Editorial Reviews
Rob Lester,
"Genuine charm and an appealing sound... A feel-good album where good spirits are contagious and it feels like a party."

Product Description
Guy Haines' second solo album, features classic showtunes and some lesser-known gems, including a few premiere recordings from songwriters like Harvey Schmidt & Tom Jones ("The Fantasticks"), Craig Carnelia ("Working"), and others. Guy is joined on three songs by some of musical theatre's up and coming ingenues: Jessica Rush ("Paint Your Wagon" in Los Angeles), Kerry Butler ("Bat Boy," "Hairspray," and "Beauty and the Beast" in New York), and Juliana A. Hansen ("Thoroughly Modern Millie" national tour).

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-01-05

3 Beautiful voices...maybe not Moffo or other greates but wonderful! How I wish the divine song All The Things Your Are was sung in harmony. A masterpiece of composition. WHERE IS THE DVD!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Adequate but disappointing.......2005-12-15

I love sopranos so of course I ordered this CD even though the singers are all b-team performers. I do believe that I listened to a different recording from the one described by the other reviewers. Each of the performers falls flat at least once while trying to reach for a note beyond her range. I felt myself cringe several times. Several of the arrangements are pathetic where the arranger tried accommodate three voices where at most one voice is appropriate. At times each soprano is holding fast to a note that clashes sadly with the other two notes. If you buy this, rerecord the play list. Skip the opening number which is the worst of the lot. DO NOT listen to Sempre Libera. You will weep for the wrong reasons. But by all means do enjoy the show tunes. This is where the ladies shine.

5 out of 5 stars Mind-blowing talent, superb recording quality.......2003-04-26

This may be the cleanest recording of a live concert I've ever heard, making it an exceptional showcase for such beautiful voices. I've heard Cynthia Lawrence live and this CD presents her voice with complete accuracy, preserving every last emotive nuance while still showcasing her thunderous power. (Cassello and Esperian's voices are equally impressive, of course, I've just never seen either one in live performance). Even after playing this CD at least 25 times, I still can't listen to Lawrence's "My Man's Gone Now" without it sending a chill down my spine. With due respects to the Three Tenors, I have to say the ladies put on an even more thrilling show.

5 out of 5 stars Opera without tears.......2001-05-30

This recording is an absolute must. The selection of arias and songs is impeccable and beautifully matched to the singers. Of particular note "O Mio Babbiano Caro" will bring tears to your eyes for sheer exquisite beauty. Also Kathleen Cassello's performance on "Sempre Libera" and "Summertime" will take your breath away with pure crystalline beauty. This performance is a wonderfull way to introduce the novice listener to the world of opera. I find this performance superior to the the much hyped " Three Tenors" and I hope someday a followup performance will be in the works.

5 out of 5 stars Soaring sopranos!.......2000-10-17

I saw the PBS presentation of this concert a few years ago. As a novice opera listener, I was completely impressed and enthralled by the lovely voices of these remarkable vocalists. My only regret is that I cannot find any other recordings featuring these talented performers. This CD is an excellent way to acquaint oneself with many operatic favorites! Get yours today!

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

5 out of 5 stars "The First".......2007-04-15

Greetings,

I am one of the few who actually got to see "The First" -- a musical about Jackie Robinson.

I do not have this CD but wish it had the title song from "The First" ...don't think it exists anywhere. I actually still remember some dialogue/lyrics from it and would like to hear it/read the words again.
I also would like to know if any version or scenes from the play are available to do in a school. Anybody?
Have a nice day!

4 out of 5 stars MISSGYDER TOTALLY MISGUIDED.......2004-07-21

This is not so much a review as a rebuttal; I was the orchestrator for this album, MISSGYDER's assertion of totally synthesized sound is totally incorrect: the charts were played by 4 reeds, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba, harp, percussion, drums, keyboards, and a string section. I sorry the sound didn't meet the approval of the reviewer labeled MISSGYDER, but I can testify to the reality of the orchestra, the players, and my scores which are at the Library of congress.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs from not-so-great musicals.......2003-04-19

I was given this for my birthday, along with Unsung Sondheim, my favorite composer. I was excited, and a little bit skeptical because I've NEVER heard of these musicals. Once I started though, I was hooked. I want sheet music to so many, they're fun to sing along to, or just to listen to they great singer/actresses they got. My personal favorites are Smile, Sherry, Ragtime Romeo, and Silverware. I recommend this for all Broadway Babies and theatre buffs like me!

3 out of 5 stars Poor Production Ruins Good Product.......2001-05-15

Unsung Musicals is a great idea, presenting songs from shows that didn't get their due on Broadway. However, the production of this CD is very poor, using poorly synthesized instruments and cheesy drum tracks. I could have recreated these sounds using a home software program, they're so bad! The songs themselves are good, but the album is so horrid in terms of listening value that you'd be embarrased to put this in your CD player. I recommend this CD only for students and professionals in the music theatre world as a way to learn songs you wouldn't normally hear, but other than that, I can't recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Unsung perhaps, but often wonderful.......2001-02-14

Just because a musical was not successful, that doesn't mean that there were no good songs in it (pardon the double negative). These selections may be songs that are not well known from shows in the same category, but some of these are real gems, sung by fine show singers. My favorites are "Smile" (from Smile), "Ragtime Romeo" (The Vamp), "Sherry!" (Sherry!), and "She's Roses" (Drat! The Cat!).

Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Lovely Listening.......2005-10-26

I had previously only heard Mr. Haines singing on the compilation cd "Jeepers Creepers" but on the strength of that decided to give this cd a try. I am so glad that I did. Every track is a delight. How refreshing to hear a pleasant tune sung by a good singer and actually be able to understand and enjoy the lyrics.

Mr. Haines must be the singer composer's dream about... he doesn't try to compete with the song a al American Idol singers or "trash it up" but sings it sweetly, melodically and with the appropriate feelings... funny songs sound happy... wistful songs wistful...I recommend this as a gift to yourself, and to others who actually appreciate what good music making is all about.

    5 out of 5 stars What a delight!.......2005-09-05

After thoroughly enjoying Guy Haines first CD,Haines His Way, I was thrilled to discover that he has done it again. It was well worth the wait. It is a delight to listen to and I highly recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars A delicious, delightful winner.......2005-09-05

While this CD will be a special delight for lovers of show tunes, the appeal extends well beyond that, to people who love good music of all styles. I started to enumerate my favorites, but the consistency of the CD in song selection and performance makes for an album that goes from high to high. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THIS "GUY".......2005-08-17

What a fantastic CD. I took the advice of friends and got it, even though I had previously only heard Mr. Haines sing on THE STEPHEN SCHWARTZ ALBUM and a LOST IN BOSTON CD. What a delight to have a full CD of Mr. Haines' great stylings. A few of the selections were not instant winners with me, so it will be interesting to see how they grow on me over time. However, among my favorites were THEY DON'T GIVE MEDALS (To Yesterday's Heros) from the made-for-televsion musical ON THE FLIP SIDE; I'LL TAKE YOU DREAMING (from another of my childhood's favorite films, THE COURT JESTER); and GETTING AWAY WITH YOU. Without question, the two highlights of thIS CD, for me, were MILLIONS OF MEN, and LOVE, LOOK AWAY. The first song touched me, the second brought me to tears.

I can't say enough about this album or about this singer. Guy Haines is a treasure. He deserves to be listened to and enjoyed by music lovers everywhere. If there was any justice in this world, NEW GUY IN TOWN would walk off with a Grammy next year. It gets my vote for Album of the Year.

5 out of 5 stars A Guy and Some Dolls.......2005-07-24

At last we have a follow up and companion to HAINES HIS WAY - the first CD from Mr. Guy Haines. A NEW GUY IN TOWN - produced by Bruce Kimmel (he also did the first album) - is a worthy successor and a fine stand-alone disk as well.

The packaging is attractive with colorful lettering on a b/w photograph of Mr. Haines' - well his feet anyway. The other photographs are indicative of the tone of the album. We see glimpses of Mr Haines, but he is never completely revealed. The camera doesn't do it, but the songs do.

The song selection is a bit more outre this time around, but there is nothing there that is without interest. The liner notes are by Kimmel with Haines himself writing about the song selections. Unlike the first album which featured a rollicking duet of "Pitiful Penniless Bums" with Brent Barrett - the duets on this CD feature the ladies only. Three of the fifteen tunes are duets.

"On Your Toes" and "They Don't Give Medals to Yesterday's Heroes" start the CD off well. "Toes" is the type of song that Rodgers and Hart wrote better than anyone else. It is with the third song, though, that the CD starts to soar. This is "I'm Past My Prime", a duet from LI'L ABNER by Haines and Jessica Rush. It's a fresh as the day it was written and you can almost imagine the singers in character as luscious Daisy Mae and Marryin' Sam.

"Getting Away With You" is a rather repetitious pop tune, well done but not a knockout like the first three selections. Haines then moves into territory familiar to him and those of us of a certain age. Gene McDaniels' unique style on his pop hit "Point of No Return" is matched by Haines enthusiasm for the song. It's got a great pop "hook" (with a nod to Rodgers and Hart at the beginning) that is played for all its worth by Haines and his collaborators.

"Second Avenue" and "Sure Thing" are pleasant choices, and it is nice to have them recorded. "Sure Thing" - from the movie COVER GIRL, is a duet with Kerry Butler. I am not sure what character Butler was trying to convey, or why she is singing the way she is. Maybe I will eventually get the message or idea or something, but her vocal certainly lets this song down.

Then we go to the next song - the album highlight for me. Haines does Rodgers and Hammerstein song from FLOWER DRUM SONG usually sung by a woman. It is "Love Look Away." Haines does the intro mid-way through the song instead of at the beginning and it works very well. This is my favorite song on the CD.

"Born Too Late" written by Kimmel is an ode to disco, as if anyone were nostalgic for that genre.

"Millions of Men" written for, but never used in, I DO! I DO! is a tremendous song that has a lovely melody and a sentimental but not sticky philosophy. Haines is well served by the arrangement of Kimmel and Grant Geissman. The piano on this track, played by John Boswell is thrilling to hear.

A duet with Juliana A. Hansen of "Little Red Hat" from 110 IN THE SHADE is rollicking and rocking. It is a great companion to the first duet, and it's great to have a contemporary recording of this song.

The rest of the disk, "The Faraway Part of Town," "Sail Away", "Cowboy Waltz", and "I'll Take You Dreaming" are all fine. The closing song - from THE COURT JESTER - is especially well sung.

With this release, Kimmel stakes his claim with a new label, Kritzerland. It will be interesting to see what arcane titles he will be releasing over the next few months. One can only know that whatever it is, it probably belongs on your shelf.
