Album Description
The music From Autumn to Ashes created on Holding A Wolf By The Ears heralds a new beginning for the New York-based band. "I want to do everything I can to get people to realize that this is really like a new band," says Francis Mark, lead vocalist.
The most recognizable sign of this reinvention is Mark's recent shift from drummer to drummer and full-time vocalist, a result of the departure of former lead singer Benjamin Perri. But over the course of the album's 12 tracks, it becomes clear that for the band, that more has changed than just a voice.
Customer Reviews:
A surprising release.......2007-06-06
This record was quite a surprise for me as a more recent fan of From Autumn To Ashes. Indeed, my friend was the one who introduced me to this band with their 2005 release "Abandon Your Friends". I enjoyed this record thoroughly as it had a good blend of soft emo songs as well as brutal and well exectuted metalcore songs. Little did I know that this was not at all the same style of music the band had previously produced.
Therefore, when I listened to this cd I was as eagerly waiting for the beautiful softer songs as well as the metalcore songs. I was quite surprised to find out that there were actually no soft songs to be found on this cd but instead a series of well-written metal songs with melodic choruses. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised to find improved metal songs but I was disappointed to not find a single softer track.
The drumming on this release is significantly stronger than on the last album, indeed, more blast beats can be noticed and the fills sound more like what they did on tracks like "The After Dinner payback" which is good to hear. The clean vocals have also improved slightly, although we can still hear that Mark is not fully confident (his voice is still slightly shaky at times). However, I am quite disappointed with Mark's screams. Indeed, the last singer (Ben Perri) performed very strong and confident metalcore vocals while Mark has more of a bark which does get annoying after a while.
From Autumn To Ashes are obviously moving forwards with their metal roots, however I do believe that a change of screaming vocals could be very benefitial for the band.
I would recommend any old fan of the band to definitely get their hands on this new disc, however if people who listened to "Abandon Your Friends" mainly enjoyed the softer songs, I would not recommend this new release.

Wow! They came back around!.......2007-05-09
Awesome! Spectacular! Magical! But seriously this is a great album. I was a little discouraged from the last release, but this one makes up for it. Good job, FATA
It just gets better.......2007-05-08
For those of you who are FATA fans, and were a little discouraged at the softer edge of Abandon Your Friends, Holding a Wolf By the Ears will knock your socks back off. They took the extreme edge from their earlier work, and made it RAGE! This has to be the a close tie with The Fiction We Live for one of the greatest albums of all time. Trust me, if you are a true fan, this does not disappoint, it makes you smile and remember just why we love FATA!
surprising.......2007-04-26
I'd have to agree with these reviews prior to mine. I'm not happy to say, but i havent been listening to FATA for awhile now. The abandon your friends really put my thoughts about the band down (Though there is a reason if you read up). My buddy put a new cd of FATA in the other day, i had no idea they had come out with a new album. Once i heard it i said "this sounds different", then i realized there was a new vocalist that turned out to be the back-up vocalist from before. The album blew me away, and i really believe this is the way it should've been the whole time. I really never liked Perri(former singer), and if you havent hear them yet definately take a listen. ROCK ON GUYS!
never hold one album above any other........2007-04-17
on record, i give this 4.5 stars. i'm sick of two things. one, saying that an album by a specific artist will never be as good as "X" album they recorded before. two, cutting down anyone that likes a certain style of music and commenting that if you like "X" kinda music, it's not the greatest out there. there can never be two similar cd's released by the same artist anymore due to life/personal struggles the singer is feeling and records personally, within his/her heart. an artist can be experiencing one set of struggles in 1994, a complete different set in 1998, therefore the album in 94 will be much different than the on in 98. it's very unfair to suggest that an artist needs to be more like they were in year "x." holding a wolf by the ears, today, is very good for the music that is out at this time. take much of the crap that is on the mainstream radio..ie "fallout boy," "panic, at the disco," "my chemical romance." this album is great all around, from the vocals to the technical guitars at times, especially that i has a harder, faster all around tempo. you'll want to kick stuff around your room and punch your dog. it starts off fast and ends hard. to suggest that francis only hurts this band taking on all vocals (singing and screaming) is false. they can always get a singer/screamer to fill in to supplement their live show. this is ultimately about selling records, isn't it? i miss, at times, the sad feel of songs like "no trivia," or "lilics and lolitas," even "abandon your friends" at the end of their previous adventure, but the hard feel of this album makes me believe that they are more angry/hostile with this album. for those of you who cut down anyone who feel they listen to the "hardest" music, then correct them to whom you feel are the "hardest" music out there, remember one thing. music is basically an opinion. one person can have a complete different opinion than you, and that's just their view. shame on you saying that artist "x" is the example of "hard" music. your "hard" music can be very tame to another. so lay off the lessons. let those who like this album enjoy it and don't try to suggest your a teacher of agressive music, because at your core, you probably enjoy soft 80's music or hillary duff or some crap. enjoy this album if you like it, it's great, it rocks just as hard as underoath's "define the great line," or darkest hour's "undoing ruin."

Customer Reviews:
a bit diffrent but still good.......2006-05-18
Reading these reviews it is obvious that alot of people dont like this album, but at the same time many people do, so it all comes down to your own tastes. Personally, i listen to all kinds of stuff, i have all the FATA albums, stuff like Killswitch, As I Lay Dying. Its important that you dont try and keep on comparing it to the other albums from FATA, i just mix all the songs up and listen to them randomly. I like the melodic stuff just as much as the heavy stuff. The drummer has his moments too which is one area that people dont agree on...
Autumns Monologue is a beautiful song also, with a female vocalist. Miligram smile is also really good. When you listen to songs by this band, try and just listen to From Autumn to Ashes in general, and not just the seperate albums, alot of the songs will appeal to you depending on what mood you are in too. So try it out, it may be less hardcore, but then they have always had there gentle and melodic times....
quickly forgotten.......2006-03-13
the first album was amazing, and i was looking forward to the release of this album. when i got it, i was disappointed. i don't think it begins to compare with 'too bad you're beautiful.' i have heard many bands of this style of music go from smaller labels to bigger ones, and they have done a much better job with keeping material consistent. i think the guitar line up changes are part of the reason, however it seems as if the songwriting on the whole isn't as well thought out. gone the dynamic, replaced by a more typical hardcore sound. had this been their only material, i don't think i would have pursued listening to from autumn to ashes.
freakin amazing.......2006-03-04
this band is freakin amazing, i have to tell you. i generally like any kind of music, but mostly rock, and this band definately stands out as scrumptulescent. they have some crazy melodic beats, along with perri's photonic screaming vocal style, mixed with mark's halfway screaming style. i would have to say that this band is one of the best things to come out of long island. bam bam bam. i hope you like the cd.
This cd is bad ass as hell.......2005-09-04
If you like metal, screemo, hxc or even punk you'll love this cd it has acoustic songs, metal songs, and even acoustic and metal riff's together it all is just bad asss you need to have this cd if you like any good music
<3.......2005-07-05
From Autumn to Ashes is what brought me to the hardcore scene.
This cd is what started it all. And now i just cant get enough. And they are really good live! This is my favorite band. I even like 'Autumn's Monologue' and 'The Fiction we Live'.

Dokken & Norum rock!.......2006-11-12
Every single song on this CD is excellent....how can you go wrong with Don Dokken's awesome vocals and John Norum's unbelievable guitar playing?! Excellent lyrics to the songs and just all around great music!
Don Dokken-The greatest!.......2006-07-21
This is the best solo effort that I have ever seen. This album reminds me of Dokken through and through, cachy choruses, shreading guitar solos, I mean what more can you ask for. If you remember Dokken in the 80's when they where at their best then you will totally love this album and for under 7.00 bucks what more could you ask for! This is definatly one of my top 5 cd's.
Well..........2006-07-15
I pause because I can't give this an affirmative "five stars" simply because the choruses are not really that accessible. The choruses are quite subdued, leaving a lesser opportunity for the tunes to be radio friendly. Still, the first four tracks are really pretty good from both an instrumental and a lyrical standpoint. The production level is awesome, too, which helps the overall sound a lot. There are no tracks like "Into the Fire" or "Dream Warriors" on here. Those are what we would call radio friendly tunes and it is quite ironic because even though both Don and George had ego clashes, which really was the nemesis of the bands breakup, they were both moving away from really commercial sounding records. Further, both found that success eluded them when on their own. This is a pretty good CD, though.
Another great DOKKEN album.......2006-02-09
Even though this is under the name Don Dokken I consider this a Dokken album. A melodic metal album with great guitar and vocals. Don put togethor a supergroup for this album with members of Europe, Accecpt and Motorhead. I actually consider Billy White better than John Norum! Billy isn't quite as good as Lynch but there are only a few guys in the history of rock music that were/are. Any way the added guitar harmonies are great and the solos are amazing. Don even plays some guitar on this album...something he hadn't done since Breaking The Chains. This is a great album and could have been under the name Dokken.
1.Crash 'N' Burn- 9/10 A great melodic song. The soft intro is great and it leads into an awesome fast melodic rocker. Don's vocals are very strong too. An excellent guitar solo by Billy White too. A great opener
2.1000 Miles Away- 10/10 Another great melodic song. Don Dokken's vocals and lyrics are very strong and the guitar part is excellent. Another great guitar solo too.
3.When Some Nights- 8/10 A good melodic song. The riff is good and Don's vocals are good aswell. A great guitar solo with some excellent harmonies.
4.Forever- 10/10 Another classic song. This sounds like classic Dokken. Don's vocals are great and so is the guitar riff. Another great harmony guitar solo by Billy White and John Norum. This song is also very melodic like the others.
5.Living a Lie- 9/10 A good poppy song. The riff is good and so is the chorus. More strong vocals from Don Dokken too. A great guitar solo too.
6.When Love Finds a Fool- 10/10 A great ballad. The music is beautiful and Don's voice is excellent. The chorus is great and the guitar sound is very good. Billy White's guitar solo is amazing and good enough to be one of Lynch's guitar solos. One of the best power ballads ever!
7.Give It Up- 10/10 Another great melodic song. The riff is great and the drum sound is excellent. Don's vocals are great as always and the chorus is good too. The shredding solo is great and sounds a lot like Lynch! Another classic.
8.Mirror Mirror- 10/10 Another classic! Don's vocals are excellent and the riff is great. The chorus is great too! Don's only "solo" hit and one of the best songs on the album. Great solos by Billy white and John Norum too! This has that classic Dokken sound.
9.Stay- 10/10 A great song that was going to be on the next Dokken album. This was written with Mick brown and the drums are great. The riff is great and Don's vocals are excellent. The chorus is great too. Another great guitar solo by Billy White.
10.Down in Flames- 10/10 A great intro which some excellent harmonies. A huge sound on this song too. Don's voice is excellent as always too. The riff is great too. A great chorus too. This sounds like it could have been on Under Lock And Key. Another great solo too. One of my favorites on the album.
11.The Hunger A great fast paced song with a good riff and excellent vocals. The chorus is excellent too. This sounds like classic Dokken too. The bridge is great and is my favorite part of the song. 2 amazing fast and melodic solos. These are solos that are up to George Lynch's standards!! A classic and my favorite song on the album!
The album is a must have for any dokken fans or melodic metal fans. This is more mellow than the past Dokken albums but still sounds like classic Dokken. Nothing really left to say execpt that this is a masterpeice!
Don Dokken- Lead Vocals, Guitar
Billy White- Lead Guitar
John Norum- Lead Guitar, Vocals
Mickey Dee- Drums, Percussion
Peter Baltes, Bass, Vocals
As good as (and, in some cases, SURPASSES) Dokken.......2005-12-12
I am a longtime Dokken fan, and I was heartbroken when they disbanded in 1988-9 when Don and George just could not work out a reconciliation.
When this was first released, I admit I wondered how Don would do as a solo artist. This is quite a band assembled here - guitarist John Norum from Europe (careful observers will note that John Norum teamed up with Don Dokken again on the Dokken CD LONG WAY HOME), bassist Peter Baltes from Accept, drummer Mikkey Dee (a stint with King Diamond) and a great guitarist named Billy White. LOADS of talent here. This release totally exceeded my expectations - an all-around great release with no "fillers".
This CD kicks off with Crash 'N' Burn - one of my favorite songs of all time. A fast-paced song with a fantastic guitar solo. I'd rate this one a 10 - Don's vocals are great, and Dee / Baltes make for a fine rhythm section.
I love Don's vocals on 1000 Miles Away and When Love Finds a Fool. The latter features a sad-sounding acoutstic intro, and these songs touch upon the familiar Dokken-esque theme of being wronged by the ol' femme-fatale. Almost like "Alone Again" from TOOTH AND NAIL. Don Dokken can sing and croon with the best of rock's vocalists. "Stay" and "Down In Flames" are lyrically similar to the femme-fatale but those songs are more pop-metal than power ballads - cool stuff.
"Give It Up" is a song similar in theme to "Will The Sun Rise" from UNDER LOCK AND KEY. Kind of the same anti-war lyrics in each track. "Mirror Mirror" was a single released from this - that mid-tempo rocker is probably the most commercial friendly song from this recording.
I LOVE Peter Baltes' bass playing on "Forever" and "When Love Finds a Fool". And the song "The Hunger" is just an all-out rocker (as is Crash N Burn) with some great drumming exhibited. I think Ken Mary is actually the drumer for that last track - listen to his work on CD's released by Gregg Guiffria's band HOUSE OF LORDS - that is some excellent skin-bashing too.
This release stands up to probably EVERYTHING Dokken recorded. For only $7, just buy it new. It's got something for everyone and is one of my favorites.

If ur looking for a long review look somewhere else cuz this is gonna be short. Buy this album its insanely fast and has great lyrics and a DVD. This is the only band i know of that makes me unable to do anything else while listening to them. Their that fast. Anyways im gonna see em live on the 19th should be awesome. laterz!
very good, nowhere near as good as about time or land of the free? though.......2006-07-15
over the past few weeks, i had been trying to weed out non-essential albums from my cd collection and this one had crossed my path several times and i have finally decided that this one is a phenomenal listen for PW fans...while yes, this may be one of the ones that i like lesser than albums like unknown road, about time, straight ahead, land of the free, and the fuse, this one is definately on par with, if not better than the overrated "self-titled" and "full circle" albums. the fuse and straight ahead are better than this, but not by much...my top 3 PW albums are always going to be about time, the fuse, and land of the free though!(well, until a new one pops up!)
i agree with a previous reviewer..pennywise are still a fresh band making fresh music..despite it sounding similar on occasion...can't wait for their next album!
i can only dream what this band would be like if jason was still alive.
Of all the Pennywise albums.. this one is the BEST!.......2006-03-26
Read the above title... I have all of Pennywise's music. I knew the new album "The Fuse" wouldn't top this one, but that's a good album, too (although it had to grow on me some.) Every track on this CD is killer! If I had to choose my least fav track it would be the very first one, but that one is still good, just not my fav compared to all the rest of them. Pennywise along with Bad Religion are my favorite US punk bands. In the UK, The Exploited are king in my book, going by the last 2 albums... the older ones I don't care for not nearly as much...
Not oLd-sChOoL pUnK rOck, but it's still pretty fresh!.......2006-01-15
So my friend bought this CD one day at the mall...and my broke ass had to borrow it and burn it. I love the whole CD. Kudos Pennywise, kudos.
This is the best in the series.......2005-12-30
So many bad reviews for a pretty good album???I think this album is the best by them. All the songs are catchy & i mean it all the songs. Many of their albums take atleast a few listens to get inside the head(including their new album Fuse)but this album is an exception.Standout tracks are 1,2,3,6,8,9,10,11,12.These guys are the best punk rock bands out there today.I hope Pennywise keeps on making good music.

YEP.......2006-06-02
First off avenged sevenfold had two amazing albums that destroy anything this band has ever put out before they came out with city of evil and sold out to the mainstream...but in either direction FATA is a ok band and this is a ok cd so go check it out if your into that sort of thing.... or look at a real band like the agony scene if u want good hardcore.
ugh.......2006-04-19
Let me start off by saying that I absolutely fell in love with TBYB and have listened to it for months straight. It was just that amazing, That being said, I have a few comments on this album.
Yes I understand the viewpoint that they've matured and that's great and all. I just want to know, what the heck is the drummer doing singing half the songs that the lead singer should be singing? I mean, sure his voice is nice if you like the kinda whiny-esque thing, but seriously.
What made FATA them was their creativity and interesting components. The main thing this applied to was their singing, when Ben would sing and Francis would do some background singing. that added dimension to the songs and it was perfect that way. I don't understand why they would completely cut each other off from their (own) songs and I just think it's ridiculous. Yes, I am talking about how Ben seems to have his own songs and Francis his own.
I won't say that I don't think they've grown a bit, but personally, this album just felt really weak to me. TBYB had a lot of beautiful heartfelt lyrics and this had subpar lyrics that felt more or less generic rather than personal.
Musically, creativity has nearly died and withered away. It bothers me that they have so much potential and they're not using it. Vocally, I know that if they just collaborated and made their songs less commercial they could've done ok.
And right now, I'm being extremely nice in this review. The album was bland and weak in most aspects, but I understand their whole situation with losing members and all. I just hope they can clean up their act for their next album... hopefully I won't be as disappointed
Much improved!!.......2006-04-04
First off, I've known FATA for a while but they haven't really interested me... until now. I really like this album. Normally I would've given it 4 stars but because they sound so much more mature and focused on this album I'm gonna go ahead and give it a 5.
People that say this CD isn't hardcore and naming off other "hardcore" bands are really naming metal and noise (Yes, that's a genre. Look it up!!). That is just downright ignorant and uninformed and I'm not even gonna comment on that.
These guys definitely DID NOT sell out. They're still on Vagrant which is an independent label the last time I checked. You want sell-outs, look at EVERY SINGLE metal band. Avenged retardo Sevenfold, which is on Warner (major label), is absolutely horrible. These morons can't even scream! (Their label won't let them, haha!!) If you're on a major label you can't write the kind of song that's in your heart you have to write something that'll sell records. Independent labels don't care. And that's why From Autumn to Ashes is a REAL BAND writing REAL MUSIC.
The bottom line is... if you like emotionally powerful music written from the heart (you know, good music) you're gonna like this album. Just buy it. If you're into nice ballads with beautiful melodies, this record's got you covered with "Placentapede"(my personal favorite, the outro is freakin awesome!), "Streamline", "Abandon Your Friends" among others. If you like furious angercore check out "Where Do You Draw the Line?", "Vicious Cockfight", "Jack and Ginger" and "Short for Show". If you like disgusting, make-me-want-to-puke metal please look elsewhere. There's none of that garbage on this recording.
EDIT: It's true previous FATA albums had more meaningful lyrics and the comradery shown when Ben and Francis both sing in the same song is definitely inspiring but I'm sorry to say that Too Bad You're Beautiful (TBYB) and Fiction We Live (FWL) are subpar albums. It's not that they don't have some good stuff there (I have the albums and I like them but they're burned, not originals) but they weren't worth my hard-earned money.
Jiyoung, I can tell you WERE being nice in your review and I'm trying to be too. Here's what I think...
For me one of the standout tracks on TBYB is Reflections (track 8). Although I absolutely love the guitar solo and about 2 min in the middle of the track the remaining 4 min of the song is really just random noise. Most of the album seem to have this "randomness" instead of actual structured songs. And that is why I prefer Abandon Your Friends. That's not to say that ALL of FATA's older stuff is like this. I really like Lilacs and Lolita, Milligram Smile, Autumn's Monologue and Fiction We Live off of FWL, of course. And that's not to mention After Dinner Payback which is one of my favorite tracks ever!! But when you consider that is 5 out of 10 tracks that's not worth buying. Sorry.
This is a great cd........2006-01-24
Wow first off comparing this band to Avengend Sevenfold. No way they sound way better. A7X sounds like mainstream. Francis mark's voice is amazing. The slow songs are great. I love the old alubms just as much as the new ones. Its good when a band can be creative and focous on different styles. Every song on this cd is absloutely amazing. The lyrics are great as well. As far as it goes for the haters. I would like to see any of you putting down this record put one out and do as well as FATA. I don't think that would happen.
shut up .......2006-01-12
Shut up everyone who doesnt like it cause its "emo" you want hardcore go put on your sisters pants and get your ass kicked at a show. This cd is so good. I loved the last one but i think this one blows it away. So shut up changing your sound does not mean uve sold out. And they barely changed theyve sounded like this for a while.

Given that John Williams has his pick of much of the $80-million, thrill-packed boilerplate that comes clanging out of Hollywood every summer and fall, it's especially noteworthy (and often gratifying) when he doesn't exercise his option. In scoring Alan Parker's adaptation of Frank McCourt's Pulitzer-winning memoirs of his dire Irish upbringing in the 1930s and '40s, Williams has produced a graceful, autumnal work of compelling, though decidedly delicate, emotional power. Using spare piano and solo woodwind melodies filled with longing eloquence, Williams effectively punctuates a sweeping, largely string and wind ensemble. As he did to great effect in The Phantom Menace, the veteran leans heavily on his classical moonlighting duties for inspiration. Interspersed throughout (and also effectively underscored by his music) are concise, telling excerpts of the film's narration read by Alan Bennett. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
I'm sorry but I have to say..........2004-10-04
...that this album is just not a masterpiece. I couldn't help reacting something to all those comments that praise Williams to the skies. Not that I hate him. No. This music is simply overrated. The themes are repetative, the whole scorewriting approach is dull, seems uninspired. James N. Howard or Thomas Newman could have been the ones to be invited to write a music for this movie. John Williams' style of writing seems to be out of date sometimes. This music sounds like as if it had been composed decades ago. You won't possibly be thrilled by the sheer beauty of this score. It simply has almost none.
Unwanted words.......2002-09-27
Although the music is very nice, the excerpts of the story ruins the beautiful music composed by John Williams. If it wasn't for that, this would be a 4 or 5 star album. At least there's one track without the story being told, and that's the only track I ever listen to.
Wonderful soundtrack befitting the book!.......2002-09-04
The movie was good, but surprisingly it is the motion picture soundtrack which actually better serves the wonderful novel from which it was spawned. Moody, emotional and a pleasure to hear.
Voice-Over Ruins the CD..........2002-02-01
When I saw Angela's Ashes in the Theater a few years ago, I was so taken with John Williams' beautiful score that I rushed right out and bought the Soundtrack CD. I was VERY disappointed to find that about 80% of the Score is drowned out by the over-dubbing of dialogue from the film. If I wanted to hear film dialogue, I would get the DVD and play that. It's too bad that Mr. Williams' lovely music is forced to play second fiddle to an actor playing Frank McCourt, and the CD packaging says NOTHING about every track having a monologue over the music. (There is an import version of the CD that omits the annoying voice-over, but that didn't do me any good......I had already bought this version.)
A Fine John Williams' Score For An Irish Film.......2001-12-30
Thematically, John Williams' score for "Angela's Ashes" is more akin to his music for "Schindler's List" than for any of the "Star Wars" films. Unfortunately, it isn't nearly as lyrical nor as well performed as the "Schindler's List" score. Still it is replete with the excellent melodies and harmonies you'd expect from John Williams' music, most notably in the track "The Lanes Of Limerick". I wish this CD was released without the voice over narration read by an English actor pretending to be the adult Frank McCourt; I found that a bit distracting while listening to Williams' music. If the narration was absent, I might have enjoyed Williams' music more.

Unspoiled.......2007-01-02
We've heard it over and over again. This is what FATA used to sound like and it is much better. Sin and Sorrow, Too bad you're beautiful is pre- sell out. Their later stuff is great too, but just like Underoath or many other bands, their old stuff rocks much better. If you jumped on the bandwagon like most with "the afterdinner payback" then maybe you should just stick with Their later cd's, but if you truely appreciate their unique sound then their earlier stuff is great. It's a bit less, how do we say, radioish.
MMmm..........2006-06-30
Not completely horrible, but doesnt seem as well put together as The Fiction We Live. It seems that there is a huge lack of rythm in this one. It feels as thought they tried to do too much on this...
without a doubt the best of the band.......2006-03-13
although i have the original version (without the ep material) i have heard the ep material and it is certainly a bonus to an already great album. i have trouble listening to the 'fiction we live' in its entirety, and have no intention of buying 'abandon your friends' from the few songs i've heard from it. without this album, i don't think from autumn to ashes would have become as big as they have. while it's the same drummer and vocalist, the guitar line up has changed significantly, and the newer line ups don't compare. this album alone, however, makes this band memorable. although it was recorded on a much lower budget compared to fata's other albums, i enjoy the production much more on this one - there's never a feeling of a cheap recording on this album, yet there's certainly never a moment of over-production. the fiction we live sounded too processed, and the following album i will not comment on. the songs are very dynamic, shifting from breakdowns to very slowed paced, mellow acoustic passages, incorpating a lot of melody throughout the calm and the heavy. i have listened to this album countless times, and while it may not be the best of its style it is a great listen.
An original and hardcore classic.......2005-08-01
This album should be in your collection if you like any kind of metal or any kind of core. This CD has a mind of it's own. There's a lot of turns and twists that will have you wandering what's going on in this guys mind who's writing the music. The guitar work is close to phenominal and I was impressed by the transitions from fast thrash hardcore to slow bass and piano interludes. It's also lyrically advanced bringing some original ideas to the whole "emo" table.
And now for the bad parts...my complaints
The drumming is mediocre at best, but the guitars back it up well
The vocals are good for screamo standards and they do scream well. The singing however, is pretty bad. It sounds like a bulemic geek crying...
The whole album is really hard to get into. At first 5 listens it sounds all the same, and it takes time to start to really see the depth.
other than that this is a great album that manages to break genre labels by making itself hard to place a label on. It manages to be a lot of things at once while still holding a good bit of punch.
one of the best if not the best metalcore emocore whatever cds ever........2005-07-08
this cd willblow you away every single second it is playing. the guitar is so amazing so far beyond most any other band in this genre, the riffs the melodies display so much talent and great song writing. then thers the drums not only can this guy sing but he is an amazing drummer just listen to him play and you will see what im talking about. this cd in my point f view sets the standard for any other band out there. as for their newest cd sure it was a lot more simplisit cmost of the time and had a lot more clean singing and the first time i heard it i didnt like it, know that the first song i heard from this and was after dinner payback but i got tbyb before i got their new one, but it grew on me and i think its a pretty good cd not as groundbreaking jawdropping awesome as this. anyway if you like any type of heavy music whatsoever you should definately pick this up immediately and be prepared to get your mind blown.

I wish XM had been around 5 years ago when the first Stone Coyotes album came out because then I wouldn't have needed to wait five years to find this band.
Better late than never.
For all you rockers out there. This is the band. This is the band that ought fill the void of great American rock band that Aerosmith had, Guns n' Roses inherited and nobody has grabbed since.

if you are, like me, an aspiring girl guitarist and singer.....GET THIS ALBUM....GET ALL THE ALBUMS BY THE STONE COYOTES.....inspiration to no end...
Ignore the bad review, don't ignore this album.......2004-01-10
I think that The Stone Coyotes are a band you either get, or don't. Part of that might have to do with whether or not one is willing to "rock" - i know that sounds cliche in a jaded time but there was something compelling in early rock and roll that made it stick around and The Stone Coyotes one of the only bands today that has that "put the world on edge and both make you move and move you" feel to their music.
Pay no mind to the one negative review here....go to the band's website, listen to some sound samples, and find out what a whole lot of people know - that this is an artist that has gained a huge underground following for a reason.
Barbara Keith's songs are songwriting as it ought to be - not the wimpy, woe is me, autobiographical drivel that comes out of everybody's mouth these days (as if we want to hear another tale of sitting at a bar with your face in a beer) but songs with stories, like Johnny Cash once wrote before he started doing nothing but cover tunes (I'm sorry, rest his soul). These are songs that get at the heart of the world. You will not be disappointed.

New Death Metal Heavyweights.......2006-11-27
This band was an unexpected surprise for me- I actually have enjoyed the first album from this new, osbcure death metal band more than some of the latest high-profile metal releases.
Abysmal Dawn deliver a solid platter of meat-and-potatoes death metal, just the way I like it- nice, heavy dirge riffs and speedy tremolo-picking, with enough complexity and cool time changes to make it interesting, old-school cookie monster vocals, and some standout drumming. The only thing slightly detracting from this release is it's rather short playtime, clocking in at just over 30 minutes. Even so, this is what death metal is supposed to sound like- definately recommended. This and the latest Suffocation album have been my favorite death metal discs lately, and I would like to hear more from this band in the future.
Amazing Debut.......2006-04-28
Blistering Modern Death Metal. The production isn't so over the top that it doesnt even sound like humans performed the music, but not underproduced either. Abysmal Dawn offers up an impressive debut with From Ashes. I expect nothing but big things to come from this band.

Solid blackened death metal debut.......2006-04-19
Abysmal Dawn was formed in 2003 after Charles Elliott decided to leave his former band Rise. Elliott regrouped with Jamie Boulanger, his friend from an older band of his. With the addition of Terry Barajas and session bassist Mike Bear, the lineup was complete, so the band started working on writing songs. After a successful demo in 2004, here is their debut album, From Ashes.
From Ashes is blackened death metal with scorching vocals and god-heavy guitar work, and thundering rhythm parts. Elliot is not only an exceptional guitar player, but he is also a very aggressive singer - a perfect fit for old school US death metal. His growling is deep and pain-ridden, but he will also opt for black shrieks on tracks like "In the Hands of Death", a song with speedy riffs and hammering drum work. Towards the end of the track, Elliott shifts from low growls to shrieked black screams lending it an old-school black metal vibe. The guitar tandem of Abysmal Dawn is tight and blessed with chops to boot. The fast chord progressions on "Blacken the Sky" suggest a progressive outlook in their songwriting vision. Barjas' cymbal work crashes loudly, as Jamie Boulanger lays down a punishing guitar solo, with stop-start bass and drum attacks interspersed in between. The band's thrashy roots come through on "Servants to Their Knees" and "Wicked Impulse", the former featuring minor pace changes and Egyptian scales, while the latter is filled with an Alex Skolnick type of neoclassical run that really heightens the song's scope. A similar solo is offered on "Solitude's Demise", also introducing a more straightforward vocal style by Elliott. The brief yet effective "State of Mind" displays the band's atmospheric side with painful growls that we'd normally hear on funeral doom bands' albums, but it's the guitar work that constitutes Abysmal Dawn's strongest aspect. At only 31 minutes, the album is packed with some of the most fluid, well-composed, and violent riffs, licks and solos you'll hear. Add to this Elliott's strong vocals and a challenging rhythmic angle, and there you have it: From Ashes.
The album was engineered by John Haddad (Eyes of Fire) and its artwork was done by Par Olofsson known for his works with Deeds of Flesh and Psycroptic. The production is solid and the mix serves its purpose. With all of this considered, it's safe to say Abysmal Dawn have made a good start.

One of the great joys of watching young bands mature is the way that they work through their influences to develop their own sound. But what of those groups that wear their influences on their sleeve? Oranger, for instance, makes no bones about digging the Zombies, Who, T. Rex, and the Beach Boys a whole lot, since they cop the sounds of those bands all over the place. But ironically, the more this San Francisco-based quartet has just given in to their inner pop demons and stopped trying to be too original or hard-rocking, they've become far more interesting. Where their previous records were merely interesting, with Shutdown, Oranger finally delivers a textured, expertly-crafted, and moody classic of contemporary, `60s-inspired indie-rock. The first pressing of the album comes with a fully-loaded extra CD of rarities going back to 1998. Fans of Beulah, Superchunk, Elf Power, and Spoon are sure to dig this album. --Mike McGonigal

"Ashes" of the "Sun".......2005-07-10
San Francisco quartet Oranger is one of those gloriously offbeat indierock bands, which deserves to be well known, yet somehow isn't. And their third album, "Shutdown the Sun," is an indie masterpiece that goes quietly under the radar, yet is unforgettable when you've heard it.
Oranger slowly builds up to a sweet, bluesy guitar song, which slowly gets wrapped in layers of ethereal keyboard. Some songs, like "Going Under" or the sizzly short "Just A Little Dumb" are made up of dense, danceable fuzz-rock. But with some other songs, there's a more delicate, psychedelic sound. Think the Flaming Lips' earlier work
This is the disc that really hooks you into the Oranger sound -- these four guys have a knack for making 60s-inspired rock'n'roll. They have a little punk, a little psychedelica, and a lot of gritty fuzzy stuff, and their songs are wound tightly enough that it's hard to find individual flaws and weaknesses.
But once the windy rock of "Delivered By Compass" is over, switch discs. There's also a sprawling second CD, "From the Ashes of Electric Elves," packed with rarities, live songs, B-sides and previously unreleased recordings. It's not as tight or rich as "Shutdown the Sun," but its swoony psychpop, catchy pop numbers and angular experimental songs are even more fun.
Sometimes they are great songs, and sometimes the guys just sound like they're messing around. It lacks the moodiness of the first disc. Instead, we have the goofy alien-rock "Space Colony Boogie" and "The Rover," psych-punk "Bleeding Kneecaps," sparkling "Pleschette Gun," and an instrumental goof-off at the finale, "Twenty-Three Skiddoo Takes 1-6."
Although "From the Ashes of Electric Elves" could easily stand as an album on its own, it was wisely paired with a more polished, conventional CD. While both discs are excellent, and show off Oranger at their best, they also show different facets of the rock group's sound -- "Ashes" is more experimental, eclectic and funny, while "Shutdown" is richly dense and steady.
Mike Drake has a nice voice, very drawly and able to stand above the music. He also does some wonderfully low-key work on the guitar, backed by Matt Harris's solid bass, Jim Linday's sharp drums, and Patrick Main's outstanding keybards. They all do exceptional work, and different songs allow them to shine.
Oranger make the best album of their career thus far (a new album will be out in the fall) in "Shutdown the Sun," and pair this glorious album with an equally worthy rarities collection. A must-have.
Better Than You.......2004-05-25
Smart, big guitar, super pop. Disc one is the quiet "studio album", disc two is misc. b-sides and rarities (including punk gem "Bleeding Kneecaps"). Overall more good songs than most bands ever write. The Who, Beach Boys (not in the usual lame sense), The Minders, The Kinks and Overwhelming Colorfast all come to mind. Why aren't these guys on everybody's top ten list. Can't wait to see what they do next.
Stunning.......2004-03-04
Mike Drake is an amazing songwriter, and this is his crowning achievement. While the first two Oranger records had good songs and sometimes excellent arrangements, they were often overburdened with the sounds of the band's influences. Here, however, they are at home with their own sound, and the playing reinforces the songs rather than competes with them. Not a weak song on the first disk, & the bonus disk will blow you away.
Fine Brian Wilson-styled Pop.......2003-10-31
Pop Kulcher Review: Oranger is a fine but still relatively unknown San Francisco-area pop band that is steadily evolving from their more jagged earlier work to a smooth, polished (but still entertaining) sound. Earlier work by the band came on like a cross between mid-60's Who and the Flaming Lips (with a dose of XTC thrown into the mix), acidic power pop that was catchy if not always approachable. The latest album, though, shows a full-fledged dive into Brian Wilson territory, much more relaxed and textured. So there are fewer in-your-face spectacular moments than prior albums, but overall it's a much more consistent album. This fits in comfortably alongside other neo-pop bands like Apples in Stereo and Beulah, and it's pretty tough not to like. Even better is the "bonus" cd of b-sides and rarities appended to the package. The 34 bonus tracks run the gamut from short, instrumental soundtrack-type throwaways to near-perfect pop singles. The bonus disc may be limited, so if you pick this up make sure you're getting the 2-cd version. Even with the filler tracks, it's the second disc that makes this a killer purchase.
