Writing a credible musical is hard enough, but writing a credible musical based on both Nick Hornby's High Fidelity, one of indie rockdom's most beloved novels, and his film adaptation was a herculean task. Give book writer David Lindsay-Abaire (the Pulitzer Prize-winning Rabbit Hole), lyricist Amanda Green, and composer Tom Kitt credit for trying, even if when listening to this CD it quickly becomes clear that their middle-of-Broadway sensibility may not have been the most suited to source material completely immersed in the obsessive world of record-collecting rock purists. (Compare and contrast to the obsessive world of record-collecting show-tune purists, which is the background for the wonderful Drowsy Chaperone.) The energetic cast exerts itself--and, as in the movie, Rob's record-store helpers Dick (Christian Anderson) and Barry (Jay Klaitz) steal the show from leads Rob (Will Chase) and Laura (Jenn Colella). But while the shrieky, Guns N' Roses-meets-Beastie Boys "Conflict Resolution" is fun, overall the music lacks spark and energy, which is quite noticeable in a number that should be BIG, like "Nine Percent Chance." The CD includes "Too Tired," a bonus track sung by Colella that was cut from the show. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

My Favorite Broadway Album of 2006.......2007-07-06

I saw this show in previews and was fairly impressed, but after listening to this album a few times, I realize what a fantastic gem of a musical this really was. The music soars and the lyrics are the smartest and funniest I've heard in years. It helps if you relate to the material, which is directed at underachieving 30 somethings. Right now, I'm particularly fond of "Ready to Settle". A rare bonus is that all of the tracks are great.

Alright, I really wanted to like this recording, Hi Fidelity is one of my favorite books and I love the movie very much. The cast recording is highly disappointing. The lyrics are bad, really bad. The music is catchy and if you are a fan of the book and or movie its kind of neat to hear the parts of the story in song but honestly the only good part of this cast recording is leading man Will Chase playing Rob.

How a Lack of Patience Killed a Great Broadway Musical!.......2007-06-27

After listening to this CD you are going to ask youself how did this play not have an extended run on Broadway. The score is a jewel in the tradition of "RENT." I can't get a number of the melodies out of my head. This score has it all! Excellent and fun lyrics and catchy tunes. I just can't understand critics. If a musical isn't completely unique it gets trashed. I read some of the reviews and could not believe what I read. Good Songs, Good Acting, Good Chemestry, Good Creative team, etc, etc, etc. So what was wrong? Well, the answer, is nothing! So if you want to listen to a wonderful musical score and scratch your head on why the producers turned chicken and dumped a wonderful play you must purchase this CD.

Terrific recording (5 stars) of a Flop show (2 stars).......2007-05-30

This is a wonderfully done recording of a show that was definately a flop. The music is entertaining, the lyrics particularly good. While the piece doesn't hold together as something that was worth 125.00 a ticket on Broadway, it certainly is fun listening. The music is pop rock, in the vein of The Wedding Singer (a much superior entertainment as a show). While I didn't like the show live, I enjoy the recording and have listened to it more than once. It is worth having in your Broadway collection, and it will surely be a show that is done across the country in community and college theatre, where new works are sorely in need (whether or not they are any good).

SOFT ROCK.......VERY SOFT ROCK.......2007-05-17

Listening to the CD of "High Fidelity" presents a quandry. Although the music is tuneful and rock, it's soft rock at its' softest. Since the main focus of the story revolves around a used vinyl record shop, it's curious that the score doesn't contain at least one or two high energy, all-stops out numbers. This may have been a calculated risk on the part of the composer but it didn't succeed and the show didnt even last a week on Broadway. The score is blessed with literate and intelligent lyrics by Amanda Green and since lyrics are meant to compliment the music and vice versa- in this instance the lyrics for this score outshine the music.

The cast are unknowns but Will Chase is good as Rob, the perpetually unlucky-in-love record shop owner. He rates his romantic disasters like a top ten Billboard music chart.

The CD makes for pleasant listening but considering the storys locale it should have been a blast.

I rated 4 stars because despite my reservations Tom Kitt the composer and especially Amanda Green the lyricist are talented and probably have a future in music ahead of them.

And oh how she exceeds her oft-noted influences (PJ Harvey and Chrissie Hynde, for two): Whether she's hanging back with a staggered beat on "Phenomena," or riding on the kick-drum-pounded opening to "Honeybear," she's always ready to disappear in a burst of Nick Zinner's guitars and Brian Chase's drums. The YYYs thrill precisely because of their keen mix, Karen O spiking the upper ranges (dig the caterwaul in "Mysteries") with a sharply cut vocal line or a simple, full-bodied singsong delivery while the guitars spin thick storms of sound before retreating to atmospherics (try the transition from the quick throttle of "Cheated Hearts" into the Cure-ish "Dudley," for one example). It's hard to create a new sound in rock these days, but the Yeah Yeah Yeahs manage to do it on this albumn. The rough overdriven guitar, straightforeward drumming, and raspy vocals all combine beautifully to create this unique sound. In exploring new indie rock, this one is a real find.

YYY's second LP shows depth & growth........2007-05-17

Ever since I heard them a few years ago, I've been hooked on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I first heard the diverse and fun Fever To Tell, and while that didn't have a lot of depth, it didn't really need it. It's one of those that sold because of how much it rocked. I recently got around to the debut EP, which was also quite good as well. On this album, lots is added that wasn't quite as present as on the other albums.

Karen O kind of reminds me of Tegan and/or Sara on some of the tracks. She does a lot more singing on here and less yelping than in previous times, but it's not a boring record. I think "Honeybear" sounds like the "old" YYY's. I've always enjoyed Nick Zinner's guitar riffs and some of the stuff here is actually quite interesting. For one thing, half of the lyrics are cryptic, like stream of consciousness tracks. Then you get the ones about unrequited love like "Cheated Hearts," one of the album's finest tracks, if not the finest.

Songs like "The Sweets" show an added musical depth. The track is simple, yet I like how it all flows together on the track. It sort of sounds like a demo, actually, but one mastered to CD quality. This one also emphasizes the group's new wave influences more than the previous works. There's really no filler on here.

I remembered being really crushed last fall when I missed out on seeing them. Oh well, there's the records to make up for the lacked experience. This record makes me still interested in whatever comes next from the group. Judging by this record, they'll be around for awhile.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have provided a sound different than other bands. This is the second, and in my opinior far superior album. Even my friend who said they hated the Yeah Yeah Yeah's heard a song and said they loved it. I definately reccomend it.

Something like a phenomena.......2007-04-09

The Yeah Yeah Yeah's are a band that rides mostly on their personality. More specifically, on that of Karen O. Her various styles of singing, from emotive singing on the acoustic "Warrior" to the rock bark of "Gold Lion," Karen leads the YYY's like few women other than Chrissie Hynde. But just a front woman does not a band make, and Karen's bandmates Brian Chase and Nick Zinner make enough variations of racket behind her to make "Show Your Bones" a distinctive CD.

There are also a few great songs to be found here. In addition to the aforementioned "Warrior" and "Gold Lion," there is the snazzy "Phenomena" and the catchy album closer "Turn Into." Not quite as slick as Garbage or as classic as The Pretenders' best work, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are somewhere between the two, and inching towards brilliance.

Good companion for Battlestar Fans.......2007-05-07

If you're a Battlestar Galatica Fan, this audio is an excellent companion to your collection. Passacaglia, Forgiven, and The Shape of Things to Come are emotional and addictive orchestral soundtracks. Not every song from the first season is included in this CD. The opening credit songs for the UK and the US versions and the battle songs (The Thousandth Landing, Battle on the Asteroid) are included. Battlestar Muzaktica is quite odd and doesn't fit with the collection of songs.

Captures the feel of the show.......2007-04-11

Has a great selection of songs from the 1st season. I like show/movie CDs that you can picture the scenes and emotion of the actors when you hear the song. The Celtic underlays are great, and the Taiko drumming style is very well used for building intensity in the music. If you really like the series, you should probably really enjoy the music as well!

Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-04-11

If you like the music in a scene that just blends in and makes the scene even more emotional or suspenseful, that is what the scores from season one do on this cd. I initially bought it to for the prologue (cylon music) and the two main titles (U.S. and U.K.) but after listening to the entire cd, I have become completely addicted to it. The titles of the scores usually give you a hint of the scene and the liner notes also tell you the episode that they are from but the soundtrack has definitely made rewatching season one an even more intriguing experience. The scores with words, are written by Bear and are in various languages, but the words, especially the opera piece, are actually so dead one with the scene and in this specific scene hilarious. I love this soundtrack. If you are someone who is addicted to really grasping everything that happens in this show and watch and analyze it beyond face value, this is an added bonus to have in your collection. I highly recommend it!!!

Man I love the Classic and the Present BSG's So Inaturally find the SoundTrack/Score A joy and very relaxing. They tend to sound very similar but they are very diffrent.

There have been lots of raving reviews of this album, as well as the equally sensational season 2 soundtrack. I just wanted to add my opinion on one track, "Destiny". An earlier review describes an Arabic string instrument being used, but it is actually a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument that has such a distinct sound that it's hard to imagine it being used for anything other than traditional gagaku music. I don't know if anyone but McCreary has ever tried to use this instrument for something else, but it hardly matters. The fact that McCreary managed to use it so effectively in a piece that is so different from gagaku music is a perfect testament to his unique genius. I'm really looking forward to following McCreary's career.

Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

If Roast Beef of Old England isn't enough to spawn a dose of contact scurvy, many other of these two dozen salty tunes will set the boat a-rocking. Treasures such as "A Jolly Sailor's True Description of a Man-of-War" and "Drops of Brandy" detail life among British seamen of the early 1800s without dredging up too much of the usual pirates, shipwrecks, or mutiny. It's an historical document of the regular life at sea, inspired by the British Navy novels of Patrick O'Brian, with intentions to anchor the writing in the ordinary sounds and stories of those fictionalized seafaring times. Glad fiddle, fife, and Jerry Bryant's humble six-man choral crew Starboard Mess spill the beans in suitable fashion without a sailor's colorful vocabulary. Set Sail With These Great Songs.......2007-01-28

Jerry Bryant and his Starboard Mess offer up to the listener some wonderful performances of traditional British sailor tunes. They are all performed acapella, and despite other reviewers saying that these songs lack spirit, I find that there's plenty in store. Pennywhistle and fiddle songs are also thrown in and do nothing but add to the enjoyment of this album. Read your favorite Jack Aubrey novel or other seafaring tales such as "Treasure Island" while listening to this album to truly enhance your literary experience. My personal favorites include "Spanish Ladies" and "Bay of Biscay-o."

You should see the looks I get from the little wannabe thugs in their tricked out Hondas listening to hip-hop when I pull up next to them in my conservative white Toyota Camry and I'm belting out lines like "We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors...." Jay-Z can't even hold a candle to these wonderful old tunes.

Just what I was looking for, some traditional British songs from the age of sail. I recomend this for anyone with an interest in British maritime and naval history.

I've owned this CD for a few years now, and it hasn't become stale yet.

Being a 'younger' person with generally 'younger' preferences in music, and yet still a person thoroughly devoted to Patrick O'Brian and all his works, on first listening I was doubtful.

Another two or three spins around the CD player, though, and I was hooked. Crisp, clear and obviously as historically accurate as they can be, these songs give delight even now.

Best use? Volume dialled up to eleven for the morning drive to work, bellowing along at the top of my voice - and often the bottom of my range! Heart of Oak, Roast Beef of Old England, The Shannon and the Chesapeake - uproarious. Sailor's Jacket is the foot-tappingest instrumental; it still sets my toes a-jumping. And the sweeter songs? Give them plenty of wellie .. Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy is fabulous.

Other big numbers: A Jolly Sailor's True Description of a Man-of-War, A New Sea Song (Sweethearts & Wives) - which has some fabulously 'historically accurate' narrative within (POB readers will know whereof I speak! ;-} - and Distressed Men-of-War - another song referred to within the POB Canon.

Great CD!.......2005-10-28

I am very impressed with the quality of this CD. The sound is clear and the tones perfect. It was a surprise just how familiar all the song is! They are very vivid and worldly. I bought this CD with out knowing what was on it; I was truly surprised and happy with it. My 6th graders will enjoy learning to this CD, and as well as singing the songs to complement our reading of Treasure Island.

This Ron Howard film parlays the troubled story of Nobel laureate John Forbes Nash Jr., a gifted Princeton mathematics professor tormented for decades by paranoid schizophrenia, into something considerably richer than typical Hollywood triumph-against-all-odds fare. As other reviewers will tell you yes this is another Horner machine made soundtrack. But it still sounds good! If you are a Horner fan by all means buy it otherwise "at your own risk"!

And another thing that gets me is no one even bothered to mention "Alicia Discovers Nash's Dark World" I happened to like this one this is the song that plays when he is in the hospital.

James Horner's soundtrack for A BEAUTIFUL MIND is as psychologically intense as the film it so effectively embellishes.

Charlotte Church provides an appropriately eerie and largely non-verbal soprano to this remarkable motion picture score, yet one that would seem only quirky were it not so beautifully embedded in a musical stream that draws one inexorably and almost vicariously into the emotional turbulence of the Princeton mathematician John Nash.

There is an angelic nature to the shape and texture of this music, one that is able to turn demonic as the story line requires. Both by brilliance and by dementia, Nash seems the object of external forces, rising with supreme heroism (at least in the film's version of events) to conquer. The music is there at each score, coaxing the viewer into empathic solidarity with this deeply troubled man and his long-suffering and preternaturally beautiful wife.

This is mood music of the deeply engaging variety. Its lush tonal landscape is achieved under the baton of the composer himself. The score's vast range of volume and expression would certainly have made it a joy to watch in performance.

Alas, we don't have that.

But we have this.

An ethereal, compelling, even gripping tone poem. Buy it.

The sound track for "A Beautiful Mind" stayed with me long after the movie. The CD has all the themes that made the movie so emotionally powerfull. James Horner, composer and conductor, perfectly matches the excitement of genius and the terror of mental disability. Charlotte Church's clear and gentle voice compliments the music and used instrumentally creates a haunting refrain. I loved the movie and this music is wonderful.

This CD was everything I expected it to be. Others have commented that the sound was somewhat lacking, but in my car stereo (a very good 6 speaker system but not an extremely high end unit) it sounds great.

At first, I cringed when I saw the price that most of these Chase CDs were going for. But, I decided to go for it and have been very happy with my decision. "Get it On" is probably worth half of what you pay for the disc alone; it is that good. You just can't beat the sound of the four trumpets playing that descending scale into the chord- it's gorgeous. For those complaining about the sound quality (esp bass): I thought the bass sounded just fine, and love it. If you play a brass instrument (esp trumpet), this is a must-have CD.

The shipment arrived on time with no problems. The quality of the CD recording was somewhat lacking. Bass reproduction had no depth and the track "Open Up Wide" had a background 60 hz hum. Regardless, it was still good to hear Bill Chase approach low-earth orbit with his trumpet.

One of the best pieces of rock ever recorded, one of the worst reissue I ever heard. Do not buy this Japanese import! If you know what this album is suppose to sound like then you will want to cry when you hear Sony's butchering of this reissue. I am not being over critical here, this mix will make you cringe, or maybe we are just getting spoiled by Rhino's superb job? It's a cryin shame

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

In hindsight, this is where mega-stardom began to get the better of Brooks's artistic instincts. Although tame by radical rock and rap standards, "We Shall Be Free" was controversial enough to alienate country radio with its pro-humanitarian, anti-racist, anti-homophobic message. Too bad the music itself was so whitebread. Covers of Patsy Cline's "Walking After Midnight" and Little Feat's "Dixie Chicken" intriguingly encapsulated Brooks's blend of classic country and '70s rock influences. But none of the album's originals equaled the easy-going appeal of Brooks's earlier work, while Allen Reynolds's even-handed studio production took on an overly-familiar quality. --Rick Mitchell

People of the world heed my call, Garth Brooks must be stopped. With his undisputed charm and his dashing good looks he has taken the world by storm, and has no intention of ceasing until he has seized it all. I must use this review to try to remain low profile while at the same time rallying those who are with me. Be forewarned though, if Garth Brooks gets wind of the uprise, he will strike down upon it with untold force. Garth Brooks is not of this world, and his intelligence, prowess, and fighting skill are beyond compare. He is proficient in fighting styles of 6 of the 7 continents of this world, including the death defying Antarctic Attack. In 1536 Garth Brooks was first introduced into the world as a plague overcoming the people Chile, and soon passed through many of the South American Nations. While cloaking themselves in black over their fallen comrades the natives of the continent tried to defeat the reputable force, only to be dismembered one by one as Garth Brooks seemed to be enjoying the havoc he has brought. After the complete destruction over the land, Garth Brooks laid dormant for over 4 centuries, plotting and keening his killing skills. It was not until recently that his personal battle sparked back up, and no one is sure why this point in time was chosen, but one factor is certain; the human race stands no chance. At first, I was under the impression that with the advances in weapons technologies, defense against the Brooks behemoth could be reached, but the wishful thinking was washed away as the mayhem ensued. Garth Brooks has also achieved levels of power that he alone was unaware of. His abilities grew to the extent that his form was unable to harness his true power without self destructing. As a result, Garth Brooks split himself into a second form to aid him in his battle against all. This second form is known only as Chris Gaines, and little is known as to which powers occupy his being and which powers were left in the original host.

So now I ask again, join me before it is too late. Fight the urges to rock out to him authentic country style and his undeniably unique originality. If nothing is done, it is only time before a third Garth Brooks emerges, and then we are only one Brooks away from the four Garth-men of the apocalypse.

If The Dance, The River and other songs weren't enough to prove Garth's amazing range to you, he adds to it with "We Shall Be Free". Of course it created "controversy" among the no-nothings that want Garth to be some kind of George Jones clone. Yo, people, like all things, country music will grow and change. Embrace it, because it is wonderful in this case. It's interesting that all people can say about "We Shall Be Free" is that it's anti-homophobic. Why, yes, it is. It is also anti-racist, pro-freedom of religion, pro-environment, pro-free speech, anti-poverty and all Garth. I'm proud to have country music begin to reflect all that is best about America and her people. It's time the hateful few stopped being able to control the flow of such a powerful American tradition as country music. We shall be free!

"The Chase" Might Have Better Been Named "The Change".......2003-10-16

As my reviews of his albums are an on-going look back from his first album to his most recent, I must begin by saying that, at least for me, "The Chase" was the album where Garth first began to show that his commercial marketing and familiar styling were replacing his genuineness.

By the time "The Chase" was released, Garth was firmly established as an artist. There was to be no question of his greatness, and certainly, no doubt of the success of this album. Perhaps in a need to maintain his momentum and his growth, or perhaps simply to continue to appeal to his massive and ever-growing audience, Garth released an album that seemed very calculated and, stylistically predictable.

"The Chase" is not a bad album at all...far from it, and by the standards of albums in release today, it is a great album. It contains all the elements of a marketable record and features some really great material. The problem is, Garth's early material was so strong, this album had impossibly large shoes to fill and, as a result, maybe fell a little short of the expectations of the audience it intended to reach.

"We Shall Be Free", the first track on the album, an edgy, powerful gospel-rock-ballad, is very well conceived, though it never received the attention it deserved. The song, which states that "we shall be free" when we dismiss prejudice and discrimination, is genuinely powerful, but it was also a little preachy, possibly turning off listeners whos opinions didn't match Garth's.

This album, like others also introduced us to a remake of several classic songs. "Dixie Chicken" was given a refreshing update, again blending the stylings of country with a blend of blues/gospel sound that make it poignant and enjoyable. Garth's reworking of "Walking After Midnight" however leaves something to be desired. It is good, but Patsy Cline gave the song such an absolute sound that this arrangement seems to fall a little short of the mark.

Unlike its predecessors, this album runs a little short on solid singles. The likable "That Summer" is a solid song, but uses the stylings for which Garth was becoming increasingly more recognized by, and results in sounding like a clone of some of his earlier work, instead of simply standing on its own.

The pieces that work best on this album are the ones that went unrecognized by country radio. "Somewhere Other Than the Night" is beautiful, and like much of Garth's material, is not a traditional love song, but instead a reflection on the need for love to extend beyond the physical, and really impact each of us moment by moment.

Perhaps the strongest piece on the album is "Night Rider's Lament", a delightful song about a man's quest to live out his life as a cowboy in the west after giving up the comforts of his life back in the city. The song is bold, and Garth takes a risk with it by yodelling the final portion of the song in the stylings of the old country-western singers. The result is delightful, and a nod-of-the-hat to country music fans of yesteryear.

Although this album does not, in my opinion, equal the strengths of his earlier efforts, it is a great album, full of some really great musical moments. It is well worth the time and the price of the CD, despite being a slightly weaker album than "Ropin the Wind", "No Fences" and his debut album, "Garth Brooks". It is still classic Garth-and so you can't go wrong here.

Not his best but still worth a listen.......2002-05-08

This album certainly isn't one of Brook's best, but as with all of his albums it manages to throw up some excellent moments. Released in 1992, it saw Brooks deviating further still from tradtional country, with the overall sound of the album being a lot more slick and pop-orientated than his previous efforts.

The highlights of this album include the opening 'We Shall Be Free', a gospel-tinged anthemn calling for world peace containing some memorable and moving lyrics. 'Somewhere Other Than The Night' is another of Garth's emotional power ballads. 'Every Now And Then' is one of the lesser known tracks but is still on a par with any other song on this album, another moving ballad reminincsing of a former lover.
A rock inspired cover of 'Dixie Chicken' is one of the more humorous moments.
My personal favourite by far however, is 'Night Riders Lament', a cowboy tale that finishes with some fine yodeling from Garth. A truly traditional gem that proves Garth is at his best when he sticks to country.

Creator/producer Joel Surnow's hit action-suspense series largely turns on an innovative fusion of real-time plot line delivered by aggressive camera work and multi-frame editing technique. But no small part of the show's intensely propulsive drive -- and much of its dramatic tension and atmospheric textures -- are consistently delivered by the music of young composer Sean Callery, who's won three straight Emmy nominations (winning once) for his contributions to the series. The composer personally selected and annotated the tracks for this anthology of his best work from the show's first three seasons, anchored by a complete version of the show's usually truncated theme. Though it shares similarities with Michael Giacchino's work on Alias, Callery's work here is consistently darker, an electro-organic fusion that spans tense, brooding orchestral passages and thrashing dollops of metallic-edged techno. Yet the composer also delivers moments of melodic, almost mournful solitude, while the third season's story line inspires some evocative Latin influences as well. Callery's background in sound effects editing contributes much to the rich sonic textures here, yielding a pioneering approach that portends a bright future for the composer. --Jerry McCulley

For fans of Sean Callery's work on 24, this CD is a must have. This soundtrack is also very enjoyable on long drives, and it brings you right into the show.

It was wonderful. As alway Sean Callery's music is outstanding. When you listen to it you can remember the scenes from 24. I would highy recomend it.

Sean Callery wrote incredibly beautiful pieces of music to underline the Tony/Michelle relationship. These are not on the cd. Although there are wonderful pieces of music(my personal favourite is the truly moving "The bomb detonates") I wish it were more complete.

A review from a soundtrack composer groupie.......2006-11-15

As I am writing this review, I have already ordered the "24:Season 4 & 5" soundtrack. (The follow-up to this CD) I was so excited to find out that Sean Callery was producing a second CD for fans of "24".

As the title of this review indicates, I own several soundtracks from various TV series and movies. Out of all of them, I believe this is my favorite. It is no wonder that Sean has won two Emmy's for his work on "24".

One of the great things about this CD is being able to hear the show's theme in it's entirety. The other most noteable tracks for me are "Jack's Revenge At The Docks" and "The Bomb Detonates"....I guess because of the scenes that they accompanied. My other favorites...."Palmer's Theme" (reminds me of "Fanfare For A Common Man") and "Coliseum Finale" (when I listen to this one, I can actually see Mrs. Palmer running through the LA Coliseum....as fast as the beat will take her.)

If you are a fan or "24" or a fan of great music, you NEED to get this CD!!

This score is one of the most emotional and well composed scores there is. The upbeat track really get you excited, while the softer, quieter track really get you into the emotion of the show. This CD is a great addition to any collection. You will not be sorry for buying this CD!
