DAVE BRUBECK, WCPN 90.3 FM INTERVIEW, NOVEMBER 25, 2001
"I was amazed at how talented he is...he's the first one I met that young that was THAT talented."
Product Description
Groovin' On Mount Everest is The Matt Savage Trio's first studio recording. It contains over an hour of original compositions by 9-year-old pianist/leader Matt Savage, along with two standards by jazz greats Duke Ellington (Satin Doll') and Harburg/Arlen (Somewhere Over The Rainbow'). "Groovin' On Mount Everest" is turning the jazz world on its ear. Matt has thrown another curveball, stunning jazz lovers with the maturity of his music, the creativity of his improvisations, and the complexity of his compositions. And now that he has been performing with his adult, world-class musician sidemen for about a year, the Trio is really tight. John Funkhouser has incredible bass solos, as does drummer Steve Silverstein. It's hard to imagine that Matt could top his previous CD, but he has done it. Matt's range of music skills and his use of dynamics and tempo changes is very different now. It shows he is a more mature pianist, ready to compete with the big guys on their level. Listen to the CD and you forget that the pianist is a child
you are just left breathless with the thrill of a fantastic CD. Then realize that Matt is almost ten years old, shake your head, and listen again!

This is the real thing...........2004-02-07
When I told them it was a nine year old boy from the Eastern Seaboard and it wasn't his first disc, I was 1) called a liar and 2) told to play it again... they are now converts and I am so very pleased to have made the discovery for our little band of thieves. I found Morphine [the BAND, you degenerates] and followed through with Twinemen after Sandman's tragic demise.
It would be unfair to short change the other two thirds of the trio [especially after reading up on their bios!] - John Funkhouse and Steve Silverstein [bass & drums, respectively] keep a solid backbeat for their wild young piano playing leader; no small task when the young man behind the 88 keys may well be the greatest jazz pianist & composer since T. Monk.
"Keep on Groovin'" as Matt has said and go directly to savagerecords.com for a little savings if you choose... their storefront is clean and well organized, their shipping & customer service is top notch [thanks to Larry ["da' Man"] and if you ask REALLLLLLLLY nice they might even have some of the "out of print" discs if you go now Now NOW !
And finally; "props" as they say to Dianne at Savage Records - she may well be in line for a nomination as Jazz Supermom...
An amazing young man.......2003-06-23
