The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!

Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!

A let down.......2004-09-24

I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.

This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

This is the most comprehensive recording I've found of songs popular during the Civil War period. The performances are a time capsule of Civil War music.

Wow, what a dynamite recording. The music was simply beautiful. I felt the performer was completely connected with the text. The text was powerful and the singing was just stellar. I felt this cd took me on a musical journey. This was a great find.

Great Music Hamstrung By Corporate Whim........2004-09-02

The music of pianist Randy Weston, particularly his
collaborations with trombonist/arranger Melba Liston,
rank among the finest achievements in all Music. Yet
this initial release of Weston's timeless anthem BLUE
MOSES, originally issued through the CTI label in the
1970s, is a major disappointment.
The album has great players, among them trumpeter
Freddie Hubbard, and the most authentically Jazz-based
work ever achieved by Grover Washington Jr. on record.
Weston's compositions here are among the finest he
has ever written. Liston's arrangements are clearly
top of the line.
Unfortunately, producer Creed Taylor -or some other
trend-friendly corporate at CTI- apparently forced
Weston to play the entire date on electric piano. An
acoustic grandmaster with deep roots in Duke Ellington
and Thelonious Monk, Weston has always been ill at
ease with utilizing an electronic sound.

This album proves the validity of Weston's apprehension.
His larger-than-life touch, ruminating upon the Blues,
vibrantly nimble in striking the Call of Africa and the
mandates of African American legacy, just does not
communicate on a plugged-in keyboard.
Because of this, the entire album became just another
Pop management exercise in holding back some A-1 Jazz
which -as was the case with most product from the CTI
label- never happened. This session was successful
only for curiosity-happy thrill-seekers wanting their
tastes tickled... rather than fruitfully engaged.

Those interested in hearing how BLUE MOSES is supposed
to sound are advised to pick up THE HEALERS, the classic
duets of Weston and pistol-packing tenor champion David
Murray, or hear Weston's epic 2-CD hook-up with Liston,
Dizzy Gillespie and other friends, THE SPIRITS OF OUR
ANCESTORS. Check a great concert performance of the
roots masterwork on the DVD from Image Enetertainment,
RANDY WESTON: LIVE IN ST. LUCIA.

If your taste for Jazz runs only to the day-glo dilutions
of fusion, CTI cocktail wanderings, or the current slander
known as "smooth jazz", this might be for you.
If you love Jazz in its fullness, and particularly if you
love the work of Randy Weston and Melba Liston,
approach this album with a grain of salt.

Some good time blowin by Freddie Hubbard with a swinging Billy Cobham. Grover gets in some nice licks and the charts are very exciting.

Back in the 70's, I collected alot of CTI (and the subsidiary KUDU label)records. There were some great albums by Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Joe Farrell, Deodato, Ron Carter, Hubert Laws, George Benson, and a whole slew of others. But I remember this one particular album by Randy Weston, 'cause it was the very first CTI record I ever bought. I haven't heard it in years, but I still can hum the songs from this album. This was a great recording, and I am ordering it as soon as I finish this review. Some other recommendations from CTI records: Polar AC, by Freddie Hubbard, Red Clay, by Freddie Hubbard, The Joe Farrell Quartet, Body Talk by George Benson, Salt, by Stanley Turrentine, and Don't Mess With Mr. T, by Stanley Turrentine. I guarantee you will enjoy every one of these recordings.
