The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

Gets five stars despite..........2006-09-01
The fact that I don't like the 4th cd AT ALL. CDs 1,2 and 3 are filled with great, quality tunes which I've been listening to for years. I got this set around 1991 and I still listen to it quite a bit.
Yes, the Title Says it All: Listen to the Band........2005-08-01
I bought this box set in the early 90's with the complete and unapologetic intention of getting back to my roots. As the youngest of four siblings, the others all being much older than myself, I was exposed to the Monkees, Beatles, etc., for as long as I can remember. We always want to embrace our best memories, especially as we grow older and experience more of what life has in store for us. The Monkees are truly an ear candy happy place for a lot of people, and yours truly is no exception. I'm also happy to see that a so-called caricature band is being embraced by a lot of very young people here! Congratulations for discovering some very good music, regardless of what you may have heard.
It doesn't matter that the band started out as somebody's idea for a TV show aimed at the youth of the 60's. They had great songwriters like Boyce and Hart, King and Goffin, David Gates, and so on writing some very well-crafted, catchy-to-this-day songs that are still not being forgotten. That alone is proof positive against the arguments of all those dismissive naysayers. Let that make you say "I'm a Believer!"
The hits are all here from the TV show theme to 1986's not-so-great "Heart and Soul." I would like mostly to direct your attention to the first two discs in this four-cd collection, because there's not one bad song on either of them. Even the album tracks from that era are great, including when the band finally took over and began to write and play their own music under the tutelage of former Turtles member Chip Douglas (No, he is not the middle boy on My Three Sons, and he's not the brainchild behind Manheim Steamroller--his name is Chip Davis. And, yes, I write this because I kept getting confused about the name myself!:-D). In fact, the band recorded two great albums with Douglas, containing some great self-penned hits like Micky Dolenz's "Randy Scouse Git"(a song about his future and ex-wife Samantha) and the great bluesy brass driven "Goin' Down" before their unfortunate decline with The Birds, the Bees, and the Monkees, an album I never cared too much about. The other two cds aren't as consistently good, but they contain some true gems like "D.W. Washburn," the beautiful and hard-to-find "Someday Man," and one of my favorite of all of Mike Nesmith's country rock ditties, "Good, Clean Fun."
You also get a booklet full of rare photos, track-by-track descriptions of what was going down around the time of the recordings, and full studio musician credits. This box set is a must to own for both newcomers and long-time fans alike. I recommend it highly to anyone interested in this band that some never expected to have any lasting effect, and encourage you to keep their name buzzing around for many more years to come!
How much Monkees do you want?.......2004-04-28
I was a little too young to have been capable of getting a lot of the humor on the original series, but I wasn't too young to enjoy the music. I was born to be a Monkee's fan, but it wasn't until they began re-running the original episodes locally as an afternoon feature that I really got into the music. Back then I'd sit in front of the tv with my brother's tape recorder so that I could get the best possible "take" off of the tv speaker. This was how I listened to my Monkees movies for a long time until I got "Greatest Hits" as a 13th birthday present. I bought the Listen To The Band box set as a thirtieth birthday gift to myself and it gave me almost as big a thrill as the original album did back in 1975. Despite the cash-grab job of repackaging that Rhino seems to always be doing with the catalog, I can't say I've yet grown tired of the band, although the added tracks and rarities seem to be getting thinner from a quality standpoint with each new release. The box set suffers from this to some point, but for those who grew up with the afternoon tv as their only possible Monkee's outlet, it's a great thing to have handy for those occasions when your nostalgic sense gets the better of you.
Monkees Get Their Due.......2003-04-10
The debate of whether the Monkees played their own instruments or wrote their own songs ..yada, yada, yada...will go on forever. However, whoever was behind the music of the original pre-fab four, there were some great catchy pop tunes that came out of all the negativity. LISTEN TO THE BAND is the ultimate Monkees collection and highlights some songs that are worthy of airplay because you never hear these songs on the radio. The CD box set has all the classics (I'M A BELIEVER, LAST TRAIN TO CLARKSVILLE, DAYDREAM BELIEVER etc. etc.) but there were songs that are noteworthy and stand on their own. The highlight of the collection has to be Micky Dolenz' performance of GOIN'DOWN. It's a catchy pop/rock/jazz tune that's exhilarating and original. Other great songs include LOOK OUT (HERE COMES TOMORROW) sung by Davey Jones, PAPA GENE BLUES sung by Micheal Nesmith and DAILY NIGHTLY,a great psychedelic tune and the great and haunting LOVE IS ONLY SLEEPING both sung by Mickey Dolenz. The box set comes with a companion booklet of a little history of the Monkees and production notes behind each song. Overall, a box set that should deserves a place in anyones collection.
Full of fun and the usual Monkee mayhem..........2002-07-13
I bought this box set after watching the Monkees TV show on VH1 during a marathon. I fell in love with them and with their music. This box set is perfect for any fan because not only does it have the singles that made them famous, ("I'm A Believer", "Last Train To Clarksville") but it has rare b-sides that not many people know about. The songs are arranged so as to go from their early years to stuff from their 80s reunion. You can hear how their music changes as you go from CD to CD. Plus, to add more fun to the monkee mayhem, the booklet that comes with the CDs have insider information on what went on behind-the-scenes with the group. And let me not even mention all the pictures! All in all, this box set is more than worth it!

This collection of American songs spanning 150 years shows Deborah Voigt, one of the world's leading sopranos, in a new light. She successfully achieves the transition from the larger-than-life operatic stage to the intimate world of song, especially in the more outgoing, dramatic pieces. Voigt enters into each composer's style with complete empathy. Charles Ives was an irrepressible maverick and a stylistic chameleon. Voigt captures the songs' hymn-like simplicity and irreverent rambunctiousness, though her voice is a bit too heavy for them. Leonard Bernstein's jazzy irony also needs more lightness, but the slow love songs are done beautifully. Voigt really comes into her own in Charles Griffes's lush impressionism, evoking the sultriness of Cleopatra and the rhythms of a Spanish dance, and Amy Beach's unabashed effusive romanticism. Composer Ben Moore is a child of our own time, born in 1960. He moves between many styles with natural ease. Set to great English and American poetry, some of his songs were written for Voigt, and she sings them to perfection. The splendid pianist Brian Zeger provides both leadership and support. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Mixed results.......2006-02-22
This is an interesting collection of American songs, but I don't feel that Ms Voigt sold these selections to me. She still sounds like an opera singer trying to squeeze a very powerful and large voice into smaller setting for these songs, with mixed success. She is much, much better than many of her fellow sopranos that tried such repertoire, but I feel that she only gets it right in Amy Beach and Griffes songs. And even there, she does not have a sound that would make every song recital fan happy.
And what's with the title of this album? I think she is a classy artist and deserves better than such silly title, her label probably came up with that.
Nice try overall, but I hope Ms Voigt will do more Strauss and Wagner from now on, not more songs like these.
Like driving a Ferrari in a school zone........2006-02-02
Like a lot of big operatic voices, Voigt is hard to capture on CD; her recordings of Wagner and Strauss excerpts are good, but they can't convey the experience of hearing her live in an opera house. And singing with only piano accompaniment, as here, she simply can't use most of the power in her voice. As sensitive as her performances are I can't help feeling that she's having to hold back. For American song sung with more delicacy and grace I would suggest Barbara Bonney or Dawn Upshaw (I can't agree with previous reviewers' suggestion of Cheryl Studer's Barber, though Hampson is wonderful on that set).
Stellar Soprano Applies Her Considerable Talent to a Lightning-Quick, All-American Repertoire.......2005-11-08
It's a shame that soprano Deborah Voigt hit her greatest notoriety last year for being fired by the Royal Opera House for being too fat for the title role of "Ariadne aux Naxos" by Richard Strauss. She subsequently lost eighty pounds but luckily none of her vocal prowess as can be heard to great effect on this intriguing collection of American songs, 25 in all and averaging a little over two minutes each. It would have seemed like a mismatch to apply her powerful voice - famous for her big Wagnerian roles - to sometimes delicate tunes. Voigt, however, confounds expectations with a surprisingly nuanced performance that showcases her interpretative skills on a diverse set of musical styles.
Similar to what countertenor David Daniels did with his 2003 disc with guitarist Craig Ogden, "A Quiet Thing", Voigt and pianist Brian Zeger have created a wide-ranging lyrical repertoire that encompasses significant vocal demands while remaining intimate in setting. In fact, both Daniels and Voigt cover Leonard Bernstein's anti-war lullaby, "So Pretty", with haunting aplomb. She also manages to dance effectively over the "Da-ga-da-ga-dums" of Bernstein's challenging "Piccola serenata". Voigt does wonders with the opening Charles Ives selections by not overplaying the innate sentiment of the tunes, in particular, soaring with the highly dramatic "The Children's Hour" by Longfellow and even covering the churchy warhorse, "At the River", with conviction.
There are eight highly individualistic songs by Ben Moore that stretch Voigt with bountiful results. The standouts of the Moore set are the English sea chantey-like "The Ivy-Wife" by Thomas Hardy, the lushly romantic "I Am in Need of Music" by Elizabeth Bishop; the sweeping "Darkling, I Listen" by John Keats; and the discordant waltz, "Bright Cap and Streamers", by James Joyce. For me, the highpoints of the recording are the last two sets by Charles Tomlinson Griffes and Amy Beach, both of whom tap impressively into Voigt's natural theatricality proven especially by her performances of Griffes's lush "Cleopatra to the Asp" and Bishop's rolling "I Send My Heart Up to Thee".
The one shortcoming of the recording overall is that the briefness of the songs does not really capitalize on Voigt's impressive dramatic capabilities in showcasing changes in characters she would have been allowed in her opera roles. For all the limitations it represents, this is a genuine recital album, and truly transcendent moments are fleeting at best especially given the variety of moods that need to be expressed in lightning-flash strokes. However, taken for the genre it represents, this is a stellar recording to appreciate a singer who is able to do more than Wagner and lose weight.
May have a heart but what good is it if the artistic results are a void?.......2005-10-31
The header says it all. Thumbs down all the way. Get instead the Samuel Barber double set with Cheryl Studer and Thomas Hampson if you wish to experience true heartrending Americana. As another reviewer put it, you get no gimmicks and no camp from these two distinguished artists.
Great new context for Voigt.......2005-09-30
It is great to hear Voigt in an American lieder recital. She is a top vocalist in her vocal prime. I think this is a lovely disc, and it really takes off especially with the songs of Ben Moore who has written many works just for Voigt. She tones down the volume of her sound and reins in the dramatic aspect of her soprano to give these songs a proper context and remains in service of them throughout the recital. Give this one a try! EMI - Release her Marshallin from Der Rosenkavalier, I think it would be wonderful. I know she just took on that role this summer.

Hail To the Thief!.......2005-08-06
Despite the fact that most of our presidents are not worth remembering in music; this is none the less an interesting CD. Altissimo! has done its usualy bit of culling through the Marine Band library to dig out enough appropriate pieces to put together on one CD. No original recordings here! We should be glad that its a full length selection of over 60 mins for a change, instead of the old 45 min. cheats in the past! Still, the different sound qualities of the various tracks is distracting at times.
Most labels when they combine different recordings together usually list the recording date and who conducted the band at that time. Altissimo! has not graduated to that level of professionalism in their products yet. Hence we just get The US Marine Band, not when it was recorded and who might be directing it!
Fortunately, the quality of the Marine Band is so good that it does not matter what Altissimo! does in putting together a CD. That said, the music provides an interesting chronology of ceremonial music played at the White House over the years. The linear notes are an improvment over the past, when little or nothing was provided. All and all, not bad from what we have come to expect from Altissimo!
Hail to the Chief.......2005-02-02
Hail to the Chief is the latest of about twenty-seven CDs offered by "Altissimo!", which offer recordings of the USA's fine military service musical organizations. Until Altissimo!, these recording were very rare and just about impossible to find. Thanks to Altissimo! every one can appreciate and enjoy the fine music of these top-notch musical organizations.
The program in Hail to the Chief is a tribute to our presidents. It is a varied program that shows the depth of the music played by one of America's oldest, established in 1798, and finest musical organizations, the United States Marine Band. This CD contains twenty-one marches and other classical numbers from Sousa to Strauss to Tchaikovsky. Some of the music in the CD is rare and for this reason alone of interest to music history buffs. One of these selections is a recording of the "Star-Spangled Banner" using the earliest published arrangement (1814) of the anthem. Another is the "Solemn March" played at Lincoln's funeral. Also included a rarely recorded Sousa piece, "Easter Monday on the White House Lawn." There is also an historic 1906 recording of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag."
The recording also contains excerpts from speeches made by five of our presidents four of which were from inaugural addresses. The program notes explain the musical selections and how each was of interest to the various presidents.
The only negative, and it is not with the CD itself, is that the program notes do not include recording dates, where recorded and who the conductor of the band was. I highly recommend this CD to all interested in the America's patriotic music as well as the serious collector of military music and those interested in the musical roots of our country.

Another Great Altissimo! Release.......2005-01-13
Listening to the latest CD from Altissimo! brought pleasure to my ears. Whether you like listening to ballads, waltzes, Hungarian Dances, or marches you will find something on this CD that you will love to listen to. This wonderful compilation presents the listener with music favored by 23 of our United States Presidents, and includes bonus tracks of excerpts from four inaugural speeches.
Hail to the Chief.......2005-01-11
Hail to the Chief is unique, educational and without question, absolutely wonderful!
I was initially puzzled by the selections but as I began to listen and read the short narrative that is offered I started to realize I was being taken on a very different trip through American history. Consequently, the impact of the program had a totally unexpected and fascinating effect.
I was not just mesmerized by the sounds I heard, the arrangements which were presented or the memorable utterances of some of our Chief Executives. I was completely entranced by the realization that these men and others who had held the office of President of the United States, had listened and reacted to the same music the CD offers. It gave me an insight into their humanity that text books cannot provide.
As an example, I hadn't known the original sheet music for the "Star Spangled Banner" was arranged differently from the way we listen to it today --- who know how many Americans heard it played that way?
I had never actually thought about the fact that Washington might have actually heard "Hail Columbia" played, just as I was hearing it.
I was a bit startled that Chester Arthur commanded Sousa to compose what became the "Presidential Polonaise" and tried to imagine how much pressure he, (Sousa), must have felt in doing the President's bidding. (By the way, after listening to that unquestionably superb composition of the "March King", I must admit despite its delightful sound, I'm very pleased that we no longer use that as the official march of the President and we have returned to "Hail to the Chief".)
I vividly recall watching the casket of President Kennedy being carried over the steps of the Capitol and listening to "The Navy Hymn" and the music recaptured that moment as if it was yesterday.
It wasn't solely the music I savored but it was also the historical images they engendered. Indeed, music affects all "ages"!
The CD is a professional product that will hopefully be enjoyed by thousands for many years to come.

Adam Frey is amazing!.......2004-02-17
I play tuba and I recently had a workshop and a private lesson with Adam where he played Flight of the Bumblebee at top speed, all 12 major scales in less than 30 seconds, and a song using multiphonics (playing and humming a different note at the same time) that sounded impossible! I'd never imagined someone could be this amazing at a low brass instrument but he is. He's really amazing and he deserves all the fame and recognition that he gets.
An interesting change.......2003-03-18
This is different from most classical and instrumental cd's I have. It is neat to hear the euphonium showcased. You can tell that Adam Frey has a great sense of humor, the album art is fabulous! The album has a great variety, Flight of the Bumblebee is fantastic! I highly recommend this cd for anyone who wants a little something different in their classical collection.

King Black Acid - 'Royal Subjects' (Cavity Search).......2006-08-20
Looks to be the Portland band's second effort.I think I like this release as much as I did their 'Womb Star Sessions' CD(see my review).Simply more of KBA'S trademark 'inventive space rock' they seemed have semi-mastered.Best cuts here are "60 Cycles Numb","Call Me On The Headphones" and the fifteen-minute epic title track "Royal Subjects".Could swear I heard a didgeridoo and a violin in there. If you dig this genre, you might want to hunt down a copy of this disc.Worth many repeated plays.
Amazing.......1999-09-23
It's an amazing cd, in fact all of them are. It's like getting high without taking drugs like good music should be. Highly recommended
King Black Acid....Smooth and Tight.......1998-08-06
I was first introduced to the melodious sounds of King Black Acid while visiting Portland, Oregon in 1997....I had strolled into a small record shop to browse the local band albums, asking the shop owner for something in the way of harmonious, selflessly indulgent phsycadelia and he handed me this album...Listening to the first song, I must say, almost turned me off, but after listening to the rest of it in one sitting, I was hooked...beautifully lyrical, instumentaly persuasive and inert, this album deserves an audience...The highlights, the sweetly rendered "Only Wine Will tell", and the kinetic "14,000 Member Acid Army", will pull you in straight away...buy it...you won't be disappointed...and strap on those big puffy headphones, light a candle, close your eyes and listen to sounds of a bright and wonderful album.

Album Description
The freshest musical entity for the new millennium. An innovative blend of the Hip-Hop attitude with real authentic Harlem Swing, as played by some of the best jazz musicians in the world today, who have paid dues with some of the Royalty of Swing, such as Lionel Hampton, the Louis Armstrong Band, Illinois Jacquet, and Panama Francis. They represent a return to truly original melodies, along with lyrics that are pertinent to life in the times we live in, rather than being retro. And...most of all, they swing their butts off!
Customer Reviews:
Follow-up album a work of art.......2003-08-07
This album, the much anticipated follow-up to the Hound's ground-breaking Ghetto Swing Extreme does not disappoint.
The lyrics are as usual beautiful and breathtaking and the musicianship is tight, the Mad Komposa's performances being no exception.
G-Clef's slice of life, original writing is a refreshing change to the countless cover bands trite renditions of classic swing songs that now typify the modern swing movement and cause the old masters to roll over in their graves.
The vocalist on this album is no other than Star Search Winner Vickie Natale, whose smooth melodic tones accentuate the solid musicianship. Peter Hartmann's Chet Baker-esque tones float lightly along the meloncholic track "You're Taken".
There is not a bad song on this album! However, this reviewer's personal favorites are Sunray and Letting Go.
Lord Sledge, Jeremy Bacon, and Herman X appear on this album as they did on GSE and their performances do not dissapoint. Mark McGowan, who also did a disc "Live at Showman's " with G-Clef is also showcased, as is the young, up-and-coming drummer, Marlon Sobol.
fantabulous classic.......2003-07-28
All I can say is.... everyone who knows the swing ressurgence knows this album as a classic now, with Sun Ray, Thugbrat and Romantic Thugs on it, not only is this one a classic for those who want an entire album to swing dance to, but musically speaking this one's far and above the rest. This may have been far and away the best Hounds' LP.
