The B Sharp Jazz Quartet is a democratic combo of four young men from Los Angeles, but the clear leader is drummer Herb Graham Jr. Not only did he produce and arrange the quartet's third album, Searching for the One, but he also wrote or cowrote 8 of the 10 pieces and wrote the liner notes as well. And it's Graham's aggressively impolite rhythms that lift B Sharp out of the retro-jazz rut and make it a distinctively original and energetic band. Unwilling to merely keep time, Graham constantly elaborates and alters his drum patterns, pushing his bandmates into the Coltranesque free jazz of "Twelve Tone Blue," into the funk riffs of "The Call," and into the Third World exoticism of "Faranal." --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars a gem.......1999-12-15

B Sharp was one of the most exciting bands I've heard live in a long time. They aren't quite as exciting on disk as live, but since they've apparently broken up, hearing them live isn't an option any more :-(

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!!!.......1999-02-12

Album Description

This eclectic debut album has songs influenced by Latin, Indian, Asian and Classical music. A gutsy and risk taking performance Searching is a musical adventure for the Jazz enthusiast. Of the nine songs on the album, seven are original tunes. These songs are as eclectic as the band. The title song "Searching" has Latin roots with the three percussionists setting the groove. The beauty of "Nikita" offsets the aggressive nature of "Malcontent". Drawing from the many cultures of the San Francisco Bay area, "Goddess" uses tabla and tanpura to give the song an Indian flavor and "Coalescing" has Asian and classical hints. "The Source" is a solid modern jazz tune with an interesting bass groove. The group displays their avant-garde roots on jazz standards "Footprints" and "Lonely Woman" as they perform them with high energy and emotion. While Searching is Michael's quest for his voice in Jazz, it is also a musical adventure for all that listen.

5 out of 5 stars Made the awful commute to work wonderful!.......1999-11-04

Nice variety of sounds. Something different but still very enjoyable for us old timers. Liked it so much I even recommended it to my boss!

5 out of 5 stars Cooke Quartet, bringing it back.......1999-11-03

The Cooke Quartet is a bringing back the old school flavor missing from todays Jazz scene. Michael Cooke is an amazing sax player, who has put together an equally amazing group. This CD will blow your mind, a must for all Jazz lovers!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Old-School Jazz.......1999-10-07

The Cooke Quartet is a new band out of the Bay Area that pays tribute to the Old School Jazz sounds of Coltrane, Miles, Monk, etc. The combination of standards and orginals give hope to the current Jazz scene. If you are looking for some "new" music to put beside your "Live at Birdland" CD, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Innovative and emotional jazz!.......1999-09-16

Searching is a great album. It is not glossy or slick. It is jazz played with emotion from the soul. It made me feel as though I was sitting in a jazz club in the by-gone days, listening to musicians tell their stories of love, sorrow and joy through music. This group reaches the inner soul of us all!

4 out of 5 stars ageless.......1999-09-13

As a older female adult, I found this CD very enjoyable. I think any age lover of jazz will find something to truly relate to.
