Album Description
Ike Quebec's 1961-1962 comeback albums for Blue Note were all pretty rewarding, but Blue and Sentimental is his signature statement of the bunch, a superbly sensuous blend of lusty blues swagger and achingly romantic ballads. True, there's no shortage of that on Quebec's other Blue Note albums, but Blue and Sentimental is the best one by far. Quebec was a master of mood and atmosphere, and the well-paced program here sustains his smoky, late-night magic with the greatest consistency of tone. Part of the reason is that Quebec's caressing tenor sound is given a sparer backing than usual, with no pianist among the quartet of guitarist Grant Green, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. It's no surprise that Green solos with tremendous taste and elegance (the two also teamed up on Green's similarly excellent Born to Be Blue), and there are plenty of open spaces in the ensemble for Quebec to shine through. His rendition of the Count Basie-associated title cut is a classic, and the other standard on the original LP, "Don't Take Your Love From Me," is in a similarly melancholy vein. Through it all, Quebec remains the quintessential seducer, striking just the right balance between sophistication and earthiness, confidence and vulnerability, joy and longing. It's enough to make Blue and Sentimental a quiet, sorely underrated masterpiece.
Personnel includes:
Ike Quebec - Piano, Sax (Tenor)
Grant Green - Guitar
Paul Chambers - Bass
"Philly" Joe Jones - Drums
Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking album.......2006-05-11
This album is simply beatifull. Iqe Quebec's (tenor) tone is irremarkable. Iqe and Grant Green (guitar) colaborate so smoothly on this album, and the rytham section of Philly Joe Jones (drums) and Paul Chambers (bass) is just right for this session. The album's title does kind of say it all and I must warn you fast paced music lovers, this album is slow, blue, and sentimental. So if speed is what you need you ain't gonna get it here. The first three tracks are simply the law, they make this album what it is. Don't get me wrong the whole album is terrific, but the first three tracks set the pace for the rest of the album. Track 8 was recorded a week after the rest of the album and there are different musicians present. Quebec and Green are the same, but Sonny Clark plays piano, Sam Jones plays bass, and Louis Hayes plays drums. A great album to listen to first thing in the morning, or last thing after a good night of roaming the streets. Play it loud!!!
Great Rainy Day Music.......2006-03-17
This is a sweet CD. Listen to the tracks on-line and see if it's your thing.
blue and sentimental.......2004-10-09
the title song says it all. this CD is great jazz and anyone can enjoy it from the conneseour to the casual jazz fan. ike quebec never got his due, but he knows how to blow.
Tremendous music, but..........2001-04-22
The music here is as affecting as suggested by the other reviewers, but the sound quality, specifically the digital transfer, is poor, in my opinion to the point of being unlistenable. The highs are very harsh and metallic, and Ike Quebec's mellifluous tone is not done justice. There were a number of blue note transfers in the mid eighties that suffered in this regard: many of these are thankfully available remastered in the RVG edition, as is this, albeit as a Japanese import.
A Handfull of Heartbreak.......2001-01-27
As sweet and lovely a balladeer as Willis Jackson, Ben Webster, or Coleman Hawkins, among others, Ike Quebec is not well known and that is a grave injustice to his memory. But to hear Ike Quebec play a ballad is to experience something almost beyond description. If you could hear honey running down a hot ceramic plate in July, that would be the sound of Ike Quebec. For years I searched for more albums by Quebec only to learn that his meager output was due to the fact that he died in 1963. Any of Quebec's ballad-play will break your heart or, if you are one of the hardhearted, at least bring tears to your eyes. Buy this album and his "It Might As Well Be Spring" for starters and then experience the frustration of finding that he made only a handfull of albums as a lead artist before he died. If the music doesn't break your heart, the knowledge that there was so little of it will. Just turn down the lights, close your eyes, and listen.

Classy ladies singing classy tunes!.......2005-09-26
After watching a T V commercial with the song "Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy" playing in the background, I wanted my daughters to hear the complete song. We found this and I was very pleased to see that it included more of the beautiful songs from that era with many more of my personal favorites such as "Sentimental Journey", "I Don't Know Enough About You" and "Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief". Being a child of the sixties, these songs were popular before my time...but having been raised with an appreciation of the big band classics, I knew most of the tunes on this volume and wanted to give my daughters the same opportunity. It's great nostalgic music, with a wonderful variety of songs and artists. I highly recommend this musical...sentimental journey...back in time.
A strange, but pleasant collection.......2005-02-24
This CD is one of a number of CDs issued by Capitol with similar content; there is at least one other featuring female singers, and at least one specializing in male singers. The first thing to notice is that some singers are represented doing songs that other singers made famous, and even other singers who are on the CD as well. For example, Dinah Shore does Doris Day's "Sentimental Journey" while June Christy in turn does Dinah's "Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy"! Another recording by Dinah Shore is, to be sure, one of a song she made famous, "I'll Walk Alone." But the version on this CD is not her 1944 hit version, but a much later recording (though this is not concealed in the liner notes). Obviously, much of what drove the selection of recordings for this CD was the availability of the song on Capital. Still, listening to the CD, I enjoyed all the performances, and consequently have to rate it as better than simply "OK" -- thus giving it 4 stars.

Elly Ameling now more available .......2007-03-07
I had a 33 rpm album of Elly Ameling singing Schubert lieder accompanied by piano and clarinet at times. It was one of my all time favorite albums so I have been disappointed that I have not been able to find it anywhere on CD.
Now I can just buy this excellent collection. So much music in one place! Since I confess that I am far from an expert on the rest of her records, I look forward to hearing her sing many other styles and composers.
I think it is silly to criticize her for not singing Wagner, for example, since her version of many songs, especially lieder, are nothing short of sublime. I would like to hear how many Wagnerians sing Schubert or Mozart.
I doubt if they could approach the skill and soul with which Elly Ameling sings lieder.
Delight in every note.......2006-03-10
To speak as briefly as possible about this superb collection from an equally superb singer, what can I say but that Ms Ameling possessed a voice that shone with radiant warmth and star-like shimmer? And unlike many another light lyric soprano, Elly Ameling was possessed of a very high standard of musicianship, considerable intelligence, and a sort of immediate charm that captivates the listener.
So many of her recordings have still to be released on CD, but this 5CD-set goes some way towards remedying the situation. The repertoire spans a wide variety - French mèlodies, Lieder, light-hearted "sentimental" songs, Bach, etc. - and in each piece, Ms Ameling shows that quality of pearl-like beauty. It is a beauty which is also extremely pretty - a beauty of voice that is never overbearing and over-ripe, but perfectly blossoming upon the tree of inspiration.
I recommend this set unequivocally. It truly is sheer delight.
While they last..........2005-05-17
Elly Ameling held the quiet stage for recitals of great artistry and dignity for several decades and sadly most of the enormously successful CDs of her long career output are now unavailable. For those who have little access to the documentation of this very special artist, this box set is a must. It is a compilation of many of her recordings with differing accompanists, conductors, orchestras and composers. And while not all of the choices for inclusion here would be considered her greatest moments, there are enough works that sustain the warm memories of the little Dutch hausfrau who quietly and simply paid homage to composers with her clear and intelligent musicianship and radiant voice.
Ameling was known to schedule recitals of Schubert cycles and songs and in the afterglow of her performance answer the demand for curtain calls with additional Schubert melodies: she gifted her audience with the dignity of honoring a composer's works by maintaining the focus on that composer rather than milk the audience with the usual encore applause-getting favorites. And special moments such as quietly and pensively strolling through the orchestra during the Mahler 4th symphony to arrive at front stage, unapplauded, just in time for the opening line of her singing - those simple homage to composers and collaborators made her selfless manner endearing to audiences.
Despite the fact that Ameling's voice was on the small side she was always able to muster the projection to carry her message solidly in context with an orchestra. Yes, other more famous singers have recorded Ravel's quintessentially French SHEHERAZADE, but few have the perfection of diction and aura of mystery that Ameling maintained. Whether singing with piano or orchestra, or interpreting Bach, Mozart, Handel, and Vivaldi with the same degree of involvement as Brahms and Schumann and Schubert, Elly Ameling spanned a career that engendered passionate commitment from her fans. And this boxed set is a pocket full of memories to be treasured. Buy it before this too becomes unavailable. Grady Harp, May 05
Treasures From a Treasure.......2004-09-25
Treasures from a Treasure.
Ameling, one of the world's most beloved recitalists is captured here in a 5 CD collection offering some of her most beautiful recordings of song. While we are used to her perfection in songs of Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Faure and Hahn, an added joy is her "pop" side, tackling - without a whiff of pretension, Porter, Kern, Gershwin, Ellington, et al.
What an absolute joy it is listening to this amazing artist sing these songs with an almost uncanny natural ease. There is no resorting to a "pop" voice and yet most of these pop standards songs sound as though they could have been written for her. Clean attacks, sometimes a bit of the pop technique of hanging on to a consonant longer than a classical artist normally would shows an appreciation and understanding of the style. Still, there is never once a compromise of her vocal beauty.
I like the way the songs have been arranged for her voice in that she sort of sings them clean, unaffected in the first half and then lets loose and kinda "swings" with it adding embellishments but never really changing her voice (Price, von Stade and other favorite singers of mine seem to have always added a breathy quality to much of their crossover material.)
Ameling doesn't resort to trying to "let her hair down" or get down and dirty, but rather the honest with which she approaches every one of these songs shows how much she enjoys singing them and her style is as refreshing as stumbling onto a cool spring on a sweltering summer's afternoon. A wonderful surprise.
More than fully earned praise for an exceptional singer........2003-07-15
As I had the privilige of hearing this outstanding Lied-singer during her long career in Holland and being the proud possessor of almost all her recordings, I cannot but fully agree with the professional and joyful review of Mr. Robert Holliston from Victoria, B.C. Canada.
Yes, it is unbelievable that of about the 150 recordings Mrs. Ameling made during her long career (for the greater part of course on the 'oldfashioned' LP's, as well as the innumerable Dutch live-recorded radio-concerts), so few CD's have been released.
Speaking of tradition: it was the page-turner of the Wigmore Hall in London who told Mrs. Ameling after her first recital in this hall, that she reminded him of Elisabeth Schumann. (And he certainly didn't mean her looks only!)
For those who are eager to hear her singing Ravel's Shéhérazade (just one example of stirring imagination combined with her Art of Singing) I can tell you that Philips released a 2-box CD of this work in 1999, combined with Debussy's La Damoiselle élue and a compilation of French mélodies, i.e. Debussy, Fauré, Duparc, Satie. One of the gems is Caplet's Le Corbeau et le Renard which even make children, who know the fables of La Fontaine, revel in the singing of the quarrelsome birds....
Her brilliant accompanyist is Rudolf Jansen. Let us cherish great artists in their art!

Great introspective jazz by favorite artists!.......2007-07-07
It's really a shame that there is no music sampler available for this collection as for others in the Jazz Moods series! Jazz lovers could then hear a nicely-melded collection of quiet, introspective music by such favorites as the incomparable Karrin Allyson, Marian McPartland and Scott Hamilton. "Sentimental" is not, I feel, an accurate description of this cd's overall mood. The songs are emotionally moving, especially Mary Stallings' gentle, soulful rendition of Clapton's "Tears in Heaven." An excellent styling by Rosemary Clooney of a Johnny Mercer/Barry Manalow "When October Goes" is not to be missed. Also, Stefan Scaggiari plays an unforgetable piano version of Pat Metheny's composition, "If I Could." Late nights, rainy days, solitary autumn afternoons - these are the times best suited for experiencing "Jazz Moods' Feeling Sentimental."

Customer Reviews:
Good selection of late '40s/early '50s material.......2004-07-02
The period covered by this CD is a little strange; 1947 to 1950, so the earliest part of the fifties is included as well as most of the last half of the forties. But in fact, 1947 to 1957 was a unified period in popular music, so even if this collection doesn't mesh with the "decades" popular in classifying music, it's a reasonable period to cover. My own introduction to popular music came in 1948, so this CD contains many of the earliest memories I have of pop songs. This collection includes some of the best (even though a couple were already in my collection via other CDs I've ordered recently, but that's hard to avoid!)- every one of these a big hit in the 1947-1950 period that it covers.
This is an excellent collection for people interested in the post-Big Band, pre-Rock'n'Roll era of music.
2nd CD in an essential series.......2003-11-17
The entire four-CD series "Sentimental Journey" changed my life. These are all worth owning for the liner notes alone, which illuminate the era of big vocalists in American pop music, and these CDs run the gamut from ridiculous to sublime. On the ridiculous side, it's hard to imagine that "Love Somebody" or "If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd've Baked a Cake" were ever hits, but I have grown to love them specifically for their awkwardness. On the sublime side, Bing Crosby's "Far Away Places" and Patti Page's "Tennessee Waltz" (a song that refers to itself!) are classics, and all the cuts sound pristine. Bonus trivia: the song "Linda" is about Linda McCartney.

Anyone at all fond of the big band era should own this CD!.......1999-09-08
This CD is, without a doubt, one of my favorites in my own collection. Anyone who is at all a fan of the big band era must own this, as the entire CD is fantastic. It is worth purchasing, though, simply for Jo Stafford's rendition of "You Belong to Me" and Georgia Gibb's "Kiss of Fire."

Excellent remastering; Uneven Collection.......2007-05-05
Dorsey is here represented by a very wide cross-section of his art, at least chronologically. There are fine examples from the twenties, such as "Add a Little Wiggle" all the way to his music-making in the fifties and the connection with Elvis. Personally I consider the selections good, but not quite good enough, especially given three CDs. Tommy Dorsey certainly had dozens and dozens of records on the charts. In a three CD set it's almost legitimately possible to leave off as many of these as are included. My problem is that after sixty years the cream does rise to the surface - Dorsey never had THAT many BIG hits that you could, as this CD set does, leave off so many of his best numbers. This set includes fine well-done booklets with good articles, but to be blunt - this remains a pretty expensive set for the sum of the music. A tribute to Dorsey, at least in my mind, should include ALL his best numbers and go from there. There would still be pleanty of room for variety. Three CDs should have made it possible to do so.
Dorsey recordings were always among the best and clearest sounding of his era - Dorsey's perfectionism carried over into the recording studio. Whether or not Dorsey's was the top band, it certainly was a very good one, and nothing done in the last forty years comes close to capturing the Swing era's best bands. Dorsey had some very, very talented musicians: his band could and certainly did swing with the best of them if the music dictated. Dorsey was a huge fan of the violinist Fritz Kreisler - and Kreisler's broad rubato and full even tone are certainly replicated in Dorsey's trombone-playing. Listening to the famous Sinatra numbers you can follow along as Dorsey leads the way and sets the style, with Frank following up the trombone lead with his vocal. If one listens carefully passion IS there, but with Dorsey his playing, the actual sound of his trombone, tended to express itself in an sense of unpushed reserve; there was a constant elegaic tone, grand and wonderful - Dorsey seemed incapable of turning melodies into empty formula. Control and perfectionism gripped his music-making, but not quite to the excess some suggest. Dorsey's great popularity inclines critics to knock his real achievements. His music-making was at its best quite spectacular, uniquely and splendidly his own. And it came through a long hard apprenticeship. Behind the music was tremendous will power - Tommy Dorsey and his brother Jimmy were real hard scrabble fighters.
There are several single album sets of Tommy Dorsey to try if you wish to own only one. If you're on a very tight budget and want quite a few Tommy Dorsey numbers you might consider the 4 CD box set from Membran - not quite as good of sound, and the Membran's price suggests it is likely to be a piracy. The choice is yours.
excellent overview of Tommy's work with EXCELLENT remastering.......2006-07-19
Admitedly, this is the first Tommy Dorsey music I have purchased in a few years. I'm so glad I bought this one. It has OUTSTANDING liner notes and great remastering. It is essentially three sections. His sideman days, bandleading days in the studio, and the live broadcasts. Mix in a few unreleased cuts and some great hits (although the major ones are missing) and you have a great retrospect. I'm glad that the big hits are not here, since we have heard them over and over again. What this set does is help you appreciate the great talent that is Tommy Dorsey. His great ability to find new talent and the mind boggling discipline of his band. If you love Tommy Dorsey, you must buy this set. It is presented and remastered superbly. Now if RCA/BMG would only do this to some of their other jazz greats....
Swingin' overview that forgoes many hits.......2005-10-24
Although regarded as a giant of the swing era, Dorsey's legacy seems to have a tinge of second banana. As an iconic bandleader, he's often placed a half-notch below Benny Goodman or Glenn Miller, and as a trombonist he's revered more for his technical consistency than his innovation. These aren't necessarily unfair or inaccurate assessments, but when one considers the totality of his career, rather than just the sort of high-points that jut out as oft-repeated modern-day movie soundtrack icons, it's clear that he sits evenly with the elite of the era.
The hallmark of Dorsey's work was his relentless (and at time, violent) passion for perfection - something that shows in the tidiness of his band's arrangements and the clarity and precision with which his instrumentalists play. The flipside is that there's simply not as much passion in his music as others of his era. As a trombonist, Dorsey developed an especially smooth (and, at times, passive) style; it's distinctive, but not as engaging as other instrumentalists of his time. In contrast, his rougher skills on the trumpet, employed early on as a sideman, show a fire that he didn't often bring the bigger horn. Even his trombone showcase, 1947's "Trombonology," is more of an exercise in chops than groundbreaking musical thought.
This 3-CD set opens with some of Dorsey's earliest recordings, as a sideman for The Golden Gate Orchestra, Sam Lanin, Paul Whiteman and others. The trombone style he'd ply as a bandleader was already forming in these sessions; even when lending a fat tone to his solo on 1928's "Add a Little Wiggle" his horn remained subservient to the band. Dorsey soon moved on to perform and record with his brother Jimmy, but their earliest hits, such as 1928's "Coquette" and the following year's "Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love)," are missing, as are a surprising number of his early RCA chart toppers, including "On Treasure Island," "The Music Goes Round and Round" and "Alone".
Disc 2 essays Dorsey's years as a bandleader, though without the benefit of many more seminal hit singles. Included are classics such as Irving Berlin's "Marie" and the staccato instrumental "Boogie Woogie," as well as oddities like "The Hawaiian War Chant." Disc 3 collects sixteen radio recordings that show off Dorsey's first-take perfectionism in a live setting. In addition to classic sides from the 1940's war years (variously featuring Sinatra, Connie Haines and The Pied Pipers on vocals), the disc closes with Duke Ellington sitting in (and delivering pre-song shtick with Dorsey) for a 1946 take of "Take the 'A' Train," and Elvis fronting the band in 1956 for "Heartbreak Hotel."
The omission of early hits is a surprising choice, and though this set may still paint a balanced musical view of Dorsey's catalog, it's unlikely to match the memories held by fans of his arc of popularity. What's here makes for great listening, it just isn't a complete picture of Dorsey's fame. [©2005 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

Love that Swingin' Big Band Feel!.......2006-10-23
How could you go wrong with a big-band swing version of "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown"
....and that's just for starters.
Les Brown and the "Band of Renown" definitely deliver the goods on this album of favorites.
Excellent production quality....smooth and easy.
From the record sleeve:
The band is truly like a fine piece of well-oiled precision machinery that drives like a power-house, blends like a pastel, and sounds true and clear -- all in the relaxed manner achieved only by an experienced group of musicians like the "Band of Renown".
