Review(How original huh?).......2007-01-25

Personally, this is one of the absolute BEST soundtracks I have ever listened to. The music is calming, soothing, and truly wonderful. The music is so well put together and nicely coordinated and I feel like I am watching the movie again...it also makes great to read the Laura Ingalls Wilder books too. Try it...you might be suprised how well it fits. :)

Music that transcends simple meaning..........2006-07-16

Mark Isham's score for the motion picture A River Runs Through It is one of the most memorable and emotionally captivating film scores of all time. The arrangements of strings, piano, woodwinds create a meditative and reflective range of music throughout the film capturing all the emotions of this powerful drama about an American family in rural Montana. It is at once deeply haunting, moving, nostalgic and sentimental and captures the innocence and beauty of nature and childhood, as well as darker themes of rebellion and tragedy. There is a profound sense of emotion that is embedded within the music that sweeps over me every time I hear it. A combination of happiness, sadness, excitement, and reflection. There is something simply sweeping and majestic within his music. I couldn't think of anything else that would better compliment the film. Highly recommended.

Great Collection of Standards.......2005-07-25

I was fortunate to see Ms. Lettau in concert earlier this year and get a preview of many of these songs. And although everybody seems to be recording songs from The Great American Songbook these days, this is a worthwhile collection to get for both fans of these songs and of Ms. Lettau. Not as experimental as some of her previous collections, she puts her own mark on these songs, as on the upbeat "Bye Bye Blackbird", where she adds some great scat singing. Her accompaniment varies from a string orchestra to a jazz combo to a single instrument. On a great verson of "It's Delovely" she is only accompanied by a bass player, and that's all she needs. Her one offbeat selection here is "(It's not Easy) Being Green" from Sesame Street, and she makes it fit right in.

Depression-era recordings by the duo of Turner Layton and Clarence Johnstone, an African-American vocal act that made its fortune in England singing standards at the height of the Tin Pan Alley era. Their approach is a bit prissy and refined, but fans of sweet bands and crooners may find familar charms in these stripped-down performances.

Recorded within two weeks of Miles Davis's death, this CD is a direct emotional response to the trumpeter's passing from a long-established trio of his former sidemen: pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Gary Peacock, and drummer Jack DeJohnette. "For Miles," a collective improvisation that lasts for over 18 minutes, is both the literal and figurative centerpiece of the CD, a performance that seems to struggle toward a profound and somber expression. Otherwise it's a varied program, as much celebration of Davis's inspiration as lament, as it moves from the title standard, closely associated with Davis, to Oliver Nelson's seldom-played "Butch and Butch." Jarrett's playing is tightly focused, whether laconic and melodic or swinging with gusto, but it's very much a trio of equals, with DeJohnette offering constantly shifting accents and cymbal color and Peacock providing an original melodic voice as well as fluid and authoritative propulsion. --Stuart Broomer

Beware of the sound!.......2006-03-08

First, let me say I am a big fan of Keith Jarrett's trio work. I have many of them, including the Blue Note box set, and I thoroughly enjoy them. His "vocalizing" has not bothered me nearly as much as it clearly does some people. And my comments about this album are NOT about the vocalizing (although it is significantly worse than on many other Jarrett recordings).

The sound of the music itself is absolutely abysmal, in my humble opinion - VERY compressed (i.e. little dynamic range), very poor tonal quality and clarity, etc. I could go on and on. I was shocked, to be honest, as the sound of his other recordings varies from very good to excellent, and the sound of ECM recordings in general is excellent. I don't know what to say beyond this. I found no reason to listen to this music, when I have so many other alternatives from Jarrett's trio. Maybe I got a bad copy somehow? I don't otherwise know how to explain the fact that others have not complained about the sound. Maybe ECM has fixed whatever problem there may have been? This CD was recently purchased, however (winter of 05/06)

Very good, minus one track........2006-01-14

Keith Jarrett is at his lyrical best through most of this album, swinging on the uptempo numbers and connecting with strong emotional content on the ballads. The styles range a bit widely, but because the group is so tight and cohesive it holds together. My only reservation is the track "For Miles," which to me doesn't hold up and is way overlong. OK, I understand that others will disagree, and that Jarrett wanted to make a strong personal statement about his old friend Miles, but the track rambles and does not have any unifiying theme or melodic sense. For my taste, it drags, and at 18 minutes is quite skippable. No worries, though. Like most people, I copy my CDs to the hard drive, and even without "For Miles" you'll have 49 minutes of very expressive, lyrical, swinging, intelligent and emotional music. I'm very happy I bought this disc.

Absolutely Fantastic.......2003-12-27

This is amongst my favorite performances by the Jarrett/DeJohnette/Peacock trio. They are in peak form throughout, particularly in terms of their interplay, and the music is particularly touching for this band.

For Miles is beautiful and genius. It won't make sense, at least the parts not dominated by Jarrett's melodies, if you're not comfortable with the sort of abstract stuff that Peacock and Dejohnette did apart from Jarrett around the time. (Usually with other ECM artists, like Paul Bley.)

But it's well worth getting comfortable.

I purchased this c.d. because of the glowing recommendation I read on this website. In fact, this is not one of Jarrett's better albums. The verbal distractions are horrific: buzzing, grunting, groaning in alleged ecstasy. You can hardly follow the music at times.

I've heard Jarrett play Bach and Monk superbly. If he would only keep his mouth shut when swinging!

Oh yes, the piece For Miles is abstract and not particularly interesting. The distractions are at a minimum, however.

An Unforgettable Statement in a Medium of Jazz Trio.......1999-12-14

I originally came to this site to purchase the great Keith Jarrett Trio disc "Changeless", and I was seeing reviews of various books and albums, which of course made me think about writing one after seeing so many entries of inspiration! Well, I have to say something about "Bye Bye Blackbird", in case anyone is thinking about purchasing the cd. This was the first album I came to know of the unique collective known as Jarrett/Peacock/DeJohnette. I was a freshman in high school then, and I must say it was intersting to hear Jarrett groaning and cooing. I didn't know whether to think it was strange, or just part of his way of expressing himself. But what I did know was that he was honest, and obviously meditating on someone for which he cared very much: Miles. As the years passed, I would hear and read from critics of Jarrett that his vocal accompaniments were nonsensical, and a distraction to the music...or, "If you can get past the grunts of what sounds like the annihilation of an endangered species, there's a couple of really cool solos on there...y'know? " To me these words sing the tune of bologna, and for a devoted fan - stinky bologna. "Bye bye Blackbird", as an album, is without question one of the greatest introductions to the inner workings of this trio, and offers several "trio" perspectives represented in the repertoire. Tunes which are not commonly played (by themselves, as well as with any other trio) are explored with Miles in mind, and then the highlight is "For Miles" - a work of pure imagination, and without the rhetoric from which a lot of through-improvised pieces must endure. Other than this record, I would say the best introduction to this magical group is the album "Standards, Vol. 1"; but it is THIS album which draws from source after source, giving you a journey in listening with no beginning, and no end. Who knows, maybe it'll change the way you listen to modern music all together! Another side-note which makes this album a true gem - Jarrett and Dejohnette played together in a group of Miles' (which I'm sure the die-hards don't need to hear from me).... Until a later date, keep the music alive!

Forget what the other review said - this is improvisation of the highest possible order. Especially Bye Bye Blackbird, whose hyper-extended length and cool energy reminds me of Chasin' the Trane. That any group could improvise for eighteen minutes on one theme, and never let the pace flag, is incredible.

I think that"Bye Bye Blackbird," to me, just sounds like a couple of people, all playing different music, put together to make a song. I think it sounds awful, to say the least, but that's just my opinion.

"Bye Bye Blackbird" was the last of four live John Coltrane albums to be released by the Pablo label, originally on vinyl, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. All four titles -- the others are the double disc "Afro-Blue Impressions" and the single discs "The Paris Concert" and "The European Tour" -- feature the Classic Quartet of 'Trane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones in performances from a European tour in the fall of 1962. The finest of these four recordings in my opinion is "Afro-Blue Impressions," both in terms of the quantity of material (more than 90 minutes of music and a dozen tunes) and the quality of the performance and sound. With that being said, "Bye Bye Blackbird" is a close second. To my ears, the sound quality is better than that of "The European Tour" (see my review) and "The Paris Concert," and even though the Quartet tackles only two tunes, they are wonderful, lengthy improvisations on old Coltrane staples. My reason for withholding a fifth star, as with "The European Tour," is two-fold. First, these live discs are not as good as live albums released during Coltrane's lifetime, like "Live At Birdland" or "Live At The Village Vanguard, and second, Trane's Atlantic and early Impulse studio recordings are the best place for those new to his music to start. However, if you are a Coltrane fan, you should definitely buy "Bye Bye Blackbird," along with the other three Pablo titles.

This music will remind you of what passion is all about. John's sax cruises so gracefully through the upright bass and percussion so splendidly you'll think you're dreaming. A dream come true.

This disc consists of four performances.

BYE BYE BLACKBIRD:
This performance is the same one on the Pablo album of the same name. It was recorded by Norman Granz in Paris in November of 1962. A long performance, but a terrific one.

INCH WORM:
This annoying tune was on the Pablo album "Live in Paris". A Frank Loesser song that shows off Coltrane's fierce Soprano style.

IMPRESSIONS/CHIM CHIM CHEREE
I believe that these two performances are from the Half Note nightclub in 1965, and are therefore a twin of the recent "One Up One Down" release.
Clearly someone has taped them off the radio - the sound is so bad I sometimes wondered if McCoy Tyner was using an electric piano! But the performances are unbelieveable.

This is the only known recording of Coltrane playing Chim Chim Cheree except for the very short studio version. As a fan of that six-minute version, I had always wished I could hear this rare 20 minute version from the Half Note.
Well, it was worth getting. This performance is absolutely unbelieveable. Coltrane's initial statement of the theme turns the original Mary Poppins tune into a mournful, slinking ballad. I cannot now hear the original tune without thinking of this theme statement. The following improvisation is earth-shaking - Coltrane's soprano work blasts the listener with Albert Ayler-style screeches and double-stoppped counterpoint. The original tune is never stated "straight", but always kept in mind through the endless improvisation.
Tyner's solo is strangely jaunty, recovering some of the childlike innocence of the original tune in a waltz-y countertheme that should be added to the original tune! Yet he too never refers directly to the original tune. Coltrane re-enters after a while in a screeching solo that lasts for ten minutes.

Truly this is a rare jewel of a performance.

This Merry-Go-Round Doesn't Break Down!.......2005-04-12

Since several other reviewers have given very good descriptions of this CD, I won't re-hash here, but simply say I agree with what they've said. I will add my two cents on a few points not mentioned, though.

Since the Wurlitzer 165 band organ upon which these musical selections are played is in such good condition, we get a musically idealized version of what we once heard at the merry-go-round. The sonic reality often was quite a bit less, with imperfectly working instruments and the sound of the drive motor as it pumped away to turn the carousel, not to mention the noise of the crowd and the children shouting and squealing. This is no criticism of the CD, though, since it only purports to present the music; it would take a lot more than a CD to present a realistic facsimile of the total experience.

The liner notes are brief, but provide some interesting background on the origin of carousels and the words themselves. I think the writer, Tupper L. Turner, deserves credit for his/her efforts.

I was surprised to see Track #30 listed as "Waltz (Title unknown)" when opera lovers will immediately recognize it as two tunes from Verdi's opera "Il Trovatore" (The Troubadour). The first tune is the soprano/tenor duet in the Miserere scene of Act IV; the second is the baritone aria "Il balen del suo sorriso." In any case, neither is a waltz proper, for both are in 6/8, not 3/4 time.

The selection of tunes, of course, depends on availability of the paper rolls which encoded them. I liked most of the tunes, familiar and otherwise, pretty well, and with 31 tracks there's quite a bit of all kinds there, including "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down."

Overall, then, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the CD and the appropriateness of its content. There are several other CDs of this nature available, I know, but I'm not familiar enough with them to offer any comparisons. I just know that I like this one and am happy to have it in my collection. And I suspect that little children will love it!

It's a toughie reviewing this album - I don't know quite how to rate it for the everyday listener, seeing as how band organ music is definitely an acquired taste. However, that said, if you happen to be a band organ nut, you're in for a treat with this CD. It's about as good as it gets.

Kudos to Klavier records for making a recording of this wonderful Wurlitzer 165 band organ - it sounds like a dream, and has transferred relatively well to CD format. My only complaint is that the glockenspiel sounds rather abrasive, and gets really grating when recorded onto a cassette tape. Otherwise, the album is pristine.

The tunes featured are all classic band organ offerings, and the rolls used are in splendid shape. The organ's mechanism performs beautifully - whatever "prominent Midwestern collection", as the liner notes read, it comes from is taking very good care of it.

Basically, this, alongside its sister album "Catch Another Brass Ring", stands as an ideal representation of what a Wurlitzer 165 should sound like. Band organ lovers will adore it. The average Joe? Hard to say...but it's certainly worth a try.

This is the perfect antidote for the blues! It is absolutely impossible to feel down once you begin listening to this CD! I use it to give me a lift whenever I need it. I DARE you to not giggle with glee upon pressing the "play" button! If you have fond remembrances of carousel music as a child, you will get goosebumps and feel warm and fuzzy all at once when you listen to this! Why take anti-depressant drugs when you can cure the blahs quickly and naturally with this CD? An exceptionally clear recording, I bumped it down to four stars ONLY because I liked the musical selection slightly better on their follow-up album, "Catch Another Brass Ring."
