Oldie but a Goodie Buddy Holly.......2007-03-16
Very nice small collection for those who don't know much about this singer's short but very influential career!
A Darn Good Collection!.......2006-08-20
I'll Rave On about how wonderful Buddy Holly's work was and how delightful this collection is. He was a one of the Pioneers of Rock & Roll and no doubt influenced countless artists along the way. In early 1965 the Beatles did "Words of Love," as a nod to this incredibly talented man.
Don't just take our word for it - just get this collection!
Get the two-disc Buddy Holly collection instead.......2003-07-30
In the mid-late fifties, Buddy Holly and the Crickets came onto the emerging rock and roll scene. Unfortunately in 1959, just as Holly began to reach star status, his life was cut tragically short, in a plane crash that also claimed the lives of the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens. It's been forty years. How does Holly's music measure up by today's standards? Quite well, surprisingly? Read on to see how well the Twentieth Century Masters collection represents Holly.
THE GOOD:
You get several of Holly's biggest hits here, on a single disc. These include That'll Be The Day, Words Of Love, Everyday, Peggy Sue, Not Fade Away, Maybe Baby, Oh Boy, It's So Easy, True Love Ways, and It Doesn't Matter Anymore. These songs are nothing short of excellent.
THE BAD:
WAY TOO MANY SONGS ARE MISSIG IN ACTION! Where are Fool's Paradise, Well All Right, Heartbeat, Wishing, Peggy Sue Got Married, Crying Waiting Hoping, Learning The Game, and What To Do? And why doesn't the CD come anywhere near filling the eighty minutes that will fit on a single disc?
OVERALL:
Don't bother with this CD unless you can find it in the budget bin. Take my advice and shell out the extra cash for the two-disc Buddy Holly Collection. It costs a little more, but it's worth it.
a little lacking.......2003-07-19
this is a good cd to buy if you're not a huge fan of buddy's because you'll get his well-known songs which sound great. but it's lacking some of his other songs which, although they're not as popular, are just as good. so i found this collection to be a bit of a disappointment. there are other cds out there with a better offering of buddy's true talent.
A must have for any Rock-and-Roller!.......2002-02-22
I never quite realized how many great songs Buddy Holly had recorded in his very short lifetime until I got this CD. Rave On, It Doesn't Matter Anymore, Every Day, and True Love Ways are all fantastic -- yet all the current radio stations only concentrate on his famous "Peggy Sue" cut. For such a low $$ amount for this CD, you can't go wrong!

The title's baloney. Sure, some of Buddy Guy's most blistering guitar playing has been captured on his '90s recordings for Silvertone, but with albums like Muddy Waters's 1964 Folk Singer and his own 1967 solo debut A Man & the Blues on his résumé, Guy's status as a Chicago blues giant was assured long before his 1991 comeback Damn Right, I've Got the Blues. Nonetheless, that tune, the instrumental tribute "Remembering Stevie" (for the late guitar-slinger Vaughan), "Five Long Years," and the previously unissued "Miss Ida B" testify that at age 65 Guy still possesses rare depth and fire. His singing is big and soulful, capable of cheerleading a party or hurtling down to the depths of Delta blues heartache. His six-stringing remains wildly inventive and unpredictable, even on slight numbers like "She's a Superstar." And the inclusion of blatant stabs at the pop charts such as his "Midnight Train" duet with Jonny Lang take nothing away from the passion he puts into true blues performances like "I Need Your Love So Bad" and "Innocent Man," leftovers from earlier sessions that surface here. Baddest or not, this CD spotlights one of our greatest bluesmen in fine form. --Ted Drozdowski
Customer Reviews:
oh yeah.......2007-03-29
I like "Damn Right, I've Got the Blues" better, but this is still great. I loved Stevie Ray Vaughn, and since Buddy played at the last concert Stevie ever gave, I looked forward to hearing the instrumental tribute to him. I wasn't disappointed. Anybody who thinks Chicago blues is always loud and driving should listen hard to that one. Like any great music, there's more than one way to be blue. Yeah, Buddy.
Rick "Shaq" Goldstein says: "Do not read this review, unless YOU LOVE THE BLUES!!".......2007-01-21
Do you love the blues? I said, DO YOU LOVE THE BLUES? If you don't, then this CD is not for you! This CD was made for blues lovers. From the first guttural.. From the first growl.. From the first screeching.. Lyrics from Buddy: "DAMN RIGHT, I'VE GOT THE BLUES!" You are on your way to a blues experience. You don't get to warm up! You don't get to pace yourself! From Buddy's first exulted, words of "blues", you are hooked into a blues experience, that there's no getting out of! For those of you who are blues neophytes, in the electric blues world, Buddy, said that Stevie Ray Vaughn, was his best friend, and like a brother to him. With this knowledge, pay special attention to song #4, "Remembering Stevie". It's an instrumental that Buddy wrote in memory of Stevie, after his untimely death. This CD is a testament to one of the all-time greatest electric blues guitar performers... Mr. Buddy Guy. 5 stars for now and forever.
The Master of the Blues.......2006-07-27
Buddy Guy is "The Master of the Blues." He glides his fingers over his guitar like the wind showing his expertise with every note. I've seen him once in person and he made a lifetime impression on me. Buddy's Baddest will fill you with the energetic life force of a Buddy Guy concert.
The #3 best blues guitarist?.......2005-05-20
buddy guy always seems to get third billing behind eric clapton and b.b. king, but this collection of songs is certainly an excellent sampler of why he is always mentioned in the same breath with those other 2 lads !!!!! it is an excellent introduction to one very exciting and inventive blues guitarist (go visit his nightclub in chicago and check out all the autographed guitars on the walls)
these songs sizzle: "mustang sally" takes off like a rocket, "midnight train" really rocks, and the bass line on "damn right" is a killer. even the slow tunes are hot.if you are a hobbyist, this is a great collection of blues tunes to play along to. also great for listening to in the car by yourself- where you can play it LOUD !!!!!
Buddy's Bad.......................2004-11-14
I just bought Buddy's Baddest: The Best Of Buddy Guy at fye music for $20. I really did'nt care about the price because I had already previewed the songs at fye and new this album stood presence of greatness like Buddy Guy. This is my first buddy guy album I have been for so long been listening to Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan never came across Buddy until now........... The first track Damn Right, I've Got The Blues is just an amazing track filled with so much potenial, soul, and power in Buddy's guitar solo. And I have to say all of the tracks have buddy guy playing some great guitar solo's which is what us guitar, blues fans want right? I also liked Rememberin'Stevie. This album is a must have. Buddy Guy can really play!

Trying to boil down a prolific 40-year career into 18 songs is an impossible task, but that doesn't stop Rhino from taking a shot. To its credit, this single-CD compilation reaches across many labels, highlighting Guy's explosive work for Chess and Vanguard in the 1960s, Atlantic in the 1970s, and diverse labels in the 1980s. On the other hand, his Chess and Vanguard work deserve significantly more attention than they're given here. In addition, Guy's rejuvenated 1990s work for Silvertone is completely ignored. The result is a rather cursory overview of Guy's career, despite the high quality of what is present. The benefit of this approach, however, is that it displays Guy's versatility: The Guy of feverish guitar pyrotechnics, wailing vocals, and rocker intensity lives alongside a smoother, more soulful and melodic Guy. --Marc Greilsamer

Excellent Guy Retrospective.......2007-05-31
Best-of collections will never satisfy everyone. There will always be a favorite song left off, too much of other music that some people won't like, and many other complaints.
That being said, "The Very Best of Buddy Guy" does an excellent job of presenting the legendary guitarist from an early career/early comeback perspective. There is enough soulful vocalizing, mournful lyrics, and industrial strength guitar playing to please most, if not all of Buddy's legions of fans.
Standout songs include "First Time I Met The Blues (studio and live)," "This Is The End," "When My Left Eye Jumps," "Hello San Francisco," "Blues at My Baby's House," "She Suits Me To A T," and others.
If you want to get a feel for Buddy Guy, particularly for his early and mid range career, this collection fits the bill nicely.
Good Start for New Buddy Fans.......2005-02-10
Anyone familiar with blues Gitar' knows Buddy is the man. While I don't think that he's anymore talented than the other greatest living bluesman,Otis Rush, he seems to play like Otis with a whole lot more solos. What I wouldn't give to see one of their classic duels in the flesh. Buddy's chess recordings are of course top notch, but my favorite on this complition is the 7 minute extravaganza "Blues at My Baby's House", which in my opinion features some of Buddy's most soulful licks and vocals. If you can only afford one Buddy Guy record make it this or his 2-cd chess collection, that one really cooks.
Best Single Buddy Guy Compilation........2005-01-28
For someone on a budget who is interested in the music of this legendary artist, look no further than this single disc album. The sound and track selection here are excellent. Anyone interested in electric Chicago Blues needs to have at least one Buddy Guy album in their collection; and you can't go wrong here. There is some song overlap here with the "Chess 50th Collection" single disc compilation, but "Very Best Of" features 18 tracks over the 15 presented in the "Chess 50th Collection" cd. Plus, this disc has the great remastered sound the folks at Rhino are known for. For those of you have a few extra dollars around, I strongly suggest 2 disc set, "The Complete Chess Studio Sessions" which boasts 47 tracks!
It can be found here on zShops or eBay at a very reasonable cost.
The all around best intro cd to Buddy Guy!.......2004-06-10
There are too many great blues artists out there to spend a fortune on every artists complte recordings would cost tens of thousands of dollars, so getting comprehensive samplers of the artists earliest recordings in the best way to go. This cd have mostly the 50's & 60's sessions, his early stuff, and a bit towards the end of the cd his later works, but just a small sampling, the majority of the cd is his best work for Chess and other jump blues labels. This cd is exellent and is the difinitive sampler(though one should not overlook his duo albums with junior Wells), this cd will do a fine job of summing up Guy in his early prime and middle years. Guy has an incredibly piercing voice, similsr in texture and feeling as BB King, though less of a baritone, and his guitar solos, are creative, and even jazz and improvisation occur every so often. This cd is full of energetic performances, from shuffling jump blues to slow blues drags, it's all great stuff. Essential for any blues collection, to be complete.
Like sands thru the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.......2004-06-10
This is the life, a great cd of blues, lot's of love, peace and yeah man, his guitar is sweet soundin' with some jazz licks. As the world turns baby...

It's All Here!.......2006-03-16
Most of you may know Buddy Miles from the Hendrix's Band of Gypsies. However, at the same time The Jimi Hendrix Experience was cranking out their albums, Buddy Miles put out some gems of his own. If you aren't as old as me (older than dirt), you might have missed out on some of this great cuts including a couple of incredible covers of Neil Young and the Allmans as well as his signature song " Them Changes". Believe it or not I prefer this CD to the the Band of Gypsies even though I love Jimi Hendrix.
A convincing talent, not fully convincingly presented.......2003-09-05
Some of the cuts on this CD are all-time classics, innovative, catchy and demonstrative of real writing and playing talent. Others are likely to be appealing to Buddy Miles fans more than others. And still others suggest that this "best of" compilation, like too many others, doesn't fully skim the cream. If you want to own 1 sampler of Buddy Miles's work, this CD may be as good as any. Otherwise, dig further into his archives.
Many Miles to Buddy Miles.......2003-02-11
Buddy Miles is truly one the unsung heros of my generation. Whether he's playing by himself or featured with Santana, Malo or Hendrix, he is one of the greatest drummers in the business. I have been blessed to actually attend one of his shows and his band was tight! He sounded exactly like his recordings. I have loved him always. I miss his music so much. No one can do "Down By The River" the way he did. He had a technique unmatched by no one in the business. I have fond memories of myself, doing the funky chicken and the penguine on the dance floor. I strongly suggest that you purchase this album and try to sit down and listen to it all. I bet you will be out of your seat before he's done! I danced many miles when Buddy was on the stereo.
Significant stylist........2001-11-03
Here is a solid collection from an artist who has contributed mightily to the rock and soul scene - too bad he seems to be considered as only "the guy who did 'Them Changes', then was with Hendrix for a while, then did the 'California Raisins' thing..."
It's interesting that Buddy is perhaps a more impressive singer than instrumentalist, and this thought does point to two missing ballads which would have brought this review to a *five*, namely, "I Still Love You, Anyway" from the "Them Changes" album, and "Last Words Of Love", from "More Miles Per Gallon". I recall the latter tune as performed on the "In Concert" TV show, circa. '76. He sang it stage front and devastated the audience.
Buddy Miles Live.......2001-07-23
One of my favorite albums of all time and probably one of the best live R&B alums ever is the "Buddy Miles Live" released originally as a two vinyl set. I literally wore the album out many years ago. I think others did too because later I was trying to find a copy to tape and every copy I found was in bad shape. It is really incredible to me that this album has never been released on CD. That horn section blew me away. I am thankful at least for the songs they put on this compilation. Sounds like there is hope.

Inspired musicianship!.......2004-11-22
I had heard La Barbera's work before -- he was the principal arranger for the Buddy Rich Band for over 15 years and contributed to arrangements by a host of other leaders such as Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Tormé, Harry James, Glenn Miller, and Doc Severinsen - but this is the first CD I've found under his own name. With kudos on the back of the CD from the likes of Elmer Bernstein (composer of the title track) and Horace Silver, I knew before listening that this recording would become a solid staple of my big band library... and it has lived up to that promise. Crisp, bright, and solid arrangements swing from the first cut. The tracks move from rich symphonic fullness to dynamic smaller ensembles - embracing a full palette of colors - and the musicianship is top flight with folks like Bill Cunliffe on Keyboards, Clay Jenkins on trumpet, Pat La Barbera and Bob Shepard on tenor, and Joe La Barbera on drums. Horace Silver wrote: "Good arrangements -- good band -- good performance." I couldn't agree more!

The Best of Buddy Rich: The Pacific Jazz Years features 10 tracks culled from Rich's explosive years at Pacific Jazz. There are eight near-standards - including "Groovin' Hard," "Love for Sale," "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" and "Greensleeves" - as well as two previously unreleased cuts: a live version of "Apples" recorded at the Chez Club in LA and an alternate take of "Diabolus." Although the compilation isn't definitive, it remains a good sampling of a short period of Rich's long, prolific career.

BUDDY RICH AND THE ONE HANDED PRESS ROLL.......2006-01-21
guy's the buddy rich albums shown here are very much worth owning I agree but I need to dispel rumours of a one handed press roll that is not what he is doing! a press roll is akin to a hold note or whole note that is not possible even if you are buddy rich!! what buddy is doing with his left hand is really a shuffle played with one hand, it is more a one handed ostinado pattern if you will, ostinado is a pattern played over and over again, I wanted to clarify this as there is already to much "mystery " surrounding this subject as it stands now with out calling it a one handed press roll
THANK YOU, KENNY ALDRICH
PHENOMENAL EVERYTHING!!!.......2005-09-13
Unbelivable!!! buddy rich is the master when it comes to drumming!!! This CD is filled with many solos... not just from the master, but also from others in the band. he had by far the best horn section in the the world and it is definitely captured by this AWESOME cd. I find NO problems when it comes to sound or anything else. If you like jazz, druming, solos, or just buddy rich, you NEED to get this.
Buddy is the man!.......2003-01-08
I've always been interested in good drumming. From metal drummers like Gene Hoglan and Dave Lombardo, to prog. drummers like Mike Portnoy and Neil Peart, I have always admired guys that did more than just keep time. However, it wasn't until I bought this album that I realized I had no idea what drumming really was. Buddy Rich was often referred to as "the world's greatest drummer", and that was certainly no exaggeration. I have never heard anyone, in any kind of music, play like this guy did (there are a few guys in death metal that can match him in speed alone, but that's it). Not only was he incredibly fast and intricate, but he could lay back and groove very well too. A lot of his music was merely a vehicle for showing off his incredible prowess, but he was a very dynamic drummer as well. He could do it all.
This collection is a great example of the diversity that could be found in his music throughout the course of his career. You've got straight-out swing tracks, like "Rotten Kid" and "Love for Sale", more laid-back Miles Davis-type songs like "Diabolus", and even some rock/fusion stuff, like "Chelsea Bridge" and "Mercy Mercy Mercy", which add piano and guitar to the traditional big-band lineup.
However, the stand-out tracks, for me, are definitely the two epics, "West Side Story" and "Channel One Suite". Both around 12 minutes, they feature multiple tempo changes, excellent work from the horn section (the latter has an incredible saxophone solo spot), and of course some unbelievable drum solos from Buddy.
Apparently, Buddy was more of a performer than a songwriter, as most of these songs were originally composed by someone else, but the way he makes them his own is quite amazing. The swing version of "Greensleeves" is a perfect example. The melody is played on horns, and Buddy works in another of his jaw-dropping solo spots, and it sounds as if he wrote it himself. Very cool indeed.
I highly recommend this album, not only to fans of jazz, but to everyone who appreciates excellent drumming. I'm generally not a huge fan of the swing-style jazz, I'm more into the modern fusion type stuff, but I still think this is a highly enjoyable album from start to finish.
If you're only going to listen to one Buddy Rich album:.......2002-06-15
These tracks capture the early fire and excitement of the Rich band. His sidemen were OUTSTANDING players, and blended like no other big band. Menza's circular-breathing cadenza in Channel 1 is THE zenith for every reed player; Boice and Trimble are unequaled for range, clarity, and technical expertise; the trumpet section is tight, sharp, and clean WAY UP there. Yet, it's Buddy's percussion (not mere drumming) which is the catalyst! West Side and Channel 1 MUST be consumed by every drummer...the one-handed press rolls alone are a clinic!
A must for anyone thinking themselves a jazz listener.
The Definitive Buddy Rich CD.......2002-02-05
This CD is the absolute best when it comes to Buddy Rich, and even jazz. It starts off with a ten-minute version of West Side Story, with a drum solo at the end. After that comes my favourite song on the CD, Love For Sale. If you have to listen to one BR song, listen to this. It starts off with hi-hat work, 4 minutes of ensembles and solos, and a 10-second blisteringly fast snare drum solo, unbelievably using single strokes. The song finishes with a huge ensemble, and then into a 21/2 minute long drum solo with occasional bursts of other instruments, a song called Apples. A Masterpiece, should be in any BR fan's, any drummer's or any jazz fan's collection. Amazing

Most of Buddy's classic songs.......2005-03-07
This budget-priced album contains most of his most famous songs, many of which have retained their popularity via cover versions. Pop, rock, country, folk and jazz singers have all recorded their own versions of Buddy's songs, so even if you've never heard Buddy's versions, you may be familiar with the songs.
Here, you get Buddy's original versions of Oh boy (a UK number one hit for Mud in the seventies), That'll be the day, Peggy Sue, Listen to me, Rave on, Heartbeat (a UK top ten hit for Showaddywaddy in the seventies), True love ways, Everyday and It doesn't matter anymore.
Despite his early death in a plane crash, Buddy continued to have hits for a few years. Incredibly, he had three UK top ten hits in 1963 (Brown eyed handsome man, Bo Diddley, Wishing)
There are at least two obvious omissions, though neither was a UK hit for Buddy - remarkable, considering how famous they are. Not fade away (the original B-side of Oh boy) later became a top three UK for the Rolling Stones. Raining in my heart (the original B-side of It doesn't matter anymore) became a minor UK hit for Leo Sayer. Disappointing as those omissions are, if you want a collection containing all of Buddy's important songs, you must pay a higher price.
This makes a great introduction to Buddy's music at a bargain price.
Forget about Buddy? That'll be the day!.......2004-01-29
After seeing The Buddy Holly Story long ago, and recognizing the influence he had on the Beatles, i.e. Crickets/Beatles, I knew that one of these days, I'd get some compilation of his stuff, and I just did a few days ago. Also, the deaths of he, the Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens on 2 February 1959, the troubles with the law faced by Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard's turning to religion, and Eddie Cochran's auto death, signalled the death of real rock until the Beatles picked up the torch. The list of songs includes Holly with and without the Crickets. Highlights:
Originally a country song, the #1 "That'll Be The Day" with its electrified galloping riffs, made Holly a hit on both sides of the Atlantic.
The rollicking skiffle of "Oh Boy!" followed "That'll Be The Day", peaking at #3 in the UK, but only #10 in the US. From the guitar riffs, I can see the influence he had on the Beatles early albums.
A more romantic flavour is shown in the UK #4 "Maybe Baby" a mid-paced effort. "Think It Over," an exercise in classic early rock, barely missed the Top Ten in the UK. It features a piano solo.
Holly's first solo was "Peggy Sue" with a running rhythm guitar and drum, was his last solo US Top Ten hit, reaching #3, but #6 in the UK. The jangly guitar in the midsection is yet more evidence of his influence on the Fabs. It's B-side, the lovely "Everyday", features collaborator Norman Petty's wife on the celeste and drummer Jerry Allyson clapping his hands on his knees. A sequel was made of the A-side, "Peggy Sue Got Married", which in turn inspired a Kathleen Turner movie in 1986.
Not all Holly's songs did well. The mid-paced "Heartbeat" has a somewhat calypso beat. It sadly failed, reaching #30 in the UK. In the US...don't ask! "Midnight Shift" has a slower sound reminiscent of classic R&B, and was an early song released his star shone. It only reached #26 in the UK.
The more rockabilly "Rave On" was a solo Holly song that peaked at #5 in the UK, his best solo posting while alive. John Cougar Mellencamp covered this less successfully on the Cocktail soundtrack.
"True Love Ways" with its string section is probably my second favourite Holly song after "That'll Be The Day", showing a much softer side of him compared to his earlier recordings. Another lush song with strings is "It Doesn't Matter Anymore", which was a posthumous UK #1.
Holly also did cover songs, such as Bobby Darin's "Early In The Morning" and Chuck Berry's fast-paced "Brown Eyed Handsome Man." The latter's B-side was the more soft and wistful "Wishing", which became a Top Ten hit in its own right in the UK.
"Words Of Love" never became a hit for Holly, but this is probably better known because the Beatles recorded it for their Beatles For Sale album.
In reading the chart postings of each song, I noticed how much more Buddy was appreciated in the UK rather than his home country. The good that came out of that is better taste on part of the Brits, particularly a certain Paul McCartney, who now owns Buddy Holly's song catalogue.
This includes the US and UK chart positions each song reached. Sadly, it does not include "Well Alright", "Not Fade Away", "It's So Easy" and "Raining In My Heart", but this collection had most of what I wanted so I sprang for it. And as coming Monday is the sad anniversary of the Day The Music Died, I thought this would be a fitting time to review this.

Album Description
If family lineage had anything to do with it, Buddy Alan would have been a slam-dunk as a country music star. Fortunately, Alan -- the son of Bonnie Owens and Country Music Hall of Fame member Buck Owens and the stepson of Bonnie's second husband, Hall of Famer Merle Haggard -- had the talent to back up his illustrious background. From his earliest recordings, a duet with Buck Owens in 1968 and his first solo single, written by Haggard, it was apparent that Buddy had his own sound and the record-buying public loved it. Here is a long-overdue career-retrospective, rounding up the very best of the distinctive stylings of Buddy Alan, featuring all the early duets with his dad and the chart-topping singles that soon followed.
