Douglas is a defining modern example of the musician who looks at the big picture: composition and improvisation in the melting pot with texture, line, form, and substance. He tinkers with the detail of it all, looking to see what a career's worth of this every-which-way strategy will yield.

Convergence is by the quintet that has already done two excellent Soul Notes, the "string band" that has violinist Mark Dresser, cellist Erik Friedlander, and bassist Drew Gress matching timbres with the leader's squirrelly trumpet. At the back, Michael Sarin drums attentively.

Line by line, it presents fascinating and intensely ambitious music that required the players to sweat. The four-way fantasy on the blues called "Meeting at Infinity" starts as somber and deadpan as you like, but the joyous choruses that Douglas climaxes it with should dispel fears that this is too deadly serious. "Goodbye Tony" is a fittingly big and incident-packed tribute to late drummer Williams - but zeroes in on the master's compositional acumen rather than his rhythm innovations. And so it goes, through a total of 13 pieces. Even a fragment like the opening dash through a Burmese folk song is as polished as it is full-tilt.

Indeed this may be the disc's undoing for many. No gainsaying the prowess of Douglas and his men, but there are moments - in a 72-minute album - where the sheer braininess of it all can seem more like a tough examination of the listener's receptive faculties than a jazz-based essay on new musical

possibilities.

Very Challenging Record.......2007-05-09

It begins with a rendition of a Burmese folk song, moves to a lengthy, somewhat dissonant piece called Meeting at Infinity, moves to a beautiful Kurt Weill piece and a Messiaen piece . . . well, you probably get the picture. At some level it explores and smashes the boundaries of Classical Music and Jazz. Its pleasure is not the visceral beat-bound pleasure that you get from listening to a lot of music, where the energy is in the beat and the exhilaration . . . rather, the pleasure, and it is almost exhilarating, is the sheer intellectual depth of this music and how demanding of a listen this is. It literally took me three days to get through this record the first time, partly because my wife complained about how much she hated it, but also because it is exhausting to listen to.

What is really remarkable about this, and it is something that I have never heard before, is Douglas' trumpet playing set against a string trio. Very unusual and not like jazz as you might expect it.

I would say to anyone who is interested in music that this is a great record to buy. You may not ever love it, but I think you will keep coming back to it again and again and finding new discoveries. I plan on buying a few more Douglas records, if only to annoy my family.! :)

Think Kronos and Berne!.......2000-11-25

Well -I would be the first to admit that I don't know an awful lot about Dave Douglas. But I have this CD, and it's pretty wild. Think Kronos Quartet with a bit of Tim Berne thrown in. There are moments of melody here, but with this line up you never quite know where the music is going to go. The liner notes make special mention that Douglas wants everyone to kow that this is an album make by five musicians. So let me mention them here - it's a good idea, because you can get an idea of what to expect: Mark Feldman (violin), Erik Friedlander (cello), Drew Gress (bass), and Michael Sarin (Drums.) And of course, Mr. Douglas with his trumpet.

This thing stretches out (72:07 in length) and flies in all directions. In some tracks we're looking at dissonant ranting (opening track being an example) while at other times they take their time to impress a melody, and not to fill every single space with a note.

I'm not going to say BUY THIS, BUY THIS here. It wouldn't be appropriate for this kind of disc. The fact is, when you're ready to spend time with something new - something different - something that will challenge you nine ways to Sunday - then go pick this one up. I can't imagine 50 years of listening to this would get you to the bottom of it.

Another Great Dave Douglas CD!.......2000-01-06

The prolific Douglas scores again with this, his third recording with his string group. Douglas is a master of utilizing unusual combinations of instruments. The string group is comprised of Trumpet, Violin, Cello, Bass and Drums. (His Tiny Bell Trio consist of Trumpet, Guitar and Drums) While the group does tackle a classical piece, a Messian composition originally for organ, there is no mistaking this for anything but jazz. Though I prefer "Five" this is still amust have cd.

Amazing!.......1999-07-23

This is the Dave Douglas 'Five' in top form...a step up (which I didn't think was possible) from the first album, 'Five.' The compositions on this album are of a greater depth and the playing by each individual in the group is so 'honed-in' it leaves me floored. 'Farewell Tony' is definitely the expressive climax on the whole disc..Dave's solo is ridiculously superb...inspired....a more than fitting tribute to Tony Williams. One of the best albums I have heard in a long, long time!

I hoped for more that I got........2005-12-03

I first heard Christine Kane in 1997. It was a small concert venue, and she was really inspiring -- both her lyrics and her stage personality. I still love my autographed copy of "A Thousand Girls."

But I have been so disappointed with her two most recent albums. The music keeps getting more sophisticated and beautiful. The lyrics are stuck, thematically and emotionally, in the same place they were in 1997. As a result, this music no longer sounds fresh to me, and no longer inspires.

I bought Right Outta Nowhere hoping that R&M&W&G was just an anomaly. From the opening lines of the first track, I thought, "It's another Christine Kane song about a woman trying to get away from the oppressive expectations of her family so she can be true to herself." Maybe this is unfair. After all, how many songs are there about there about people having been left by their loves, or finding true love, or regretting lost opportunities, or whatever? But there seems to be a deeper rut here. "Four Legs Good Two Legs Bad" is fun, but the cat hair in the tofu seems an awful lot like it's been sitting around since it did its duty in the kitchen on "(No Such Thing As) Girls Like That" on R&M&W&G.

So, in all, I'm disappointed. From the one live track on Right Outta Nowhere, I think I would still really enjoy seeing Christine in concert. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to matter a whole lot what's on the playlist.

This album is profound and inspiring. I stumbled into a performance by Christine in Fairfax, VA and bought the CD. I love it! The lyrics put into the words many of the feelings and thoughts I have. The CD will inspire you to take a chance and the leap of faith you have been wanting or needing to take.

and I say that because of the influence her music is having on people's lives. Not only is the music beautiful, but it's written with the purpose of serving others. You're bound to feel refreshed/empowered after meditating on the lyrics of "Right Outta Nowhere", "Overjoyed", and "Made of Steel".

Buy both of her albums and back up copies to spare. Chances are you'll let a friend borrow it and they won't give it back!

If you are going to buy one album this year, this is the one! (And if you're going to buy two, get Christine's last album, Rain and Mud and Wild and Green, if you don't already have it...) Christine's music speaks of all the world's greatest beauty, and serves as a revival for everyone who values friendships, earth, animals and the importance of a good deed. Her unique blend of humor and contemplation can let the average person know they are making a difference in the world, simply by following their heart and doing what is right. On top of that, she is a knockout singer/musician and this album showcases her most subtly sophisticated songwriting arrangements to date. You won't regret owning an album from this songwriter who is quickly making a name for herself.

Homegrown Hippy Harmonica.......2007-06-04

You gotta really love the harmonica to be happy with this CD. I've tried it twice now, but can't get through it. It's not bad, I just can't get through the harmonica and violin to get to the groove. I'd heard a couple of songs from him before buying this that had a quirky, groovy feel to them, that I thought would take me to the acoustic crossover between buzzland and hometown organic. A rare place to go I can tell you, but neccessary once in a while. Anyway, I'm going to keep looking for the right time to try it again so I can hopefully appreciate it. But until I can find it, my advice is to buy it only if you love the sound of a harmonica.

Utter Guitar Brilliance.......2007-01-28

This is the first (of two) solo albums by guitar virtuoso James Murphy. Although James has been in a few extreme Metal bands, the albums I have of his catalog are his two masterpieces from Testament, which are "Low" and "The Gathering". As well, I have seen him once live from each of those tours. From those situations and recordings alone he is one of my favorite guitar players.

This album is basically a mix of instrumental and vocal songs, fairly split between the two types. Some of the personnel on this album are vocalists Chuck Billy (Testament) on one song and Devin Townsend (Ocean Machine, Strapping Young Lad) on two songs, as well as current Journey drummer Deen Castronova. This is a varied and professional Metal album that can appeal to various types of fans of the genre. James' guitarwork can easily stand up to anyone else that has ever picked up the six-string. Amazing shred-work as well as some extremely well-written and catchy songs, especially one of the absolute GREATEST songs you will EVER hear, which is "Touching The Earth" with Billy on vox. This is a brilliant, mesmerizing and haunting 7 minute + song, completely an utter piece of musical accomplishment.

This CD is a MUST BUY if you are a fan of Metal and amazing guitar playing. It's really that simple.

James is a complete musician!.......2004-10-27

Honestly, I have never heard any of Jame's stuff with any of the thrash bands that he was in. I initially heard James on the Rush Tribute album, Working Man. He did some great solos on that one, so I decided to check him out. This album is about half vocal, half instrumental. His intrumentals are awesome. The rhythms are heavy, and the solo work is clean and impressive.
Visions is my favorite instrumental. The vocal songs are awesome. James brings in some very good singers, which compliment his writing style. Touching the Earth and Deeper Within are great tunes. This album shows that James can do his own thing, and do it well. Highly Recommended!!!

This is nothing but crazed, chaotic, demonic noise disguised as music. This takes the gift of music given to us by God and turns it into something nasty and perverted. Guard your heart and stay away from this one please!!!

Murphy is god! I have several albums featuring Murphy on guitar. He has been in Death(Spiritual Healing, Testament(Low,Live at the Filmore,The Gathering), Disincarnate(Dreams of the Carrion Kind), Konkhra(Weed Out the Week), and more. His fluid and exquisite playing has reached is zenith on the 2 solo albums he has put out (this one and Feeding the Machine-1999). I bought Convergence a year and a half ago, and it hasn't come out of my disc changer yet. Simply remarkable...Best songs-Vision and Shadow's Fall.

James Murphy, from Death to Obituary to Testament, even the obscure but magnificent Explorers' Club... a flawless guitarist! About a nine on the shred scale, with a completely excellent blend of acoustic and electric guitars on songs like "Touching the Earth," dedicated in memory of Murphy's grandfather and featuring Chuck Billy on vocals, and Tempus Omnia Revelat to close the album... unbelievable technique and emotion. Don't wait, just scoop this one up!

One of the Best Big Band Jazz CDs of '03.......2004-01-20

For years, Phil Kelly has been a jazz educator and somewhat behind-the-scenes composer for film soundtracks. He has also been involved in the jazz world, having played drums for Sy Zentner and contributing charts to the Tonight Show Band and Bill Watrous' Refuge Big Bands. He has a well deserved reputation among musicians as an arranger whose charts they love to play.

Kelly moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1998 and put together a band consisting of the top musicians in that area. Finally, in August 2003, the NW Prevailing Winds (with guests Pete Christlieb, Gary Smulyan and Andy Martin aboard) recorded "Convergence Zone." Both the band and the performance are outstanding. This is defintely one of the top big band jazz albums of 2003. Certainly, it is one of the best recorded big band jazz albums I have heard in a long time. Many of today's big band recordings have great clarity but lack presence and dynamics. But this recording has plenty of "up-front" presence. The sectional work and the dynamics are captured perfectly. Listen, for example, to the brass swells on the opening "Damp Brown Places" and you will be applauding not only the music but the superb engineering job.

Among the many strengths of this CD is its variety. Kelly loves to have the band swing and it does so in many grooves here. Listen, for example, to "Damp Brown Places" "Subzatoot Shuffle" "Sweet Georgia Upside Down" (also recorded by Watrous), "You and the Night and the Music", "Yada Yada", and the uptempo Basie-like "OTBS" (featuring a parade of soloists), for an idea of how this band can swing hard in a pure jazz groove. Kelly voices the sax solis in a most interesting way. PK does a beautiful job with the ballads, too. "Bella Luce" is John LaBarbera's moving tribute to Conte Candoli, played in a heartfelt way by trumpeter Jay Thomas. Kathy's Waltz is Kelly's tribute to his late wife, featuring the tender but strong alto of Bill Ramsay. Both these ballads feature some very tasteful string programming. "Cuzn Bubba Luvz Ewe" and "The Refrigerator" are funky, greasy pieces played over rhythms laid down by a crack Nashville rhythm section. The jazz listener should not be put off by these tracks at all, as they are full of jazz content, blues licks, strong solos, and very tight ensemble playing. These latter pieces fit the album perfectly. Kelly's arrangements and compositions are more straightforward than say, Bob Florence's and Maria Schneider's, and thus easier to grasp on first listening. Yet there is plenty of musical meat here which rewards repeated listening.

The soloists grab the listener's attention, as well. Tenor Christlieb and trumpeter Thomas star all over this album. Smulyan and Martin solo, too, though there is no lack of solo strength among the regular band members. Ramsay and trombonist Dan Marcus are especially outstanding, along with fine solos from pianists John Hansen and Pat Coil(on the funk tracks), trombonist Gary Shutes, saxophonists Travis Ranney and Jim Coile, and trumpeter Vern Seilert. Special mention should be made of drummer Gary Hobbs who anchors the band on the jazz tracks and the ballads (Paul Leim is the drummer in the Nashville rhythm section). One veteran big band observer recently called Hobbs the best big band drummer in North America. Well, on the basis of this performance, there is no doubt that he has to be considered for the title. Everything Hobbs does, the swing, the accents, the power, the dynamics, is just perfect. He was fine on the Stan Kenton band, but he has developed over the years into a monster big band drummer.

"Convergence Zone" is a wonderful big band jazz CD, which should be purchased without hestation by anyone who loves the art.

This CD presents a fine selection of music by Chris Brubeck, son of jazz great Dave Brubeck and quite a good composer/musician himself. Though entirely jazz- and pop-influenced, the varied program would not be out of place in the concert hall, and indeed, "Convergence" was commissioned by the Boston Pops. It is a three-movement, 15-minute piece, beginning with great drama, with a languorous middle movement with dark string tones that then turns into a jaunty, faraway Dixieland March. It's not a challenging piece, but it keeps surprising. The second work is a series of six songs, five based on poems by children on the theme of nature, specifically, water, and one by e e cummings. It's a wonderful cycle (Frederica von Stade, who sings some of the songs, commissioned the work). One song features a piano ostinato, another is jazzy and fun with high coloratura (sung by Rachel Luxon); another features a jazz piano solo and slide trombone accents. The last work is the "Prague" Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra, and it's a fine workout for that instrument and vastly entertaining to boot. The Czech Natinal Symphony Orchestra play handsomely under Paul Freeman. Is this CD "crossover?" I don't know, but I'm going to listen to it often. --Robert Levine

This disc is awesome!.......2005-12-16

Firstly, I need to note that this disc CAN be played on any CD player - it is a hybrid SACD, meaning it has a layer of standard CD material, and a layer of surround sound material. If you have the chance to hear this disc in surround, it is an exciting experience - Chris Brubeck writes for not only the orchestra on stage, but also smaller ensembles in balconies and marching bands moving through the hall and off stage. The surround listening experience imitates these effects incredibly well - one can close his eyes and hear the marching band moving from side to side, back to front, etc. The experience of listening to this disc in standard CD stereo form is no less exciting, just without the impression of movement throughout the orchestral parts.

Brubeck's compositional style is edging on a new American sound - he mixes his talents as a classical composer, orchestrator and performer (he is a conservatory trained trombone player - check out his monster performance on the Prague Concerto on this disc!) with his experiences as a jazz composer/performer (having played with his father Dave, and his own jazz and folk groups over the years), and creates a sound world that bridges both worlds so comfortably. I'm always waiting to see what this composer comes up with next!

This disc is wholeheartedly recommended.

Convergence is Spectacular.......2005-12-10

In May 2001, my wife and I heard the second performance of Convergence: A Concerto for Pops Orchestra, by Chris Brubeck (world premiere was the night before) at the Boston Pops with Keith Lockhart. Ever since then, we have been waiting anxiously for a recording to come out. Here it is! The only thing that exceeds this CD is to see the performance live. Musicians play from the balcony, and back stage, an effect that can't quite be captured on the CD. The CD is spectacular; not only containing Convergence but also River of Song, and Prague Concerto for Bass Trombone, both remarkable compositions. Chris has inherited the genes from his dad, Dave Brubeck and Chris is a talented classical/jazz composer. You will love this CD if you are a fan of the Brubeck family.

Convergence ~ Front Line Assembly.......2005-04-30

Convergence is not really and album but many previous albums that have been compiled into one recording. They took disorder, corrosion and some unreleased tracks and mixed them together and came up with this great record. I also have corroded disorder which is a digital touchup of the songs and is a compilation with these albums on it. I love this kind of music so I did not mind at all. The artwork on this earlier compilation is shoddy and looks cheap. Even so it is a very nice early compilation from FLA.

Who'd a thought it?.......2007-05-11

Now who would think an album named "Convergence" was actually a mediocre mini collection of songs from two individual artists on one disc? The misleading title made me think that perhaps the two artists had sat down together, conspired and performed each song together which would have made for a very unique combining of energies and talents. Each artist is a five star musician and David is a five star personal friend of mine but it easy to see that the Narada big wigs had their hand in this pot and while most of the songs are five stars, the overall effect is anti-climatic so I can only give it four stars. The songs Narada chose to place on this CD are not even the best works from each artist but being the true Lanz / Arkenstone fan that I am, I had to add the CD to my collection even though I own all the CDs these songs came from. Even if I was misled by the title, the music is nonetheless just as great if you don't mind having sort of a half of a "almost best of" collection from two artists.

A nice sampling of 2 great artists............2007-01-29

This cd is recommended as a nice sampling of the works of 2 of the leading new age artists. It has a good variety of tracks. Arkenstone uses more synthesizers and crescendos, while Lanz is predominantly piano, with orchestration, and more laid back. The cello piece is unbelievable!!! Try it - you may get hooked!

AN AWESOME DIVERSE MASTERPIECE.......2003-01-26

David Lanz's and David Arkenstone's "Convergence" is truly a remarkable piece of music. What is so great is that it is very diverse, meaning there are a variety of songs with different styles to listen to, but at the same time they all go together. I do not know how these two musical geniuses made an album as such, but it is truly awesome. "The Dragon's Daughter" is such an awesome song. Paul Speer, a guitar extraordinaire, collaborates with David Lanz on this song. The guitar and piano together on this song makes it one of the driving forces in this CD. "The Cello's Song" by David Arkenstone, is an amazing, serious, and beautiful song. The cello sounds absolutely amazing. It is the Cello's song. "Madre de la Tierra" by David Lanz is one of my all time favorite David Lanz songs. This song opens the CD and it is David on the piano with an entire orchestra to back him up. This song is a masterpiece and is one of the prettiest and most moving songs any person will come across these days. Way to go David Lanz and David Arkenstone! If you love music, I know you will love "Convergence"!

Not that impressed.......2000-01-11

I was really disappointed with this album, infact, I would really like to send it back and get something different if I could. While it was playing my husband said, "What in the world do you have playing on the stereo, groan.......

Get aquainted with two fine artists for the price of one........1999-02-05

I bought this for the Arkenstone cuts, and at first listen was underwhelmed by Lanz (piano often bores me) as represented by "Madre de la Tierra" and "Madrona," but his "Oaks" is my favorite cut on the entire album, probably because of its solid medieval dance base: a beautiful interplay of the three instruments. Arkenstone's "The Cello's Song" is lushly romantic (I like Russian composers like Prokoviev and Ravell), as is "Love on the Beach." Everything here is solidly good, some superb; my ear just has its own prejudices, which you may share. Definitely worth a listen.
