5 out of 5 stars Killer thrash metal around Viking themes.......2007-05-28

Not as good as "Hammerheart" by a long shot, but still very, very good. This was my first purchase from Bathory and I was impressed on the first listen. Bathory has their roots in Black Metal and some of that comes out on this record. But, this one is also the first of a trilogy of Viking-themed recordings including "Hammerheart" and "Twilight of the Gods." I was so impressed with what I've heard on this record and "Hammerheart" that I immediately ordered five of Bathory's other albums.

Read an interview with Quorthon in "Lucifer Rising" Gavin BaddeLey's book..He said he was inspired by Comics since he was too young for sex..I found this so sweet that I give him a five on one of his albums and say, hey it's a shame that you had a heart attack at 39. May you live..I will review a little more at a time when I have a fuller knowledge of the wonders of Bathory.Make sure to buy thE tribute cd..

5 out of 5 stars Ageless Piece of Metal.......2006-02-25

I am 32 old years now, and I remember I hear this album for the first time when I was in high school... I can tell you I have not stopped listening 'til now. This is the best Black Metal Album so far. The atmosphere is unbelievable from the first intro and the classic anthem A FINE DAY TO DIE, then the records takes you to a journey of speed, really fantastic, a lesson on how to play fast and heavy but with endless variants, special mention to GOLDEN WALLS OF HEAVEN amd PACE TIL DEATH that will make you sweat just by listening... and the journey ends with another masterpiece of melancholic roughness with BLOOD FIRE DEATH that ends as the record begins, so by the time it ends, you start feeling addicted to speed and will push play again and again and again. The album is consistent and intense, hard to pick just one song, definitely you have to listen the journey from the beginning to the end every time you play it.

Album Description

Much like the first record, this album was founded in a situation of self-imposed isolation, with the band operating in states of little or no sleep, varying levels of intoxication, and physical confinement.

5 out of 5 stars Random humans scuffling about........2007-06-24

I purchased "Telegraphs in Negative" and "Sings Reign" together.

Being from the 'post-rock' genre and having members from GYBE, I had very little fear that this would be a bad purchase. And I was right.

As I describe in my review of "Sings Reign", it's haunting, calming and inspiring... and to be perfectly honest I would probably rate these albums higher than most Godspeed albums (as well as Mogwai, ASMZ, etc) This record I don't like QUITE as much as "Sings Reign", but only by a narrow margin. This is a double disc album, providing 90 minutes of nightmarish dreamscapes... it is even MORE experimental than "Sings Reign" (the addition of more random human scuffling about) and you can almost sense how much more the band members are strung out or intoxicated or whatever. (If you read a blurb about these records, it is stated that they isolated themselves in remote locations with very little contact with the outside world and would stay awake for long periods of time)

In any case, I find both of Fire to Flames' records to be amazing bodies of work. Granted it is not the type of music for everyone. But whether listening to it intensely or just playing in the background... I think it will have a lasting effect on you.

A great addition for any ambient/experimental/post-rock collection.

5 out of 5 stars hidden from uncrushed habits.......2006-08-08

your indie-suppressing derision wafts tragic like breeze through bombed out ruins. jump here while you can. it's nothing like that it's something completely different and unique and disgusting and beautiful. you can eat it with a spoon, but you would choose not to.

4 out of 5 stars ..........2004-09-09

The title aforementioned is the feeling I got from this album...emptiness. A reviewer on a UK site put it very aptly by saying this album is "all your beautiful memories and loves washed up in front of you only to wash away forever," or something like that. This album will drain you if you let it. On first listen you might not know what to think, because there simply isn't that much "music" on here. No real movements. Some songs are a single movement, some are nothing at all really.

So what is it exactly? Well...I'm not really sure. I kind of wanted to know what this collective group (comprised of members of hangedup, godspeed, fly pan am, and someothers(?)) was thinking while making this, or how they did it exactly. They do play things, but it barely has any form, but it's still cooridinated, which is really almost paradoxical. The tracks are very rarely sweet and are usually the worst/confusing/vacuous parts of your life put into musical form. It's almost like the imagery in a silent hill game but for your ears, which if you know what I'm talking about this is quite a thing to experience.

However, this is actually a very difficult album to listen to. One that you literally HAVE to grow accustomed to, because you probably won't really like it that much. I didn't. But after a second listen I was starting to GET it, and when you finally start to get it everything seems to have a bit more of a place. This is by no means a godspeed record, it's nothing close to that. I've heard comparisons drawn to f#a# but this is much more subtle and ambient. But I do feel like f#a# had much more of a purpose, because it does have movements and crescendos. But at the same time this emptiness is what is so attractive about these apparent telegraphs in negative.

On a side note, this cd has some of the coolest packaging I've ever seen. It's almost worth buying the album for this reason alone, I really mean it. It's damn haunting, and as esoteric as you can get. And naturally the track names put question marks in your head. Oh, and don't buy this from fatcat (record co.) if you're not in UK, it's damn expensive.

4 out of 5 stars Not typical Irish Punk Music.......2006-11-14

I am a big Dropkick Murphys fan. So, I was excecting something along those lines. Though, I do like Black 47 they are nothing like Dropkick. They remind me more of the eirly eighties bands.

5 out of 5 stars Their most original, and the best starting point.......2006-09-19

All of Black 47's albums have their strong points, but Fire of Freedom has nothing but strong points. There aren't very many albums I've heard by any artist that sound terrific on the very first listen and stay that way for good. But this is one - from the day I bought it in 1993 (on cassette - remember those?!), every song was catchy and memorable in its own way then and still is now.

If I had to settle on one genre for Black 47, "Irish rock" would have to do. But that's a massive oversimplification, and these guys sound absolutely nothing like U2 or The Pogues. What do they sound like? A mishmash of funk, folk, punk, hip-hop, soul, reggae and straight up rock and roll that almost had to be either horrible or wonderful. Luckily for us, it's the latter. The band's unabashedly militant politics turn up in several of the songs, notably "James Connolly," the title track, and the rather enigmatic "Fanatic Heart." They're also not above co-opting old ballads with new words of their own in "40 Shades of Blue" and "Livin' In America" (set to supercharged arrangements of "Down By The Sally Gardens" and "The Foggy Dew" respectively); folk purists might not like these too much, but they're among my favorites. Most of the others are slice-of-life tales of the modern immigrant experience in various corners of New York, ranging from tragic to hilarious.

Nothing beats seeing these guys live, but this CD is a close runner-up to that.

5 out of 5 stars Power and Passion.......2004-03-05

This is one of the decade's best albums. Every track is memorable, though "James Connolly" and "Fire of Freedom" are the ones that stick with me long after the music stops. This is Black 47 at the top of their game (or at least as good as they get in the studio: Nothing beats them live). A mixture of straight-on rock 'n' roll, with Celtic flavors on some tracks, and reggae beats or hip-hop thrown in occasionally. The musicianship here is incredible at times; the horn section blends with the pipes for some truly inspired sounds.

Look for a CD put out in 1995, called "Keep it Reel," with Seanchai (Chris Byrne from Black 47), Eileen Ivers, and Pat McGuire. Absolutely awesome live recording of Irish hip-hop, and several other genres fused together, with brilliant lyrics by Seanchai. Hard to find.

4 out of 5 stars A new breed of celtic-style music.......2001-01-15

This album is a little tougher than one might expect from a celtic band. While you can't divorce the celtic influence it is definitely supported by an American twist.

This cd is fun as in the exuberant "Funky Ceili" (a great song, great story, in neo-celtic style,) "40 Shades of Blue" or "Rockin' the Bronx". More often however there is an edgy darkness here whether in detailing Irish history ("James Connolly" or "Black 47") or in the contemporary ("Banks of the Hudson"). Don't expect the Irish Tenors here or even the Chieftains. The beauty of those artists aren't here (although the artistry is). This is more thought-provoking, more raw, more contemporary (lyrically and vocally).

5 out of 5 stars Paddy's Got a Brand New Reel.......2001-01-11

Larry Kirwan writes theatrical music both literally and figuratively. Sometimes the epic nature of the music comes close to bombast, sometimes the drama veers toward melodramatic, and sometimes his melodic reach exceeds his vocal grasp.

But what songs.

My criterion for 5 stars is that every track has to be memorable. This disk nails it. One is tempted to go track by track to describe the music. As others have indicated, this is a band with disparate roots and influences; its central tendency sounds something like what might have happened if Springsteen grew up in Wexford listening to traditional Irish music instead of R&R and R&B. Like Springsteen at his best, not everything is pedal-to-the-metal; Black 47's music encompasses a range of subject matter and emotion, but with a perspective rooted in Kirwan's immigrant alienation and political interests. "Banks of the Hudson" is what might happen if a traditional murder ballad crashed into Manhattan complete with Geoff Blythe doing his best Clarence Clemmons imitation; "Funky Ceili" is a joyful celebration of dissoluteness; "James Connolly" an anthemic celebration of the Irish Marxist revolutionary; the quiet "Fanatic Heart" is both plaintive and chilling; and "Living in America" is the band's piece de resistance -- an evocation of the slights and hopes of immigrant men and women in America. Like I said it is tempting to review each track.

It would be easy to fall flat on your face trying to pull this off -- the politics degenerating into sloganeering, the passion into cheap sentimentality, and the music into some kind of ersatz folk hydrid. Kirman's self-deprecating humor (I once saw him perform a song about his girlfriend leaving him "for another woman" while he was with the Major Thinkers, an earlier band) saves him lyrically, and relentless live performance has honed the band musically.

As a final note: "Fire of Freedom" is not Black 47's first CD. The band put out an eponymous CD two years earlier. Many of the songs are the same as "Fire of Freedom" though there are four that are not on subsequent disks. The production is more spare, and I actually prefer some of the performances to the more cluttered productions on "Fire of Freedom." If you like "Fire of Freedom" and you come across "Black 47", it could be worthwhile picking it up.

Massive power trio HIGH ON FIRE are a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume. Equal parts molten metal and earthquake panic, HIGH ON FIRE's MOTORHEAD-meets-SLAYER roar is outrageously loud and absolutely punishing. With Blessed Black Wings, guitarist / vocalist Matt Pike (ex-SLEEP) unleashes a devastating combination of bombastic guitar and howling war cries, weaving fantastical tales of supernatural beasts, forgotten battles and rivers of blood over an unstoppable bass and drum assault. HIGH ON FIRE are a class unto themselves, manhandling rock music while locking into grooves that transcend time.

5 out of 5 stars The Stoned Riffs of Matt Pike-Brother In The Wind........2007-04-02

Matt Pike is defintely a Brother In The Wind. I love that tune. Self Defense was great, Surrounded By Thieves an instant classic, and Black Wings here has got to be one the greatest metal albums ever made. Stoner metal, rock, doom, whatever tag you wish to place on this, these songs will live on forever ... at least in my heart. I can't name one song on this that I don't think is killer beyond belief. Devilution will open the set and prepare you for what's to come. Brother In The Wind will send chills down your spine, and by the time you get to the monster sound on Sons of Thunder, you will be a believer. Hail High On Fire. Bring on the next one Matt!!!!!!!

It's probably High on Fire's most accessible album to date, mostly because it is their most up-tempo and it has the best production. Great songs, great tones, great band.

5 out of 5 stars a cross between Motorhead and Slayer.......2006-12-16

High On Fire's vocalist Matt Pike sounds like a cross between Tom Araya of Slayer and Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead. as a matter of fact, their music sounds like a battle of the bands between Motorhead and Slayer. the DVD that is included with this album is a nice touch. on it, you get to see the band in action. I would love to see a new album from this band sometime soon.

5 out of 5 stars Kataklysm can kick all other metal bands butts.......2007-03-21

There is not really another band out there that I can compare Kataklysm to. Very fast, but not to the point where it doesn't sound like music. Same with the drums, very fast but not to the point that it sounds like a bunch of marbles falling on a drum. A must check out for any metal head. Best song in my opinion is "Blood on the Swans".

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best to offer.......2006-08-08

In one word this album is sick! I played this album to some friends who had once abandoned these guys. They quickly perked up to the searing riffs, killer drum beats and demonic vocals of this "diamond in the rough" death metal band. This album made me truly appreciate what is good in the dark genre. All the songs in this CD make for a grand tour de force of brutality. The self titled "Serenity in Fire" remains my personal favorite. A tour through the pits of oblivion should not be complete without this album playing in the background!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brutal and In Your Face!!.......2006-06-28

I recently got into Kataklysm over a month ago when I bought "Serenity in Fire", and I have to say, this is some of the most brutal and in your face death metal I've heard in my life. This album just crushes and destroys absolutely everything in it's path. The musicianship on here is absolutely awesome. Brutal vocals, angry guitars, and ohhhh man those sick insane machine-gun-like drums. Maurizio Iacono's vocals are very awesome ranging from brutal growls to frightening screams. Guitarist J-F Daginais shreds and tears throughout with angry crushing riffs that rips through your bones like a buzzsaw. Stephane Barbe has some good bass lines you can hear as well. Drummer Martin Maurais absolutely slaughters on this album. His machine-gun-like double bass drumming is absolutely sick and insane. If you don't believe me, just listen to the drum solo on track seven "Blood on the Swans". It will have you feeling like you've been hit by a semi truck, just totally awesome!! Other standouts include "The Ambassador of Pain", "For All Our Sins" (which features guest vocals by Peter Tagtgren of Hypocrisy), "10 Seconds From The End", "The Resurrected", "Serenity in Fire", and "Under the Bleeding Sun".
Jeremy's song ratings:
1. The Ambassador of Pain - Great opener. 5/5
2. The Resurrected - 5/5
3. As I Slither - 5/5
4. For All Our Sins - 5/5
5. The Night They Returned - 5/5
6. Serenity in Fire - 5/5
7. Blood on the Swans - Love that drum solo in the begining. 5/5
8. 10 Seconds From The End - 5/5
9. The Tragedy I Preach - 5/5
10. Under the Bleeding Sun - Great closer, has a nice guitar solo BTW. 5/5

Overall highly recommended for fans of Vader, Deicide, Cryptopsy, Nile, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Hate Eternal, Cannibal Corpse, Malevolent Creation or even Hypocrisy, At The Gates, and Dark Tranquility for that mattter. Kataklysm are without a doubt the TRUE voices of metal. Bottom Line: Buy this album now.

Kataklysm's Serenity In Fire is definitely poised to set the metal world on fire. every song on this album is perfectly executed and they play like they mean it! standout tracks? the whole album is standout. as for Fred Durst's Numba One Fann, this is real metal, not that stupid a** Limp Bizkit you keep touting as number one! face it! Alfred Lion called Andrew Hill his last great discovery and "Black Fire" was the pianist's brilliant Blue Note debut. Despite the originality and complexity of Hill's compositions, Joe Henderson, Richard Davis and Roy Haynes sound like they've been playing them for years. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Black Fire, my review from Barcelona.......2007-06-16

While it can be considered that Andrew Hill and his recordings qualify as avant-garde, his music has melody, rhythm and harmony. Hill's sounds are as analytical as powerfully visceral. In some parts of his music it is noticeable the influence of three monsters of the piano: Earl Hines one of the best, the great Bud Powell and the supernatural and influential Thelonious Monk.
"Black Fire", Andrew Hill's powerful debut record for Blue Note, is an impressive and original record which builds from hard bop and even flirts with free music in some of its songs. Perhaps this "Black Fire" is more suitable to begin with Hill's music rather than his allegedly best albums, "Point of Departure" and "Judgement". Here he is backed by a kind of dream team, with Joe Henderson on tenor sax, playing it sensationally, in his usual way, the virtuous bassist Richard Davis, and the highly acclaimed drummer Roy Haynes, all of them leaders in their own bands. None of them are content within the limits of conventional hard bop and that is what makes "Black Fire" an outstanding classical record of modern Jazz. All of the themes, seven originals plus two alternate takes, are very good, so I highly recommend it. It is an essential and a must-have record. You can't go wrong buying it.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful debut.......2006-05-01

Andrew Hill's leader debut for Blue Note is one of his best recordings. The story is that Hill played piano on Joe Henderson's excellent album Our Thing and was then approached by producer Alfred Lion to make an album of his own music. Hill rose to the challenge, bringing seven strikingly original compositions that didn't fit into either the "free jazz" or "hard bop" categories.

It wasn't unusual in the mid-60s for Blue Note albums to include original compositions, but sometimes these compositions were pretty generic: a modal number, a "Sidewinder" clone, a blues number, etc. But not here -- each of Hill's tunes is distinct from those generic categories, and from the other tunes on the album. Hill's tunes include weird twists and turns, starts and stops, alternating sections with clashing ideas or moods, unpredictable rhythms, and of course a touch of Monk. "Subterfuge" is a percussive, claustrophobic piano trio performance. "McNeil Island" is another trio performance, but this time Roy Haynes sits out. Joe Henderson plays very lyrically on this one. "Black Fire" is a waltz, alternating an upbeat theme with a darker one. It's interesting to see how the soloists adjust to the frequently adjusting moods in their solos. "Pumpkin" (introduced by a striking Richard Davis bassline) and the sorta-Latin "Cantarnos" both feature intense, passionate melodies.

Hill got a major assist from his quartet: Henderson (tenor sax), Davis (bass) and Haynes (drums). Hill had great chemistry with all three guys, and each would appear on at least one Hill recording after this one. Henderson's playing is more avant-garde than on contemporary albums such as Lee Morgan's Sidewinder and Grant Green's Idle Moment. Haynes could perform brilliantly in any context, while Davis's virtuosic bass playing is perfect for Hill's music. (I guess that's why he played on Hill's first seven albums for BN!) Together, Haynes and Davis push and pull against the soloists, giving Hill's music the flexibility it needs.

Though Point of Departure might be a better album, Black Fire is probably a more accessible introduction to Hill's music. Be sure to check out his other Blue Note albums, including Judgment, Andrew!!! and Passing Ships.

(Note: this review is based on an older reissue of the album. I have not heard the recent RVG remaster.)

5 out of 5 stars "Black Fire" Burns Again.......2004-07-13

Andrew Hill's "Black Fire," out-of-print domestically for nearly ten years as a single-disc and often impossible to find used, makes an improbable return to the Blue Note catalog in the RVG series. This November 8, 1963 seesion is the underrated pianist's debut as a leader, and what a fine introduction it is to this unique jazz composer and performer. Joined by tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Roy Haynes, this quartet runs through the seven Hill originals (plus two alternate takes) like they'd been playing together for years. Those familiar with Hill's music know this is no easy task, as these songs, with their creative melodies, complex rhythms and intricate interplay make playing together cohesively quite difficult. Many are too quick to lump Andrew Hill into the jazz avant-garde, and while his music is expansive and exploratory, it is certainly firmly grounded in the post-bop jazz tradition. "Black Fire" must have been hard to put out, but now that it is here, listen to it burn!

5 out of 5 stars Canadian Bagpipes American Brass.......2003-11-11

I recently ordered and have just received the above mentioned album.
THANK YOU........
I ordered it just to have a copy of "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes, but after listening to the album, I am completely blown away. It is perhaps the greatest piece of music I now own. Depending on the song, I can get lifted up, mellowed out, or layed back, again THANK YOU, for having this album. I'm a very satisfied customer.

3 out of 5 stars Not a Great CD.......2003-11-07

This CD was originally longer with more titles. It seems the Altissimo! people after they acquired it from the Canadian Scottish cut out several titles and reduced the overall quality of the CD. Because of this and various other technical factors I would not recommend this CD at this inflated price.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Glenn's Best Albums!.......2006-09-24

When I first got into Samhain, I got Initium first. That album is pretty good, but it's only a decent work compared to this masterpiece that I found next!

I'm really loving the gothic rock o this album. It's one of my faves. I like this even more than Danzig(the band). This is almost as good as Static Age and Collection I of The Misfits, which is saying ALOT!!!

I haven't listened to this enough to give it an inside review, but I love it to bits! If you like Misfits, Danzig, gothmetal, or just like heavy music alltogether, buy, download, burn, or steal this album whenever possible! I'm sure ou won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars samhain separating themselves from the misfits-y sound.......2006-06-09

this album may be my favorite thing glenn danzig has ever done..yes, the misfits albums are very tempting, but this has more longevity and consistancy to me...with initium, glenn was still working the kinks out of samhain...hence them sounding more like the misfits on that release.....all in all, this album has enough speed, agression and halloween feel to please the misfits fiends, but has enough serious lyrics and overture to please danzig fans.

its hard to classify samahin though..some people say that they are the forgotten misfits albums, and some say it is merely the danzig band before they hit it big with "mother." all in all, i think punk and metal fans alike will dig this band..especially this cd.

3 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Great.......2005-02-21

I honestly don't know how Samhain was so successful. I suppose that Danzig just used the success of The Misfit's as a trampoline to reach the success that greatness that Samhain achieved. Both The Misfits and Danzig are better than Samhain, but that doesn't mean that Samhain is lousy. This CD isn't the best Samhain CD ever released, but its still okay. "Let That Day Begin" and "Halloween II" are by far the CD's best songs. Only buy this CD if you are a die hard Misfits fan, a die hard fan of Glenn Danzig, or a die hard fan of horror punk in general. Otherwise, avoid it.

5 out of 5 stars Music for the Occult!!.......2004-05-24

For anyone who's ever been into the Occult in any way, whether it was worshipping demi-gods, divining the future on a burnt piece of aluminum foil, or just plain worshipping Satan. This is the soundtrack. No, this isn't like Deicide, or Slayer..This isn't mosh pit stuff here. Instead, a much more hypnotizing, melodic rock with a black magic darkness rarely executed, almost never pulled off, except by the MASTER Glenn Danzig that would serve much better for a night of dark prayers than either aforementioned bands. Every song on this album is catchy and great. With powerful guitars and wailing vocals. The thing I love about this album is it's non-popularity. Almost nobody's heard this stuff. Which makes it easier for me to pretend that I'm the only one that has. I love Samhain. Always have. If you've stumbled onto this page and this review take my word for it. You'll NEVER hear anything else quite like it. And as Glenn sang: WE ALL NEED OUR TIME IN HELL !! WE ALL LOVE OUR TIME IN HELL!!

4 out of 5 stars GLENN DANZIG!.......2003-07-04

i loved the misfits but glenn was always my favorite in the misfits, samhain is a great band his lyrics are creppy and sexy at the same time as they were with the fits. much less "punk" then the fits but still good to me very very good

5 out of 5 stars This RULES.......2006-12-24

The bridge between "Hell Awaits" and "De Mysteriis dom Satanas" - listen to this and awaken to the dawn of black metal.

5 out of 5 stars I Once.........2006-12-18

This mischievious recital celebrates works inspired by the Devil: from Tartini's Devil's Trill, written after the composer dreamt that he had sold his soul to the Devil, to the infernal whirlwinds of Saint-Saën's Danse Macabre and Dompierre's Les Beautés du diable, composed specifically for La Pietà. It also pays homage to Paganini, the famed violinist who once confided to a friend that the Devil led him by the hand. This program shows an impish sense of humor as well... it features a unique arrangement of The Rolling Stones' Paint it Black and Sympathy for the Devil! Angèle Dubeau is one of Canada's most prominent recording artists. belonging to the exclusive group of Canadian classical soloists who can boast of having attained "gold" sales status. She is also the founder and director La Pietá. This CD is packaged with a bonus DVD featuring video clips and live concert excerpts.
