Clarinetist and tenor saxophonist Ken Vandermark has such broad tastes that he has played in up to 18 ensembles at the same time, each with a different stylistic focus. The Crown Royals churn out gutbucket R&B, the AALY Trio revisits '60s-informed free jazz, and the Chicago Bridge Unit plays standards from the '50s and '60s. This quintet is where he puts it all together by playing complex original compositions that integrate swinging rhythms, feedback-laden rock textures, and free-form dynamics. Several tunes express a film noir ambience that resonates with the disc's handsome packaging and betrays Vandermark's past as a film major in college, but the band plays them with a gritty pugnacity that is emphatically contemporary. The album's name acknowledges the well-oiled chemistry that the quintet has developed on the job by playing a weekly gig at Chicago's Empty Bottle for over three years. The group negotiates the difficult transitions between Vandermark's complex, colorful horn charts and collectively improvised passages with deceptive ease. --Bill Meyer

5 out of 5 stars 2007 Grammy Award Winner for Latin Jazz Album of the Year!.......2007-03-18

This 2007 Grammy Award winning CD is one of the finest jazz, latin jazz or world music albums of the past decade. Gifted trumpeter, arranger and composer Brian Lynch created a multigenerational multicultural musical document likely to gain in importance for years to come.

The great salsa/latin jazz pianist and bandleader Eddie Palmieri (9-time Grammy Award Winner) is paired with living jazz legends like Phil Woods and Mario Rivera, along with a host of the finest jazz musicians from the next two generations - Donald Harrison, Conrad Herwig, Boris Kozlov, Greg Tardy, Edsel Gomez, Robby Ameen, Dafnis Prieto, Ruben Rodriguez, Little Johnny Rivero, Giovanni Hidalgo and more - in musical settings that bridge generations, marry cultures and swing like hell. The wonderful Mexican singer, Lila Downs, makes her debut in a jazz context on two fantastic tracks.

When Suzy Bogguss released her debut album, Somewhere Between, in 1989, Chet Atkins wrote the liner notes, saying, "Her voice sparkles like crystal water." It did, but it also quickly drained away without leaving a mark. Bogguss has always had a pretty soprano, but it never seemed connected to any emotion or tradition worth caring about. It's only on her sixth album, Simpatico, which is co-credited to Atkins, that she has at last made music worthy of her talent. "You Bring Out the Best is Me" is one of the 10 songs on the album, and it summarizes Atkins' effect on Bogguss. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Too bad this one's Out Of Print.......2007-01-19

Here is a disc that will remind you why just about everybody loved Chet Atkins. Like so many other artists, Chet helped Suzy Bogguss get her start. From working together, they decided they'd like to do an album together and what an effort it turned out to be!

The smoothness of Suzy's voice is in perfect harmony with Chet's playing in that spare "just right" style he had. The production allows Suzy's singing and Chet's playing to be present in the mix and even to an untrained ear they sound exceptional.

This album is a good example of what's happening in music today. As good as this one is, it should be judged a classic and never go out of print. However because not many people even know about it, you have to do like I did and search it out from a second hand source. By my humble judgment, it was sure worth the effort.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 rating. Kinda misses the mark........2004-05-21

Darn. This album opens with a fun, jauntily stripped-down acoustic version of the Jimmie Rodgers oldie, "In The Jailhouse Now" -- exactly the kind of sound I was hoping this album would have -- but it soon slides into soft, over-orchestrated Nashville pop, stuff that misses the mark, as far as I'm concerned. There are a couple of tunes that dip back into the simpler style (and they are also pretty nice), but this is one of those guess-they-just-can't-help-themselves outings in which two talented artists who have sometimes-rootsy leanings let their love of studio technique get the best of them. These two are, indeed, simpatico, but it extends to the poppy stuff as well as the more traditional. Bogguss & Atkins fans probably won't be disappointed, but grumpy traditionalists like myself will find this a bit too goopy.

5 out of 5 stars "Simpatico" is Sympatico.......2003-03-12

Exquisite! Suzy Bogguss is at the top of this genre, and Chet Atkins' participation ensures that this disk is true gold.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly Howard Shore's best work yet..........2006-08-24

I've always enjoyed Howard Shore's work, even way before he became a household name with the mammoth scores for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I personally feel that he is at his best when doing the scores for Cronenberg's works.

With Naked Lunch, I think Shore managed to create a perfect soundscape to go along with director David Cronenberg's crazed adaptation of William Burrough's cult novel. Shore, along with famed saxophonist Ornette Coleman, join together to create a strange hybrid of mood music and frenetic jazz that fits the film perfectly. This isn't typical jazz and is very free form but still, it's definitely one of the best film scores I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. It's not for everyone but if you appreciate a good, moody movie score, look no further for this is one of the absolute best.

Lastly, it reminds me a bit of the score that he did for "The Cell", due to the Middle East sounding bits laced throughout the album and out of all of his scores, I'd say it resembles that one the most. The lonely saxophone also reminds me of the score for "Angel Heart", the sax in which was played by Courtney Pine.

For those complaining about the lack of longevity from modern rock bands, we point you to The Charlatans UK. Sixteen years and nine studio albums into their career, Simpatico finds these Northwich baggy veterans not quite at the top of their game, but endeavouring to drag their groove-led Hammond rock sound into intriguing new territories. Most interesting is an apparent influence of dub reggae on the traditional Charlatans sound, an influence that crops up on the coolly cynical "For Your Entertainment" and again on "City Of The Dead", a ska-tinged harmonica lament accompanied by haunted backing vocals that harks back to the urban decay of The Specials' "Ghost Town". Less successful is "NYC (There's No Need To Stop)"--an apparent stab at the voguish Big Apple punk-disco as practised by LCD Soundsystem, but one that suffers from clumsy execution, and isn't helped along by frontman Tim Burgess' rather clichéd lyrics: "Underground counterculture/Eat you up like a hungry vulture". Newcomers will find The Charlatans' back catalogue a more rewarding place to start, but fans will be delighted there's more to Simpatico than simple organ-riffing retread.--Louis Pattison

Album Description

The first U.S release in five years from the Charlatans U.K finds the band reestablishing itself as one of the legendary Brit Pop bands. By combining the swirling guitar psychedelica that has influenced everyone from The Stone Roses to Oasis and updating their sound to incorporate hints of dub and reggae, SIMPATICO. is an album that finds the Charlatans UK dancing with brilliance on a most welcome comeback.

4 out of 5 stars Reggatta de...Burgess.......2007-03-09

In my opionion, the first track, Blackend Blue Eyes should have been on a James Bond soundtrack. It is HUGE sounding with a backing string section, er so it sounds. NYC is dancy and funky and all around a good time. In short the rest of the album is something entirely different than the first two tracks. Something different but still very good (though not typically Charlatans). It is steeped in 1980's reggaefied new wave/punk of that era (Police, Clash, Specials, Elvis Costello etc.) Some tracks echo roots-rock from that decade as well. A very good collecton of music but not as much an album as was Up At The Lake. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A great, solid album.......2006-11-16

Simpatico is the Charlatans' most recent album (as of 2006) and while it isn't their best album, it is still an excellent document of their later period (and current) sound. The album opens up with a classic Charlatans track, Blackened Blue Eyes, which ranks up there with their best singles. It's followed by NYC, which is pretty lightweight but fun, although the lyrical cliches are a little cheesy. It seems that the Charlatans are determined to have a song that harkens back to 2001's Wonderland on each subsequent album (NYC and Feel the Pressure off of 2003's Up at the Lake). Anyway, this album does contain some great songs, like Dead Man's Eye, The Architect, For Your Entertainment, City of the Dead, and Road to Paradise. There are also some weak tracks, like Glory Glory, which is rather plodding, and the weak album closer, instrumental Sunset and Vine.

Overall the current Charlatans sound seems to incorporate a lot of dub and reggae, which is not a bad thing since they seem to be able to incorporate it with their traditional British Rock style so well.

All in all, while this isn't their best album, it is a solid and worthy addiiton to their catalog and one worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Simpatico is Fantastico!!.......2006-08-30

Simply put, this album is great through and through. The Charlatans UK have really put together an album that is worthy of praise. It is one of those albums you want to listen to over and over again. I am a fan from back in the day of Some Friendly and I am glad to see they are peak form again.

4 out of 5 stars Best of late Charlatans.......2006-06-17

This CD definitely marks a return to the Charlatans I love. I have all of their CD's and I would put this in the top third. If anything, because of the first two songs (Blackened Blue Eyes & NYC). Other favorites include Muddy Ground, the Architect and Road to Paradise. The songs do tend to be slower than on past releases but who is to say that is a bad thing? They are not ballads, they are just a little slower paced. My one problem is with Sunset & Vine. While definitely not a bad song, I was expecting more from an instrumental. I think this was a good example where they could have sped things up a bit.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked.......2006-06-13

Nice return for the Charlatans. I've been a fan since Indian Rope and Some Friendly, but this is one of the better albums - have been playing it every day for a few weeks now. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars There should be more like this..........2003-10-12

This reminds me a little of the Stan Getz-Kenny Barron collaberation: the rhythm being supplied by an instrument other than bass or drums, and the sax free-flowing over top with plenty of space. Recorded in 1978 on a beach, literally for kicks, the effect is beautiful. It is both Live, and incredibly 'present' as well. Oscar Castro-Neves does a wonderful solo rendition of "Bonita" to begin, and then Klemmer arrives on "My Funny Valentine" and the simpatico between both players and surroundings begins in earnest. A truly unique and wonderful recording - and REALLY well mastered for the best sound I ever heard coming from a night at the beach...

4 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprize.......2002-05-08

At first you might think this pairing of John Klemmer and Oscar to be a bit unusual-and it is. What you find however, are two artists who complement each other beautifully. With the ocean in the backround throughout, these two cover an interesting range of material in an informal jam format. Worth buying if you can find it.

5 out of 5 stars Golden Age of Indy Pop.......2006-06-20

This album is filled with charming meledios and pop harmonies. It is filled with songs that capture the sound of 90's Indy pop.

This album still holds up, as the songs were filled with sincerity, and hope. A must have for any record collection/

5 out of 5 stars Simpatico Never Gets Old.......2005-11-17

This is the first Velocity Girl album I picked up and it's still my favorite Velocity Girl release. From the opening driving riffs of "Sorry Again," this album is relentless, sugary power pop. It's hard to pick a favorite track because they are all so finely crafted, with one song seeming to blend seemlessly into the next, but if I had to I'd pick "The All-Consumer." Sarah Shannon's voice is perfectly suited to the music and on "The All-Consumer" she is accompanied by Archie Moore on harmonies that are simply brilliant.
The lyrics are equally gripping. On "Tripping Wires," Shannon warns, "You know I never liked boys prettier than me, I warned you ... I don't want to know what hides inside infatuation." Brian Nelson adds little guitar hooks here and there that play off the rhythm guitar of Moore.
This is the perfect driving record with its high-energy, hook-filled sugary power-pop (with the exception of the beautiful ballad "Hey You, Get Off My Moon"). "Simpatico" gets me singing along every time and turns a normally boring drive along country roads into a pure pleasure.
And for any price less than $2 this album is a steal! Take it from me, you won't regret purchasing this album.

4 out of 5 stars Blast from the past!.......2005-05-12

Man I can't listen to this album without feeling a wee bit subdued and chilled. It is good, it's catchy, man you hear dem song man and it's like "whoa". I bet Mannie Fresh was thinking about "drug girls" when he was making that song "Real Big" (which is why he sounds so distracted). Come to think about it, that song is genious, he just tells us that he likes oh everything REAL BIG. But by the same token we can say that Velocity Girl likes things real chill, this was from an era when Alternative music didn't mean anything on the radio, it was an actually form of music. And you could say this is alternative (but not by modern day standards unfortunatly. We all know the tragic tale and it's a little too late to get way too revivalistic about it, just appreciate the old music for what it was. I'd have to say that this is a great piece of music from the mid 90's, a mixed decade when it came to good music. Man I'm just distracted cause I'm listening to V. Girl (well) just like Mannie Fresh. He likes everything big, I mean he prolly has like a big watch on his wrist, which would be big enough to be considered a clock but it's a watch cause it's on his wrist. Man who ever watches thier watch? They should call it a glance, of course I haven't had a wrist watch for like a year now so why do I care. Time, time is a... oh where am I. I just don't really need to define this album for you, I mean they have songs samples, 30 seconds of something so awesome you really don't need to tap me on the shoulder and say "hey Mic will ya' tell me about V. Girl's sound." Fool please! Mannie Fresh, oh my what a song that is "real big" he must wear t-shirts that are the size of blankets to men of ordinary stature, almost god-like in apperance he must peer over his shoulder as meer mortals such as you and I see him in public. Real Big they tell me, oh I've lost the numbers, but I think it adds up to an incredable sum, one that is to soon be lost after recitation. This man, rich from his ego, will burn faster in the final days.

5 out of 5 stars Just Awesome.......2003-07-16

This is one of the best cd's I ever bought. In fact, I have two copies, just in case one were to get scratched up. This is pure pop-music perfection. There isn't a bad song on this cd. Sarah Shannon's vocals are so beautifully delicious. The music is just perfect. A step up from their previous effort "Copacetic" which had a lot of distorted guitars. I don't want to go into a song by song review. This is just as perfect as a pop-rock cd can get.

PS- If you like this cd, you may want to also check out Charming's "Champagne & Magazines".

5 out of 5 stars This album is pop at it's finest!.......2002-04-02

Not many people know that Velocity Girl was just behind Nirvana and in terms of Sub Pop sales (!Simpatico! and Copacetic are the number three and four all-time best sellers in Sub Pop's catalogue, behind Nirvana's Bleach and Sebadoh's Bakesale.) The melodies and lyrics on this album are full of energy, jangly guitars, fun lyrics and great harmonies. The playful cover artwork perfectly represents the music on the disc. This album is definately amongst my top 10 albums (I have over 600 CDs). The only thing I regret is never having the opportunity to see Velocity Girl live (they broke up in 1996...sniff). If you buy this album, you will want to buy their entire catalog (sadly only three albums and one EP).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite V5 CD.......2002-11-02

If you are part of the Chicago improvised music scene, Ken Vandermark has left is paw print everywhere. He is a prolific soloist and interested in recording with everyone, from his blues gigs with The Crown Royals, through his punk-jazz collaborations with The Flying Luttenbachers, to his wild Euro blowing with Peter Brotzman and the AALY trio. All of these influnces are brought to bear on Simpatico, perhaps my favorite recording by the famous, or infamous Vandermark 5.

The V5 is a relatively stable ensemble of Chicago improvisers, including the always impressive Jeb Bishop on trombone and guitar. Also impressive is Dave Rempis, who's style, while influenced by the post-Aylerisms of Vandermark and the Europeans, is more lyrical...melodically based, almost like an update of Lee Konitz. The music on this V5 album ranges from all-out free blowing, through the sort of impressionistic slow avant-garde music that seems to have as much to do with the European serialists as it does with jazz, to downright funky jazz and blues numbers...sometimes with a bit of a punk edge. The latter is particularly evident on the tracks that feature Bishop on
noisy, Hendricks-meets-Sonny-Sharrock-styled guitar licks.

Vandermark's influence on the renewal of the Chicago free improvised scene cannot be overstated. This, plus the MacArthur grant he recieved has made him a figure of some stature, but has also made him a punching bag for other, less outwardly successful musicians here in Chitown and throughout the country. While I am really not sure that I feel Vandermark deserves to be singled out as a genius when musicians like Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman and Sam Rivers have been largely ignored by the funding community, Vandermark is an undoubtedly gifted improviser. And he has done much to extend the interest in free improvising past the traditional boundaries of jazz. His fans include many 20-something punks and alternative music types. This can only be healthy for a style of music that, just a few years ago, was considered completely dead. And I, coming from the perspective of a 70's free improviser, can only thank him. This renewal of out music is only a good thing for all of us. (Now if only more of us can find our own style and not mimic Ken or John Zorn, then we will have it made!)

5 out of 5 stars Quality!.......2001-03-09

Vandermark seems to embody quality in music. Whether its V5 or DKV or any other project, the presence of Vandermark lifts every thing he does to a higher level. Even the mammoth 3 disc Brotzmann Octet/tentet on Okka disk (find it-get it) seems to be at its best on Vandermark's compostitions and solos -and that is one awesome group of players.

But what about this title? Yes, its got a noir quality! Yes, there is a rock element to the writing and playing. And yes, its a great session. I have read many reviews of V5 sets that seem to favor one over another and for me the quality is so consistantly high, its scary.

I recommend getting any V5. After that you'll want them all.

5 out of 5 stars once..........2000-04-15

once ken vandermark was awarded a genius grant in the field of jazz...he deserved every penny.

4 out of 5 stars The Vandermark 5 - Simpatico.......2000-01-12

This is a progression from the previous work, "Single Piece Flow", sounding both more assured and confident. A collision of swing, be-bop and free jazz (albeit with restrained interludes), but with added accessibility afforded by the rock-like playing throughout(in particular the rhythm section). This would appeal to indie/rock kids and jazz snobs alike.

3 out of 5 stars DAD could never be bland, but this comes close.......2006-05-13

Darn I love this band. I got into them when they broke with with No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims and followed them through their slightly lesser light of Riskin' It All. But a few years later they were blighting us with this.

Empty Heads isn't much - though the version on their live album is good. And that pretty much sums up this album. It's just so apathetic, the production is dull. The whole thing just reeks of, I don't know - surely not middle age!

There is some quirkiness to be had - Home Alone 4 has a few amusing lines and they are still DAD, so you know there will be some little anecdotes worth a grin.

I was really disappointed with this album. My critical two cents worth is that you should buy Everything Glows and their live double disc instead of this and only get this if you enjoyed those. I don't like to talk down this band, having gotten so much enjoyment out of them, but personal loyalty to one of my fave bands cannot prevent me from stating that this was a serious stumble for these guys.

But worth it for the hard core fans.

4 out of 5 stars A great album.......2006-03-07

I really love this album because of it's mix with heavy and really stripped ballads with lot of passion. This album really grows for every listening and becomes one of my favorites.
D-A-D is always D-A-D. They should be biggest in a perfect world.

4 out of 5 stars Simpatico.......2001-11-02

D.A.D. has always been a band that is about quirky lyrics wrapped around simple melodies and straight ahead rock; the type of music sadly bereft from modern radio.

They don't disappoint with "Simpatico." With lyrics like "I burn the midnight oil, pour it on my salad," (Home Alone 4) and "Everytime that you throw dirt you lose a little ground" (Now or Forever) their spin on American colloquilisms is as strong as ever.

D.A.D. makes music to have fun, but the somber "Hand Without Strength" shows a rarely seen side, and a glimpse of why this band should be as large as Aerosmith or the like.

Barring the disharmony of the title track, this is a complete album and something old D.A.D.fans will enjoy, and also a great introduction for those new to this heavily underrated band.

2 out of 5 stars Harmless and boring!.......2000-03-24

»Simpatico« is the clearly worst release from D:A:D since the band's early cowboy days!

After the really brilliant albums »No Fuel Left For The Pilgrims« and »Riskin' It All« as well as the still interesting »Helpyourselfish«, this one »Simpatico« shows a rock band with nothing left to offer.

The tracks on this album lack originality and willingness. Not only are they composed without fantasy, but they are even played in an unmotivated manner. Like it is simply routine for the formerly so entusiastic D:A:D.

In fact, there is not one single really hearworthy song on »Simpatico«. In general, it is harmless and boring... or at the other extreme like the title track which is unnecessarily noisy, and only for the sake of noise in itself! The hit single »Home Alone 4« is a piece of commercial POP.

It's kinda tragic. One of Denmark's only rockbands who has been able to sell records abroad, and now it's on its way down. Steeply.

Instead of having quit while there was still something to it, D:A:D seems to keep releasing albums - probably because making music is all the four Danish blokes are able to do.

Pity. Buy the two above-mentioned albums instead, if you want good rock.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Copeland soundtrack.......2000-02-06

I was happy to get this album by amazon, because here in europe it is hard to get. The newest soundtrack of Stewart Copeland is great. Most of the tunes are familiar and it`s typical Copeland. Some parts remind me of the playstation game soundtrack "Spyro the Dragon". It is a pitty that the cd has only 30 minutes music of Stewart on it. The song with Stan Ridgway is good. I`m thrilled that it is not a compilation album, but a score.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Oddball Brilliance.......2001-10-10

Although Marcos Valle had been gradually breaking away from the strictures of bossa nova over his previous two albums, this 1970 album presented something of a break with most of what he'd done up to that point. For starters, both the songs and his hair were getting longer, and the dynamic of this unique record resides in the yin-yang between electrified rock-influenced tracks featuring Milton Nascimento's backing band Som Imaginário, and orchestrally-backed examples of Valle's expertise in 6/8 waltz-time rhythms. This latter talent demonstrates that Valle could have easily been a Hollywood composer in the 40s had he been born three decades earlier. And all this is before you get to "Freio Aerodinamico" (pure Stereolab!), "Os Grilos" (a dancefloor hit several decades later) and "Suite Imaginária" (a page taken from David Axelrod's work with the Electric Prunes--think "Release Of An Oath"). Both brilliant and a bit bizarre, and a traditionally overlooked chapter in Brazilian pop history. In other words, a must-have!
