Ray Barretto leads an exciting band on this 1991 date, an assembly of younger musicians who bring enthusiasm and original compositions to the great drummer's mix of jazz and Latin elements. While the group is only a septet, the leader's fine rhythmic detailing combines with the hearty trombone of Barry Olsen to give the ensemble the breadth of a much bigger band. Though the emphasis is often on cumulative force, the voicing of flute and trombone is particularly engaging on pianist Hector Martignon's "Dancing Winds." Among the solos, Steve Slagle's alto is a potent, emotive voice on "Blues for Leticia" and the intense "Handprints." The CD covers a range of moods, all of them kept dancing by Barretto's inventive percussion. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Hand Prints Review Cadence, July, 2000.......2000-11-10

For this album Kearns used trombonist (Paul)Olenick as his front-line partner for one session and trumpeter (Kenny)Reed for the other. The music has spirit, although the trombone tunes are obviously more muscular. The opening title cut matches Kearns and Olenick on a deep toned theme, where they exhibit the verve of the original Jazz Crusadors. This quintet, with (Mike)Jones,(James)King, and (Mike)Smith as the rhythm section, appears on four selections. The music is straight ahead, but it often turns into a real jam. Olenick swings loosely and Jones gets funky while Kearns leads the way on tenor or alto. This album, as did Blues in the Alley, includes a version of "Black Orpheus" done in a similar upbeat latin (more salsa than Cariocan) way. The gruff trombone solo by Olenick is the highlight of the piece. Their gospel-driven "Moanin" is also an excellent vehicle for the quintet.

The five other cuts with Reed and the rhythm team of (Robert)Grimwood, (Bhagwan) Khalsa, and (Allison) Miller swing in comparable fashion. Kearns and Reed generate plenty of energy playing the theme lines and then jumping off with commendable solos. This quintet also favors tunes with a latin beat, which they slide into smoothly with rhythmic vitality. Reed's tone is slightly more forceful than on the later recording (Blues in the Alley), and it alters the overall sound of the group considerably. His opening lines on the beautiful Hoagy Carmichael/Johnny Mercer piece "Skylark" and the ensuing tradeoff of solos with Kearns produce a delightful product. Kearns' solos tend to be of shorter duration, yet he always makes a firm statement.

While not designed to be groundbreaking, the music of Kearns and the quintet has a good feel and a happy face. While each of his quintets on these albums has a different character, they all strut their stuff to produce enjoyable and lively music.

        Product Description

Ben Sher is a unique jazz guitarist. Fluent in the classic jazz tradition of Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, and George Benson, Ben also draws from the rich Brazilian guitar tradition of Baden Powell, Raphael Rabello and João Gilberto. Ben combines standard jazz plectrum technique, with classical fingerstyle, to create a wide range of sounds and textures. Bens unique blend of American jazz and Brazilian styles has made him one of the leading educators and performers in jazz guitar today. A twelve year veteran of the New York music scene, Ben is originally from Pittsburgh where he received his B.A. in Music from Carnegie-Mellon University, while studying with the great Brazilian classical guitarist Carlos Barbosa-Lima. Ben relocated to Boston in 1984 where he studied with Mick Goodrick, receiving a Masters degree in jazz studies from the New England Conservatory in 1986. Before leaving Boston, Ben appeared on two recordings, Jumpin Into the Future, by Gunther Schuller, and Lookin Up From Down Below, by George Schuller, both on the GRM label. Ben also recorded and performed with the Boston Jazz Composers Orchestra. Bens first solo recording, Handprints, released in 1994 on Cymbal Records, received rave reviews. Handprints, which features Bruce Barth on piano, Dennis Irwin on bass, Mike Clark on drums and the late great Frankie Malabe on congas, is a Latin influenced jazz record. 9 Songs.
