Amazon.com essential recording

Ella Fitzgerald's voice was satin to Louis Armstrong's sandpaper, but when you put them together on a single song, their chemistry was unimpeachable. This disc selects highlights from the three albums they made together at Verve (including their Porgy and Bess), and adds a spiffy live track from the Hollywood Bowl. Though they don't harmonize much (Armstrong's voice wasn't built for harmony), Ella's dignified swing and flashes of teasing wit play off Satchmo's gritty, good-humored roar symbiotically. The material is mostly lightweight Tin Pan Alley stuff (lots of Gershwin, plus the likes of "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm"), and they fly it like a kite. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Bestof Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong.......2007-01-11

AWESOME!!!! Bought this CD for my husband as Christmas gift. We were both astounded at how wonderful this duo, the music and the sound quality are. Recorded in the late 1950's, this music is still incredible, even after all these years! The songs are timeless, the execution by Armstrong and Fitzerald IMPECCABLE!

Highly recommend this one .... you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Ella and Louis sing of life as we know it--and wow, how I appreciate the ride!!!.......2006-10-26

On this CD Ella and Louis Armstrong join forces to make an album that is pure magic. They've been lovingly teased as satin (Ella) and sandpaper (Louis, because of his gravelly voice); but no duo compares to them when they sing together. Louis and Ella obviously enjoyed making this recording; their voices are in excellent form and impart a certain sense of genuine happiness that is hard to find. Ella and Louis have voices that are rich, vibrant and full of electricity! This CD proves it.

The CD starts off with the charming and playful "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off." The album then switches gears and goes into the more soulful love ballad entitled "Our Love Is Here To Stay." Sublime! Other great songs on this CD include "Stars Fell On Alabama;" "The Nearness Of You;" "Stompin' At The Savoy;" and "Tenderly." Louis performs great trumpet solos on songs including "Tenderly" and "Summertime" that make your heart melt. In fact, every song is special on this CD; I also admire their rendition of "Under A Blanket Of Blue."

The musical arrangements are very well done. These tracks feature several great opportunities for us to enjoy Armstrong's trumpet solos.

The liner notes impress me, too. There is an adaptation of an essay by William Ruhlmann who wrote the liner notes for The Complete Ella And Louis On Verve. There are beautiful photos of Ella and Louis; and you get the song credits, too. A nice plus!

Overall, the chemistry between Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong makes for an experience that is truly in its own league. They enjoy their work and it shows. You will appreciate their energy and powerful renditions of these wonderful songs. I highly recommend this CD for fans of classic pop vocals and fans of both Ella and Louis. This is also a great budget priced CD for people who want to know if they will like this style of music.

Moreover, if you do like this CD I suggest you listen to the CD box set entitled The Complete Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong and another CD entitled Ella and Louis again. You can also try solo CDs by both Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong; they produced great music individually as well. You truly can't go wrong with this classic CD; and I hope this CD brings you the same joy and thrills that Ella and Louis communicate when they perform these magnificent songs. ENJOY!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have (in one form or another)--but think twice........2006-10-14

With all due respect to some other reviewers, this is not "an album" made by Ella and Louis: it's a sampler comprising three Ella and Louis albums. Normally I would not even consider, say, a Sinatra anthology mixing three masterworks like "Only the Lonely," "In the Wee Small Hours," and "Come Fly with Me": each is a unique and integrally whole project. But I have the Ella and Louis LPs, so I picked up this compressed anthology to take some pressure off of the vinyl.

Like most "best-of" collections, it suffers a bit from uneven textures (the lush orchestration of "Summertime" seems like an intrusion on the intimate rapport established in the preceding numbers) and audio quality (variances in mics, mixing and engineering can be hard to disguise). So unless some of the tunes on this anthology seem absolutely essential, go with "Ella and Louis," if only for its more coherent, unified feel--like two supreme musical storytellers having an irresistable conversation in real time and in real space. (If you have a piano, imagine inviting both into your living room for the evening.)

Louis' meetings with Ella were his most successful collaborations with another major star (the Ellington get-together doesn't compare), and unfortunately I know of no extended, full-fidelity vinyl sessions featuring Pops with Bing Crosby. What's most noteworthy about their pairing is Ella's restrained deference to Louis, and Louis' passionate, animated trumpet solos (it was not unusual for him to "coast" at this stage of his career). The duets are at times a bit sloppy, or "under-rehearsed," especially following the trumpet solo, but the absence of polish is in this case all for the better. This is a recording about communication of the most "natural" sort, not about perfection or disciplined performance. To hear Pops singing unison, then in 3rds, with Ella on an up-tempo "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" defies description. Simply his presence is enough to showcase Ella's grace and set us up for the sound of surprise when it's Louis' turn to sing solo.

Recently I heard a Wynton Marsalis tribute to Louis at the Lincoln Center. As fluent and dazzling as Wynton was, his performance made me appreciate Louis all the more. Perhaps Leonard Bernstein hit it on the head in his musical essay about jazz, "What Is Jazz?" Alternating between Louis' vocals and trumpet playing, he pointed out the similarity between the two, noting the hint of "pain" intermingled with the joy, or the brilliance of the trumpet sound, as evidence of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity, which might be said to be the essence of the blues itself. Fortunately, that sound is captured in virtually every note that Louis sings and plays on this recording.

5 out of 5 stars No,they cant take that away from me..........2006-07-14

Sixty odd years ago, over AFN,Europe, whistles and fade outs and sometimes only very feeble sounds of the devine trumpet or,the girlish , heavenly voice kept us hoping, kept us alive in the red quagmire. The thin ray of sunshine in the deep, dark well of the *paradise. No,they really cant take all this away.Yes , we will never meet again.Soon I would not be
able to remember the tunes I loved, but, thanks Heaven,we had the chance to hear them for so many years after THEY(and many others) left us.We may get sentimental,we may feel sorry for us,but we must be happy at heart, because thanks to vynils and CDs,they are still with us and the good old jazz can still be heard and enjoyed...

5 out of 5 stars 'Your Daddy's rich and your Momma fine looking'.......2006-05-24

The two greats the one- and- only Satchmo and the one-and-only Ella get together and make music which makes the listener happy to be alive. As another Amazon reviewer has written one feels that they simply so much enjoy making music that their attitude is infectious. The way each one of them in his/her own way play with the lyric and the music is just a delight. They've got it , in the deepest way. And they give it to their listeners with such incredible swinging lilting grace( Ella) and raspy, gravelly, charm( Satchmo) that one just loves to listen.
I do not agree with the editorial review which says that this music is 'Tin-Pan alley frill" You have some of the great popular songs here including one which is arguably the greatest, " Summertime".
These are the songs:

1. Let's Call The Whole Thing Off
2. Love Is Here To Stay
3. The Nearness Of You
4. Stars Fell On Alabama
5. Gee, Baby, Ain't I Good To You?

Louis Armstrong casts a long shadow over all of 20th-century American popular music, thanks in large part to the explosion of talent he displayed in the early part of his career--as an improvisational innovator, bandleader, and vocal stylist. By the time he cut most of the material included on this slight (less than 30-minute) set, he had comfortably settled into his popular persona, mugging and mopping his brow with a handkerchief. That's fine, of course, because Armstrong injects tremendous personality into even the most middle-of-the-road fare, such as "Hello Dolly," "What a Wonderful World," and "Gone Fishin'," a duet with Bing Crosby. Look elsewhere (for example, the budget priced JSP version of the Hot Fives and Sevens or any of Amazon.com's picks for his essential recordings) for the music that made him important. But these are songs that made him beloved. --Daniel Durchholz

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Hello, Louis! But man, they sure didn't give you enough time on this CD..........2006-11-30

This CD boasts ten great hits of Louis Armstrong. The quality of the remastering and the sound is excellent; the liner notes offer a great essay about Louis' career and there are excellent photos of Louis Armstrong as well.

The CD starts with the beautiful classic "What A Wonderful World." I agree with the liner notes: only Louis Armstrong could sing this song and leave you with the unequivocal impression that our world really WAS a harmonious place in which to live. "Hello Dolly" is perhaps my favorite song on this CD because Armstrong handles this number with so much class. The song is certainly romantic and nostalgic; but Louis performs this song in an especially joyful way with a big band flavor that only Louis could do.

Other masterpieces on this album include the romantic "Dream A Little Dream Of Me;" the joyful "Cabaret;" "That Lucky Old Sun" and the classic ballad entitled "Blueberry Hill." There's even a splendid duet with Louis and Bing Crosby on "Gone Fishin'." Moreover, the CD ends beautifully with the song entitled "When It's Sleepy Time Down South."

The musical arrangements are wonderful throughout! Excellent!

Unfortunately, however, I am very disappointed that there are only ten relatively short tracks on this CD. The total running time is roughly 28 minutes--not even half an hour. The manufacturer certainly could have added at least two more songs to create a better value for customers. Therefore this will be a four star review instead of a five star review.

In short, this CD stands as an introduction to the great talents and sophistication of the late Louis Armstrong. I cannot call this a retrospective because none of Louis' work with his band mates called The Hot Fives and Sevens are on this CD. If you like this CD, I suggest you try the box set entitled The Hot Fives & Sevens, Satch Plays Fats: The Music of Fats Waller and The California Concerts which were recorded live during the 1950s.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars "What a Wonderful..." CD this is!.......2004-01-13

Louis Armstrong may not have had the smooth and refined voice of Bing Crosby, and he wasn't concerned about charting unexplored musical territory, but his warmth and sheer love of music made Satchmo one of America's musical legends. Although Armstrong will perhaps be best remembered as a great jazz trumpet player, he was also a wonderful vocalist whose gruff voice could draw listeners with its honesty and friendliness.

MCA's "The Best of Louis Armstrong" -- part of the label's 20th Century Masters -- The Millennium Collection -- is a seemingly modest 10-track selection of Armstrong's vocal-and-trumpet songs recorded over a 19-year period (1949-1968). Some are familiar to Broadway and movie buffs (Armstrong appeared in the film version of "Hello, Dolly!" starring Barbra Streisand, and "What a Wonderful World" is heard in Robin Williams' "Good Morning, Vietnam"). Other songs, such as "Blueberry Hill", may be associated with such singers as Fats Domino, but Satchmo takes them and makes them his own. Particularly appealing are his rendition of "Dream a Little Dream of Me" and "Gone Fishin' " (which features a vocal duet with another American musical legend, Bing Crosby).

This CD is great for any fan of jazz or popular vocal music, but it is especially valuable to new listeners who have yet to discover the legendary Satchmo's rich musical legacy. It's a great introduction to America's truly native musical form, and it's a worthy tribute to one of the country's best known (and best-loved) musical ambassadors.

5 out of 5 stars Dream a little dream with this CD.......2003-09-13

The first time I heard Louis Armstrong's music was in the movie "The Five Pennies." I was watching it at home on a black-and-white TV set with my stepfather and when I heard Armstrong's trumpet playing I found myself paying closer attention to the Danny Kaye movie. Ever since then, when I hear the great "Satchmo," I smile and remember that first moment when I discovered my love of his jazz music.

The Best of Louis Armstrong, part of MCA's 20th Century Masters series, has a playing time of less than 30 minutes, yet its 10 memorable songs are captivating and hold me in their enchantment. Although I like all 10 songs, I'm particularly fond of "What a Wonderful World," "Dream a Little Dream of Me," "Blueberry Hill," "A Kiss to Build a Dream On," and especially the funny duet with Bing Crosby, "Gone Fishin'." The first four always put me in a romantic mindset, while "Gone Fishin' " brings back memories of never finding my dad at home because he had "gone fishin'."

The sound quality of this recording is excellent, and I believe that this is a good introduction to Louis Armstrong's music for those who have not yet discovered him.

5 out of 5 stars That one and only.......2003-03-09

Louis Armstrong has one of those voices that no matter what you are doing, when you hear him sing, you know its him. The distinctiveness and depth of his voice is undeniable. It is a good thing this is a CD and not an album, because it would be worn out by now if it were an album.

1 out of 5 stars Another disappointing CD in this series.......2002-03-15

Louis Armstrong was one of the most important musicians of the 20th Century
To have a CD that showcases his contributions to the music world
that lasts less than 30 minutes is a travesty! Once again the "20th Century"
Collection series has launched a dud. DO NOT waste your money on this or
any other CD in the series. Take your time and browse through other
collections and get more Satchmo for your buck!

5 out of 5 stars You simply must have this music or turn in your ears.......2005-01-29

You need to have this music somehow. If not, you might as well turn in your ears. No matter what kind of music you listen to, but especially if you play, you must have Louis's great work from this period.

The West End Blues is simply the greatest single musical performance of the 20th Century. Serious people I know would even argue that it was the greatest achievement of any art in the 20th century.

You need to have it either in this or some other collection. If you don't you have diminished your life. Get this collection if you cannot afford the big box set, or if you do not have the music in some of the earlier collections like Portrait of the Artist as a young man.

These records are not just good because of their decisve historic importance. They would sound wonderful if they had been made last night by a bunch of teenagers in Idaho.

I protest that one cannot give this 5000 stars!

      5 out of 5 stars Great collection..........2002-08-07

This is a great collection of the greatest bands of early jazz, Louis Armstrong's Hot 5's and Hot 7's. These recordings are each milestones in jazz history from "Heebie Jeebies" featuring the earliest known recording of scatting, and "West End Blues" which completely altered the state of jazz, and on it's own paying no attention to the other Hot 5's and 7's is one of the most influential pieces of jazz ever. The solos are beautiful and unlike anything previously recorded, and completely changed the direction jazz was heading, moving from simultaneous improvisation to passing from solo to solo like we know jazz to be today.
Unfortunately there isn't one great album to feature these recordings, since there weren't any albums. All of these recordings were generally a two sided record with only two songs. The result is many many large collections and boxed sets that can be fairly overwhelming, and unless you're a die hard fan may be overly excessive. The single CD collections are generally a multiple volume set, placed in chronological order, meaning that it takes multiple CD's to get all your favorites.
This collection covers the very best, and most essential and places them in a reasonable time frame and comes across with the look and feel of an album. The cover art, if that's important to you, is also several notches above most "Greatest hits" covers. Even if you ARE a die hard fan, and would want all of the boxed sets and extensive collections, this album puts the all of the best ones in a set a great variety in a well placed order for light listening.

5 out of 5 stars Best single-CD collection of Hot Fives & Hot Sevens.......2001-01-15

If you don't want to spring for a pricey box set, or your interest only goes as deep as the most essential sides, this is the best single-disc collection of the 1920's Hot Five and Hot Seven material. The most famous recordings are here - "Heebie Jeebies" (the first "scat" recording), "West End Blues", etc. - and the sound is fresh and spacious (the tracks are licensed from JSP, whose audio restoration of this material is unparalleled). Indescribably important music in a nice package. Should be in every collection of American music.
