One of the greatest improvisers of the hard bop era, tenor saxophonist Theodore Walter "Sonny" Rollins has gone on to be one of the most influential players of his generation. His early-1970s move to playing in an electric context was no less controversial than a similar change in career direction by Miles Davis; in fact, Rollins had fewer apologists for his move than Davis had. This live 1978 recording shows that Rollins could still play well in this context, even when sidemen like trumpeter Donald Byrd, on this session, sounded forced. Read the Book - Love the CD.......2007-05-13

I first read Don't Stop thje Carnival maybe 5 years ago. I knew Jimmy had written the musical, and wondered if I would ever hear it. This is great. Completely captures the entire story.

I absolutely love this album. I bought it not having any idea what it was, and at first was confused- why all the different singers, what in the world is Kinja? Well, it took me a while to sort it out, with some help from the liner notes. The fact that the music was great helped me stay with it. And then, one day I found myself rumaging through my Buffett for a poolside album, and I picked this one. It's been my favorite of Buffett's later career ever since, and I can only say I love it more all the time. The songs are really great, and it's nice to hear Jimmy trying something new- that's when he's at his best. Obviously, lots of island music here. My only warning is this- the songs don't stand alone. This album is one whole story. If you dig it, and want more, read the Herman Wouk novel. They're great companion pieces for each other. Sorry, guys, it's hard to quantify what's so great about this album, but give it a try. Thanks for reading.

Best Soundtrack Of A Musical I'll Never See Adapted From A Book I'll Never Read.......2006-01-27

I fell in love with this quirky soundtrack after hearing snippets of the song "Public Relations" (during of all things a talk radio discussion of public relations!), but I have little desire to see the musical and none at all to read the novel it is based upon. The reason? Primarily it is the awful, downbeat, deus ex machina ending, which shockingly and pointlessly kills off a major character in order to tie up some loose ends. Secondarily, I don't get all that much pleasure out of watching someone's futile struggles against continual disaster no matter how humorously it is written. The brief synopsis in the CD booklet is enough to allow me to understand the hilariously, defiantly upbeat songs without my having to endure either the lengthier tragedy of the musical or the reportedly depression-inducing 400+ pages of Don't Stop the Carnival: A Novel.

My advice? Skip the story, and just enjoy the music.

the worst Buffett, ever........2004-10-27

This is the worst music Buffett has produced. Have the CD, took the family to the concert, awful. When compared to "Floridays" and "Off to see the Lizard" (both 6 stars!), this shows how commercial Buffett has become.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Over all this album is excelent but there are three cuts on it that elevate it to legend status. First the title cut which is some of the very best latin influenced jazz that has ever been played. Silver city is just plain and simple Sonny at his best. Autumn Nocturne is quite possibily the best solo sax performance that has ever been recorded
