The original 1950 production of this classic played the mythical Damon Runyon world of New York City gamblers a lot straighter than the 1992 Broadway revival did. In fact, 1950 reviewers called this the "South Pacific of crapshooters." Alas, Guys and Dolls plays a lot better as a cartoon-like "fable" in the 1990s--which is why the revival is probably the definitive recording while this one is more a historical artifact. Still, it's a gas to hear Robert Alda (Alan's dad!) and Sam Levene originate the roles of Sky Masterson and Nathan Detroit, while both Vivian Blaine and Stubby Kaye (who actually gets most of the showstoppers) would repeat their roles in the otherwise dreadful 1955 Brando/Sinatra film version. And the Frank Loesser music is always great. --Bill Holdship

you can't beat the original!.......2007-06-10
I attempted to watch GUYS & DOLLS, with Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra, and I couldn't bare it. I'll tell you why. My mind kept drifting back to the Original Broadway Cast recording. For me, it was like watching stand-ins for the real thing. The problem was, the "real thing" never arrived in the film.
GUYS & DOLLS is the story of petty criminals and gamblers, and the women who love them. While Skye Masterson (Alan Alda) is a high roller with a penchant for playing craps games, Nathan Detroit (Sam Levene) runs an illegal "floating craps game" and has been engaged to his fiancee, Miss Adelaide (the wonderful Vivian Blaine) for fourteen years. Adelaide is a burlesque dancer at the Cat Trap (I think the name is self-explanatory). Skye makes a deal with Nathan to snag a "doll" and take her to Havana, the craps game. He finds Sarah Brown (Isabel Bigley), sargaent of the Save-A-Soul mission, and agrees to bring her a dozen sinners, in exchange for a date.
Some of the best music by Frank Loesser is here. My personal favorite songs include "I'll Know," "A Bushel and Peck," "Adelaide's Lament," and "Luck Be a Lady." The cast is marvelous and charismatic. Vivian Blaine is hilarious as the long-suffering fiancee. She plays Adelaide as a beautiful, wonderfully comedic pin-up girl to the hilt. You hear anyone else playing this role, and you just can't shake Blaine's incomparable performance. The singing is strong and the story is filled with shenanigans that will definitely hold your attention through to the end of the album. Classic!
Guys and Dolls: Great cd.......2007-05-21
I bought this because I wanted to get the soundtrack from the movie with Marlon Brando, and Jean Simmons. This cd was the closest thing I could find; it has the broadway version but also some songs from the movie. The music is wonderful, and the cd is great!
One of the All Time Greats.......2007-04-07
What a pleasure to hear the original Broadway cast recording of this musical comedy classic! The CD contains what they call "Bonus Tracks" taken from the movie version. I heartily recommend skipping these altogether - why listen to Marlon Brando whisper his way through "Luck Be a Lady" when you can hear Robert Alda deliver it the way it was meant to sung?
one of the all-time greats.......2007-03-07
GUYS AND DOLLS, with a score by Frank Loesser, is one of the great milestones in the American musical theatre. Based on the colourful and comedic characters created by Damon Runyon, the show originally opened on Broadway at the 46th Street Theatre in 1950, and went on to run for 1,200 performances.
The story concerns a handsome young gambler called Sky Masterson, who makes a bet with Nathan Detroit that he will be able to seduce 'mission doll' Sarah Brown. A subplot features Nathan's long-suffering fiancee Miss Adelaide as she conspires to get Nathan firmly down the matrimonial aisle.
The original, unforgettable cast included Sam Levene (as Nathan Detroit), Isabel Bigley (as Sarah Brown), Robert Alda (as Sky Masterson), and Vivian Blaine (as Miss Adelaide). They imbue their characters with lots of warmth and feeling, transcending the cartoon caricatures to create full-blooded, emotional beings.
The score by Frank Loesser includes so many wonderful numbers, including Sarah's jubilant, post-Bacardi milkshake "If I Were a Bell"; "I've Never Been in Love Before", "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat", and "Adelaide's Lament".
This new CD reissue from Decca Broadway also includes four worthwhile bonus tracks, from the 1955 film soundtrack of GUYS AND DOLLS. Marlon Brando (Sky) performs "A Woman in Love", and "Luck Be a Lady"; and joins Jean Simmons (Sarah) for "I'll Know". Ms Simmons also delights with her rendition of "If I Were a Bell".
One of the essential titles in any Broadway collection.

Guys and Dolls.......2007-02-09
I saw this show on it first tour across the country. What fun to hear the songs again. I wish there were DVDs of Broadway productions because the movie didn't hold the same interest.

The "gentleman honky-tonker" pulls off a rather difficult feat on these 20 tunes: he polishes up the primitive honky-tonk style of Hank Williams and mentor Ernest Tubb without completely pulling up the roots. He achieves a refined and graceful sound without resorting to overblown arrangements, oceans of strings, or sappy material; he handles delicate ballads with sensitivity, not sentimentality. Much of his success results from his tight-knit, subtly charming band, which includes electric guitarist Sammy Pruett and pedal-steel man Johnny Sibert. Tubb gave Smith his first chart-topper, "Don't Just Stand There," while the expressive "Are You Teasing Me" comes from the Louvin Brothers. Little-known Freddie Hart provided Smith's biggest hit, "Loose Talk," and Boudleaux Bryant, Nashville's original full-time songwriter, penned five of these gems. Rather than ignore tradition, Smith infuses it with elegance. --Marc Greilsamer

PLEASED.......2006-08-25
VERY WELL PLEASED WITH THE ITEM I PURCHASED AND THE PURCHASE TRANSACTION. ALL WENT AS EXPECTED.
Real country music!.......2006-07-25
I bought this for my husband who is a die-hard country music fan, but only from the good old days. He says the music passing for country today is not country music. His collection includes, of course, Hank Williams, Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, and other classic country artists. I knew he would love this Carl Smith CD, and he does! It's classic country, back in the days when country was country!
My favorite song on this CD is I Overlooked an Orchid. That song always brings tears to my eyes. It's just an all around great collection of songs from one of the great country artists.
Genuine Country.......2006-02-21
Love it! Genuine Country music from one of the greatest artists in the industry.
Country the way country SHOULD be!.......2004-06-29
Next to Hank Williams, this is THE man! Carl Smith!! I've been a real fan of his since I was about 7 or 8. He was a big favorite with my dad. It rubbed off.
Believe it or not, we only had one Carl Smith album the whole time I was growing up. We had "The Carl Smith Special" which as near as I can tell by using Columbia's numbering system was released in late '67 or early '68. It was a superb record. I still have it! So when I heard this disc for the first time, even though it was a bit different due to the changes in style and recording and so on, I didn't need any time to settle in to its sound. Man, he was gooood!
I really hope that eventually some day some company will release some of the 60's country albums in their original form. Country music was phenomenal during that decade! Carl Smith's albums (I've since acquired more) were among the cream of the crop at that time. Their release is long over due.
As for this disc, FANTASTIC!!!
The title is accurate this time.......2004-02-12
Record companies use titles like Essential, Best of and Greatest hits out of habit, even where the contents do not fit the title. On this occasion, they got it right. Carl Smith was hugely successful at the time but he has now faded into obscurity, leaving a vast legacy of recorded music and a magnificent daughter, Carlene Carter, who had some notable successes in her own singing career and who eventually covered You are the one (the last song on this collection). Yes, Carl was married to June Carter, better remembered as the wife of Johnny Cash, for a time.
Time plays strange tricks in popular music and less successful (at the time) artists like the Louvin Brothers are better recognized. Of course, the Louvin brothers deserve their recognition, which owes a lot to excellent cover versions of their songs by Emmylou and others. Actually, one of their songs is included here (Are you teasing me) so Carl is also grateful for their songwriting skills. Carl has been less lucky in having his legacy immortalized via cover versions, although Porter and Dolly did a great cover of If teardrops were pennies, while Mickey Gilley was more successful with I overlooked an orchid than Carl had been.
One of the other interesting aspects of this collection is that several of the songs were written or co-written by Boudleaux Bryant - this was before the Everly brothers came along to enchant the world with the classic Bryant songs like Bye bye love and All I have to do is dream. Among the Bryant songs here are Hey Joe (revived in the eighties by Moe Bandy and Joe Stampley with a modified title, Hey Moe Hey Joe) and It's a lovely lovely world (also revived in the eighties, this time by Gail Davies).
This is a collection of fifties country music at its most traditional. Perhaps the appeal of this type of music is limited these days but Carl was one of the best country singers of his generation. If you enjoy the music of Hank Williams and Ernest Tubb, you will surely enjoy this collection.

A founding father of electric blues in general and Texas blues in particular, guitarist T-Bone Walker influenced countless blues players and, by extension, countless rock & rollers as well. The Complete Imperial Recordings date from the early to mid-1950s, when the idea of electric blues was really taking hold, and the two-disc set is a wealth of classic songs exquisitely performed. While definitely blues, there's more difference between this and the acoustic blues that predated Walker than amplification can account for; there's jazz and swing mixed in as well, as on tracks like "I Walked Away" and "Strollin' with Bone," and something of that feel has remained in electric blues ever since. From B.B. King to Buddy Guy to Stevie Ray Vaughan and beyond, Walker's influence is felt in the blues up through the present day. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Blues Master.......2007-07-05
TBone is the best in my book. I like the smoothness of his music. I heard the Allman Brothers state on a live album many yrs ago that "Stormy Monday" was an old "Tbone Walker song." I guess I got curious and bought a casette tape by TBone at the time.... This was when I decided that he is my favorite of all Blues Musicians. These CD's include some of his best work. Glad to find it on CD.
FATHER OF ELECTRIC BLUES.......2006-09-29
T-Bone not only invented the electric blues but he still remains it's most towering stylist and symbol of pure cool. T-Bone's smokey after hours blues is still one of the most vital parts of the genre. Smooth is the key word here. T-Bone's singing and playing never lacked the smooth quality that was T-Bone Walker. He could sing songs of misery and hurt with incredibly deep soul but still manage to keep it cool. This set is a fantastic value! Each track stands on it's own merit. I don't have a favorite here because all are top notch.
You won't be disappointed.
I have nothing but pure admiration for "Bone..." .......2006-05-06
The late "T-Bone" Walker, a pioneering mastre of the electric blues guitar and a close friend/ certainly unremitting influence on my Uncle "Pee Wee" Crayton another "axe-handler" during the immediate postwar era. However, avoiding comparisons, Uncle "Pee Wee" Crayton brought enough "heat" and daring innovation to his playing to avoid being labeled as a mere "T-Bone" copy-"kat."
As a young teen in the early 70's, I was extremely fortunate to experience the greatness of his "vibes" up close and personal...on many occasions, I would soak-up like a sponge and weld to memory those rare meetings when the "Texas 3" (1) Uncle "Pee Wee" (2) "T-Bone" Walker and (3) "Big Joe" Turner (another pioneering mastre blues singer, even though he was born in Kansas City, MO., he sang like he was from the state of Texas...) would get together at "Pee Wee's" house in West Los Angeles, California, and rehearse all day on Saturdays or Sunday afternoons up until the late evenings, just before going to there "gig" at the Perisan Room (a defunct legendary popular "night-spot" during the 1960's - late '80's located on the southwest corner of La Brea Avenue & Washington Blvd., of which now sits a U.S. Postal Station). These Complete Imperial Recordings: 1950-1954 are nothing but short from shear enjoyment fo' da soul...buy the CD you won't be disappointed!
Those were exhilarating times to say the least!
--"Big Dave" Burleigh, 'AmeriCanadian' Record Producre.
you will be jumpin' and swinging in no time.......2005-12-10
T-Bone sweet T-Bone - he is the founder of modern blues - and I think he does not get enough credit for his influence on jazz guitar. Kenny Burrell, in fact, has mentioned that T-Bone was one of his early influences. He certainly has a sweet tone, and he has a nice voice too. Pair this with a hot horn section, and this cd is a steal at 10 bucks. T-Bone is a classic.
Fine collection of Walker's Imperial sides.......2004-01-22
Not quite as seminal as "The Complete Capitol/Black & White Recordings", this is nervetheless an excellent collection of T-Bone Walker's 52 sides recorded for Lew Chudd's Imperial Records.
Unlike the Capitol and Black & White-waxings, this double-disc set features almost no alternate takes, just the masters and a couple of 78 versions (the only exceptions being a few alternates that have been chosen over the original masters).
And there is plenty of great stuff here...no "Mean Old World" or "Stormy Monday", sure, but a lot of excellent songs like "Glamour Girl", "The Hustle Is On", "Tell Me What's The Reason", "I'm About To Lose My Mind", "Cold, Cold Feeling," and the classic instrumental "Strollin' With Bones".
This music is not meant to be listened to in one long sitting, obviously...even lead guitar innovator Walker's smoky, jazz-flavoured blues isn't quite varied enough for that, and if you're just looking for a place to start, you should go for Rhino's "Blues Masters: The Very Best Of T-Bone Walker", or the excellent "T-Bone Blues" album from Atlantic.
But these 136 minutes of music is a very fine collection for the fan who wants more, and a great tribute to the most influential electric guitar player of all time, the idiom's first true lead guitarist, and still one of its best.

From Avenue A to the Great White Way is a two-CD set that collects 50 songs tracing the early recorded history of Jewish music in New York and the subsequent influence that music had on American popular song. Henry Sapoznik, the producer of The Yiddish Radio Project series that appeared on PBS, compiled the tracks. He's unearthed some fascinating items, including rare recordings from early stars of the Yiddish theater such as Molly Picon, a klezmer piece by Abe Schwartz, and a beautifully operatic performance from the cantor Yossele Rosenblatt. Among his most interesting finds are the previously unreleased track from 1914 of Irving Berlin singing his song "What Am I Gonna Do?" and a vocal group from 1933 known as the Funnyboners singing the obscure Gershwin tune "Mischa-Yascha-Toscha-Sascha." Sapoznik's excellent liner notes do a fine job of connecting the dots between such seemingly disparate songs as the 1928 Yiddish song "Inzer Rebin's Vunder (Our Rabbi's Wonder)" and Cab Calloway's 1939 swing tune "Utt-Da-Zay (That's the Way)." While it would have been nice to have translation of the Yiddish lyrics, that is just a minor quibble with what is a otherwise intriguing survey of long overlooked part of American musical history. --Michael Simmons

From Avenue A.......2003-03-31
If not for this album, one might never have known that Fannie Brice was sent to the lower east side of New York so she could sound more stereotypically Jewish, or that Jewish vaudeville performers found success in "best Hebe contests" and songs like "Cohen Owes Me Ninety-Seven Dollars." This is the world of From Avenue A to the Great White Way: Yiddish and American Popular Songs from 1914-1950. The double CD set has extensive liner notes and photos acting almost like an historical document into a world that, for better or worse, many younger Jewish people inherited but never knew existed.
If you remember Molly Goldberg calling "yoo-hoo" on the old radio show The Goldbergs then you'll probably remember Eddie Cantor singing about Leena from Palestina. That's just one of the oldies featured, many of which sound like and come from the same era as You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile from the musical Annie.
The double CD set begins with the old style Yiddish theater songs from people like Molly Picon and David Medoff. It continues chronologically hitting upon the vaudeville era and into the jazz age.
Many tunes seem self-depreciating like Since Henry Ford Apologized to Me and When Nathan Was Married to Rose of Washington Square. Other tracks are by non-Jewish performers who jumped on the bandwagon like Cab Calloway of Minnie the Moocher fame and Slim Galliard with a song called Matzo Balls. The album ends with Jewish jazz performers such as Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa.
Although well known performers such Al Jolson and Irving Berlin are here, most of the tracks have been completely forgotten or lost making this a collection of things one has either never heard before or only heard on the radio when they first came out. The sound quality of the songs is very good for their age, having been re-mastered from the original 78 rpm records.
For some this will bring back some great memories, and those that can't understand shouldn't criticize. Others will be disgusted at the depiction of Jewish people in such a manner. Perhaps this was "what made Sammy run" to assimilate into the great White way of America. It's a real shame because there are some real gems on hear that were performed with the purest of intentions.
Gevald! Di Bananas and das pernicious influence.......2002-09-09
Darn that pernicious Jewish influence in American music. (hehe) If there was a Grammy for this category, Henry Sapoznik and his posse would receive it without question. The CD's are made to look like an old Columbia 78 RPM. The 14 page liner notes are very good; they include photos of the most famous singers, and a picture of "vaudeville" in Yiddish characters and a line outside The Grand Theater's "King Lear." They exclude the lyrics, however. After listening to the first CD three times, I was ready to move on to the second CD. Is this Himmel? You bet! Let's not forget that the Yiddish Theater of Manhattan's Second Avenue had Shakespeare and musicals while Broadway was in the dark ages of entertainment, awaiting O'Neill. Sapoznik has compiled 50 pieces from newly found vaulted stampers, including: a very sexy English and French piece by Al Jolson (Hooray Baby and Me); Julien Rose's Chicken story; a previously unissued version of "Mischa Yascha Toscha Sascha" (1933) by the Funnyboners (Gershwins and others) with apologies to Jack Benny; "Roumania Roumania" by Aaron Lebedeff (1941); "Bei Mir Bis Du Schon" by Belie Baker (1937); and "What Am I Gonna Do?" (1914) by Irving Berlin (never released before). Yoselle Rosenblatt is the soloist in "V'Hakohanim" (1916); and Molly Picon sings "Ihr Megt Gleybn Oder Neyn" in a previously unissued performance from 1933. "Yes, Sir, Zi Iz May Kale (Yes Sire She's My Bride/Baby)" is sung by Peisachke Burstein (1925). Eddie Cantor sings "Palesteena" (1920), and one wonders if there are some hidden meanings in the words. Abe Schwartz appears with his 1918 "Der Shtiller Bulgar," a current standard of every klezmer group. "Yosel," a Yiddish standard, is performed by Nellie Casman in Yiddish (1923). The same song is reprised in 1938 in "Joseph, Joseph" by Trombonist Russ Morgan and Orchestra, sung in English by Carolyn Clarke. Amazing! "Since Henry Ford Apologized To Me" by the Happiness Boys (1927) is an amazing find; the satirical song reacts to Ford and his Dearborn Press' virulent anti-Semitism. The "Yiddisha Charleston" also includes a jab at Henry Ford. Xavier Cugat and His Orchestra (in pre-Charo 1950) perform "The Wedding Samba" so well with Abbe Lane that you might as well be in Miami Beach while listening to it. Both Benny Goodman and his break-away drummer, Gene Krupa, appear in the final two cuts. But by far, my favorite cut, worth the purchase, hands down is "Whoopee" by Peisachke Burstein. Impossible to get out of one's head after one listen.

Cole's best years were with the trio..........2001-09-19
This 2nd volume of vocal numbers with the Trio covers the years of 1947 - 1950. Recorded before Nat was to become more of a "pop" vocalist and receive backing from arrangers like Gordon Jenkins and Nelson Riddle, the work done with the trio reveals a jazzier side of this great vocalist - not only can he sing but he was incredible jazz pianist with a style that was light and fun. The arrangements for piano, guitar, and bass are always tight and pulled off with perfection. Add to these numbers Nat's "smooth as silk" delivery and you've got a winning collection of standards including "What'll I Do", "Makin' Whoopee", "Too Marvelous for Words", and "Dream a Little Dream of Me".
The sound is slightly better than volume 1. There is a little hiss throughout BUT when you consider the age of these recordings and the generally quiet and open nature of a small jazz combo (i.e. nothing loud to cover up the hiss) it's perfectly understandable and it in no should detract from the enjoyment of the these performances.
Also pick up the 1942 - 1946 collection to round out the collection. There's a third volume which contains only istrumental numbers but part of the magic of these recordings is Nat's voice.

Irving Berlin's Wild West Show-themed romp Annie Get Your Gun has long been a Broadway evergreen, including a wildly successful modern revival starring Bernadette Peters and Tom Wopat. But its original 1950 MGM film translation was fraught with production problems and recasting; Judy Garland was initially signed to star and even recorded her vocal numbers before being dismissed (due largely to her notorious personal problems) and replaced by Betty Hutton. While several of Garland's performances as Annie Oakley have been released on other compilations, this generous, 31-cut release not only marks the CD debut of the film's original soundtrack (originally just eight tracks), it compiles all of the various Garland versions (including the first release of a spectacular stereo Garland version of "There's No Business Like Show Business") onto its second half, essentially re-creating the "Annie that never was," in addition to the first complete release of the Hutton score. Also included is a superbly illustrated and well-annotated booklet that tells the complete story of the show's Broadway origins and rocky journey to Hollywood. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
A great buy!.......2006-07-08
This CD is well worth the money. If you loved the movie and want to relive the thrill and energy of the production while driving or around the house - get this CD you won't be sorry. I want to point out that some other reviews said Betty Hutton was not as good as Judy Garland. Not true. Betty's ability to sing in the accent she spoke in brought the character and performace to life. Judy's great but not great at everything.
The two Annies.......2006-03-13
I was very pleased with this CD because it not only had the original movie musical soundtrack, but also included the versoin with Judy Garland that was scrapped when she was replaced by Betty Hutton.
Buy it for the movie it could of been.......2005-03-13
I bought this especially for the "missing " Garland soundtracks. And yes , anything Hutton sang, Judy sang better. It goes to prove that as a singer, Betty was a struggling artisan, croaking out the words badly at times. Whereas, when Judy the artist sings, you can feel every emotion and nuance that you would expect from a great artist.
Even though the movie version with Hutton isn't the greatest, it's still worthy of getting for your collection. Hutton's version adds a bit of zaniness to the character that neither Judy, or Ethel would want to attempt. With Garland the movie would have been entirely different, and knowing Judy's ability to rise to the occassion, it probably would have been better. After all, there is a reason why she has been known as the "world's greatest entertainer". Even in her outtakes that were supposed to be "so horrible", she seemed to have that performers ability to entertain. (I felt her outtakes were better than Hutton's finished performances.)
That being said, this soundtrack gives you an idea of what a Garland Annie could have been like. Its kind of fun to compare and contrast. Hutton did give her Annie a slapstick, comedic take that makes it fun to watch, and she did give it her all. Its amazing to hear the Garland naysayers, though. For one, Judy was always beautiful as an artist and as a person. Secondly, everyone has a favorite Judy Garland movie whether it be Oz, or Meet me in st louis, or Girl Crazy, or A Star is Born. Each of her characters were different and her co-stars and chemistry were different, yet each perfomance was done beautifully. I have to give the little lady the benefit of the doubt. I think Judy Garland would have been a terrific Annie Oakley.
I love this CD.......2004-04-05
I was a little nervous ordering this CD because I thought it would be poor quality based on the reviews. I was very pleasantly surprised and enjoy the music. The CD includes Both Betty Hutton and Judy Garland. ( I prefer Betty Hutton) and 2x Howard Keel. If you like the music from Annie get your gun, you will enjoy!
Betty Get Your Gun.......2003-11-23
The only reason I'm giving this CD 5 stars is because of Betty Hutton....Judy Garland can sing and is an amazing actress, lets not overlook that, but she brought nothing to Annie Oakley. She didn't have an accent in any of the few outtakes they have of her, she shows no enthusiasum, and Betty Hutton just outmatches her beyond imagination. If you like the Judy Garland outtakes I'm holding nothing against you, I just don't think she did anything good for the role.

Memories of High School and College.......2007-03-22
I already owned this one, and bought it for a high school and college classmate who had fond memories of the songs on this recording. As one can imagine, it was "a hit". Delivered on time, as usual.
Great collection, but short.......2005-11-16
Whenever you think of 50's music, you usually think of rock & roll, yet that never grew until 1955. So, what was around in the 50's til then? That's why I bought this CD.
Surprisingly, some of the songs on here wouldn't be too out of place on a 50's RnR album, most notably, "How High the Moon", "Cry" and "Come On-a My House", all from 1951. The rest is post-war pop.
The least interesting thing about this album is that the 10 songs here are so short that the album doesn't even last half an hour. Like others have said about the series, they should've included more than 10 songs. Still, it's a worthwhile album if you're into vintage pop.
