Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Stefon Harris is the best thing that could have happened to Jacky Terrasson, whose recent albums have suffered from post-phenom inertia. With his fleet, brimming attack on vibraphone and scalloped phrasing on marimba, Harris forces Terrasson to pick up his game at the piano. Kindred is full of sharp contrapuntal exchanges, bop-fueled runs and, on dramatically reworked versions of "Summertime" and "Body and Soul," harmonic adventure. Accompanied by bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Terreon Gully, the coleaders play leapfrog on a taut, time-shifting reading of Randy Weston's "Little Niles"--a perfect tune for Harris's boyish urgency. Their dashing take on Bud Powell's "John's Abbey" is equally good. Among the slower stuff, a melodically glowing but restrained reading of "Never Let Me Go" is especially affecting. Terrasson, who impetuously rode the influence of Ahmad Jamal early on, has been slow in developing his own voice, but with energized sessions like this, there's a good chance his progress will accelerate. --Lloyd Sachs

Album Description

Although she was born and bred in Italy, Gambarini brings a distinctly American jazz flavor to Easy to Love. On the title track, her multi-octave range can be seen as an indication of the "cool school" but when she starts swinging she's anything but cool! Her scats and melodies breathe beautifully and her melodic lines have a lighter, airier quality that finds her swinging but in a softer, more relaxed manner. Billie Holiday's anthem "Lover Man" has been claimed as part of the cool jazz movement and Gambarini certainly offers an outstanding variation of this sublime ballad. Even Gershwin would have enjoyed her passionate reworking of "Porgy, I's Your Woman Now/I Loves You Porgy." Gambarini is equally successful at presenting this Great American Songbook standard as a medley of sentimentality with a range of penetrating cries and whispers implicated in her voice. From ballads to bop, Roberta proves she's no stranger to the art of swing or the bop idiom. Once into "On The Sunny Side of The Street" she teases with playful scats and daring vocalese that would renew anyone's vocal jazz ambitions. "Lover Come Back To Me" adopts a different tonal palette as she launches into a swinging set complete with searing scats that clearly show her respect for Ella Fitzgerald. Joined by the inimitable James Moody on tenor sax and vocals on "Lover Man" and "Centerpiece," the saxophonist adds his instinct for melodic development and own brand of scatting. Adding further to Gambarini's style is a mellifluous but dynamic ensemble that includes Chuck Berghofer and John Clayton on bass, Tamir Handelman and Gerald Clayton on piano, Willie Jones III and Joe La Barbera on drums.

5 out of 5 stars A talent in progress!.......2007-06-27

Roberta Gambarini, although her youth, demonstrates a profound sense of expression and sense of the meaning in every song she sings. She has generated around her a lot of succesful comments, but mostly what it really amazes me is her profound commitment and multidimensional range.

The arrangements are really superb and I don't hesitate for a second. She is one of the great jazz singers in this early Century.

5 out of 5 stars Hoo, boy, is this "easy to love"!.......2007-06-09

In a landmark CD, more than seventy-seven gorgeous minutes long, Roberta Gambarini makes a breath-taking debut that should propel her to the top of the jazz world at a very young age. With her warm, full, alto voice and a deliberately understated accompaniment, often just a bass and piano, Gambarini does it all, from a capella intros in songs like "Easy to Love" (one of the best on the CD), to blues (in "Multi-Colored Blue," another standout), and lots of scat in "Lover Come Back to Me," which also features a terrific drum solo by Joe La Barbera. In "Centerpiece" she even duets with growly-voiced James Moody, the tenor sax player here, whose bass voice sets off her clear alto as she soars into soprano range.

Through out this terrific CD, Gambarini shows total control, suggesting, on many occasions, the work, of a very young Sarah Vaughan. Her diction, in which you can hear her T's and R's very clearly, and her often interesting phrasing, which enable her to convey a thought beyond the usual line length, sometimes at considerable speed, keep the listener intrigued on a level beyond sound. This is not to underestimate her gorgeous sound, but to point out that her technique enhances it in ways many other singers can only dream of.

I have listened to this CD so often, with so much pleasure, finding new things to like on each hearing, that it is difficult to choose a favorite track, but certainly "On the Sunny Side of the Street," not normally a song I like, would have to rank right up there. Here she plays with high notes and then plunges almost to bass range, using a great deal of scat, accompanied by bass (Chuck Berghofer) and wailing sax (James Moody), until she is vamping at the end of the song. "Multi-Colored Blue" is another great one, her scat set off by the bass and piano (Tamir Hendelman).

Very much in the tradition of the great women of jazz of the '50s through the '70s, Gambarini adds a personal touch and a young energy to many standards, creating her own sound and, undoubtedly, a jazz reputation among young singers. Sometimes so inspired by the instrumental melodies that she creates her own lyrics to accompany them, Gambarini does it all here. I cannot recommend a CD by a young singer more highly! n Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars "Easy to Love" is a gem!.......2007-06-09

After so many repeated listenings in my car stereo, let me honestly state that Ms. Gambarini is among the best of the newer female jazz singers to arrive on the scene in perhaps the last 25 years. Her vocal style is purely her own, and should NOT be compared to the great singers that came before her.

This CD showcases Roberta and a fantastic array of musicians jamming it up - though every track is great, I have to cite two of my personal favorites - "Centerpiece" (with James Moody on sax and one heck of a scat duet with Roberta) and "Multi-Colored Blue," a Billy Strayhorn tune I've never heard of before.

Looking forward to the next album!!!

4 out of 5 stars I don't know what to say: would you help me?.......2007-05-24

Ms. Gambarini is a great singer but she is not an original stylist.

She is pianist Hank Jones' protegè and he says she is the best voice in more than 60 years. He said it in an European festival during one of their performances. And it is clearly recorded. It is quite risky of an affirmation, concerning to all the big songbird stars who have counted on Mr. Jones' efforts, from Anita O'Day and Nancy Wilson to Abbey Lincoln.

What upsets me is the undeniable similarity to Carmen McRae's way of doing the thing. It is more than impressive. Her phrase is McRae's. Her attack is McRae's. Her scat approach is McRae's.

Happens that I love McRae. Mcrae was a master.

Repertoire is a well choice, a collection of standards and jazz gems with many creative improvisation approaches. This includes a smart version of Cole Porter's 'Easy To Love'.

From 0 to 5, I chose 4 but I don't know whether under McRae's influence or not. Would you please help me?

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Kindred for Keeping Neo-Soul on the Map!.......2007-06-04

Deciding which albumn is better - their first or second - is no easy task. They're equally amazing. There's no doubt after listening to this duo on their sophmore cut that fate brought them together. Their songs are so positive and down-to-earth. The vocals are strong and harmonic. I have listened to this CD over and over many times in my car. I especially enjoyed track 6 and the title cut. Be sure to get their 1st albumn as well. Neo-soul and R&B fans love you Kindred!!!

5 out of 5 stars In This Life Together . . . . finally family music has exemplary appeal!.......2007-05-15

I must say, family music has never sounded better. Kindred the Family Soul has a full CD project hit! This CD will definitely have longevity and Kindred will definitely be remembered for years to come---just like Ashford and Simpson. With all of the "let's break-up" and get into self--"self absorbed" music on the market today, it is refreshing to hear "love of family" music that also speaks to the real-life family issues and struggles while possessing positive answers. This is a "let's be real with each other" project that speaks directly to the heart of family. All of the family issue bases are covered, with love, forgiveness and endurance being the answer. I would recommend this to all married couples, husbands and wives of all ages and durations of years. Let's get back to love, strength, forgiveness, compassion and endurance in family, and if you don't know how to express it in words to the one's you love, then purchase this CD and give it as a gift----enough said! Kindred the Family Soul should be right up there with Indie Arie and Amel Larrieux. These three artists have their own styles and direct messages that are definitely worth a listen. Keep Kindred the Family Soul's In This Life Together CD with your own personal family photo album, yes, it is just that good!

5 out of 5 stars I Love This Group.......2007-05-12

The CD really explores the in's and out's of married life as a young adult. I truly appreciate the honesty and love this couple expresses through the music.

5 out of 5 stars LIFE AFFIRMING. WONDERFUL. KINDRED is fantastic........2007-03-14

Add this project to your collection TODAY! I traditionally have a four track rule - if I like at least 4 tracks of a CD I purchase it. I LOVE (with a passion) 10 tracks on this CD. The ones I don't love I LIKE ALOT. It is music with a message - harmonies that move your body ...a project that affirms my soul. peace! - SHAASHAWN "the voyce" :)

5 out of 5 stars Kindred Soul is all that!!!.......2007-03-08

I also have their first CD. I enjoyed almost all of the songs on this album from the first time that I listened to it. It has a nice mellow sometimes up tempo flow and I really love the fact that this is ADULT music. No excessive cursing and misogyny.

5 out of 5 stars Kindred.......2007-03-28

Being from Philly, I was able to see them in concert at the Five Spot
(Black Lily) and was blown away by the two of them. Their music is welcoming, it's peaceful and soulful. I asked her to perform "Stars" for me and my husband. It was unbelievable. Every Tuesday their band would head to the stage and the rest is as they say history.
Thanks Kindred

4 out of 5 stars GROWN FOLK MUSIC.......2007-03-13

This husband and wife team is just awesome. The band and background singers are superb as well. One of my favorite cuts is "Stars", which is lush, sexy and just plain old beautiful. I would want my husband to feel that way about me!!! Ursual Rucker the diva griot does her thing and does it well on the cut "We", exhorting togetherness which is like the song says a beautiful thing. I even like the intro with Ryva and her british lilt! My favorite song is "I AM" which is so girl power and motivating. Go get this album because it is worth while.

5 out of 5 stars Bought It Twice.......2006-12-27

I bought this CD for my husband the week it came out, about 3 years ago. I claimed it as my own, soon after. He reclaimed it and took it to the barber shop where he worked and someone walked out with it. I was crushed! So I bought it again this year, along with the new CD. You can't get good music like this. Uncommercialized and great for all moods.

My husband and I go see them in concert, everytime they come to Detroit. They are a dynamic duo. I hope they don't fall prey to the industry, as their look is evolving into what records exec would have you look like, rather than the natural look, I'm come to expect. Nevertheless.......I am a fan and will continue to be. I highly recommend this CD and the new one. Look out for those hidden tracks.....gems to say the least.

As the Man in Black celebrates his 70th birthday, he looks back on a career not only of legendary performances, but of remarkable songs that capture a bygone America, in vignettes of trains, rivers, rebels, street-corner shoeshine boys, and displaced lovers, moving on, never to return. To honor that contribution, now part of America's musical heritage, more than a dozen luminaries of country, rock, and folk--including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Sheryl Crow--gather to interpret Cash's word portraits of the downtrodden and disenfranchised. Nearly every performance is a keeper, though some deliver a special thrill: Dylan introducing his rendition of "Train of Love" as a song he used to sing before he ever wrote songs himself; Little Richard turning "Get Rhythm" into even more of a rockabilly raver; and Cash's daughter, Rosanne, giving "I Still Miss Someone" a clean, sweet reading that underscores its poignant message. Yet it's Springsteen, in a cover of "Give My Love to Rose," who comes to own the project, laying bare the pain, hope, spirituality, love, and despair that Cash wove into the framework of almost all of his songs. An extraordinary set from, yes, kindred spirits all. --Alanna Nash

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Tribute Album.......2006-08-01

I heard Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow and Mary Chapin Carpenter perform "Flesh and Blood" during a televised tribute to Johnny Cash. I became "obsessed" with finding this song. Unable to download the song any of the music services, I purchased the entire CD from Amazon. This is arguably one of the BEST tribute CDs I have ever heard. While maintaining the flavor of Johnny's music, each artist takes the song and makes it their own. This is not "Johnny Cash Karaoke." It is some of the best artists in country, pop, folk and blues honoring The Man In Black. Among my favorites (though I like all the songs) are Travis Tritts slow and emotional rendition of "I Walk the Line" and Dwight Yoakum's hillbilly rock on "Understand Your Man." I've never been a fan of Hank Williams, Jr. but LOVE his version of "Big River." I am thankful I wasn't able to just download "Flesh and Blood" or I would have missed what has become one of my absolute favorite CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Little Richard Rocks!!!.......2006-07-07

This is a great album - a wonderful selection of Cash treasures and treasured artists, masterfully produced by Marty Stuart. He said he had to fight to get rock pioneer Little Richard into the studio. Well the fight was well worth it. Although Little Richard makes 'Get Rhythm' a rock 'n' roll track, it is a wonderful tribute to Cash as a songwriter. And if you like rock 'n' roll, this is the only track you'll be feeling. If you don't like to rock, then you may want to skip this track. But check it out, Little Richard hasn't missed a beat in over 50 years of recording!

5 out of 5 stars What an Amazing Tribute to an Amazing Man.......2005-12-30

I saw the CMT Special on TV that was made when this album was being recorded and it was almost as good as the album. They interviewed the artists and Johnny & June Cash. Plus you see the artists sing their version of these songs live. Johnny Cash sure seemed to like them all. He said Keb' Mo's version of "Folsum Prison Blues" was great and he thought Travis Tritt's rendition of "I Walk The Line" was the best he ever heard. Seems to me he ought to know if anyone does and I must say I agree with Johnny. I love this album and every song on it. I also have them all sung by Johnny Cash, also GREAT. As to the whiners that complain about the different interpertations of these songs. Who would want to hear a Johnny Cash song sung by someone else if they were just trying to sound like Johnny Cash?(As if anyone could) Now that would suck! If you want to hear Johnny Cash singing Johhny Cash then buy a Johnny Cash album there are plenty out there and all of them are GREAT. Anyone who does not like the tracks on here dosen't know Jack about good music. This is a TRIBUTE to Johhny Cash by some of the best artists in country music singing the songs their way, making them their own and doing a great job of it. Oh by the way "Meet me in Heaven" is sung by Janette Carter, a member of the Carter Family who won many awards including a Grammy, not June Carter Cash Johnny's wife, with Johnny joining in. Janette's voice like Johnny's matured with the years. Take it for what it is a loving tribute to a Great Man. This album would be a bargin at twice the price.

4 out of 5 stars This makes me feel good!.......2005-12-04

This is a great CD. I just found it by chance. Looking for Bruce Springsteen singles online, I found he participated in this CD. I have everything by Bruce, and I like Johnny Cash, so I bought it. I have to say that the first time I listened to it I already liked it. There is not one single song I do not like. The contributions by Bob Dylan (introducing the song saying "hi" to Johnny and thank him for being there for him when he needed him), Little Richard, Bruce Springsteen (also thanking Johnny), Charlie Robinson, Emmylou Harris with Sheryl Crow, Steve Earle, Marty Stuart (who produces the record), and Janette Carter with June Carter and Johnny Cash himself are all of them among my favorites. Being a so diverse collection of artists, one may like these or those better, but not buying this CD just because somebody wrote that "Keb' Mo' sucks", should not be an argument. Some may like Keb' Mo', some may not. What a big deal, anyway! I agree 100% with some reviews here, about the purpose of a tribute. You do not have to cover the song exactly as it was released by the artist, but trying to sing it in your own way, and this is mostly what this CD is all about (including Keb' Mo', of course). I am not giving it 5 stars, since it is not an essential CD (let's put it that way), but it really is a fantastic CD worth buying it. Now that there is the movie "Walk the Line" out there maybe a lot of people would like to give this CD a try. The booklet design is very good too, although lyrics are not included, but you can always find them online. Johnny Cash writes in the booklet his own review: "An interesting collection of some of the best people in our business paying tribute to me. Boy, does this make me feel good!"

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful tribute to Johnny Cash!.......2005-02-05

With the names on this CD performing Johnny Cash music, I was sure it would be entertaining. This is excellent! From Bruce Springsteen's soft ballad "Give My Love to Rose" to the rousing style of Little Richard with "Get Rhythm".

The entire collection is just that....a tribute! Some people object to others covering Johnny's songs, but that's what a tribute is all about....covering the song... You may like it and you may not, regardless the tribute is refreshing. Yes, and I can still go back and listen to Johnny if I want to.

There has been discussion of Keb Mo changing the lyrics to "Folsom Prison Blues"...as he sings in a bluesy tune.. "they say I shot a man in Reno.. but that was just a lie." According to a quote from "The Tennessean" newspaper, after the line was changed and sung, Marty Stuart replied. "Let me tell you about that line you just changed. That's one of the most sacred lines in country music." Suprisingly, Stuart allowed the change.

One style I didn't care for is Travis Tritt's "I Walk the Line". True, he does it great! But since that has been my all time favorite country song since whenever, I just can't appreciate the soothing ballad he turned it into. Just my opinion.

All in all, this is an excellent tribute with fine performers. And, to cap off the entire CD, how great the 20 or 30 second instrumental of that famous guitar sound to "I Walk The Line." .....MzRizz

Album Description

Combines the talents of two well-known jazz stars -Bill Watrous and Pete Christlieb - backed by a jazz orchestra led by arranger Gary Urwin, who wrote the fresh, arrangements on this project specifically for them.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Keeping up his high standards.......2007-01-08

Trombonist Bill Watrous has distinguished himself as one of the top players in jazz since his emergence as a solo artist in the early 1970s. He seems equally comfortable in any size ensemble, from quartet to big band to full orchestra. This recent session, released in 2005, was with Gary Urwin's big band, and Watrous shares the spotlight with tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb, another outstanding player. The CD is satisfying on all levels: solos, ensemble work, quality of arrangements, and choice of material. An excellent choice for anyone who enjoys contemporary big band jazz. A one-time gathering of artists like this makes one hope that, at least in the jazz idiom, the album format will not be replaced any time soon by exclusive use of one-track-at-a-time music purchases.

5 out of 5 stars All Around Wonderful.......2006-10-11

Just a wonderful CD that shows how delightful a big band can be.

I love the choice of songs, Danny Boy, Girl Talk, My Foolish Heart. And I will listen to (and usually love) anything with Bill Watrous. It may be a chiche to say someone sings on his instrument, but Watrous does.

Liner notes ignored a wonderful point on the last track, "I'll Be Seeing You". Pete Christlieb, as noted, was in Doc Severinsen's Tonight Show band for many years.

It was common knowledge that Johnny Carson's two favorite songs were "Here's That Rainy Day" and "I'll Be Seeing You". If this was a tribute to Pete's old boss, they did a great job on it.

4 out of 5 stars Un enregistrement réjouissant.......2006-07-10

4 out of 5 stars No More Blues - 4.5 stars .......2006-04-24

That tune is not the title of the CD, but certainly could have been. For if you happen to be feeling the blues a bit these days, one listen to this fine big band recording will help to blow your blues away with power. The talented arranger Gary Urwin has an uncanny ability, like Bill Holman, to write arrangements that swing quite naturally and uplift the listener's spirits. Urwin's arrangements never lose sight of the tune's basic structure and never go too far out. Yet they also manage to avoid the obvious, and while instruments such as harp and English horn might be the kiss-of-death for many jazz arrangements, they are welcome additions on several tracks and never detract from the straight-ahead jazz feeling of the CD.

For "Kindred Spirits" Urwin had the idea to write arrangements for an all-star L.A. big band and to feature two soloists added especially for this occasion - superstar trombonist Bill Watrous and the powerful and distinctive tenor player Peter Christlieb. Watrous and Christlieb weave in and out of every arrangement making impressive and often moving solo statements and showing why they are among the finest soloists in jazz today. Watrous is featured on "Chinatown" and leads the `bones and solos on "Danny Boy". Christlieb's solo features are "Foolish Heart" and "My Ship." Other soloists in this excellent band include trumpeters Bobby Shew and Wayne Bergeron, and pianist Christian Jacob.

Every track here has much to recommend it, but some of the highlights include the swinging "Lester Leaps In"; the hard-driving "Beautiful Love"; a surprisingly up-tempo "Girl Talk"; an inventive arrangement of Miles' Davis' "E.S.P" with many intriguing voicings; the multi-tempoed "My Foolish Heart"; and the bluesy title piece.

The CD is marred only slightly by a somewhat unnatural, studio-bound recording quality. But otherwise "Kindred Spirits" is a swinging and very enjoyable big-band CD, and warmly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for Anne fans!!.......2007-04-14

I bought this CD to listen to at work because I NEED music when I'm working and this CD gets me focused and puts me in a great mood.

Some of the tracks are pretty short, but all are sweet.

If you love the music score in the Anne of Green Gables movies, you will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-01-10

While I'm at work and listening, I'm transported to my cozy livingroom watching Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea. I can connect the song with every scene in the movie! It's fabulous!

Folk

Literary inspiration and collaboration distinguish this ambitious project by veteran folksinger John McCutcheon. The album-opening "Our Flag Was Still There" celebrates a progressive brand of patriotism, taking its title from an essay by Barbara Kingsolver, whom McCutcheon invited to contribute lyrics. Among his other collaborators are poet Rita Dove (who even contributes a bit of spoken word to "Claudette Colvin Goes to Work") and novelist Lee Smith (who inspired "Good Ol' Girls" and, with McCutcheon, wrote "Single Girl"). His reading of Sister Helen Prejean's Dead Man Walking inspired a musical interpretation that's like a chain-gang holler, while a couple of musical settings for Woody Guthrie lyrics range from the romantically tender ("Harness Up the Day") to the playful ("Old Cap Moore"). Of the two inspired by Wendell Berry, "It's the Economy, Stupid" finds common spirit between beatnik jazz and modern rap, and "Jaber Crow's Silly Song About Jesus" has piano accompaniment that is as churchy as the lyric is subversive. The Spanish-language adaptations from Carmen Agra Deedy ("La Mujer de Don Miguel"), José Martí ("Cultivo una Rosa Blanca," much in the spirit of his "Guantanamera"), and McCutcheon's beloved Pablo Neruda ("Para Mi Corazon Baste Tu Pecho") provide some of the album's loveliest moments. --Don McLeese

Album Description

With his twenty-ninth album, multiple Grammy nominee John McCutcheon continues to forge new ground. Long considered one of folk music's most literate songwriters, John gathers co-writers from among literature's most celebrated contemporary authors: Barbara Kingsolver, Lee Smith, Wendell Berry, former US Poet Laureate Rita Dove, children's author Carmen Agra Deedy, and Dead Man Walking's Sr. Helen Prejean. Drawing from history as well, this recording also features two newly discovered and completed Woody Guthrie songs and musical arrangements of poems by Nobel Laureate Pablo Neruda and Cuba's national poet, Jose Marti. The intimate settings of these fourteen songs, the depth of the material and the breadth of subject matter are further proof of the mastery of this ever-inventive and always satisfying artist.

4 out of 5 stars ...and 1/2 .... Powerful, reflective, inspirational and sometimes esoteric messages.......2006-04-20

Playing Time - 56:20 -- On "Mightier Than The Sword," McCutheon's focus is powerful, and sometimes esoteric, messages. For inspiration, he collaborates with Barbara Kingsolver, Lee Smith, Wendell Berry, Carmen Agra Deedy, and Rita Dove, as well as posthumously with Woody Guthrie. Multiple Grammy nominee McCutcheon's 29th album is a voracious reader who spent many hours at his local public library. He considered books as his "refuge and launching pad," and he had found "a horizon of unending pleasure and passion." It was inevitable that the imagery and themes he encountered in books would eventually show up in his songs. "Dead Man Walking," for example, was written in 1994 immediately after being inspired by Sr. Helen Prejean's book of the same name. McCutheon composed the melody and a chorus for Guthrie's "Old Cap Moore, " a vignette originally written in 1949 when Guthrie and family were living on Coney Island. Guthrie's lyrics for "Harness Up The Day" were found in the Guthrie Archives in 2005.

Songs are also literary works, and the challenge was to put to music the words or inspirations of celebrated authors, a former U.S. Poet Laureate (Rita Dove), children's author (Carmen Agra Deedy), folk singer (Woody Guthrie), Nobel Laureate (Pablo Neruda), and Cuba's national poet (Jose Marti). The 14 songs are mostly given intimate settings, and their messages call for contemplation and deliberation. Such reflective material is often slower-tempo'ed, and it might have enhanced this project to pen a few more up-tempo pieces for additional contrast. Lyrics (including English translation for "Para Mi Corazon Basta Tu Pecho") are included in the CD's jacket. The words for "It's the Economy, Stupid," cover 4 pages in the booklet, and the song is an interesting, almost free-form kind of profound statement. The album's closer holds one of his wisest statements as McCutheon sings an ode to common things ... simple, small and good. As he states, "I might forget them if I would not pause each day and thus attest, I am a man uncommonly blest." Books and music could also be viewed as common things, but they hold great joy for those who explore them, capture their soul, and document their more uncommon intellectual depth of feelings or meanings. Album Description

Back in October 2001, Jack DeJohnette had a day off during a tour with Keith Jarrett. So he seized the opportunity for a duo concert with guitar visionary Bill Frisell, at the Earshot Festival in Seattle. Some time passed before the two greats listened back to the tapes. Satisfied, they resolved to prepare the material for release. "The Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers" stands as a milestone work for both artists who are known for their freedom in creativity. It echoes their most famous projects while pointing the music in a forward direction.

2 out of 5 stars Playing Outside the Comfort Zone.......2006-12-06

This album shows how much Bill Frisell and Jack DeJohnette have achieved - but on other albums. This CD shows why their other albums are so good. This CD is not very good.

Bill Frisell is composer without peer, pushing the boundaries of jazz during the last 20 years more than anyone I can think of - his collaborations with John Zorn, Paul Motian, George Lewis and others are at the very highest level of recent achievements in jazz. He's also a great guitarist who has redefined what we listen for on that instrument.

Jack DeJohnette has been lurking on the fringes of innovation in jazz even longer. Miles Davis, Lester Bowie, David Murray, Howard Johnson and Mick Goodrick are just a few of the musical luminaries he's accompanied during the last 40 years. He's provided incredibly sophisticated and restrained contexts for John Abercrombie and Dave Holland's musical explorations, and propulsive backdrops for a good number of high energy performers (the best of example I can think of was at Chicago's Jazz Showcase around 1982 - I guess you had to be there).

On "The Elephant Sleeps...", Frisell and DeJohnette abandon their strengths. On Frisell's best albums ("News For Lulu" and "More News For Lulu" with John Zorn and George Lewis, "East/West", any of the "On Broadway" series with Paul Motian and Joe Lovano) Frisell concentrates on sparseness and tone - his solos are almost reticent, his accompaniments are so understated as to overwhelm. Here, Frisell works too hard to fill sonic space - he doesn't let silence happen, instead stretching to create regular, percussive meters when sitting out, even for a few beats, would have been a better choice.

DeJohnette's best drumming is non-traditional, when he implies the beat and plays melodically. He's played on and released some great CD's (my favorites are "New Directions In Europe" and the three "Gateway" CD's), but he's never been as consistently, rampantly creative as Max Roach, Ronald Shannon Jackson or Louis Moholo, to name a few. On "The Elephant Sleeps..." he plays to his weaknesses - he often falls into straight four pop drumming, and his keyboard playing on "Storm Clouds and Mist" is a new low in a pretty deep rut he's dug over the years on that instrument.

Maybe the low point on this CD for me is "Ode To South Africa" - after listening to Frisell and DeJohnette play the tune for a while, I started to wonder when the lead instrument would come in - they'd created a perfect backdrop for something to happen, but nothing did.

These guys have made a lot of good music during their careers. Here, Frisell the composer doesn't compose, Frisell the guitar genius relies on banalities, and DeJohnette the innovative percussionist plays straight four time too often.

Buy something else that showcases their strengths.

3 out of 5 stars I agree with previous poster.......2006-09-20

Yes, i am also a big fan of these guys. But you can't help feeling that this is a 'let's record something fast cause we have other things to do' kind-a record. Of course, with players of this experience and caliber something is bound to stick. Listen before buying!

3 out of 5 stars Some good songs.......2006-07-27

Let me start by saying I'm a HUGE Frisell and DeJohnette fan. The duo thing is nice - but really it's just improvising with little or no discussion in advance. Vamp/Modal stuff - if that, sometimes.

I'd rather hear these guys tackle some new music but there are some strong 'songs' on this recording. Most are kind of weak though. Beware.

5 out of 5 stars Only the best!.......2006-05-08

I love Bill Frisell and Jack Dejohnette and I must say I was not disappointed at all. This is an excellent live duo recording of these two modern jazz giants. The ambience is atmospheric and really is on par with DeJohnette's greatest ECM work, and Bill Frisell's guitar has not sounded as good on any of his recent solo outings that have tended to be somewhat too tame in my opinion. Here at some points Bill Frisell really plays loud again. A big surprise since I had not heard of it until I found it today at Archambaud.

5 out of 5 stars Flipping Glorious.......2006-03-05

Everything you might expect with these two in a room together with no distractions. Made my day. Get the Motian - Garden of Eden that they're offering too. Two of the best cd's I've heard in a long long time.

    Album Description

Robin Eubanks has been using electronics to augment the sonic palette of his trombone for more than 15 years. EB3 was created for the express purpose of exploring modern technologies within his music, and advancing the art of Trombone in general. All three members of the EB3 collective share a love jazz, funk, and rock, not to mention a musical fluency in odd meters.

Robin's new project- a DVD-CD combo pack-- LIVE VOL. 1-- features his signature original compositions. Eubanks uses various effects and processors to alter the trombone sound, including effects that emulate electric guitar. He also uses percussion pads with programmed sounds. He creates loops on-the-spot arrangements using loops thereby accompanying himself on trombone.

The DVD highlights the band's multi-dimensional sound, and illustrates each musician's dexterity in handling more than one musical role - this is a truly amazing sight! (Especially seeing the drummer play with one hand on the kit and one hand on the keyboard - for the whole show!)
