Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2006-08-06
This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.
Simply the Best.......2005-06-29
First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.
In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.
In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.
If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.
Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21
I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.
"Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30
This review is by Crosley.
I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.
There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.
I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.
A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16
There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.
This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.
My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

I absolutely love this CD!!! O'landa Draper was so very talented. The songs on the CD were written under the anointing. I love the music and the lyrics of the songs!!! My favorite song in this CD is "Use Me." The lead vocalist has a beautiful voice!!!! I personally feel as though this was O'landa Draper's best work ever!!! I miss O'landa Draper. He truly was an asset to the body of Christ. I was so hurt when I received word that he passed away.

Seekers Reunion.......2007-02-23
I will refer to the Dvd of this cause thats all i have. But this is an excellent recording from one of my favorite bands.
The audacity of this band to walk out on stage,(the boys sporting some fancy attire and Judith with a pretty dress.A rather simple stage, with the traditional double bass guitar owned by Athol, and various guitar duties shared by Bruce and Keith. With no gimmicks,no fire flames,no lazer lights or other tricks most bands use today)as if they are something special.
But when Judith sings the first few notes of When The Stars Begin To Fall, you know that they ARE something special.
You say to yourself,oh yeah i get it,this bands here to play music, you know that thing that tingles the ear drums, and uplifts you.
So thats what you get on this, great music from start to finish.
I like the bit in Myra when Judith misses her line, shows the human element of the show,i always get a laugh out of that.
This recording is from various concerts they had in Melbourne during the reunion.Eather that or i have no other explanation how Judith had 4 different dresses during this show!
The Melbourne Concert Hall looks bigger than what it actually does in person i think on this.I remember saying to my son that he would be the youngest person there at age 11 when we went there in 2004.But soon after entering a little girl ran past who wouldnt of been a day past 7.My boy said look at that dad i'd say shes younger than me.I have no doubt she forced her parents to take her!
There seemed to be a bit of emotion during this tour, and that certainly seems evident after Bruce Woodley's I Am Australian.
The new material fitted in brilliantly into the stage show, just a pity there wasnt more of it,And the show finishes with one of these new tracks called Keep A Dream In Your Pocket.
Then what happens is you automaticly press the play button and play it all over again.

This one? Great. As always. Though I don't think Vonski is best served by vocalists.

A Celebration of Quality Choral Hymns.......2000-10-26
In a world of pop Christian music, its wonderful to find quality choral recordings of current and classic hymns of faith such as this. The traditional Christiansen-sterile sound has been broken in the new St. Olaf generation without any sacrifice of quality. The ethnic and historic variety add real celebration and a choral treat! John Ferguson and company know hymns, know quality arrangements, and of course, quality performance.

Cameron Brown, the Back Story and "The Crossing".......2006-02-21
I remember reviewing Ann Dyer's "When I Look Into Your Eyes", which consisted of Ms. Dyer, bass and percussion. Though Down Beat rated that as the best vocal jazz album of 2003, I dissented, and argued in my review that you simply can't make great, stirring music with that instrumentation, no matter what you do.
Along comes this album, consisting of voice and bass only, which proves me to be absolutely wrong. Recorded live in late 2004 on Sheila Jordan's 76h birthday at the Triad, on Manhattan's upper west side, this is a great album and is one of 2005's very best.
I ask myself why, unable to convince myself that I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. I arrive at three reasons (hence the title of this review):
1) Cameron Brown, the bassist. What a performance! Mr. Brown has such a rich, fat sound on the string bass, whether plucked or bowed, that he creates overtones on virtually every note. Given that I was familiar with most of this program (unlike Ms. Dyer's), I could hear the harmonic fills as the notes were being played and sung. And on the second most special track, Dizzy's "Birks Works", Jay Clayton (another ridiculously underrated, long-time jazz singer) joins Ms. Jordan in a scatfest that made me want to sing along and create countermelodies.
2) The back story. At age 76, Ms. Jordan looked and sounded about 20 years younger. But though she vaguely referenced it during the set, she had a 99%-blocked artery and was going in for surgery the next morning. Given that jazz singers generally don't have health insurance or social security, she did this concert with the belief that it could have been the last thing she was ever to do on earth. And that leads to
3) Her encore, "The Crossing." Ms. Jordan, a recovered drug and alcohol addict, wrote this song as a tome to her recovery. But the song is even more universal than that. It is a song about the best of the human spirit, overcoming life's troubles. She survived the surgery; but imagine if she hadn't, and imagined that this was the last thing she ever was to sing. That thought, together with how she actually performed the song, brought me to tears the first time I heard it and still gives me chills.
Two albums recorded in 2005 had the presence of God on them: Lizz Wright's "Dreaming Wide Awake" and this one. In my book, that makes them the two best of 2005. RC
Sheila Jordan: Jazz Messenger .......2005-08-19
This live album, recorded over two nights during Sheila's 76th birthday celebration, is so engaging, so revelatory, such an out and out thrill. At one point, Sheila advises the audience to be messengers, and nothing else--just messengers, keeping alive the works of great musicians and composers like Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and, most significant here, Oscar Brown Jr. More than any other figure represented, Brown (who wrote both "Dat Dere" and "Hum Drum Blues" from Sheila's debut, Portrait of Sheila) emerges as the real find for the uninitiated. Within a thoroughly refreshed repertoire, Sheila unveils Brown's "Brother Where Are You?," a searching, haunting ballad so arresting that it is sure to kick off many searches for Brown's old albums. Sheila has been performing Brown's songs for decades, which we're reminded of at the top of the set with a snappy take of "Hum Drum Blues," but she pulls all the threads together here and allows us to see the whole picture, one we've been glimpsing bits of over the years. And we realize simultaneously what a wonderful composer Brown is and what a gift Sheila has for keeping jazz vital. She is thoroughly herself, never straining for effect or showiness, and deftly steps aside and lets her fellow jazzmen and -women, past and present, come forth into the light. And the sound is wonderful on this album--crisp, uncluttered, with an in-the-room intimacy. Sheila is a masterful messenger and this is one of the most exciting releases of her career.
