Art Pepper made a name for himself in the early 1950s as a West Coast alto saxophonist who could play the complex harmonies of bop, but was not a slavish imitator of Charlie Parker. Pepper's intelligently-structured soloing was the epitome of California cool. Modern Art, recorded after he had served time in jail on drug charges, is a reissue of 1956 and 1957 sessions recorded for Alladin with either Russ Freeman or Carl Perkins on piano, Ben Tucker on bass, and Chuck Flores on drums. "Blues In" opens the session with a fine example of Pepper's soloing style. The swing classic "Stompin' at the Savoy" is an unbridled joy. "Cool Bunny," the two takes of "Diane's Dilemma," and alternate takes of "Fascinating Rhythm" and "Begin the Beguine" are other highlights. --John Swenson
Customer Reviews:
Art Pepper at his best.......2007-05-26
If you like the dreamy, smoothe style of Art Pepper, don't miss this one. I am now searching for Volume one, but so far, no luck.
Masterpiece.......2007-04-28
Pepper here is light years ahead of most in the business at the time. All you need to do is listen to his cover of SUMMERTIME and you'll see. It's probably one of jazz's most unrecognized masterpieces. His duets with Tucker are also far ahead of time. Pure pleasure, Modern Art.
One of the best jazz albums.......2005-03-21
I own hundreds of jazz cd's, and sometimes someone wants to know if I have a favorite. I can't say I have one favorite, but this is up there in the top 5. I recommend this CD to any serious jazz fan who somehow has overlooked one of the most talented sax players ever, anyone interested in "cool" jazz, anyone trying out jazz for the first time, and any jazz musician looking to hear some inspiring solo work. It's a true album, where every track belongs, and it plays well, in order, from start to finish, over and over again.
Consummate West Coast Cool Jazz.......2000-09-06
The cover can tell you a lot about this CD. I think the photograph exactly typifies a time, a life-style, a mood. This is the late-Fifties West Coast jazz world we're in. A good-looking young man dressed in a sharp suit, white shirt and understated tie, sits at a table with his faithful saxophone at his elbow, an abstract painting hanging on the wall behind him. His expression is a mixture of cool, detached concentration, with maybe just a hint of the assured, almost surly, "who-gives-a-s**t" rebel. I don't know who took this photograph or whether others from the same session were ever used, but it is an image that I think matches the music to perfection. It seems unfair to single out a track for special mention - the whole mood of the album just cruises along at a very high standard. It sounds like a bunch of musicians who are just enjoying themselves, confident they are excelling at their craft on the day. "Hey guys, we're good, and we don't care who knows it." The only minor negative I would offer is the recording sound. This isn't hi-fi demonstration material. If you're a real hi-fi enthusiast it may seem a bit shallow and with slightly unnatural tones to some of the instruments. However, it is clean and dynamic, and the tracks are played with such enthusiasm and ability that the quality of the music shines through. This is great listening and thoroughly recommended.
Great Album.......1999-11-16
this is a wonderful album, my first venture into Art Pepper and I can't get enough! For those still new to Jazz, this is a great album to get your feet wet with.

Customer Reviews:
Bea Wain's Impeccable and Sophisticated Swing.......2002-05-02
This Canadian collection is absolutely wonderful, largely due to to Beatrice Wain's wonderful voice. All 24 tracks are musical gems of gentle and sophisticated swing. The material is culled from Miss Wain's first solo recordings (after an extremely successful stint singing with Larry Clinton and his Orchestra). Miss Wain's delivery and timing show an inherent jazziness akin to that of Ella Fitzgerald (check out "Make With the Kisses"), but her earthy and wonderfully natural tone (with a slight New York accent) are uniquely her own, and set Miss Wain apart from her contemporaries. Her phrasing is perfect with a constant focus on the integrity of the lyric and melody. Her vocal embellishments are incredibly effective because of their rarity, and never dominate or derail the performance. The result is 100% gentle swinging perfection: cool, elegant and wonderful. The quality of these recordings is excellent throughout. They have been copied from vinyl and not shellac 78's whenever possible. Some stand-out tracks are Cole Porter's "Make It Another Old Fashioned, Please", "I'm Nobody's Baby", "How Did He Look" and "My Sister and I". This is top notch material which compares to early Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald, and a must for anyone interested in Big Band or Jazz vocal music. I, for one, anxiously await vol. 2 which is supposed to include some new recordings from this wonderful singer. Brava, Beatrice.
Wonderful La Wain!.......2002-03-07
A marvelous reissue with exceptional sound, liner notes and photos. Ms. Wain is one of the best lady singers to come out of the 30s, and this disc proves it. A very distinctive vocal style -- jazz-oriented with a charming New York accent. Kudos to producer Ted Ono for bringing these sensational recordings back in print!
There is also a promise of a Volume 2, and new recordings by Miss Bea herself!

Album Description
The Complete Caruso: Volumes 1 - 12
The Italian tenor Enrico Caruso holds a unique place in musical history, as the first operatic singer whose recordings sold in millions, and who created an international reputation on the strength of these. Caruso's robust tone and musical sincerity made him both an ideal stage and recording artist, whose voice the primitive acoustic recording technology of the early twentieth century was able to reproduce with startling fidelity. The Naxos Historical Caruso edition constitutes the complete cycle of all Caruso's recordings issued in chronological order. In addition, the transfers have been immaculately undertaken by top sound engineer Ward Marston, unrivalled for his knowledge of the specialized world of acoustic opera recordings, and his rare ability to retrieve all of the music lying in the grooves of the original recordings. Naxos Historical's incredible price (12 CD'S FOR THE PRICE OF 10) puts this unique legacy of great singing within the reach of all music-lovers. This! complete cycle of recordings represents a major document in the history of sound recording, and one which no collector and enthusiast of great singing will wish to be without. "There is no series of vocal records that have a greater documentary value, that meant more to the development of the phonograph record, or that are as consistently capable of providing pleasure to lovers of great singing. ...One of the most significant recording industry events of the decade." Fanfare
Customer Reviews:
Get It While You Can.......2006-10-13
This may not be easy to get in the USA for very long.....don't miss it.
Essential edition for opera lovers.......2005-02-01
This set gives you the opportunity to follow the entire recording career of one of the greatest singers in Operatic History. Enrico Caruso was the first superstar of the 20th century -- and this without the benefit of mass media. His person and his records were his greatest publicity.
The set begins with Caruso's Italian made recordings. They show a great raw talent. The artistry is lacking with many sobs, over acting and mistaken cues. The 1902 and 1903 clearly show a tenor with a lot to learn. But learn it he did. His 1904 sessions show a mature artist on par with any heard since. His voice matures before your very ears and by 1910, you wonder if you will ever listen to any other tenor the same way again.
The engineering used for this set is wonderful. There is no attempt at all to use the soundstream process of computer sound enhancement as heard on the RCA issued sets. These are near perfect mint conditioned discs copied by engineer extraordinary Ward Marston. They sound like natural 78s, they way Caruso himself must have heard the playbacks at the (RCA) Victor studios.
Also included are outtakes and extra takes. There is a "Celeste Aida" from 1908, complete with a broken high note, previously released by RCA in a 1973 set commemorating the tenor's centenary birthday. But there are new treasures here as well, including extra takes of two of Caruso's greatest recordings, the Italian song "L'Alba separa dalla l'uce ombra" and an aria from Rubinestine's Nerone. Listening to them, one wonders what Caruso could have possible thought inadquate in those long lost altenative takes.
Finally, there is the simple joy of hearing so many things so well sung. Caruso was the pinnacle of the tenor art. He can be compared to no other single tenor since ... he has the brilliant ring of Bjorling, the passion of Gigli, the beauty of Gedda, the youthful enthusiasm of Lanza, the warm tonal quality of Tucker, the pure strength of Corelli, the charasma of Pavarotti and the artestry of Domingo.
Whether you are an opera fan, a voice fan or just a music lover. This set is worth every penny.

Amazon.com essential recording
This collection features wide-ranging repertory, including Russian Romantics like Rachmaninoff and Scriabin that were Horowitz's concert staples, all stunningly played. The Chopin "Funeral March" Sonata is taken at a flowing pace, with a crisp, touching march. Schumann's Kinderszenen is fetchingly done with disarming simplicity and heartfelt poetry. He "improves" Liszt's 19th Hungarian Rhapsody with doubling and rewriting, but it's no less exciting for all that. A stylish Beethoven "Pathetique" Sonata is treasurable for singing tone reined into a classical framework. A good overview of Horowitz's style and repertory with many delights. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Horowitz at his Musical and Technical Prime.......2003-01-06
Volume One of Sony's reissue of Vladimir Horowitz's Complete Columbia Masterworks Recordings contains studio recordings from 1962-63. His first three LPs for Columbia (Columbia Presents Vladimir Horowitz, The Sound of Horowitz, and In His First Recordings of...) were conceived as mini-recitals and have been carefully resequenced to fill two CDs.
By 1962, Horowitz had not performed in public for nine years. Frustrated with the repertoire restrictions, poor sound and lack of marketing he was receiving from RCA, he abandoned Little Nipper and signed on with Columbia Masterworks, headed by the legendary Goddard Lieberson. Thomas Frost was assigned as Horowitz's producer, and the two clicked immediately. The fine results they obtained can be heard here.
For decades Horowitz had a problematic relationship with Chopin's Second Sonata. A 1936 attempt to record the piece was aborted due to the pianist's first nervous breakdown (the first movement survives). Horowitz's 1950 recording for RCA is a bizarre collection of details, with a Funeral March that sounds like a Russian boat song on steroids. This 1962 recording is highly successful, however. Horowitz is obviously on top of the piece, technically, with his spare pedaling highlighting Chopin's use of counterpoint. The Funeral March is, for once, played with a crisp rhythm, the central section exquisitely balanced. He performed this work several times in the 1970s, but not as convincingly. The other Chopin works fare as well, including a passionate "Revolutionary" Etude and a tightly controlled B-minor Scherzo with a characteristically Horowitzian touch: Interlocking octaves replace Chopin's chromatic scales in the coda.
Schumann was Horowitz's favorite German composer. Here we have a swift Arabeske, painted in delicate watercolors, and a reflective Kinderscenen, featuring some remarkable voicing. Less successful is the Toccata, which is pianistically unstable and was spliced together virtually bar-by-bar (this remastering smoothes out the edits much better than previous issues).
Horowitz was less fond of Beethoven. He admired the Master's musical ideas and architecture, but was frustrated by Beethoven's piano writing, and many of Horowitz's Beethoven recordings are not convincing--although none could be classified as "bad." This version of the Pathétique (the only Sonata named by Beethoven himself) is one of the best ones, with a perfectly paced opening movement, a beautifully weighted Andante, and an unrushed Finale. Likewise with the lovingly voiced Schubert Impromptu, which is a great improvement over his 1953 recording which was performed in the wrong key!
Horowitz seldom played Debussy and recorded no Ravel. One wonders why, listening to the three Preludes from Book II included here. Horowitz's ability to control the lower levels of dynamics, playing soft-softer-softest, and his deft tone painting suit this music perfectly.
Of course, no Horowitz recital would be complete without Scarlatti, Scriabin and Rachmaninoff. The three Scarlatti Sonatas document Horowitz's increasing concern with authenticity, coupled with his ability to play with infinite grades of detachment and color. The Rachmaninoff and Scriabin illustrate Horowitz's huge dynamic range and unique understanding of Russian rhetoric.
Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 19 is a rather monotonous piece in the original version, but Horowitz's arrangement of it here unquestionably improves the piece. Not only is the work more spectacular with Horowitz's additions, but the pianist's editing maked the structure more coherent. This was originally the last piece on the first LP he made for Columbia, and it's obvious his intent was to show that although he had mellowed and matured, he could still play "like Horowitz" when he chose. He proved his point.
These recordings were produced at Columbia's legendary 30th Street Studio (actually a converted church) and the "360-degree" sound was widely praised in its day. The remastering has opened up the dynamics, and brought forth a fuller, more natural sound, reducing noise without overly capping the high frequencies.
Delightful First Volume.......2000-11-12
"The Studio Recordings 1962-1963" is the first of Vladimir Horowitz's incredible nine CD volumes of the Complete Masterworks Recordings, which are available individually or as a boxed set. Volume One features solo piano works by an amazing array of composers -- Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Scarlatti, Scriabin, Schubert and Schumann. Several of these pieces I was not familiar with prior to purchasing this disc, especially Schumann's "Kinderszenen" and Horowitz's own transcription for Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 19, and they are wonderful additions to my collection. Some of the other pieces I do have other versions of, and it is delightful to hear the subtle differences in Horowitz's style and interpretation. I always thought Rubinstein was the best at playing Chopin, but Horowitz really gives him a run for his money. The Etudes and the Scherzo are played like they are Horowitz's old friends, and the "Funeral March" flows beautifully between the somber and revelatory passages. I might even have to give Horowitz's rendition the nod over Van Cliburn's version (see my review of that title). Horowitz handles Debussy's three Preludes (from Book II) with all the majesty of Walter Gieseking's classic recordings. And Horowitz's reading of Beethoven's "Pathetique" Sonata is equal, if not superior, to the version by Daniel Barenboim that is coupled with Tchaikovsky's "Pathetique" Symphony. Finally, Horowitz captures three Scarlatti sonatas (not featured on Volume 2) in the brilliant manner that only he could. This two-disc set is an essential purchase for the new and veteran classical music fan alike.
