About the Artist
One of the West Coast's most exciting and dynamic new jazz ensembles, the Montclair Women's Big Band was formed in 1998 by award-winning trumpeter Ellen Seeling and veteran music producer Barbara Price. The group has headlined sold-out events for The Grammy Foundation, KCSM Radio, the San Jose Jazz Festival, The Human Rights Campaign, California State University and the Sonoma Jazz Society. Based at the Montclair Women's Cultural Arts Club in Oakland, California, the band prides itself in providing high visibility for its outstanding soloists, many of whom are also leaders, composers and recording artists. Showcasing their air-tight ensemble, high-energy rhythm section and big brassy sound, this powerful collection of performers consistently demolishes stereotypes of women jazz players.

The Montclair Women's Big Band is an irresistible swing machine which grabs your attention from the first downbeat. The commanding sound compels dancers to the floor and listeners to their feet. The groove is infectious, the visuals dramatic, the experience unforgettable. Prepare to be blown away by the Montclair Women's Big Band!

A consummate musician equally adept at jazz, R&B, Latin and pop/rock, Director Ellen Seeling has had a multi-faceted career as a trumpet player, composer, bandleader and educator. The first woman to earn a degree in Jazz Studies from Indiana University, the Milwaukee native moved to New York City in 1975. There she performed or recorded with Laura Nyro, Machito, Luther Vandross, Ray Barretto, Sister Sledge, Chic, Patti LaBelle, The Temptations, Latin Fever and Joe Cocker, among others.

Seeling was also actively cultivating her jazz chops, performing with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band, Slide Hampton's Manhattan Plaza Jazz Composer's Orchestra, Richard Davis, Mike Maineri and Phoebe Snow. In 1980, Seeling and saxophonist/composer Jean Fineberg formed the jazz fusion band DEUCE, recording their first self-titled album of original compositions in 1986 and their second, WindJammer, in 1996.

Seeling currently teaches at the Jazzschool in Berkeley, California, and served as jazz instructor for Indiana University, Pennsylvania State University, the International Women's Brass Conference, the Kansas City Women's Jazz Festival and the Young Musician's Program of the University of California, Berkeley.

Product Description
The Montclair Women's Big Band upholds a lofty tradition of women's big bands, from the Roaring 20s, through the swing era of the 30's and 40's. With Director Ellen Seeling at the helm, the band's groovin' rhythm section and outstanding soloists smoke their way through 14 classic arrangements. The band burns on Ernie Wilkins' rhythm tune, "The Brownsville Express," featuring Mad Duran on alto, Christy Dana on trumpet and Allison Miller on drums. The group breathes new life into "String of Pearls" with tenor saxophonist Jean Fineberg and trumpeter Marina Garza. And Vicki Randle's chops go way beyond her skill as the percussionist in The Tonight Show band. Just check out her vocal on "For Once in My Life." From Sonya Jason's alto and Tammy Hall's piano solos on Percy Mayfield's funky "Rivers Invitation" to Seeling's haunting interpretation of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Quiet Nights," this band can do it all.

The group's first CD roars through classic jazz and blues standards. Produced by Seeling and Price, with Assistant Director/tenor saxophonist Jean Fineberg and legendary sound engineer Leslie Ann Jones, the recording also highlights vocalists Vicki Randle (of the Tonight Show Band), Linda Tillery (of the Cultural Heritage Choir) and Bay Area singing star Pamela Rose.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent big band CD.......2006-02-22

This CD sports Bay Area heavyweights such as Annelise Zamula (of Bardo and After the End of the World Coretet) on saxophone. Vocals are handled by local legends such as Linda Tillery, Pamela Rose, and Vicky Randle. For those who want to support (and enjoy the creative product of) women in jazz, this is definitely a CD to own!
