Leonard Bernstein's musical update of Romeo and Juliet, with a young Stephen Sondheim's brilliant lyrics, had already galvanized Broadway with its vivid reinvention as a parable of racial intolerance and generational conflict. But director Robert Wise's lavish widescreen presentation broke fresh ground by taking the story to its most impressionable audience, the teenagers who could identify directly with Tony and Maria, and opened up Jerome Robbins's kinetic choreography through bravura camera work. The original soundtrack album was not merely a huge seller but a unique touchstone for an otherwise rock-oriented audience, and its release on CD benefits from an expanded program untenable in its initial LP release, as well as a 20-bit digital transfer. With Richard Beymer, Marni Nixon (Hollywood's vocal doppelgänger of choice, here standing in for Natalie Wood), and Rita Moreno dominating, the show's bounty of terrific songs and exciting instrumental pieces remains an ear-filling treat, mixing operatic passions, tart social commentary, and high comedy. From "Tonight" to "One Hand, One Heart," "America" to "Jet Song," this is a landmark in American musical theatre and film beautifully realized on disc. --Sam Sutherland

I ordered the West Side Story cd and it came in excellent condition. it was sealed and everything and if i find anything else to buy from this seller, i will.
west side story music.......2007-04-14
C.D. in excellent condition, arrived soon after order. OH! Played at full volume--made me long to see the movie again. May just do that. The other reviewers complimented the movie orchestration and sound track--they were right.Nothing like Leonard Bernstein, Marnie Nixon, et.al.
West Side Story CD.......2007-01-24
Great music. Just like I remembered it... but even better. Very lively, great instrumentals, and wonderful voices.
LOVE it.......2007-01-09
This is my favorite musical and I love being able to rip it and have it on my MP3 for car listening.
Buy it for posterity.......2006-12-30
Yes, this is the movie version and is an important part of 1960s pop culture, but it pales in comparison to the Broadway Cast. The sound quality is sub-par, and the voices are nowhere near as strong as the 1957 Cast. The movie also cuts some important music, or rewoks the score until it is completely different from the original. The order was also changed from the original show, and it is hard to listen to for someone that is familiar with the original. Overall, 1957 cast over this one, but buy it for the memories if you must.

Customer Reviews:
Interlude is great........2007-03-09
I wanted a CD that captured the mood and feelings of the movie. The score sort of recycles itself. Its important to know the title of the song so that you can understand the music. This is really a great Soundtrack.
My favorite part is the interlude, its a little long but how else can you capture the whole movie in just a few minutes!
great musik.......2007-03-08
This cd is the parfait double of the film.
You just have to lesson it for being in the film. Great tunes.
A must have!.......2007-02-21
This is a good cd, although it was not exactly what I was expecting. I was hoping for more lyrics in the songs rather than just the music, as it was sung in the movie. Although I love the music just the same.
Put it on and dream.......2007-01-09
The music is so pleasant. It is something that inspires thought.
Lots of instrumental pieces.......2007-01-05
This is a great CD, but if you are looking for a lot of gospel tunes you might be disappointed, there are many instrumental peices, that are pretty however.

Album Description
"Moonlight In Vermont" may have made Johnny Smith famous, but this 1954 session with rhythm guitarist Perry Lopez, bassist Arnold Fishkin and drummer Don Lamond is his masterpiece. Originally issued over two 10" LPs, these 13 songs shows an innovative guitarist with astonishing technique and lightning-fast mind. These gems are ripe for rediscovery in the guitar world. The closing "Lullaby Of Birdland" features Smith playing a duet with himself through early overdubbing. The title tune, a Johnny Smith original, became a Top Ten hit six years later for The Ventures. Remastered in 24 bit from the original mono tapes.
Customer Reviews:
Classic guitar playing.......2006-11-10
How does one rate a singularity? There aren't enough stars. Johnny Smith is one of a kind and we all should be grateful to have the benefit of his talent and love for music and the guitar.
great cd WORTHLESS COPY PROTECT.......2006-11-10
I agree with all ppl saying this cd is wirth the money and contains great music, i really really do, therefor the 5 stars.
Now for rating the publisher minus 1278 stars, beware of new issues with "copy controlled" copy protection for it sucks big time. The cd might encounter "some problems on certain players like carstereo's ".
Well let me tell you, the thing will only play on my pc and on my cd player. I cant play it on any other stereo and not even on some ppl's normal cd players...... i thought about checking every cd i buy from now for the stamp of the copy protection being on or not but i see here that amazon doesnt have a picture where it is on the cd. So how can i be sure my next cd will not have the same stupid gimmick on it...
I will not buy any EMI cd's printed after 2004 anymore....
Enjoy a REALLY REALLY great cd but DO remember i warned you:)
The original "Walk, don't run".......2006-07-29
Until this CD came out last summer you had to either buy the Mosaic 8 disc set or the Japanese release of Kaleidoscope to hear Johnny play "Walk, don't run." Well, now you can hear it and it, alone, is worth the price of the disc. After hearing Johnny's version it's amazing how simple the Ventures' version seems. Even the great Chet Atkins played WDR for Johnny one time and Johnny graciously started playing along and Chet was speechless. Everything else is great on this disc too. Johnny Smith is legendary among jazz guitarists. Deservedly so. His chords and voicings are unlike anyone else. Then his single note lines are so fluid but musical. This is a great place to start listening to Johnny and also the Moonlight in Vermont CD, as well as Legends. Perhaps the greatest thing about Johnny is at the height of his popularity he gave it all up and left NYC to take care of his daughter after his wife's death. He never regretted it he says. You have, then, a music legend with the right priorities. A true class act. What will be really great is if Verve will ever put out their Johnny Smith CD (with his Gibson model on the cover)or someone will release his solo album, "The Man with the Blue Guitar" on CD.
Great recording, great artist.......2005-09-30
I mainly bought this CD to hear the original recording of "Walk Don't Run." Johnny Smith wrote it, Chet Atkins covered it, etc. For those of us who only ever heard the Ventures' version, it is a revelation that this was originally a jazz tune.
Oh yeah, the rest of the CD is excellent. Johnny Smith has very few recordings available, to my knowledge. I encourage all students and/or admirers of fine, melodic playing to seek out all of them.
The Legend of Smith.......2005-09-22
Johnny Smith a few years was essentially a forgotten man. Not well known amongst jazz guitarists, let alone the wider jazz community, a few years ago the vast majority of this man's work was out of print. Thankfully, all that is changing with releases such as this. 'Walk, don't run!' proves why Smith has been held in awe by his peers and fans alike and bears testimony to why he is regarded as one of the foremost post Charlie Christian guitarists. From the lightning fast runs of 'What's New' and 'Lover Man' to the chordal sophistication of 'Sophisticated Lady' and the boppish lines of 'I'll remember April' and ''S Wonderful', Smith was the complete musician. He has often been described as a 'scientist' because of the precision with which he plays; but don't let that put you off: his music is anything but cerebral. It's just that Smith had the most prodigious technique to express anything he wanted to with a beautiful, poetic tone: an artist and scientist in equal measure.
If you are a fan of jazz guitar this recording is essential. If you are a fan of jazz this record is still essential. For those of you who feel perhaps that the guitar still doesn't 'cut it' like horns do, an anecdote: when Smith played at Birdland, Bird himself was one of Smith's biggest fans, consistently sitting near the front listening intently to Smith. That in itself should be good enough recommendation to buy this.

Album Description
In 1952, guitar virtuoso Johnny Smith began recording for Teddy Reig's Roost Records and he hit big with his first session. Adding Stan Getz to his regular quartet, he created a spellbinding version of "Moonlight In Vermont" which became a best-selling record far beyond the jazz audience.
Reig paired Smith with Getz again and then with Zoot Sims and Paul Quinichette. While they never matched their first hit in sales, the created some great jazz. All 16 tunes by Smith with these tenor giants are gathered on this CD, remastered in 24 but from the original tapes.
Customer Reviews:
Mood Swings.......2006-07-31
In 1954, I started college as a guitar major, and was entranced by guitarists who could play "standards" in a manner that erased reality and created a mood that enveloped listeners. In those days, Johnny Smith was in the forefront of the pack. Now years later, listening to this CD still creates a mellow mood. I plan to use this CD as a holiday gift for my offspring. I know they will benefit from this timeless music, as will any person of any age.
Wow! What an album.......2006-07-29
I can point to a few albums that really got me into jazz and this is one. Johnny plays on this album with Stan Getz and others. It is a great album. The title song was the Downbeat song of the year for 1952. One knock on Johnny Smith is that he wasn't jazz mainly because his playing was so clean--it sounded too rehearsed, too clean. There are a few outtakes one the CD that will put that to rest. Johnny, himself, admitted he never really thought of himself as a "jazz" guitarist, but more of a session musician. He was on staff with the NBC orchestra back in the day. I think one thing is clear though and this CD bears it out is that Johnny is an important guitarist in the history of jazz guitar. He is the connection between Charlie Christian, and Django Reinhardt to more contemporary players. It's ironic how a man with such a common name made such beautiful music.
Belongs in any Jazz Collection.......2005-09-26
This album is a jazz classic and definately belongs in any collection. Johnny Smith guitar style is fairly unique and while technically brilliant, there's always a purpose to the soloing. Also Stan Getz is just wonderful.
Alot of hints of modern jazz in this ol' album.......2004-06-14
This guy was really a great guitarist, and songwritter. On this album he has some of the most recognizeable jazz tunes ever, such as the classic 'yesterday'. This album really helps me close in the gap between old jazz, and modern jazz. He showcases alot of what was to come in the near future. This is a very good jazz album id recommend to any fan of jazz.

Brilliant Jazz Guitar.......2006-08-01
I came across this gem on iTunes last month and have been absolutely mezmerized every since! I can't remember ever hearing a guitar player as good as Johnny Smith, and I've heard many, many guitarists in my 50 years on this planet.
This isn't hard-bop or blues-based music (in general), but it's just beautiful. Hank Jones is THE greatest piano player to accompany guitar players, bar none.
Please do yourself a huge favor and but this one ASAP!!
The Sound Of The Johnny Smith Guitar.......2005-04-15
Tasteful playing with feeling is what this recording is. All the musicians are obviously concerned with musical elements such as BLEND and are no doubt concious of creating a jazz masterpiece, instead of merely demonstrating technical proficiency, (which is beautifully expressed on the entire album). The melodic approach of theme followed by extensive development make this recording a joy to listen to, over and over again. If you are interested in soulful renditions of timeless classics, you simply must include this recording in your collection. According to the CD back cover, this product is a 24-bit remaster of the original three track master, which in my opinion is very well done.
What a sound - what taste - what a great player.......2003-09-05
I remember when my uncle - himself a jazz radio announcer - decided to let go of his LPs, and called me to come up to New York to get them. He had at least a thousand. I buried myself with them, and he watched as I threw aside the ones I already had or didn't think looked cool. After putting aside the Johhny Smith LP that makes up one-half of this CD, he stopped me. "Are you nuts?" I can still hear him saying, and he was a musician, also, "This is one of the best guitar players out there!" Here was a square looking guy with a crewcut, and the LP cover was nothing to write home about, but my uncle Sterling knew his jazz so I took it to humor him. Man, was I in for a suprise. The sound alone (he had a guitar named after him) was killer, and the licks seemed effortless. "Out Of Nowhere", and "Some Of These Days" knocked me out. Still not as well known as many lesser players, Smith never plays a superfluous note. He is a consummate pro. I haven't heard the second LP on this CD, so 4 stars, now.
Just Perfect!.......2002-06-20
This is one of the best jazz guitar albums one can listen to. Johnny Smith is a master. No wonder all jazz guitar players are crazy about him.
Johnny Smith - Mr Jazz Guitar.......2002-01-03
If you are a collector or starting to build a collection of eclectic jazz guitar work, this album should find its way into your collection, easily. Like the majority of Johnny's work,
he shows time and again, that he belongs at the very top with the Jazz Guitar immortals. His cleanliness, speed and overall
versatility is always graced with his impecable taste and song
selection. There is alot of music here and all of it worth listening to over and over again. "Gypsy In My Soul" and 'Round Midnight' are two of my favorites here. Enjoy!

Van Eps is stellar.......2006-11-30
This is an excellent album. The first twelve tracks are Johnny Smith, and he is a powerful guitar player. That being said, when the first Van Eps track, Cheek to Cheek, comes on, I am in heaven. If you like a clean, electric guitar sound that is extremely rich and full thanks to an added seventh string, the second half of the album will do you well. Van Eps makes lush, intricate music, and I can't get enough of it.
intro to guitar greats to grandson.......2006-11-05
GREAT CD GOT THIS TO LET GRANDSON HEAR SOME GREAT GUITAR MUSIC AS HE IS LEARNING TO PLAY THE GUITAR HIMSELF.
A pleasant surprise.......2006-08-04
As a guitarist, curiosity lead me to this recording. I have always been a fan of Johnny Smith. The surprise came when I discovered what a remarkable guitarist George Van Eps is. His style is so smooth and fluid and his use of the seven string adds a dimension few guitarists attain. The Johnny Smith half of the recording was a bit too neo-classical for my tastes but the George Vam Eps portion made up for it.
Johnny Smith is THE greatest of all time.......2006-07-13
This albumm is another vintage GREAT PERFORMANCE by Johnny Smith who easily is the greatest guitar player of all time. Frankly, I hardly ever listen to the other half of the album but I do listen and thoroughly enjoy the GREAT Johnny Smith. If you love guitar YOU WILL LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!
Two masters display their artistry of solo jazz guitar........1999-03-06
Taken from two separate sessions from legendary jazz guitar greats Johnny Smith and George Van Eps, this CD presents solo performances with unequaled technical mastery and harmonic sophistication. Johnny Smith plays a mixed selection of jazz standards, original tunes and classical pieces. His approach consistantly swings with spirit, precision and articulation. George Van Eps, arguably the father (grandfather?) of modern jazz guitar, reads through such tunes as 'A Foggy Day' & 'I Could Write a Book' before he completely (and amazingly) reconstructs them harmonically and melodically. For this disc to offer either of these two great players would have made it highly recommended, but to feature both, it becomes essential.

Customer Reviews:
A lot of 70's Music.......2005-09-20
If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.
Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25
Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

Add Her to Your List.......2007-06-08
Just when you think you've heard all the 1950's standards singers, most people miss Beverly Kenney - and this is one outstanding album. Unlike a lot of LP's of the era, they wisely let her voice stand front and center in front of a small combo. She's so good she doesn't need to shout or over sing. Every track is sexy and wistful, full of emotions even though she sings in a conversational volume - she's a great interpreter with a great voice ... and even though the arrangements are traditional, her vocal performances make them seem very modern - almost like the first A3 singer.
Great Voice.......2007-02-19
Beautiful fresh sounding voice. The supporting instruments are a little much as is typical of light jazz in the era but Kenney is definitely worth listening too.
the BEST of the BEST.......2007-01-04
HEY ITS BEVERLY KENNEY. HER FIRST ON ROOST...and maybe her BEST. every tune is a gem. from SURRY to BALL & CHAIN to a perfect 50s diddy DESTINATION MOON. Kenney's THIS LITTLE TOWN IS PARIS always reminds me of Chris Connor's All About Ronnie...if you dont know this singer YOU SHOULD. you will end up owning every thing she ever recorded. she's the BEST of the BEST.

Description
What do people like about Johnny and his music? Fans will say
"What you see is what you get
great vocals, great songs and kick-ass music you can take to the bank!" Born in Phoenix, AZ, on 9/11/88, don't let the young age of this guitarist and singer/songwriter discount his talent and ability. He took to the stage at 15, and the past 3 years and well over 200 live shows are now his declaration of independence
Johnny has COME OF AGE! On 9/13/04, Johnny recorded his first CD "Live at the Pub" at the Iron Horse Pub in Wichita Falls. Released in April '05, "Live at the Pub" won Best Live CD of 2006 and Johnny won Texas Entertainer of the Year at the Payne County Line "Oklahoma Music Awards" in Stillwater. With over 2,500 units moved to date, "Live at the Pub" is still enjoying active sales at performances and over the internet. Johnny's first studio project, "IGNITION" was recorded in February '06 at Cedar Creek Studios in Austin. Produced by Mike McClure, this CD includes 10 new original compositions and is available at all Hastings book stores in northwest Texas and Oklahoma as well as on-line at lonestarmusic.com and Johnny's web site. With sales of the IGNITION project expected to far exceed the LIVE CD, Johnny is already 11 songs into the un-named 2007-08 project and continues to write and perform his music with a passion and energy appreciated by musicians and fans of all ages. Johnny started his career in February 2004 by opening for The Great Divide in Denton, TX. Since then, he has performed with touring artists Cross Canadian Ragweed, Pat Green, Gary Allan, Jack Ingram, Jason Boland & the Stragglers, Shooter Jennings, Gary P. Nunn, The Bleu Edmondson Band, Wade Bowen and West 84, Stoney LaRue, The Mike McClure Band, Django Walker, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Cooder Graw, Susan Gibson, Tommy Alverson, Kevin Fowler, Cory Morrow, Charlie Robison, The Burtschi Bros., Micky and the Motorcars, Aaron Watson, The Randy Rogers Band, No Justice, Texas Jack, The Mike Mancy Band, Miranda Lambert, Deana Carter, LeeAnn Rimes, Trick Pony, Bobby Pinson and Keith Anderson along with many other local and regional artists throughout Texas and Oklahoma. Johnny performs solo acoustic or acoustic duo with his teacher and mentor, Jason Brown at Texas/Oklahoma venues like The White Elephant/Fort Worth, TX, Roosters/ Stillwater, OK, The Wormy Dog/OKC and the Lazy Boy Supper Club in Archer City, TX. Johnny's acoustic partners include Mike McClure, Cody Canada, Wade Bowen, Bleu Edmondson, Stoney LaRue, Micah Aills, Brandon Jenkins and Mike Eli
and he looks forward to working with as many artists as possible. When performing with a band, Wichita Falls, TX, rockers and friends A.A. Bottom provide the backbone and collaboration as The Johnny Cooper Band. With their own list of accomplishments and 17 years of performing experience, A.A. Bottom is an exciting addition to the live performances. Johnny was inspired and brought to the music world by watching Cody Canada, Wade Bowen and Bleu Edmondson perform live at local venues. The next generation of "southern rebel red dirt music", Johnny finds inspiration from established artists like Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty, The Eagles, Hoyt Axton and Van Morrison along with country legends Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Jerry Jeff Walker. Johnny is also drawn to Jonny Lang, Sublime, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and many of the classic rockers like Lynard Skynard, and AC/DC. Johnny's performance experience has taken him to Wichita, KS, Paris, AR, Oklahoma City, Norman, Stillwater, Duncan, Okeene, Ada, Lawton and Lake Texoma/Madill, OK. Texas travels include Vernon, Wichita Falls, Burkburnett, Iowa Park, Holliday, Seymour, Archer City, Mineral Wells, Fort Worth, Dallas, Denton, Glen Rose, Star, Lubbock, Odessa, Midland, San Angelo, Austin, and the legendary Gruene Hall in New Braunfels. Johnny was an early graduate in September '06 from Wichita Falls High School where he was a member of the tennis team, the acappella choir and was a Peer Assistance Leader. Johnny's ambition and passion for writing and performing creates the focus of taking his music and message "on the road" full time in 2006 - 2007.
