Much has been said and written about Peter Brötzmann's Machine Gun, an album as violently intense as the title implies. But as seminal and acclaimed as that album is, Nipples, recorded around the same time with many of the same people, seems to be forgotten. Until now, that is. Atavistic's Unheard Music Series presents Nipples as part of its mission to help fans of improvised music have access to past gems. Here's one of those gems. Brötzmann is joined by saxophonist Evan Parker, percussionist Han Bennink, guitarist Derek Bailey, pianist Fred Van Hove, and bassist Buschi Niebergall. ECM Records founder Manfred Eicher handled the production duties. The full sextet hard-charges through the title track, with members matching the paint-peeling intensity of Brötzmann for nearly 18 minutes. Less dense, "Tell a Green Man" leaves more room for Bennink to come to the forefront in a leaner quartet rounded out by Brötzmann, Van Hove, Niebergall, and Bennink. Recorded in 1969, Nipples is a vibrant, early testament of this cast's lasting talent and creativity. --Tad Hendrickson

It finally won me over........2006-12-20

This is definatley a sountrack. For what? I guess "The Tropic of Nipples": an unrealized film? A soundtrack for the imagination? A private joke amoungst the collective on this CD? A "movie for the ears"? It doesn't matter. Upon the 3rd listening I got into the spirit and fun of this recording (on its' own quirky, strange, sprawling terms) and began to enjoy it.
The tracks veer from: spoken word poetry accompanied by noisy free-form jazz; very catchy punk-type songs; Bob singing short bursts of song into a cassette; reviews being read aloud; and more. This CD, for me, is an intellectual interesting journey and best listened to alone. This is not for everyone (even B. Pollard fans).
If you're curious what Bob Pollard, Vom (who, for me, have the best actual songs on this recording), Richard Meltzer, Antler, and Smegma might have put together, check out this CD. I give it 4 stars for balls, uniqeness, and because the SEQUENCING of the vastly different tracks give this album a rising arc with beginning, middle and end (which is an art-form in itself).

A Relentless Force of Nature.......2003-07-18

Peter Brotzman is one of those artists who's vision is so overwhelming and adamantine that to write about him is almost beside the point. His music is volcanic and like a volcano seems not to care very much what my puny opinion of it really is. Suffice it to say, the music on this disc is the most extreme from of energy jazz that I have ever heard. Next to Brotzman, Cecil Taylor is Mozart and Coltrane's Ascension is a walk in the park. While I am not sure that I can say I enjoy this stuff, I can say that it moves something in me...something visceral.

Nipples was released soon after Brotzman's breakthrough disc, Machine Gun. It lacks that work's unrelenting quality, plus it is written for a smaller ensemble. But this does not mean this is wimpy music....rather it is only for the brave. Brotzman's tenor is scorching. He has a raspy screetch that is all his own and dominates the ensemble everytime he plays. His foil on this date is Evan Parker. On this recording Parker is still in his post Coltrane mold, not having developed the unique style he would show on later discs. But his style here fits the ensemble in a way that his cooler later style wouldn't. Backing up the horns is a rhythm section with Fred Van Hove playing his mix of Cecil Taylor and Stockhausen, Derek Bailey on guitar extracting sound that borders on pure noise (it's easy to see why today's noise artists love Bailey so much) Hans Bennick on drums and Buschi Niebergall on bass. The result is a full scale attack of energy. At first you are just hit by the sonic assault, but with added listening you come to appreciate the group's sense of interplay and shifting textures. Unlike many bad free players, Brotzman's groups understand that you can't just play in your own little world....all the time. As a result, this disc is more than just "extreme", it is music.

The second side is a little less intense than the first. Parker and Bailey bow out and the piece is played by Brotzman and the rhythm section. As a result, you can appreciate Brotzman's soulful side as well as his fierce side. Bennick and Van Hove are marvelous on this cut. Their interplay under Broztman is telepathic.

Once again, thanks to Atavistic for this marvelous rerelease of legendary but rare music. The transfer quality is excellent as are the reproductions of the original liner notes and artwork. Atavistic is the standard by which many other independent labels should be judged.

one of brotzmann's finest.........2002-04-02

i could never understand why so many people fail to mention the melodic part of peter brotzmann's playing, as he is one of the only people i have ever heard (along with only hendrix and coltrane) who fuses wall-of-sound fury with interspersed passages of very fluid, beautiful note collections. but something sets brotzmann's music apart from anything else even musical, something about the way he plays so angry and melodic, that touches something deep inside you, and makes you want to go on a killing spree with a screwdriver and make love to everyone within five feet of you at the same time. this is PASSION, and the amount of it in brotzmann's playing is f**king incredible.
ps i just saw him play in the village maybe 2 days ago, with william parker and milford graves, and seeing the way they all interacted and improvised with one another, just completely changed the way i feel about music. at all costs, try and catch one of their shows, i promise you it will be the most intense ninety minutes of your life.

not easy listening.......2001-08-20

This was the first Peter Brotzmann disc I purchased.I had read reviews and was aware that he is a legend in free jazz circles, but nothing can prepare you for the onslaught of hearing him for the first time. I've been an avid jazz collector and fan for years.My definition of avante-garde and or free jazz was Cecil Taylor. Peter Brotzmann makes Cecil Taylor sound like the Preservation Hall Jazz band! You have to be prepared to give it a few listens; at first I was ready to return it! slowly it starts to take on a logic all it's own.

If you're checking out this Brotz reissue, you may have heard his legendary MACHINE GUN. This slightly later recording is a little less intense, less unrelenting. The "first side" is a sextet with Evan Parker on tenor and Derek Bailey on guitar, and that makes this a unique session.

Of these three titans of European free improv, Brotzmann has persevered with his raw, wild sound most single-mindedly over the years. Bailey's odd orthogonal electric picking gives NIPPLES a more open texture than MACHINE GUN. Parker has not yet fully evolved into "Evan Parker" yet here (of the amazing circular breathing and overtones, most awesomely with the Parker/Guy/Lytton trio), and what we hear is a player still clearly using late Coltrane as a point of reference. Parker is into manic, high-pitched, circular blowing totally distinct from Brotz's more guttural, earthy sound.

The "second side" is a quartet featuring Brotz, Han Bennink (percussion) and Fred van Hove (piano) without Parker and Bailey, and not only is it great stuff, but provides a fascinating contrast to the sextet. Thanks to Atavistic for their new Unheard Music series!

Another trippy release, from none other than the notorious Japanese space-noise rockers - Acid FREAKING Mothers Temple! 'Demons From Nipples' is every bit as good as most of the other numerous releases they've unleashed upon us. Like several other ATM efforts, you get just two tracks, the title cut "Demons From Nipples" (39:10) features plenty of acidic guitar shredding and bubbling synthesizer and "5 Second Demon" (12:48) is a bit heavier but still accomplishes the very same goal of scrabbling your brain cells. Worthy of repeated plays. Glue sniffers, stoners, hop heads, late night dreamers, stagnant slackers and aging hippies - REJOICE! Your day has finally come.

Cartoon Boyfriend's album is so eclectic, and they can't go wrong. The lyrics are hilarious and controversial and whole album is generally really entertaining. I've never seen the band live but I have seen Holly Wright..after all, he's my brother :)

It's not your typical album, don't buy it if you're looking for mainstream music. Each song is different, there are a lot of styles and influences going on, but there really isn't one bad song on the album. Very glad I finally remembered to tack this on to an order!!!!

New sound new style.......2001-02-16

Finally a band that doesn't sound like everybody else on the radio. At first I though this album was just entertaining, but then as I got more into the songs I discovered the controversial lyrics and a deeper reading of the songs. I like music that doesn't get redundant, and this album surely is the oposite. My favorite songs are the title track 2 hicks and a immigrant, friends in Low places (a cooler version than garth's) and Bulletproof. I hope these guys will come to my home town soon.

Nipples-Cartoon Boyfriend.......2001-02-09

This album is not my taste. When I first heard the album I thought I was listening to the same song over and over again, because the songs all sound the same. The only song I like on the album is "Leather". I can really relate to that ONLY song. The others are like childs play, they may be about reality, but not every day life. I like albums that have experiences of every day life. This album is for the younger age, such as 12-15. YES...the lyrics are somewhat mature, but the album to me I would advise for a younger audience. I have seen them perform at local clubs, and their on-stage performances ROCK! I think they are hitting it big, but yes the album sucks. Many bands work only on stage and I think they are awesome on stage. I have been to about 6 of their gigs and I truly enjoy them.

Bulletproof Nipples.......2000-07-28

Imagine being there when Nirvana, Pearl Jam, REM, or any alternative group was started. Well, when I listened to this album, I realized I was listening to a CD which no doubt will be a big hit.

Bulletproof, and Too Much bring back the days of Depeche Mode with a mix of REM, but Cartoon's sound adds some year 2000 influence with a mix of other disciplines. From Rap , Glam rock, to even country.....there is a mix of songs here. Even a ballad or two.

Give this one a listen........

A band in transition.......2004-05-25

Sweaty Nipples was really two bands. The first half of their existence, the sound was full of funk - many thumbs on bass strings. With the Tide Box single, they began their metamorphosis into the truly great Sweaty. Alas, there are only two and a half CDs of their 'after' material, but they stand up to any Clear Channel band on the alternative charts today.

Demon Juice is the track that really foretells the future. Sunni and Rum Warrior are tracks that describe where they were. Zipperfish is an interesting instrumental diversion, and of course, there's that... extra... bit of fun...

If you can find the Tide Box single, by all means pick it up. It's a piece of history.
