About the Artist
The John Malino Band is currently playing nightclubs and events in and around New York City. This band, ranging from four pieces on up is composed of talented musicians with strong backgrounds in jazz. John Malino is a soulful singer and guitarist. He began as a rock and roll artist, but his main focus has been jazz for the past seven years. Press reviews have compared Malino to John Pizzarelli, Harry Connick, Jr. and a young Frank Sinatra (see insert). Malino is also a songwriter; recently David Sanborn played saxophone on one of Malinos original tunes. The band plays jazz throughout New York City and the East coast, venues range from NYCs Birdland to The Kennedy Center.

I learned of the John Malino band from a friend who actually saw the band at Sardi's while visiting New York. After getting the CD I understand why she went on and on about this incredible singer. I think comparing Malino to Harry Connick or John Pizzarelli does not do justice to Malino. He is an original with a distinctive, beautiful voice and unique style. The selection of songs is fantastic, sort of a greatest hits of great American songwriting. I've worn out my copy of this CD.

Very nice compiliation of some great old standards, just the way you'd imagine a joint like Sardi's would sound on a good night. Malino's voice may lack the purity of a Torme or a Fitzgerald, but the guy can deliver a lyric, and his band knows how to swing. And a couple of minor glitches here and there remind you that these are real people performing in a real place for the pleasure of other real people.
