While 1999's Ellington centenary launched a number of new tributes, homages to Duke have been appearing regularly since the '50s, as different generations of musicians explored his repertoire. The French pianist Michel Petrucciani, who died in 1999, recorded this solo exploration in 1993, emphasizing some of the most familiar material. Petrucciani brought all of his immense skill to the project, from driving left-hand rhythms to dancing right-hand runs to the dense harmonic explorations that he could add to a ballad. Petrucciani had a deep sense of swing and a vigorous attack, but it's his unabashed Gallic Romanticism that distinguishes this CD, as he turns each piece into a profound rumination, first immersing himself in a theme, then extending it until it seems to disappear in waves of overlapping emotion. His version of the limpidly beautiful "African Flower" is particularly moving. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:
Great album by the master Petrucciani.......2006-04-30
Petrucciani was one of greatest jazz pianists of the world (he died in 1999 at 36).
Despite a severe physical disability (born with osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as "glass bones"), forcing him to use a special attachment to work the pedal, he was able to become a jazz piano virtuose.
This album shows his enormous talent.
Listen, for example, the C Jam Blues track for you to understand what I mean.
Impressive.
Petrucciani in his most sincere tribute.......2004-05-10
The sense of comittment that Petrucciani gave to every one of the themes (with special emphasis in African flower), made of this CD one of the ten best recordings in that year.
All of us know (and everyday the statement seems growing) the huge poetical stature that Duke Ellington placed.
No other jazz musician has never been above him. And I must recognize that I'm a great collector of academic music, not even Gershwin could reach this height.
Ellington as composer, knew comuniccate his inner visions like no other jazz musician. When he composed he had the power to express not only his troubled emotive world, but being an exceptional witness for making us translating us to the lowest and deep regions of the soul. No matter where you're from.
Petrucciani knew it and the approach he did to his music was a superb homage, and altogether with the tribute paid by Dave Grussin the before year (1992) to Gershwin, both of these two records are the best acknowledgment that two jazz musicians have given us in the last twenty years.
Please, buy that CD . You'll be literally by the nostalgical poetry generated by Petrucciani in memoriam of that legend living who was Duke Ellington.
Must have CD for any jazz piano enthusiast.......2000-11-23
I am a jazz pianist myself and think that this is some of the most superb piano playing I have ever heard. It is highly recommended - showing incredible imagination, musical sophistication, technique and most importantly beautiful emotion. A must have addition to any collection.
A superb achievement from the recently-departed pianist........1999-03-24
The CD includes a number of classics from Duke Ellington given the special Petrucciani treatment. Having seen Michel play live several times, which was a truly unforgettable experience, this studio album misses none of the intimacy and dynamic of those performances in what can sometimes be rather flat in a studio setting. The melodies are bold, the harmonies original, the transitions beautifully dovetailed together and the whole makes a rollercoaster ride of great listening. Of special note: "Caravan" and "Take The A Train". Enjoy!
thanks Michel !.......1999-01-07
today, january 6th 1999, michel Petrucciani passed away. His tribute to Duke will remain an immortal gift, made to us, forever... thanks again. Benoit d'Hau, Paris, France.

Some Enchanted Evening is enchanting!.......2002-07-26
This album takes you on a stroll down memory lane, enchanting all the way. It is relaxing and soothing listening, and will be great background music for a candlelit dinner for two, an evening party with a mix of ages and backgrounds, or just to sing with while you get some work done. The orchestration is excellent and the performances wonderfully smooth. A hit for everyone!

"Richard Alden", best of the best!.......2006-10-15
I bougth this CD only for the track #8, from my Fair Lady "I've grown accustomed to her face", played, arranged and directed by Richard Alden, the same Ronnie Aldrich. The arrange has a little more rithm than the version of Phase 4 Stereo in "The magic moods of Ronnie Aldrich". It sounds spectacular!
The CDs from Readers Digest have some themes from Ronnie and "Richard Alden", inedits and a treasures for who loves the music of that genius od the piano
The rest of the CD has pretty songs.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent performer.......2007-03-09
This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.
A unique project.......2006-11-23
Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.
Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12
First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.
Definative.......2005-07-23
Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!
Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

A first rate musical buffet..........2005-04-25
When one dosen't want to listen to a complete symphony or concerto, but desires various moods and melodies; this disc is for them. This eclectic collection of miniatures performed by Neeme Jarvi and the Detroit Symphony is one of the best of it's kind, ever! The tracks were recorded between 1991 and 1993 and the CHANDOS sound is generally brilliant. The selections were probably drawn from other discs and though the liner notes are informative, there seems to be no program plan. This is just good music! Ellington's "Solitude", Dvorak's "Humoresque", "Clair de lune" and "The Stars and Stripes Forever" familiar pieces all on the same disc! These are all great but it is the unexpected rarities included that should be pursued. The colorful "Fete Polonaise", the two hard to find Glinka works and the almost forgotten Gershwin "Promenade" to name a few are well worth owning. So from simple beautiful themes to folksy melodies, sprawling waltzes, rousing marches, musical novelties, this CD has it all. If you like this, check out "Stokowski Transciptions" on TELARC.
For ballet fans, an excellent "Valse Fantaisie".......2002-04-10
George Balanchine referred to Mikhail Glinka as "the Mozart of Russia." So it's not surprising that he choregraphed Glinka's "Valse Fantaisie" not once, but twice.
I'm more familiar with the earlier version of the choreography (roughly 1956), because that's what I have seen performed. It features three female soloists and one male; the emphasis shifts as first one, then another female dances a pas de deux. Sometimes the other two dancers become a duo; at other points they compete for the male dancer's attention. Glinka's music lends itself perfectly to the shifting alliances among the dancers.
It's difficult to find a recording a "Valse Fantaisie," so it's fortunate that Neeme Jarvi's rendition is a good one. It has the even tempo beloved of ballet conductors, as well as the highly colored crescendos the music demands.
For a ballet completist like myself, "Valse Fantaisie" is reason enough to own this album. (There's also a version of "Stars and Stripes," another piece Balanchine used for a ballet.) But every track is worth a listen. I particularly like the unexpected Gershwin gem, "Walking the Dog." It has a sly, comic appeal that's very endearing.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable disc for DSO fans.......2000-04-24
This disc is a compendium of some of the favorite DSO encores. DSO fans can only be grateful to Jarvi, who has made it the one of the best (if not appreciated) of American orchestras. Having heard the DSO and National Symphony both many times, I can attest that the DSO deserves a better reputation. The finale, "Stars and Stripes" is played at an exilerating speed and is a great "show off" piece for this wonderful ensemble. Hats off to Jarvi!
