Customer Reviews:
Ride On Black Mule ... RIP Grant McLennan.......2006-05-08
Melodic, atmospheric, timeless ... it's a nice listen. Produced by Dave Dobbyn.
8 May, 2006: Grant McLennan, singer-songwriter with legendary Australian group the Go-Betweens, has died in Australia. He was 48.
McLennan died in his sleep at his home in Brisbane. It is thought that he suffered a heart attack.
Melodic and Middle of the Road Pop.......2004-07-07
Grant Mclennan's first solo effort, outside of the Go-Betweens, is quite impressive 12 years after its first release. Mclennan's songwriting and melodics are exquisite, and falls under the same vein as Glenn Tilbrook, Neil Finn, and possibly Graham Parker as a variety of songwriters that tend to add a little poetics and narrative within a catchy pop tune - check out the single off the album, "Easy Come Easy Go."
However, Watershed has a few elements that sound outdated, such as the instrumentation (the drums sound like a drum machine), and the production, which keeps its late 1980s and early 1990s sound. I wasn't quite interested in "Putting The Wheels Back On" with its pseudo-dance beat vibe. Despite that aspect, the album stands out lyrically and melodically with the song "Haven't Been a Fool." In addition, Mclennan attempts at adding a little country twang with "Just Get That Straight." This is a record that is definitely great while driving on road trips with the windows or top rolled down. So turn it up!
Quirky, hummable pop.......2001-08-02
I can't believe this disc is 10 years old! It seems like just yesterday that I bought it.
I love Grant McLennan's songwriting style. In his songs he juxtaposes words and images in a very unique, almost cinematic way. His music is straightforward and vibrantly produced and played. I picture him as a perpetually disappointed romantic, but without the dark edges of a total cynic.
I loved this album from the moment I bought it, and it is still a desert island disc. His other solo albums are also excellent.
Some day I'd like to ask him why he's wearing a SF 49ers cap on the album cover!
Stunningly Good!.......2001-06-21
I was never what you could call a huge Go-Betweens fan. A greatest hits disc did me just fine because each of their albums seemed to have about two songs that I really liked. The rest seemed like passable filler. I figured the same would apply for the Go-Between's frontman Grant McLennan's solo material. I got a copy of Horsebreaker Star and was pleasantly surprised to like quite a few songs there. Then I got this disc, Watershed, and was blown away! Hardly anyone knows this album exists which is a huge shame. There really isn't a bad song on it while several are stunning. "When Word Gets Around", "Easy Come Easy Go", "Putting the Wheels Back On", and "Sally's Revolution" should have gotten plenty of radio airplay if most American radio stations had any sense for fun, quality music.
The bottom line: BUY THIS DISC no matter how much or how little you know about GM or the Go-Betweens! It really is a fine disc with Grant's guitar and intelligent songwriting making this a great (and often quite amusing) body of work.
Another great McLennan album (Collect all four!).......1999-12-30
Grant McLennan (see also G.W. McLennan) -- half (with Robert Forster) of the songwriting team of the defunct Go-Betweens -- has four 5-star albums that virtually NO one has heard of. What a shame! There isn't a bad track on any of his albums, and this early album is not quite as good as the last two (Horsebreaker Star, In Your Bright Ray), but his tunes always ring true, and his rhymes and lyrics never fail to amuse (and, occasionally, confuse). Buy the entire set!

The best Rock and Roll.......2003-08-10
If Buddy Holly were making music today, he would sound exactly like Watershed! They are the quintessential rock and roll band. I just wish there were more bands like them. Just like The More It Hurts... all of their albums display the best in feel good, have fun, sway with your friends, good music. If it weren't for Watershed I would have given up on music altogether. Way to go!
Watershed is back with a vengence!.......2002-12-13
A few years ago I was at a Watershed show and they played some of their "new" material that was going to be part of thier next album. Absolutely blew me away. After years of anticipation The More it Hurts, The more it Works has finally arrived. It lives up to every expectation and beyond. These hard-working musicians never gave up after being dropped from Epic and now finally seem poised for the big time. The pairing of this group and Tim Patalan (Sponge,Hoarse) works perfectly to being out Watershed's true potential. This album is filled with catchy rock athems that will be in your head for days and must be experienced at full volume. These guys stick to their roots and are rock true and through. Drinking, high energy, and fun shows. This disc captures the true Watershed spirit. If you are going to purchase one of their discs this is the one to get.
*Now* I'm a fan..........2002-12-09
Apart from the moderate liking of "Black Concert T-Shirt" back in the mid 90's, I was never an overly big fan of Watershed. Occasionally they'd release a recording to local radio that was generally unimpressive, although never objectionable. But after hearing the surprisingly phenominal songs "Can't Be Myself" and "Anniversary" on the radio, I found myself getting this CD. And I'm glad I did. An amazing collection of indie rock (rather than "Melodic hook filled power pop" as described above) where every song is unique rather than being a rehash of the same song over and over. Not every song hits the mark, but nearly all of them do -- and it makes for a CD you'll be singing to in no time. Take it from someone who owns over 200 CD's (nearly all of which are small and indie bands) -- and therefore someone who's extremely critical about new music -- this is a CD to buy.
Rockativity In Spades.......2002-08-29
What a great record. Unlike so many releases this year, The More It Hurts The More It Works delivers the rock. It kicks you in your face, then cradles you as if to say everything is going to fine, only to blast you again with crushing 4x4 time. It's a well-balanced album that I can't stop listening to. If you gotta rock, you gotta get this ablum.
Looking for GOOD music?.......2002-06-26
Give this band a listen. Look for their newest cd (Fifth of July). Very, very good.

Rocked Annapolis.......2006-08-16
I saw these guys twice last week when they opened up for The Clarks. I was only going to see The Clarks on Thursday when they played in Annapolis, MD; but decided to see them again because Watershed was their opening act. These guys like to have fun on stage and you can hear it in their music. Awesome!

We want to hear more of this band on the radio.
Consistently Great Music.......2005-03-23
Watershed has been producing excellent music since I can remember. Catchier and more upbeat than their somewhat-depressing "Hurts/Works" album. I didn't take to this album on first listen, but I can't seem to take it out of the player lately.
I still can't figure out why these guys haven't run the nation yet. Maybe the radio is scared...

This CD was made in 1994. It is a great CD. You should hear them now (2002). Unbelievable band! They are excellent to see in concert as well. These guys will be famous one day. They are releasing a new CD this year. I would suggest you be on the lookout for it and give it a listen. You will be amazed if you have never heard them. You will be even more amazed if you do know of them. They have progressed so well and fine tuned their music.

Album Description
Now based in Milwaukee, Mary Karlzen has just released her latest album, "Dim The Watershed".
A long time South Florida area favorite, Karlzen is extremely proud of the new album, which she co-produced with Fred Freeman and Mark Bryan (guitarist for Hootie and The Blowfish). With her unique blend of folk, rock and pop combined with her signature vocal and songwriting style, Mary has crafted the finest work of her career!
The album was recently released on South Florida indie; Y&T Music and is now available at Amazon.com. ///
Customer Reviews:
Great album!.......2003-10-28
Mary Karlzen is another one of the relatively unknown musical artists that would have been commercially succesful in the '70s before the pop-culture descended into the putrid mockery of music that it is today. Mary is a gifted songwriter and singer, and Dim the Watershed is fantastic, even better than her previous effort Yelling at Mary. Every song here is strong and moving. Especially Time, Pictures of You and Wonderland. Songs like these reveal how impressive her writing talents really are. A treasure amongst the corporate crap that floods the market these days. If you like Patty Griffin you'll like Mary Karlzen. If you're unfamiliar with both, you're really missing out on some truly great rock music of the singer/songwriter genre.
