"It is wonderful jazz … beautifully peaceful and spiritual."

Product Description
Featuring improvisations recorded live as part of the group's popular Jazz Vespers programs, Fire in the Soul is acoustic straight-ahead jazz providing a way to further explore the common ground between contemporary music and timeless wisdom. Pianist Ravenscroft's spiritually-oriented use of jazz and other contemporary sounds sets the mood for deeper thoughts and introspection, but the band doesn't hold back and some cuts really smolder. These weekly Jazz Vespers services are set in a candlelit atmosphere amid breathtaking modern architecture influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright. A portion of proceeds from this recording benefit Ravenscroft Scholarship Programs at the Claremont School of Theology in Calif., with whom Ravenscroft is developing Music Serving the Word Ministries.

5 out of 5 stars Ladies and Gentlemen....Lady T!.......2007-06-12

I wish I was alive when this album first came out...but here's to making up for lost time! I really can't understand why Teena doesn't get half of the acclaim she is worthy of. This is definitely one of her best albums, and I can't say that any song on here needed to be skipped. The only setting I have my IPod stuck on with this album is "REPEAT." "Irons In The Fire," "Young Love," "You Make Love Like Springtime," and "Tune In Tomorrow" are album highlights that showcases what Teena does best-blowing away the competition. Long live the T!

5 out of 5 stars The best of Teena's Motown albums........2007-05-31

This was Teena's best Motown release in every way. The title track and the wistful ballad "Young Love" are among Teena's most emotive ballads but the entire CD is great from start to finish. The huge hit "I Need Your Lovin'" is the perfect marriage of Disco and Soul--it sounds fresh to this day. "Irons In The Fire" was Teena Marie's best Motown CD and is a must-buy for all who love passionate and heartfelt Soul Music.

5 out of 5 stars I Love It.......2007-01-06

I haven't heard this CD since I was a baby when I was raised by my mom. I'm very happy that I'm in my late 20's that I can get this album again.

5 out of 5 stars One of her Best..........2006-12-21

If you don't have this Cd, you are missing out. This cd is a musicians dream. Funky rythems with a little jazz swing. Unbelievable. A MUST HAVE.

5 out of 5 stars Teena's Best Album.......2006-08-27

"Iron's in the Fire" is a veritable showcase of Lady T's talents. Vocally Teena is at her best on this album..singing ballads, jazzy numbers, funk and Latin tinged songs with equal effectivness. The title track "Iron's in the Fire" is probably one of my all-time favorite Lady T songs..the way she comes into the song into her first note is so pure, honest, and beautiful..it is breath-taking. She starts "Tune in Tomorrow" with an amazing gospel humming and then moves into sassy jazz riffs. Teena's exploration of her lower register with flights into her upper-range make this her best vocal performance of all of her albums. Teena's vocal prowess is well matched by her amazing song writing arrangements and composition. From the playful bassline of "I Need Your Loving" to the soulful balladry of "Young Love" to the jazzy "Irons in the Fire" and "Tune In Tommorrow" to the latin sounds of "Springtime", I was amazed that this was her first solo-produced album. If I were to introduce someone to Teena Marie I would recommend "Irons in The Fire" as a first listen.

Album Description

With a hit Broadway play featuring the music of Earth, Wind & Fire (EWF) and an extensive tour into the fall, they are back in the limelight in a big way. EWF was one of the first bands to bring elements from African heritage into the pop mainstream, and they did it with pride. African rhythms mingled freely with intricate Jazz, Funk, Gospel and Rock instrumentation and melodies. Maurice used bombastic horn arrangements, layers upon layers of groove and a little African thumb piano called a Kalimba to dog-ear Earth, Wind & Fire's music, not to mention his charismatic tenor vocals. The messages in their songs are spiritually charged affirmations of love and hope, promising and comforting in difficult times and frivolously fun in lighter moments. On stage, EWF earned accolades for their enormously entertaining concerts. They were the first black act to engage rock theatrics (lights, pyrotechnics, stunts, magic tricks) and sell-out arenas worldwide. Flashy, explosive and heartwarming, it is a genuine love affair that unfolds each time the band takes the stage as Maurice beams warmth, peace and raw sexuality with panache throughout the proceedings. 35 years later . after earning seven Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards, nine double platinum / Top 10 Pop albums, eight #1 R&B singles, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Lifetime Achievement honors from the NAACP, ASCAP and BET . Earth, Wind & Fire and their music remains as inspirational and influential as ever. Their relevance to the landscape of pop music remains evident from their recent electrifying performance at the Super Bowl, two consecutive summer concerts on .The Today Show., a knockout team-up with stellar Hip-Hop duo Outcast on the Grammy Awards. And in addition to these performances EWF.s music can be heard on Broadway: HOT FEET is an infectious, heart-stopping new dance musical that features such hits as .After The Love.

Wonderful collection of romantic and groovy tunes! Highly recommend this cd. Just love it!!

4 out of 5 stars Substandard Re-Release For Fans!.......2006-10-09

After EWF satisfied their ever important Japanese fanbase (yeah whatever!) with the exclusive 'Avatar' CD in 1996, they altered that CD's original tracklisting, and included 'When Love Goes Wrong' for the shorter American edition re-titled 'In The Name Of Love' (1997). Fast forward 9 years, and Kalimba records suddenly decides to re-release 'In The Name of Love' complete with the 3 missing tracks that were once exclusive to the 'Avatar' CD ('Change Your Mind', 'Take You To Heaven', and 'Bahia'). Cha-ching..$$$$!! Make the fans buy the CD all over again huh?? LOL! Anyway, these three tracks are top notch, and will make you upset at EWF for not including them on the CD back in '97. **Also, F.Y.I., 'Change Your Mind' has been edited & remixed, which results in a shorter track for this 2006 release, so fans are still being shortchanged! BOOO!! This fact combined with the cheap looking cover art & packaging results in this CD losing a star in my ranking.

With 'In The Name Of Love', EWF released a solid followup (or continuation!) to 1993's vastly underrated 'Millenium'. This 14 track CD sounds contemporary and retro at the same time, featuring productions utilizing full horn sections on ballads ('Cruising'...orginally on the 'Get On The Bus' SDTK), and guest raps that complemented the vocals on 'Revolution (Just Evolution)'. For the most part, Maurice White's production is VERY good, up to his 70's tricks of using link tracks and interludes to shift moods, and dropping in loud electric guitar when you least expect it (the heavy funk 'Rock It'). Also, 'When Love Goes Wrong' sounds like it was originally slated to be on Philip Bailey's solo CD, but it fits in for the most part.

All 'n All, the music on 'In The Name Of Love' is mostly catchy but not monumental like the EWF's classic era from the 1970's, but the group displays their sense of fun, and for a moment, they reverted to questionable attempts to sound hip & street (the track 'Keep It Real' for example). Still, even with that song, EWF is to be commended for the solid tracks & great musicianship, BUT they have to be criticized for not including ALL of the music on the original version of this CD back in 1997. Making us buy CDs all over again is NOT cool, and you wonder why fans insist on making BETTER CDs at home ? Think about it!

The term "'70s arena band" doesn't usually suggest a platoon of seasoned black musicians in neo-space togs fervently preaching a utopian musical ideal in which the boundaries of jazz, funk, soul, and pop melt away into one monster, transcendental groove. Meet Maurice White's visionary Earth, Wind & Fire at the peak of its powers and popularity. This 11-track live album is culled from recently uncovered tapes recorded at 1975 EW&F arena shows across the East Coast in support of their classic That's the Way of the World album. Such is their self-confidence that they open with the album's massive hit, "Shining Star," an ambitious gambit that sets the tone for everything that follows. White demonstrates a generous mix-master sense when he invites jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis to sit in on an improv-rich rendition of "Sun Goddess," while That's the Way's title track and "Reasons" also receive lengthy workouts that remind listeners that EW&F was one of the original--and most accomplished--"jam bands." If anything, this is an album that will likely leave EW&F fans yearning for more. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars It's ok.......2007-01-30

I nearly have everything of EWF so I saw this on Amazon and I had to have it. It's pure without any digital equipment. Some songs are played in a different way but if you have: Gratitude [EXTRA TRACKS] [ORIGINAL RECORDING REISSUED] [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]
than this one you have to buy too! They are like brothers and they have to be together, it's ok...

5 out of 5 stars Better than "Gratitude!".......2004-02-21

I couldn't disagree more with the reviews here! Maybe I'm just too used to "Gratitude" of which I have owned three copies. I never bought this until recently and I LOVE this CD! I actually find the performances on this CD to be more polished and energetic than those on the other CD. "Sun Goddess" actually features Ramsay Lewis on keyboards here, and "Evil" and "Kalimba Story" just smoke on "Alive in 75." As mentioned previously by another reviewer, I prefer these performances of "Reasons" and "TTWOtW."

To each his own I guess, but this CD hasn't been removed from my CD player for two weeks now! I still love "Gratitude," but this CD is now my favorite live CD of all time! Just getting a chance to hear the finest live band EVER, plus two of the best guitarists in Johnny Graham and Al McKay is a REAL treat! If only there were a DVD video for this concert recording!

5 out of 5 stars the real thing, and it feels good.......2004-02-20

I love this release. Some other reviewers talk about it not being polished, etc. That's the whole point. I love the "Gratitude" album yes, but this is better in that there are no overdubs, while on Gratitude there are plenty, mainly vocal. Also the arrangements here are more controlled and not full volume all the time. For example i like the version of "Reasons" here better than the Gratitude one. For one, Bailey's vocalizing during the breakdown are so much more soulful. Also the tempo is a little slower and not rushed sounding. More dynamics between the band here too. Plus "Kalimba Story" is almost too good! When the guitar comes in during the drum break..look out..they start throwin down. I recommend this to any EWF fan. This is before they became real huge and crossed over more. And this is the way it would have sounded, no effects, overdubs, etc. Check it out!

2 out of 5 stars not up to Maurices' standards..........2003-08-31

This disc is recommended only for the hardcore fan. Columbia released this I'm sure without the blessing of Maurice. This cd is the sound of a band in development...wavering tempos, sloppy playing, amateurish and unrefined. I'm a BIG EWF fan, but no way can I recommend this cd just because I love the group. For a tight sound and great improvisational playing, I suggest 1980's recording "Live in Rio" released in 2002. For great sound but no horns - try "Greatest Hits Live" recorded in Tokyo in 1996 with Maurice. (His last tour, I believe. Graditude is also a more polished effort than Live in 75' and recorded only six months later

5 out of 5 stars Outshines "Gratitude"'s Live Content.......2003-07-23

On a whole "Gratitude" with it's studio tracks is a better buy. But the live performance rises a few degrees higher than "Gratitude". If you really want to show off EWF- play this jam for your friends.

5 out of 5 stars You'll never know how good they were.......2005-10-04

Earth Wind and Fire are still around. Maurice still sings with the group, Philip is the lead on tour, Verdine is still crazy, and Ralph still brings it together.
This album, released in 2002, reminds longtime fans of how well EWF performed live. This group really knew hot to perform at a level that far exceeded what you heard on vinyl. The best portions of the CD are those when the band is absolutely jamming like in "Getaway" and "Rock That". One of the biggest surprises was the reworking of "Serpentine Fire". At first I didn't dig it, but after the 2nd and 3rd listen, it became my second favorite behind "Getaway." I must say, it was great to hear "September" live, and hear the crowd really respond to it. It's a great song. This is must-buy for a collector, and for a starter, I dont' think you can appreciate it unless you have delved into the catalogue of music (avoid the compliations and get the original albums/cds so you can see how it was all put together. It's something special.). This is clearly the second greatest live album by EWF behind Gratitude.

5 out of 5 stars No Other Band Has This Much Power!.......2005-09-24

The first time I heard this CD, I was immediately hooked! To truly appreciate this show, you've gotta listen to it on a good Digital Audio System. You can feel the joy in this performance. It's so powerful, it moves me emotionally!!! Earth, Wind & Fire's music and The Phenix Horns have always touched my heart. I want to meet Maurice White one day, give him a big hug and thank him personally for sharing his gift of EWF with me and the entire world!!!! My eyes are tearing up already!!!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BAND EVER, IN THEIR PRIME!!!.......2005-05-13

Earth Wind & Fire Live, and in their prime! This is all an EWF
fanatic like me has to hear! This live concert is PHENOMENAL!
Maurice, Philip, the Pheonix horns, all at the peak, of
perfection! The only thing that could top this, is having this
concert on dvd! Soon I hope! Make yourself very happy, buy this
fantastic EWF live concert, ASAP!

4 out of 5 stars Solid performance with lots of energy..........2005-05-04

This is a recently released EW&F CD that was recorded live in Brazil when they were at their commercial peak in 1980. There is lots of energy here and the band is 16 members strong including The Phenix Horns just before they jumped ship and joined Phil Collins' band. Solid 15 song concert with my two favorite tracks being "Serpentine Fire" and "Fantasy" with Philip Bailey hitting those amazingly high notes.

5 out of 5 stars HELL YEAH!!.......2004-05-24

Great live album!! WOW! This was in 1980 when all the original members were still in the band, Larry Dunn and the great Don Myrick (R.I.P.). When you listen to this album it REALLY makes all the current R&B sound awful. This was time when the music and musicianship mattered the most. Great arrangements of Magic Mind and Runnin'.

4 out of 5 stars this is rough and tough.......2007-01-30

This is great funk that was pressed on funk 45's... in 2001?! Yep. If you like your funk heavy and rough, this has got more grit than 80-grade sandpaper...

4 out of 5 stars Just so you know!!!.......2002-01-16

These tracks are NOT rereleases but infact (mainly) NEW bands recording in a deep funk style, that is to say that they record everything with analogue equipment for a nice authentic (and tough) sound.

My pick is Speedometer from the UK. Ouch, those beats rock!!!

Now you're interested in this kind of stuff, check out thes record labels, Daptone Records, Stark Reality, Desco (now defunct but still available),Deep Funk (keb Darges label).

My tip for new bands to check out are The NewMastersounds, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings,Kokolo, Sharon Jackson and the Soul Destroyers,Charles Bradley,The Poets Of Rythm and Imaginary Visions.

Oh and Grazing in the Trash Vol 2 is out as of now, pick it up and play it in the cut!!

5 out of 5 stars God bless Soul Fire!.......2001-09-25

Take note beatheads, diggers, b-boys, wrist mechanics, etc....this is it!

General rule of thumb = Soul Fire can do no wrong. If you see it, get it. All Soul Fire 45's are re-issues that are only limited to 1000 copies. I own most of these 45's, but when I saw this collection on vinyl, I had to pick it up. Glad to see (somewhat) that it is on cd as well, because that'll get it in the hands of some more people.

In short, this lp just drips with funk. It oozes it. It pours it. You get the vibe. Of particular brilliance are the tracks by Lee Fields, Calypso King, and JD. Literally unbelievable stuff.

Definitely get this one. This brings back the whole Brainfreeze tracks that DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist did in the way back.

If you're diggin this whole vibe, look for the releases by the Stones Throw label here in S.F. They are repressing some old 45's as well, most noteable being the Highlighter's "Poppin' Popcorn" 45.

Also, check out the full length by Calypso King on the Soul Fire label. Other items to look for can be found at the Stones Throw front: the Yesterday's New Quintet release and the "Funky Sixteen Corners" release.

And, if you're diggin the 45 vibe, aside from Soul Fire, look for anything put out by the Lenar label. Their release of Bama and the Family's "Don't think...do" is unbelievable. It's backed with a version of James Brown's "Get up in your hot pants" that simply won't quit.

Again, don't hesitate on this one, get it. Just like Bama and the Family, "Don't think, do." To almost be blasphemous, it makes Lonnie Linston Smith, Jimmy Smith, JB's, Curtis Mayfield, etc...sound like the Lawerence Welk musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Funky, Funky, Funky.......2001-06-06

This collection of extremely rare 45s re-released by the Soul Fire label is a must-buy -- beat junkies and those who like their funk rough will go ga-ga. Though every song is a gem, of special interest to loop diggers are the intrumental (and oh-so-samplable) "Just Some More Haaa-Sheesh" and the aptly-titled "Beats 1 thru 11" track from the "Soul Fire Educational" single. The A and B sides to seven singles are included, from the likes of Calypso King & the Soul Investigators, Speedometer, JD & the Evil's Dynamite Band, Lee Field & the Explorers, Third Point, and the Soul Command. You may not have heard of a single one of 'em, but you'll be glad you did. 5K.

5 out of 5 stars At least one of the best dub CDs ever.......2006-09-08

It's hard to say which dub album I'd pick as the best but this is one of them. My favorite track is "Great Stone," the dub version of Prince Alla's "Stone," with it incredibly driving rhythm. This CD is a must for any serious listener of reggae/dub or popular music in general.

Long Live The Great King Tubby.

    5 out of 5 stars Whoa.......2004-02-12

Well, I don't know if I woul go so far as to declare this the greatest dub album of all time, however I will gladly concede it is number two*. Do not sleep on this disc however, King Tubby, as you probably already know, is regarded as the godfather of Dub. It is nice to also have a collection of all Soul Syndicate tracks.

*- for those wondering, my absolute favorite dub album of all time is the King Tubby produced Cornell Campbell - I Shall Not Remove 1975-1980, both albums come with my highest recommendation.

    5 out of 5 stars révolutionnaire.......2003-06-14

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best dub album ever.......2003-04-02

There are simply no questions to be asked. If your taste includes heavy rootsy dub, with megatons of bass and reverb, vocals coming and going like ghosts of some long dead jamaican freedom fighter, this is the album for you. It features dub cuts of famous songs from the Freedom Sounds label, with artists like Prince Alla, Rod Taylor, Earl Zero and more.

No reggae collection can be without this. Also serves as a great introduction to dub music for people who have not yet had a chance to enjoy the fruits of this wonderful genre.

    Peace to Zion!

The real roots reggae dubwise from the ghetto mixed by the inventor of Dub King Tubby the Almighty himself! If you love positive vibrations you MUST have this LP! Enjoy! Play it loud with a high bass for your neighbour's pleasure!!!

Rhythmatism and Summer Strut are incredibly dance-oriented tracks. You Are The Song features an amazing female vocalist (Googie Coppola). The Munich tracks are much less vibrant although Birdwalk is a very haunting track.

Of the dozen musicians who made up Earth, Wind & Fire and its horn section during the funk band's glory days in the '70s, only four appear on their 1997 album, In the Name of Love. On hand, however, are the three crucial figures--lead singers Philip Bailey and Maurice White, and bassist Verdine White. Bailey and/or the White brothers cowrote eight of the songs, and Maurice produced the whole project. Moreover, the band has largely forsaken its ill-fated late-'80s attempts to update its sound with new-jack moves and has returned to its classic horn-driven funk grooves of the '70s. The result is the best EW&F release in 16 years.

With one harmless exception, the band avoids the sort of political sloganeering and vague spiritualism that made its lyrics so embarrassing in the past, and sticks to the proven themes of dancing and romancing. But what really makes the album so appealing are the juicy chorus melodies that the lead singers and their collaborators have come up with. These refrains are so catchy that you want to sing along, and they're so firmly anchored to the syncopated grooves that you'll want to dance along as well. Most of those beats are built atop programmed drum tracks, but live drummers add secondary patterns that give the arrangements the cross-rhythms this group was once famous for. On uptempo numbers such as "Keep It Real" and the title track, Maurice White's lead vocals engage the horns in a heady call-and-response dialogue. On the slower romantic ballads, such as "When Love Goes Wrong" and "Cruising," Bailey's impossibly high tenor sounds as if it's in a permanent swoon. If there were still a market for this sort of old-school funk, these songs would all become hits. --Geoffrey Himes

    4 out of 5 stars A Solid Followup To 1993's 'Millenium.......2006-09-16

After EWF satisfied their Japanese fanbase with 'Avatar' (1996), they altered that CD's original tracklisting, and included 'When Love Goes Wrong' on the American edition of 'Avatar' titled 'In The Name Of Love' (1997).

With 'In The Name Of Love', EWF released a solid followup (or continuation!) to 1993's vastly underrated 'Millenium'. This 11 track CD sounds contemporary and retro at the same time, featuring productions utilizing full horn sections on ballads ('Cruising'), and guest raps that complemented the vocals on 'Revolution (Just Evolution)'. For the most part, Maurice White's production is VERY good, up to his 70's tricks of using link tracks and interludes to shift moods, and dropping in loud electric guitar when you least expect it (the heavy funk 'Rock It'). 'When Love Goes Wrong' sounds like it was originally slated to be on Philip Bailey's solo CD, but it found a home on this project because 3 solid tracks from 'Avatar' ('Change Your Mind', 'Take You To Heaven', and 'Bahia') weren't included (for some $$$ reasoning..Hmmm!!).

The music on both 'Avatar' & 'In The Name Of Love' is mostly catchy but never monumental like the EWF's classic era from the 1970's, but the group displays their sense of fun, and for a moment, they reverted to their past attempts to sound hip & street (the opening track 'Keep It Real' for example). Still, even with that song, EWF is to be commended for the solid tracks & great musicianship. [NOTE - In 2006, Kalimba Records plans to reissue 'In The Name Of Love', with the 3 tracks that were once exclusive to 'Avatar'!!]
    Enjoy

In the name of love Is a great cd very tight I brought It on amazon.com just for cruising I thought keep It real was allright after reading the reviews on amazon I gave every cut a listen cut no 6 Im ready Is one of the best love songs I've ever heard a very pretty song cut no 7 round and round Is a smooth midtempo groove with vocals and guitar work as tight as It gets cut no 2
Is the high energy uptempo jam you have to hear more than once cut no 3 revolution Is a very good follow up and keeps the energy going no 9 cruising Is one of the greatist smooth flowing songs you'll never hear on the radio, keep It real has grown on me great vocals the reviews are right a great cd like this unknown and never getting any radio play makes no sense.

5 out of 5 stars Why was this CD "ever" Promoted?!!.......2005-10-07

I brought this cd because I just happened to see it online and I thought I give it a play, being a HUGE Earth, Wind, & Fire fan! The CD is "Fantastic"! Even though it came out in '97 but still. The songs are gems. My favorites are: In the Name Of Love; Revolution; When Love Goes Wrong (Phillip never ceases to amazes me); Round and Round (Sheldon Renolds is a good vocalist in his own right) Keep it Real; Crusing; and Love is Life (Maurice sounds good on that track) Avatar should have been longer than 2:09 minutes. The Record Industry "SUCKS!!" They rely on "gemics" rather than true "Art!" That Cd is true art. Songs are beautifully written, strong positive messages, great arrangements with the famous EW&F Horns, and Great Production all the way around! This CD should have goten some airplay! If we have more music like this on the radio, I wouldn't be disgruntled as I am now. Good Music is being replaced by Gemic Garbage. I hope one day that will changed!

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2002-01-06

This album should have been heavily promoted. It is one of the greatest EWF albums ever produced. I have been a fan of EWF since there was an EWF; I had all their music except this album. I was completely blown away by the power of these "new" songs. The music is exceptional and the lyrics have so much to say. No one does romantic songs better than EWF and, boy, do they meet that promise on this album. When the lights are low, listen to "When Love Goes Wrong," "Fill You Up," and "Keep It Real." I really wish music afficionados would recognize the heavy influence of contemporary jazz in their music. I believe this is one reason the group has been overlooked in recent years, with the exception of a few contemporary jazz radio stations who have their act together.

If you have ever experienced Earth Wind and Fire, please buy this album. You won't be disappointed, this is a true gem.

5 out of 5 stars Age has not "dulled" the musical sensation known as EWF.......2000-10-16

Like reviewer Mistermaxx said earlier, it is puzzling why this album did not take off. Earth, Wind, & Fire's brilliance has never been better on this 11-song set.

The strongest cuts are the rocking "Revolution," the poetic "When Love Goes Wrong," the sultry "Fill You Up," the seductive "Round and Round," the dreamy "Cruising" and "Love is Life" which harkens back to EWF's heyday.

With the abundance of "boy bands" populating the airwaves, it is refreshing to hear some real sounds from a mature group.
