Album Description

Les Baxter first served as musical director for Bob Hope, sang with Mel Torme, arranged & conducted recording sessions for Frank Sinatra & produced & wrote most of the first album by favorite lounge singer Yma Sumac. These two original Atlantic albums, 'The Academy Award Winners' & 'The Soul Of The Drums' (both released 1963), deliver his fascinating sound at their best, stand outs include a percussive 'Mai Ti' & 'Which Doctor?' along with movie theme 'Days Of Wine & Roses'. Collectables. 2002.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Les is 'more'! 2 LP's on one CD!!.......2003-02-04

It's so nice to see these great old albums from the early 'stereophonic LP' era finally being brought into the current world of CD's. Getting two albums on one disc is even better! The 'Acadamy Award winners' shows that Les was as good as any contemporary when re-working 'film & show' themes, but THIS CD is well worth the price for JUST the 'SOUL OF THE DRUMS' alone! This particular LP was originally released 40 years ago [1963]. His 'Exotica' LP's have already become highly sought-after, causing the prices to go through the roof, so ANY Les Baxter fan or 'Exocita' lounge-lizard shouldn't hesitate to order this CD! I would've given it 5 stars if they paired it up with 'The Primitive & the Passionate' [1961], which would've matched better [just WHO makes THESE decisions anyway?? :-)] Hopefully 'The Primative & the Passionate' will appear on CD soon [if not already?]
