Customer Reviews:
If Hank had survived.......2007-02-13
There have been countless imitators of the Hank Williams' sound. But none, absolutely none, come close to the excellence of Vernon Oxford.......which might explain why "Country Music" Radio has forgotten him. There are 5 superb CD's in this box set, and there's not a bad song in the bunch. Vernon has been rightly accused of sounding like Hank Williams, not unlike Frankie Miller. But, I'll go a step further and say that Vernon was not copying/imitating Hank, but rather sounded much like a mixture of Hank Williams and Jimmy Martin (minus the Bluegrass). If I had to characterize his music, it is safe to say it is the Hank Williams' style of the early-50's mixed with the swinging honky-tonk of the early 1960's. Very unique sound that is relentless from the 1st track on CD1 to the last track of CD5. The sound and mixing are superb; well, what else would you expect from a Bear Family release? A huge book is included covering not only Oxford's true country (Ozark) upbringing, but also a detailed discography. Vernon was truly too Country for Country (as Dale Watson would say), which means you should make owning this box set your life's ambition. I can honestly say that out of the hundreds and hundreds of CD's, LP's, 78's, and Cassettes that I've somehow accumulated, that this Box Set is definately among the top 5, and it belongs in every (EVERY) country music lover's collection. If country music were only still this authentic! A+++++++

Customer Reviews:
Covers with Character.......2007-03-28
An enjoyable group of covers that tend to wipe the interpretive varnish off tunes to show new possibilities and insights. That said, other cover versions have occasionally done the same with greater revelatory means - for example, the Jason Shand version of "Dancing Queen."
Covering the flame.......2007-01-16
Luka Bloom takes advantage of his personal style to transform some songs in ways you would certainly not expect. As a result, his "Keeper of the Flame" is a small treasure of a disc, giving you new angles on songs that you wouldn't have cast in the light that Luka does here. After all, would you be the one to cast Bob Dylan and The Cure on the same disc? U2 and Abba? Joni Mitchell and Radiohead? Luka does so here, and it all makes sense.
The funny thing is, it is the most obvious songs on the CD that seem to leave the least impression. "If I Were A Carpenter" is a natural folk-singer's choice, but Luka's muscular guitar and fiddle version of U2's "Bad" and his guitar voice version of Radiohead's "No Surprises" make you wish he'd made more of those adventurous choices. Even the oddly convincing version of "Dancing Queen" is a risk taken with charming success.
If you are familiar with Luka Bloom's best work, that he can inject his personality into the work of other songwriters will be no surprise to you. (Or even if you are only familiar by way of his near-hit cover of LL Cool J's "I Need Love," for that matter.) But if not, then "Keeper Of The Flame" is a solid CD from a singer with a catalog of excellent music.
Keeper of The Flame.......2005-09-17
It's wonderful: between the music and the poetry, this album is wonderful! The more you hear it, the more you love it.
Amazing - possibly two mazings.......2004-12-30
I stumbled upon this artist several years ago while enduring a three year job assignment in Elmira, NY. I was looking through the public library's CD section and came across a Luka Bloom CD, picked it up, put it down and continued to rummage around and ended up picking it back up quite by accident. I had selected several others by Robert Cray, Rusted Root,The Rolling Stones, Santana and there it was the Bloom CD. Said I to the librarian as I checked it out, "It's worth a free listen." On the way back home I popped it into my car's CD player and was hooked. Simple uncomplicated and better yet very soothing to the ear.
Anyway back to the subject at hand. "Keeper of the Flame" is an interesting compliation of "covers". Who'd a thunk that an ABBA song would sound like anything other than an ABBA song - Bloom's styling of "Dancing Queen" is definitly unlike ABBA's antispectic presentation. The best cut is Radiohead's "No Surprises". But as I reflect upon it there are several other very listenable cuts The Cure's "In Between Days", Dylan's "Make You Feel My Love", and Joni Mitchell's "Urge for Going". For that matter of the twelve cuts on the CD none will disappoint.
WOW.......2002-01-20
I wasn't paying attention when I bought this CD. I knew Luka Bloom from "The Acoustic Motorbike", which remains a personal fave.
So I had no idea that this was an album of Cover Songs. All I can say is "Wow". The most surprising thing about this disc is the eclectic collection of artists Luka chose to cover, from Rose Royce to Robbie Robertson ("Golden Feather"), to Nina Simone (nice choice, that one), to The Cure and Bob Dylan. An acoustic version of Abba's "Dancing Queen"? No problem. U2's "Bad" (possibly my favorite U2 song) comes across in a whole new fashion.
This is a great album of consumate artistry. For the life of me, I can't figure out why commercial radio hasn't found a place for the work of Luka Bloom. Then again, you can buy this CD, and he'll be our little secret.
Whaddya think?

Customer Reviews:
Pure Delbert.......2002-07-09
I owned both of these albums on vinyl many years ago. (I currently have Second Wind on CD). Although I've collected many of Delbert's albums since, These two are in my opinion among his best ever. Not a lot of frills, just soulful vocals and one of the tightest bands you'll ever hear.
Delbert's interpretations of "Spoonful," "B Movie," and "Two More Bottles of Wine" are timeless -- the 20-plus years since their original release makes no difference. This CD would be a good addition to the collection of any Delbert McClinton fan, and a terrific pick if you're only in the market for one of his albums.

Mitch Cooks !.......2002-08-24
Here it is--another great set of numbers from Mr. Boogie Woogie Piano himself, Mitch Woods. It's hard to single out particular songs when the CD just swings from start to finish--I was sorry when it was over.
Mitch also has a few special guests on this one--and I do mean special ! John Lee Hooker--James Cotton--Johnnie Johnson--Earl King--Lee Allen--this disc is bursting with talent.
A couple of years ago, I saw Mitch and his band at the Ottawa Bluesfest, and was knocked out with his music and showmanship--these guys are fun ! I immediatly went out and bought all the Woods CDs I could find. I didn't see "Keeper of the Flame" though, so I'm pleased to add it to the collection.
So--what are you waiting for ? Order it !
Oh yes--if Mitch comes your way to play a gig, don't miss it. Rock on, Mr. Woods !

Four Brothers Band: An essential moment in Jazz history.......2000-08-15
This is beautiful, entertaining and exciting jazz, and for 1947, years ahead of its time; sounds like something from the early 60's. The sound is great, too. This disc is what a lot of people are looking for in the modern jazz of the post-war era. I thought this was the 2nd Herd for the record, as it states in liner notes (1st Herd, the Thundering Herd, having had recorded for Columbia), but I like this better than that period, although I may be in a minority.
"Early Autumn" featuring solo work by one the "Four Brothers" on saxophone, Stan Getz is an all-time classic. I really want to give this 4 1/2 stars, though 1/2 increments not formatted here. The listening value of these recordings will appreciate in time for you, here, although even this is not quite Woody at his absolute tops. For that, I would go to, or wish for a CD re-issue of "Woody Winners", recorded live at the Basin Street West in San Francisco in 1965 for Columbia, which might lend evidence to the compliment reputedly given by Count Basie that Woody's band was the only band capable of "cutting" his band ("Winners" was briefly re-issued on CD overseas from Sony/France a few years ago, and maybe you can find it at a used site or auction, but why anyone in their right mind would give that up I don't know). In the meantime, compensate by starting your Woody collection here if you haven't already. Satisfying. I'm glad to have this in in mine in a big way. Woody's creativity in the 40's and even later on astounds me, the way he help jazz move along by leaps and bounds.
the third herd at its finest!.......1999-03-26
absolutely my favorite Woody Herman CD. I bought all these records on the old 45rpm format way back then. If you were a big band jazz fan during the 40's and 50's ........ well then this CD will bring back a hundred and one memories.

Michael jams occasionally at our local brewpub. He is a gifted performer.
His speed and dexterity leave one breathless. His command of his instruments make this (sighted) new mandolin player bow in humble admiration.
You must buy this.......2002-02-19
If you are a Bluegrass fan this is a must album. Michael shows why he was voted Fiddle Player of The Year by IBMA. He is from my area of the country so I've watched him grow from a fiddler just jamming in the hallway to playing in Rhonda Vincent's band. He has Tom Adams on banjo and some other great musicians and singers on this album.

Keeper of the Flame by Vernon Oxford.......2004-12-01
Vernon Oxford has the sound of Hank Williams and we really enjoy his songs. We specially like his religious songs.
Best Pure Country Compilation.......2002-09-22
If you like country music, you have to own this five CD set. I have owned the set for over a year and each listening is like the first time. Vernon puts so much feeling into the songs it is hard to believe that he never had the success that he deserves. At least five stars. Give it a listen and you won't be disappointed.
straight forward country.......2001-08-01
There's nothing fancy here. no haunting vocals.no videos that go with it. no sexy cd covers. just good solid 100% country music, and that what makes this box set so exceptional. this man feels what he sings about. This set covers from 1965-1981 and with the exception of a few novelty "redneck" songs, this is art in the form of country music and a masterpiece at that. In one of my favorite movies, "Tender Mercies" a down home country artist (Mac) is asked some advice from a young band about music;Mac's reply "just sing it like you feel it" and that is Vernon Oxford in a nutshell. In that same movie, the very next scene is Mac's ex-wife entertaining at the opry with the usual mechanical dramatics that is so prevelant in today's "country" music which is just pop music that is dead as a stump. What makes this a great country cd beside the great steel guitar, fiddle, and poetry is the sincere authentic singing as Vernon truly "sings it like he feels it". Nice gospel and Hank Sr. covers as well plus a 32 page booklet. highly recommend especially if your dissatified with the slop known as "country music" on the radio these days.
The purest voice in Country Music........2000-12-31
One day Vernon Oxford will achieve the recognition he deserves. Hopefully he's still performing when that happens. What? - one almost top 40 hit (Shadows of my Mind) during his entire career. Yet Vernon has arguably the purest, best, most soulful voice in all of country music. Be it honky tonk - gospel - or bluegrass, he's the best. Buy it - you'll never, ever tire of listening to this truly great collection. Incidentally, Vernon also made one Cameo screen role in his career - He's the preacher that married Sissy and Tommy in Coal Miner's Daughter.
VERNON OXFORDS VOICE IS TRULY A TOUCH OF GODS HAND.......2000-08-31
OVER 30 YEARS AGO I HEARD HIS VOICE THAT HAS STUCK WITH ME TO THIS DAY. THERE ARE COUNTRY SINGERS AND THERE ARE SINGERS WITH HEART AND SOUL WHO TELLS A STORY WITH THEIR VOICE. Customer Reviews:
And you thought the originals were good..........2001-10-11
To release an album of covers can often be seen as as sign of one of two things - (1) a stalling of the creative juices resulting in desperation OR (2) an artist who's found his stride and is confident enough to take on such foundation stones as U2 "Bad", Radiohead "No Surprises" and even The Cure "In Between Days"...and this is the 1/8 of the iceberg we can see above the waterline...
If you like Luka, then you'll like this...if you've never heard of Luka Bloom before and you're thinking of making your first purchase, then this could be the easiest way of making that step...all the benefits of Luka with the peace of mind that you will know some of the songs already....GO ON...BUY IT....YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO!
