Joe Pass was a classic jazz guitarist whose technical control of his instrument, even-handed tone, and ability to deconstruct standard melodies for improvisational purposes was unsurpassed. His mainstream style encompassed swing and bop, making him the perfect house guitarist for Norman Granz at Pablo records. The 1992 set Songs for Ellen is a departure from the rest of Pass's work for Pablo in that it is his only all-acoustic solo guitar album. Keyed by the beautiful ballad, "For Ellen," the recording shows Pass completely at home playing such standards as "The Shadow of Your Smile," "I Only Have Eyes for You," "That Old Feeling," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "How Deep in the Ocean," and "Stormy Weather." --John Swenson

An overview of Cowell's various compositional styles - but not always his most innovative and interesting music.......2007-03-25
This disc - a Naxos re-release of a recording made in 1990 and first published by Musical Heritage Society - provides a good overview of Cowell's various compositional styles - but not always his most innovative and interesting music.
The sunny Quartet for Flute, Oboe, Cello and Harpsichord (1954) would make a fine companion piece to Manuel de Fallas's Concerto for Harpsichord. Its neo-classical style (including a Bach-derived melody erupting at 1:40 in the 1st movement and a kind of medieval court dance at 0:50 in the finale) and somewhat rarefied textures are close to Falla's, but without the Spaniard's unique compositional voice. It is the kind of music that Poulenc, Milhaud, Sauguet or Françaix at their lightest could have written. "Polyphonica" (1930) is a short (3:45) study in dissonant counterpoint, again sounding quite neo-classical in its perky sonorities and rhythmic sprightliness.
The 6-movement Suite for Violin and Piano from 1925 again is modeled after the baroque suite. While the piano part (especially in the 1st and 5th movements) has some of the traits so characteristic of Cowell's compositions for the instrument, like deep sounding tone clusters, the violin melodies are mostly Bach-derived, making it all sound like the kind of Bach transcription so much in favor in the fifties. The suite's concept reminds me of George Antheil's 2nd violin and piano sonata (see my review of George Antheil: Violin Sonatas 1, 2 & 4), in which the violin part is supposed to represent the trite music of past and present and the piano, the pounding, dissonant music of the future - but Antheil's composition is much more original, provocative and fun than Cowell's. In the same style, Stravinsky's Suite Italienne (an arrangement of his Ballet Pulcinella after music attributed - at the time of the composition - to Pergolesi) is also a more endearing composition. Violinist Mia Wu's pitch is not always perfect and her tone verges on the sour.
The three "Anti-Modernist" (e.g. anti modern music) Newspaper poems that Cowell set to music in 1938 are hilarious - and there is obviously a personal message in their selection by the composer: the first, written in 1884, castigates the "clang, clash, clatter, clatter, clang and clash" of... Wagner's music, the second, from 1909, denounces the "Symphonic cyclones", the unchained "dogs of war", "the wild sarrusophones", the heckelphone suggesting "the crack of doom", the earthquake-producing "tonitruone" in... Richard Strauss' operas, and the last, in 1924, berates the "crash, clash, cling, clang, bing, bang, bing" - "what right had he to write the thing?" - of... Stravinsky's "fiendish" Rite of Spring! So Cowell makes it clear that new and innovative music like his own is always first decried and accused of being mere noise, before gaining universal acceptance (which sadly is not yet really the case with his). That said, the three songs are somewhat disappointing, in that they are couched in a musical idiom that is far removed from Cowell's customary "crashes, clashes and bangs", but quite traditional, full of grand Romantic gestures. Mezzo Ellen Lang acquits herself serviceably but with a voice of no particular bloom.
Ultimately, the most interesting pieces on this disc are those in which Cowell the experimenter and innovator is more in evidence: the four piano pieces (but the 1963 composer-performed selection of 19 of them on a Smithsonian/Folkways CD of Piano Music is a better choice for this essential part of Cowell's output, despite the disc's sonic insufficiencies) and the Irish Suite for "String piano" (as Cowell called it) and Small Orchestra - actually an arrangement in form of a concerto of three of the solo string piano pieces, and a fascinating etude in mysterious sonorities.
About Time.......2006-01-09
It is indeed about time that we get recordings of this American Master's work. His centennial passed in 1997 with all too little fanfare and many of his works unavailable to the listening public.
But leave it to the wonderful folks at NAXOS to bring such essential music from unjust obscurity and make it available at such friendly prices.
The venerable new music ensemble "Continuum" has recorded much obscure, difficult (at least to perform) and essential American music. Past recordings have included the works of Ives, Babbitt, Kirchner, Seeger, Wolpe, etc. And NAXOS is planning to re-release their recording of music by the expatriate genius Conlon Nancarrow as well.
This disc and its companion volume 2 (both apparently re-releases)contain great performances of this listenable repertoire by a composer whose work inspired the likes of John Cage, Lou Harrison, Aaron Copland, Roger Sessions and a host of significant composers. His experimental work gave rise to new musical techniques he later outlined in his seminal book "New Musical Resources".
These chamber works come from a range of times in Cowell's career and are representative of his talents in the chamber and solo repertoire.
Joel Sachs and Cheryl Seltzer along with their colleagues have given us great musicianship and fine recordings. Anyone interested in American classical music of the early and mid-twentieth century will not be disappointed. These discs belong in your collection.

Customer Reviews:
Now I get it!!!.......2002-12-18
I have never really enjoyed listening to "Jewish" music until this recording! What a fun romp through the holidays, simply the best sounding and most playable music I've heard in years. These people can really play, and the lyrics are easy and memorable. But it is the catchy tunes I find myself humming, and my kids always want to hear Sing Shalom, all the year through! I highly recommend this CD, especially for interfaith or sorta-faith families. Makes us want more from the Allards!

Seems like only yesterday the Kronos Quartet stepped up their career as musical mavericks with a coveted, wide-open contract with Nonesuch Records. Now it's Nonesuch's turn to give Kronos the big-package nod, gathering key works recorded by the group--from younger composers and time-tested veterans alike--into this 10-CD box set. As one might expect, the set is stuffed with contrasts, from the first CD, with its 11-part, upstepping John Adams suite and then the far more solemn Missa Syllabica from Arvo Pärt. Nearly 20 of these pieces here were composed expressly for Kronos, pitched and sculpted for their easily-racked mixture of straightforward string quartet roles and intelligently restructured approaches to the even the simplest gestures. Perhaps most key here is George Crumb's Black Angels, in large part due to Crumb's role in inspiring David Harrington to form Kronos 25 years ago. Crumb's music spirals and chases through the air, engaging high pitches and fast pacings as if they were ends in themselves. Gone from this set are most of the short snippets that have filled some of Kronos's other fine single CD recordings. In abundance instead are some of the legendary works: Morton Feldman's long, endlessly patient Piano and String Quartet (with Aki Takahashi), Steve Reich's unnerving Different Trains, and Henryk Górecki's String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2. There are also some of the astounding Eastern European works from Night Prayers as well, including the stunning Quartet No. 4 from Sofia Gubaidulina. And of course there are the Kronos biggie pieces: Philip Glass's works fill one CD, and so do Terry Riley's. What's more, Riley's Cadenza on the Night Plain and "G Song" are presented here in entirely fresh, new recordings. What the listener gets is a huge block of music, full of shifting colors and textures but perfectly apt in giving a wide-angle vantage on what Kronos has done for contemporary music. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
A worthwhile investment.......2003-10-06
It would be an understatement to say that this is a fabulous box set. All 10 CDs are packed with some fabulous music that beautifull highlights the first 25 years of the Kronos Quartet, and the booklet included provides a great history of the group as well as nice blurbs on the composers and their pieces.
Equally nice about the box set is the inclusion of multiple new recordings, thus making this a worthwhile investment for fans. The Peter Sculthorpe Quartets are a particularly nice addition, as are the added Piazzolla, Part, and Riley compositions.
Along with this, the "classic" Kronos recordings are all here: "Black Angels" "Different Trains" "Salome Dances for Peace" (well, exceprts), and Feldman's Piano and String Quartet. Of particular note, I think is the inclusion of Gubaidulina's Quartet No 4, a fabulous recording that is otherwise hidden in Kronos' recording "Night Prayers."
Yes, this is quite an investment, but I firmly believe that it's worth it - longtime fans and newcomers alike have a lot to gain from this collection.
Excelent compilation!.......2001-09-09
I like more classic period, like Hayden, but Cronos does it very well, technicaly excelent. The ten sets are wonderful recordings and the selection is unique. It deserves the investment, If you buy it, youre going to have more than ten hours of joy.
Amazingly Now Retrospective.......2001-06-26
Since their youthful start in the NW back in the 70's, Kronos has collaborated with, commissioned, or just played such a breadth of musicians it almost seems that breadth - and especially non western world culture - is their mission. But, while this conservatively and esthetically designed 25-yr-retrospective box (with its increasingly sophisticated photo-portraits) belies the pulsation of social angst and conscience that underlies the bulk of the inclusions, the latter concern, its vitality and relevance - and not some stylish chasing after cultural breadth - is what overtakes the listener/reader, rather soon. I say reader, since the booklet is very helpful, especially to the relative novice, and well balanced in its coverage of composers, historical contexts, performers, individual texts, etc.
There are probably more non contemporaries performed by the Quartet over the years than this selection would indicate. That undercuts their ties with the sense of revolution in music throughout the ages, but it leaves more time for the present: and that is where one expects the group wishes to be, is most contributory and challenged, and is best and most fairly judged. Highly recommended, both for those who know Kronos's work well and wish a handsome tribute on their shelf, and for those who do not but are open and ready to be affected, whether impacted esthetically, reminded socio-morally, or whatever combination of both befits.
How Could You Not Listen?.......1998-12-19
My opinion pales when compared to this CD. Indeed the group's ingeniousness, its knowing and its balls are in full display here, hopefully to put to rest any lingering contention that there is little more to Kronos than form. To any person who accepts the merits of 20th-century music, this CD presents the genius of our culture and teaches that daring and ingenuity do not have to be sacrificed on the road to technical brilliance. My only regret is that the CD does not include Kronos's interpretation of Bartok. But, so what? Górecki's here, as are Part and Benshoof. Listen to this CD -- soar and struggle with it.
Good for help to know up-to-date contemporaly music.......1998-11-28
The Kronos Quartet has released many albums. There let us see what the quartet has tried new titles and arrenges in each period. But this is the best set for understand the quartet as summary of thier works. The CDs are distributed by each composers and we can see thier identities easily.Unfortunately this dose not include all but be enough to see what the quartet has been.I hope that every classical music fans(not only contemporaly music fans) listen this CDs.

I love Ellen's jazzy singing on the first track, "Glad to Be Me" and the cool guitar licks throughout. The range of styles, from traditional to rock gives everyone something to enjoy. The repetitive, add-on songs, like "Rattlin' Bog" are fun and even my littlest one can sing along. And there's nothing quite like the good feeling of hearing two little voices from the back seat singing, "And I'll sing every day of my life."
A rockin' good time, for kids of all ages!.......2000-11-16
As a long-time fan of Peter & Ellen's work (I'm their daughter!) I was THRILLED to hear that they were in the studio working on a brand-new record. I hoped the new recording could live up to the standard set by their previous hits. When I heard "Good Kid," I was overjoyed! Peter & Ellen (and band, especially fantastic drummer Michael Allard-Madaus and guitar pro Duke Levine) sound *great*, the music will get you snapping your fingers and tapping your toes, and the lyrics appeal to all ages. Trust me, your kids will love it -- I know I do.

Schoenberg was one of Glenn Gould's favorite composers, and this selection of songs provides a fascinating rendering of the notorious Viennese modernist. The Book of the Hanging Garden is eerie and expressionist, but other earlier works are Straussian: it's always illuminating to be reminded of Schoenberg's debt to 19th-century Romanticism. And anything marked by Gould's Midas touch, of course, belongs near the CD player. --Joshua Cody

Very Nice Modern Lieder. Buy It........2006-08-07
'Lieder' by Arnold Schoenberg is packaged in such a way that one would think the composer is Glenn Gould, and not the Viennese master of 12 tone theory.
This reminds me of how much of a Wunderkind Gould was back in the 1960s. It seems he was to classical music performing and recording what Emeril Lagasse is to culinary endeavors.
But, I do not say this to warn you off this recording. On the contrary, this is an excellent collection of pieces, which have few hints of 'impressionistic' or ultramodern stylings. In fact, when the first CD starts out, I find the songs remarkably similar in feel to some of George Gershwin's songs in 'Porgy and Bess'. This impression doesn't last, but the sense that Schoenberg has brought something fresh to the Lieder persists throughout the work. After listening to a big helping of Wolf's lieder, I find Schoenberg a pleasant return to the lyricism of Shubert, with just a touch of modern flavoring.
Very worthwhile for Lieder fans.
If You Admire Schoenberg or Gould, You Should Get This Disc........2002-06-25
Yes, if you admire Schoenberg or Gould you really should add this disc to your collection.
Of course it features Schoenberg's early Opp. 1 & 2, and his pantonal song-cycle "The Book of the Hanging Gardens, Op. 15," settings of Stefan George's exquisite lyrics.
The Op. 1 songs are wonderfully Brahmsian yet wholly original Schoenberg. The Op. 2 songs are lighter and shorter. Both sets are almost contemporaneous with "Transfigured Night, Op. 4," with which almost everyone is familiar.
The George songs are contemporaneous with Schoenberg's String Quartet No. 2 in f#, Op. 10.
Gould wanted partners who would cooperate with his vision for the realization of the piece. This is why he never got along with Elizabeth Schwartzkoph. The vocalists featured here were hand picked by Gould for their malleability, hence the piano takes the lead in these performances.
Gould had a special love of Schoenberg, and since Schoenberg's oeuvre for piano is rather small, it is worthwhile to get these recordings for the piano work alone. If you want good vocal realizations, I recommend the recordings Fischer-Dieskau made on EMI--if you can find them.
Schoenberg's songs have been unjustly underrated, but to a lover of lieder, chansons, and art-songs, they are imperative.

Danton Shines singing this wonderful Selection of Songs.......2006-08-17
How can a voice be both delicate and rich and robust at the same time? This is Danton at her best. Jean Danton's "Songs of Innocence" CD is truly delightful - one of the most enjoyable classical CDS I own. Her voice is divine and soothing to the ears, unlike some sopranos. Her range is incredible! Her lyrics are distinct and well-formed and her songs of choice are engaging and pleasing. I made a point to hear Danton live after hearing this CD and I was not disappointed. I am waiting for her next CD to come out -she is truly enchanting.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT MUSIC FOR KIDS & PARENTS.......2004-04-28
We have all of Peter and Ellen Allard's music and love them. I give them as gifts and tell fellow parents this is the music you can listen to with your kids and not get sick of it. Peter & Ellen are great musicians and the songs are fun, not sickly sweet. We love the enthusiasm they show in their music and even go to their concerts when they perform nearby. Say good-bye to stale, sweet kids music and hello to fresh, fun songs!
Another winner!.......2002-12-21
I have been a fan of Peter & Ellen's music for a few years, and eagerly awaited the release of this recording, especially since I had sung "Building A Better World" with them at a concert. This is just a really fun CD, with tons of great songs for teachers and the parent in me loves it, too. They have a way of writing songs that my young ones enjoy but have a sophisticated sound that the adult I am appreciates. I LOVE "Great Machine", "10 In A Bed", Wild Running Horses", and all the others. There is a lot of dreck out there being called "kids music", but there is nothing as good as Peter & Ellen's material. I note they guarantee that kids will enjoy these songs: I bet they never have to satisfy that guarantee. Their music is a sure bet winner!

Customer Reviews:
Every last note..........2006-06-14
A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.
