Editorial Reviews
TimeOut New York, Steve Smith
LeeÕs debut release as leader, at long last provides firsthand evidence of the distinctive personality behind those prodigious chops
Product Description
Born in Taejon, Korea, Okkyung Lee moved to Boston in 1993, where she received degrees in film scoring and improvisation. A ubiquitous figure in the downtown scene since 2000, her playing is passionate and uncompromising. For her debut CD she has created a sensitive suite drawing inspiration from her Korean roots, the world of mystery and the world of love. Featuring many of the musicians she has grown close to in the past several years, Nihm is a brilliantly conceived collection of music blending composition and improvisation in surprising new ways.

Great Soundtrack.......2007-02-07
I loved the music in this movie ever since I was little. I was so glad to see that this item was available. My favorite song is Flying Dreams sung by Paul Williams. Great soundtrack :)
Fantastic score...you will not be disappointed.......2006-04-21
This is probably one of my fondest memories from childhood...my cousin and I would watch this movie over and over again. Likewise, the music has always held a special place in my heart, and I finally got my hands on a copy of this CD. The first time, the second time, the 100th time, the music never gets old. Goldsmith has such a varied talent - he gets the dramatic, spine-tingling parts wonderfully, and can also create an eerie experience that is unrivaled. I am a collector of movie scores...and this is definately one of the higher-ranking CDs in my collection.
Absolutely the best!.......2002-06-18
I first became a movie score fan when i was exposed to Jerry Goldsmith in this film. I watched the movie over and over again both because it was a good movie and because the music was great. Every time I hear the CD start, with the chorus, I get chills down my spine. His use of music is not cartoonish in any way, it's written like a real life movie score. His use of a chorus is beautiful, and he creates some strange sounds with his music, such as the sting in "Sentry Reel". His themes are very creative and beautiful as well. Goldsmith deserves an Oscar or a nomination for this soundtrack. It is the best!!
Excellent Soundtrack.......2001-07-27
If you're a fan of this film, then get this soundtrack. The "Flying Dreams" track is reason enough to get it. It's also one of the "last" great soundtracks you bought on its own merits... not because so-and-so was in it or it was the album to have.
Animation music at it's best.......2000-07-06
Finally the CD version of this magical soundtrack is available. This is the first time composer Jerry Goldsmith enters the foray of animation and what a good job he has done with the soundtrack. The music encompasses many moods and brings to life the world of animation beautifully. Mr.Goldsmith successfully convey emotions and feelings to the fine art of animation and in doing that the audience is able to feel and appreciate the story even better. My congratulations to Mr.Goldsmith for composing one of his most enduring and beautiful score for a lovely piece of animation. Usually Goldsmith's music is used for the fantasy/horror film genre and with this one, he cleverly combined elements of sentimentality, childhood melodies and a touch of the fantasy world into a score of wonderment. My thumbs up again for this master of film music. Saw the movie years ago and was amaze with the artists and their work and the music really captured my imagainations. The music soars with such excitement without being too agresive and gently envelopes the scenes neatly. Wanted to get hold of the soundtrack for years and finally got it and now I can relish in the music that fascinated me for years. This scores takes a prominent place with his other scores for movies like 'The Omen', Poltergeist', 'Star Trek-The Motion Picture', 'Legend' and 'The Mummy'.

Customer Reviews:
Great debut........2005-05-31
Downtown cellist Okkyung Lee's debut recording is an enjoyable and well executed record. Utilizing a number of downtown musicians to great effect, Lee moves through several styles, infusing many of the downtown forms with a sense of brokenness and discord. Her harmonies tend to us an overt dissonance, while her playing is infused with an almost lamenting passion or a sense of animosity. It is this conveyance of emotion so powerfully throughout the record that really helps it stand up nicely.
Opening with a moody percussion feature (forJohn Hollenbeck, who steals the show at the drum kit on every track he appears on) ("On a Windy Day"), the feeling of discord is obvious from the start. As Hollenbeck splatters, tinkles, and explodes his way through the piece (supported delicately but whirling and haze from electronics manipulator Ikue Mori), a sense of unhappiness is conveyed. Whether this is due to compositional strength or performance is somewhat difficult to discern, Hollenbeck's work sounds pretty mixed as read and improvised.
Still, if performance is the strength, then its the leader who shines in emotional displays on "That Undeniable Empty Feeling" (a Masadaish jazz piece), standout "Story of You and Me" (a real standout duet with harpist Shelley Burgon-- Lee sounds, even on the most beautiful lines, to be filled with tension) and "Deep Blue Knot" (an explosive free improv duet with drummer Tim Barnes). And for compositional power, look no further than powder-keg "Closed Window", threatening to explode but never quite getting there and solo (with overdubs) cello piece "Sky".
There's moments that don't quite live up to the rest-- "Returning Point" doesn't seem to go anywhere, and "Home" is expertly performed by pianist Sylvie Courvoisier and Mori, but really isn't a spectacular piece (its a traditional piece arranged by Lee), but for the most part, this is a great recording. Recommended for downtown music fans.
