Album Description
Sousa 4 is the fourth in a series of Altissimo! releases from The US Marine Band featuring the music of John Philip Sousa. The selections on this album, with the exception of "National Fencibles", were recorded live in 1999 and 2000 while the band was on tour. The historic "National Fencibles" recording was completed in 1890 using the acoustic cylinders invented by Thomas Edison.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome.......2007-03-31
I originally purchased this CD for the track "White Rose March" because I absolutely love that song, but couldn't find it anywhere else. However, when I received the CD and began listening to it, I discovered a bunch of new Sousa songs that are awesome! I recommend this for any Sousa fan, but not if you're just getting into his music, because it doesn't have this most famous tunes (or greatest hits, if you will)--it contains more of the underplayed ones (like White Rose!) But definitely a good buy!
Best Sousa recording out there.......2005-09-10
This CD is not mid-range quality but the best buy out there. The performances are excellent and the recording quality very good; the band playing to a very appreciative audience.
I've many CDs of Sousa, including the other 3 Sousa Originals and some top-class performances by the Eastman Wind Ensemble (directed by Frederick Fennell)on Mercury and the Royal Marines Band (conducted by GAC Hoskins)on the EMI label but Sousa 4 is my favorite. If looking to start a collection again I wouldn't buy the Sousa Original box set, preferring to get Sousa 4, the Fennell and Hoskins recordings for a comprehensive range of interpretations(the other 3 Originals are very good by any standard but I think the Fennell and Hoskins better).
There's so many Sousa albums out there, many of them poor, that you can be picky, and Sousa 4 is the one to pick first.
Mid-Line Sousa Quality.......2004-03-04
One of the slightly better Altissimo! titles on Sousa. Here we have a series of live recordings taken from Marine band tours. The sound quality is a bit off at times, but overall they sound good. For a change Altissimo! has provided a few liner notes, something they were too cheap to do before. The length of the CD is close to an hour, a bit better than the 45 min. quickies these guys usually put out. Still over-priced for what you git, but probably the best in the Sousa series from Altissimo! I think I would still go with the Naxos series on Sousa.

Customer Reviews:
Something very precious.......2004-11-16
John Philip Sousa was a great musician and a great American. These recorded relics are very fascinating, and sometimes most vivid, reminders of his greatness
Great historical resource.......2000-08-24
This set consists of every recording released under the name of "the Sousa Band", from 1897-1930. Since some of these recordings are over 100 years old, they tend to be somewhat scratchy and occasionally faint. If you're a casual fan or you're buying your first Sousa record, your money can be better spent elsewhere.
However, these recordings are an invaluable resourse for students, performers, and teachers. Even with the limitations of early recording devices, there is no better demonstration of the style and nuance of the "March King" than these performances under his own baton. Also, the chance to actually hear Sousa's voice as he introduces the great "Stars and Stripes Forever" is to step into the past.

Customer Reviews:
The real deal.......2005-06-27
Although I had heard of Fenton Robinson, I was not familiar with his music. Somebody Loan Me a Dime was indeed a great "find." People, listen, this is the real deal. This is classic Chicago blues. The vocals are amazing, the guitar playing is laid back and beautiful and the backing band is first rate. This is what blues should be and what it isn't, anymore. There is a great mix of minor key tunes, shuffles and swing and Fenton pullls off these different styles with class. He somehow perfected a sweet-gruffness to his singing - it is hard to describe, but it is very effective. He can, vocally, hold a note/line a long time and it sounds great. His guitar playing is a model of what should be done by a professional musician. It is understated, jazzy and very bluesy. There is no distortion, reverb or overdrive - just straight ahead playing. I've read a lot about how Buddy Guy can't get on mainstream radio, and that is very true. Guy's solution is to play a lot of rock and roll and with a lot of noise. Listen, Guy is entitled. But blues music, of any kind, will never get much mainstream radio support. It makes more
sense to stick to what is true to the art form. If there are any kids reading this, who are interested in playing electric blues, Buy this CD. Not to copy it, per se, but to see how it is done. All the Robillard's amd Earl's will never match this for originality and powerful vocals.
A blues original.......2005-06-08
Fenton Robinson was a bluesman with country grit and city sophistication at the same time. This is the album on which it all came together.
As I write this review, all the Customer Reviews are five star. I completely agree.
ESSENTIAL.......2005-03-20
Fenton Robinson was one of the most promising blues artists of the 70's. With a beautiful voice and guitar style he had it all to hit it big. But despite releasing several very fine albums his career never took off, mainly because his style did not appeal to the mass blues fan base who wanted it all to sound like SRV or Johnny Winter. Though he was based in Chicago, his style was jazzier and owed more to T-Bone Walker than Muddy Waters, making even more distinct. After releasing a pair of disappointing albums for 77 Records he went to Alligator Records to record this, his finest album and one of the best blues albums of the 70's. He co-produced with Bruce Igauler and they got the perfect sound and feel for what was needed for a Fenton Robinson. The backing band is terrific, which includes Mighty Joe Young, who contributes very fine and unobtrusive rhythm guitar. The song's are varied, including several terrific slow blues ("Somebody Loan Me A Dime", "Directly From My Heart To You") to more up-tempo numbers ("The Getaway", "You Don't Know What Love Is"). There are a few well chosen covers as well, including his friend Larry Davis's "Texas Flood" and the classic "Going To Chicago". Throughout Fenton's smooth guitar playing and rich vocals are out front, definitely making him the star of the album.
This is an essential blues album, though it has not garnered the attention it deserves despite being as good as it is. Fenton died in 1997, and so this album is the best way to remember this truly great and under-recognized blues master.
Great less-known blues CD.......2005-01-08
I never heard of this guy, but after listening to this CD for a day, I ordered all of his others. Good stuff for sure.
Go out and buy it.......2004-03-09
Up there with "Live at the Regal". A can't miss record. When I put this on, people who don't like the blues tap their feet and ask me what I'm playing.
