction or an exhaustive five-volume double-CD series. --Marc Greilsamer

3 out of 5 stars The Collection - Bessie Smith.......2002-04-09

For the purist. Not digitally remastered so it does not have the same sound quality that we are used to hearing today. For that reason the lyrics will often be unclear and sound like they are being sung from very far off. And they are - the distant past.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT addition to any quality music collection.......2002-02-07

This is a great disc. It is my first disc of old blues crooners and I plan to continue exploring the genre. She has so much SOUL!! The old analog sound gives character to the disc but is not too disracting from the music. You can feel the history in the recording but can easily feel and relate to the emotions that Betty is tellin.

The sound quality is excellent. Bessie Smith the singer is excellent. I've listened to the CD three times and enjoy it more each time I hear it. First rate. I'd give it 6 stars if there were that many available. She has a good voice for blues and she never sings off key. The piano backing is nice too. I look forward to listening to this CD again and again.

Album Description

Bessie Smith was not the first to record a blues - indeed her early career was not even as a blues singer - yet she stands astride the genre like a colossus. As well as her fame as an entertainer, she was a formidable human being. She simply refused to recognise opposition - incredibly, one night in 1927, she faced down the feared Ku Klux Klan. She was born poor in 1894, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Both parents died while Bessie was still young and she was raised by her older sister, Viola. To augment Viola's meagre earnings as a laundress, Bessie and her older brother Clarence took to the streets as entertainers. In time, Bessie obtained regular work as a dancer and chorus girl. By 1921, when she was living in Philadelphia, Bessie was a star. She had several unsuccessful tests for recording companies. In February 1923, after she'd moved to New York, Columbia gave her a chance. Her first cuts, made on February 15th, are lost. However, the next day she recorded Gulf Coast Blues and Down Hearted Blues with piano backing by Clarence Williams, who had written the former. This combination was released as Bessie's first disc. It sold 750,000. All her skills are on display. Initially, Gulf Coast was the A-side, but it was the honesty and clarity of Down Hearted that people flocked to buy. Soon after her recording debut, Bessie and new husband, Jack Gee, discovered that she was signed not to Columbia, but to Clarence Williams, who was appropriating half Bessie's recording fee. The angry pair confronted Williams, who released Bessie from her contract. With Williams temporarily out of favour, a new piano accompanist was needed. Fletcher Henderson stepped in. He's featured on ten sides here and shows himself to be as self-effacing, if a little subtler, than Williams. By the end of June, with a decent supply of material in the can, Walker released Bessie for a Southern tour. Her hit record had preceded her and the shows were sell-outs. During this tour, Bessie also discovered the emerging power of radio. Most shows were then transmitted `live' so, while earning a fee for performing, she promoted her records. The final two cuts on CD:A feature Bessie duetting with fellow blues singer Clara Smith. Bessie generally kept other blueswomen at bay, but Clara was an exception. Her voice here is plaintive and flexible, but Bessie dominates. Having mainly confined her to piano accompaniment, Columbia now began adding extra instruments. The first two tracks on CD:B, have the singer in the company of a decent clarinettist and pianist. Presumably Fletcher Henderson was needed elsewhere because he was back the next day. From Bessie's January 1924 sides, Frosty Mornin' Blues is surely a gem - its more traditional blues instrumentation, with Harry Reser on guitar, draws a performance of feeling from Bessie - once she and Reser accommodate to to the slow rhythm. Reser returned to help Bessie deliver an ironic interpretation of Easy Come Easy Go Blues. After this session, it was back to live work in Nashville. She was popular with both white and black audiences in the south, although they were, of course, segregated. Other black performers seem to have modified their acts for whites, cleaning them up if necessary. Not Bessie. She was in the vanguard of a generation of black performers which wouldn't conform to the `yassuh' stereotype.

3 out of 5 stars Wondering about the remastering........2007-06-30

I guess I'm curious if JSP did their own transfers, or, as they do with some frequency these days, ripped off transfers from other companies. Frog Records has a tremendous Complete Bessie Smith series, featuring wonderful remasterings by J.R.T. Davies. But those are nearly $20 per cd. If they stole these versions, that might explain the reports of good sound....because the old Columbia cds are absolutely awful sonically.

5 out of 5 stars Carmel's opinion.......2007-05-13

Excellent sound quality of the earlier recordings of the most important of all blues singers.

5 out of 5 stars Wow what a range.......2007-07-07

This album highlights just how great s vocalist Susannah McCorkle was. The selection of songs demonstrates Susannah's range and talents

5 out of 5 stars "the usa,is ok,is ok,but I just can't stay".......2004-01-22

MY dream would come true if Susannah recorded a whole album of Jobim standards-you don't understand, when she sings in Portugese,I'm whittled down to at tothpick, and on my knees, and completely surrendered to the power of her influence when she words in Portugese.Every single darn rendition on this album is fabulous, she knows how to add her own to whatever it is she sings.Susannnah doesn't have the most technically capable voice in the world, but she more than makes up for it with her impeccable intuition, phrasing, feeling, and taste.Just listen to her rendition of Waters of March and try to tell me that this lady wasn't an incredibly gifted individual.LIsten to that song over and over again, and once it sheds its layers, you'll see that behind the easygoing melody and lilting beat lies a rendition filled with tortured hope, uncharcterizable sadness, and a soul searching for something more.Listen to the way she shades in every word with her true emotion.AT first I didn't get this song, but now, it drives me to tears.Fragile, trembling, frighteningly gorgeous, and heart-wrenchingly hopeful.Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive is viewed in completely new light. You Go To My Head- beautifully subtle.Adeus America-flirtacious and beautifully sung.My SWeetie Went away-gutsy and just listen to the way her voice droops and swoops down low to assume the role of this song. She can't go wrong.Forget the Diana Kralls, and Jane Monheits who belong on American Idol-Susannah is the answer to jazz these days.Don't miss out on her because she doesn't offer glossy cd packaging and because you don't hear about her every day.She has SOOOO much to offer

5 out of 5 stars Required Listening.......2003-12-30

Do yourself a favor: Set your CD player to repeat "The Waters of March" about a dozen times. Different sounds become apparent with each replay; the rhythm, the gentle melancholy, the wistfulness of the vocal phrasing; the engaging, gentle piano accompanying the heart-wrenching rhythm. This the definitive wistful version of a beautifully crafted song, poetic and pure, with the downcast eyes of a disillusioned romanticist longing for more from life. Far and away, the most sensitive, beautiful and accomplished song in its clarity, simplicity and beauty that I have ever experienced.

5 out of 5 stars Susannah puts knowledge to good use.......2002-09-05

Susannah knew a lot about popular music, not just the Great American Songbook which are the mainstay of her recordings, but also songs of more recent origin.

Although this is not one of her thematic albums, it is yet another brilliant masterpiece, including covers of everything from Bessie Smith (My sweetie went away) and Ethel Waters (Thief in the night) to Paul Simon (Still crazy after all these years). Susannah also does great covers of That ole devil called love, a Billie Holliday classic, and The lady is a tramp.

Susannah was particularly good at putting her own interpretation on old classics. Her version of the Bing Crosby/Andrews sisters song Ac-cent-tchu-ate the positive is given a completely different arrangement to the original - a wise move, as Susannah could never swing like Bing, Patty, Maxene and LaVern.

The songs are all brilliantly arranged and performed - just like any other Susannah album.

5 out of 5 stars Susannah McCorkle and her talent.......2001-12-08

Years ago I had heard Susannah McCorkle's Gershwin album and liked it (esp. "It Ain't Necessarily So.")It is so frustrating to think of such a talent suddenly being heard because of her death. I feel guilty that it wasn't til May that I rediscovered her.

FROM BESSIE TO BRAZIL offers a variety of great choices, but my favorites are "Adeus America" (you may find yourself hitting "repeat" on your CD player for this one!), "The Waters of March" and "My Sweetie Went Away." Susannah's love for Brazilian music on "Adeus" is obvious and her flair for it captivates you, especially with her word play. "The Waters of March" is breath-taking and "My Sweetie Went Away" is a channeling of Bessie Smith with Susannah's own touch. (...)

This is a good representation of Bessie Smith songs for a great price. I was also happy to hear Louis Armstrong playing on several of the selections.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Gift.......2007-01-12

I bought this CD for my dad. He loves it!! Says it's definitely worth listening to when you have the time to appreciate the whole experience.

5 out of 5 stars Should be in every Jazz Vocal Collection........2006-07-24

I have really enjoyed this Album. Susannah McCorkle's Vocal style is a little over the top but When you take into account the release date, February 1993, Most music at the time was a little over the top. I mean let's face it friends there just wasn't much good going on in music at the time.

I purchased this album to get her recording of Waters of March. In my opinion it is the best English recording of the song. She has a couple of other Brazilian tunes on the album which are all a treat. The American/English tunes a good but not as strong as the Samba beats on the album.

The Song Quality Time is the one English song that is just quirky for my personal enjoyment. I will be getting copies for my Momma and my Poppa this holiday season.
