Product Description
Clark Terry is one of the most important and beloved figures in jazz. His roots go back to the bands of Charlie Barnet, Charlie Ventura, Eddie Vinson, and Count Basie, but his career took off when he became a featured soloist in Duke Ellington's band. He was the first Afro-American to join the Tonight Show band, and it was during this stint that he released the first version of "Mumbles". On this album, he reinterprets ten of the world's most famous jazz standards in a more modern jazz groove, and then turns them over to some of today's finest re-mixers in order to bring the songs into the new millennium. The album symbolizes the time crossing of jazz from the 20th to the 21st century, and once again, Clark is on the cutting edge.

2 out of 5 stars Hed Kandi - Mark Doyle = Forgettable..........2007-05-19

I absolutely loved the first three installments of this series, but since it's "rebirth" last year, I've been completely disappointed with the selections. Apart from a few good tracks (Koop, Aim, Kenneth Bager), this compilation is pretty lackluster. I've been waiting for another Winter Chill album since 2005, but with the direction Serve Chilled has taken since Mark's departure, I can only imagine that it would also be a disappointment.

You're having a dinner party. The in-laws are going to be there. So are some of your closest "after-hours" friends. You need music, something mellow but not despicably insipid. Welcome to a double-disc set that will cover all the above bases. Featuring Dido's "Home with Me (Chillin' with the Family Mix)," St Germain's wonderful, downtempo "Sure Thing," and Royksopp's jaunty "Eple," it's mainstream enough for the progressive suburbanites in your midst. Meanwhile, Badly Drawn Boy's "The Shining" and "Nights Interlude" from Nightmares on Wax are culled from a deeper well of modern folk and jazz, respectively. The second disc, which contains some absolute gems, works overall as a more fluid mix. After Jakatta and Moby bring us further in, Dusted hit the dubbed-out trip-hop trail with "Childhood." Witchman (a.k.a. John Roome) has the set's best moment with "Leave No Trace (Dub)," a smoky bit of wicked seduction that makes for a marvelous chill-out gem. --Steffan Chirazi

5 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent !.......2004-10-17

When I bought this disc I thought It'll be a little boring to listening... the reality is that I love this music a lot because is very relaxing and easy listening.
Don't be affraid and get yours !!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best CDS Yet.......2004-06-28

When I first heard the cd, I was like man, this would be awesome to chill too, not knowing it was called Ultra Chill. When i found out i knew i had to have it so i bought volume 1 and 2. I loved Volume 1 with Nigntmares on Wax, Gorillaz, Dido, and many more. But when i put in Volume 2 i have to admit i was a little disappointed. But all in all i love both cds and if had a second chance would DEFINATELY buy agian.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not consistently good.......2004-01-05

I disagree with some other reviewers. I love Disc 2. It has a hip, mellow but uplifting mood, and flows nicely. Disc 1 is more hit and miss. I'm a bit sick of the Dido track; it's been around a while and used a lot it seems, or maybe it's just that it was the theme song for a TV show that has killed it for me. I've listened to Disc 2 far more than Disc 1. But I'd hesitate about spending full price on this double disc album when only one of the two discs is a keeper.

2 out of 5 stars Ultra bore.......2003-11-04

I really like chill music when I am working and relaxing but this had to be the biggest disappointment of all the chill CD's that I have purchased from Dido's poorly constructed vocal to whereever some of the other tracks got their inspiration it sounds like a compilation of leftovers.

3 out of 5 stars Chill Out.......2003-10-30

This cd is great for relaxing. Put it on, dim the lights, and relax.

4 out of 5 stars Serve Chilled Returns.......2007-06-14

I was a pretty vocal advocate of Hed Kandi's "Serve Chilled" series. I tried out a few of their other compilations too, Winter Chill and Beach House specifically. But neither really grabbed me the way the Serve Chilled series did. Maybe it was because of the time I got the first one... towards the end of 2000, I saw it in the Virgin store in Vegas while there for business and picked it up having recognized S-Tone Inc. and some others. I loved volume one and quickly became a fan of volume two before volume three ranked amongs my favorite compilations. So hearing that "Serve Chilled" was returning, I was very happy about the decision.

After all of that, when I checked this one out, I wasn't really disappointed but it didn't pick-up where vol 3 left off some 5 years ago. It starts out nice enough with a great 4Hero track (those guys are quality!) and the Lars Bartkuhn track is a nice surprise too. It wasn't my favorite track of his (Treasure Everywhere is) but I like Lars' music and his approach. But then there's pretty cool soulful track by Secret Stealth that has a neat beat and feel to it. Very promising start! But that's really it for disc one IMO, outside of the interesting "Crazy Girls" which gets you more for it's originality.

Disc two comes on and I'm taken back to the fantastic disc twos of the franchise. This one starts out well with Henry Mancini's "Lujon", a song that was done over by a few "chillout" groups in the early 2000's. I want to say it was "Ocean Beach Cybophonia" by Black Mighty Orchestra. Another stand-out was Crazy Penis' (horrid name, I know) "Sweet Feeling". The name and the song together... pretty poor. But it is a nice song. Sandboy's "Viver", given a remake by Butti 49 is very nice and laid back - a real throwback to the great times in the series. Sung in portuguese but with a real modern vibe to it and splashes of orchestration. It's been on a few other comps too. Finally, Defender's cut was alright... a bit redundant after the first minute and it ultimately goes nowhere. But it has a unique sort of mid-80's feel to it.

So this was a decent return for the HK Serve Chilled Series. But like all the other releases of theirs that I own, it's got loads and loads of filler that drag it down. In fact it follows the blue-print of its predecessors perfectly... mediocre disk one with a few stand-outs and superior disc two that still has a few crummy & boring songs. But HedKandi's approach was always top rate - they didn't follow the run of the mill series' bent on making a quick buck (even though they still want to) like M.O.S. or Ultra. The songs are always the full edit and there's no cross-fading here - just full tracks which always gives the series a full star in my book. 3.5 stars - a good summer album, but be very wary of the filler & it's not as strong, in the end, as Volumes 1 and 3 which are sadly out of print.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-04-13

I really like this CD. It's great background music for a cocktail party or just studying and relaxing. I've had comments from party guests about the music I was playing. They liked it too. It isn't good for driving music because it will put you to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic chill/ambient/background music.......2007-04-05

I know this is an expensive import, but it has 2 CDs full of great music.

5 out of 5 stars JfromNY.......2006-08-31

If you're looking for a great chill, poolside, or even a great evening late-night low -key album this is it. I have 7 Hed Kandi CD's and this is my favorite, along with, but a totaly contrast to, the twisted disco set. I can't recommend this album enough.

5 out of 5 stars Glad it's back.......2006-08-07

I bought the new Serve Chilled album. Like the other reviewer below, it was nice to have something different after Hed Kandi's last few dance albums, which have been a little disapointing. I like that Hed Kandi is now bringing back older compilation series that I thought were long gone. Now if only they could bring back Deeper, I would be very happy! Serve Chilled is a nice collection of chillout tunes that are more upbeat than the dark and acoustic tracks from their Winter Chill compilations (which I also love). Nice summer listening!

Great product, mint condition, super fast shipping! Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent samples of Chicane sensibilities.......2006-06-18

This is a must-have CD for Chicane fans for two solid reasons:

1. It has 3 remixes of Chicane's music by Chicane himself and 1 by his engineer/producer buddy who understands what Chicane's music is all about.

2. Most of these remixes otherwise exist on seperate singles and are usually the only good ones on the bunch. So this CD is more listening bang for your buck.

Now for my review:

The first track is the original Offshore album version from "Far from the Maddening Crowds", the crown jewel of that album. Without a doubt considered the best Ibizan trance song ever by most critics/fans of the genre. Enough said.

The second track, believe it or not, is just a renamed version of the Disco Citizen's mix of Sunstroke on "FFTMC" which is track 6 on that album. This is also an excellent song and in my opinion superior to the "original version" which appears on track 9 of that same album. Very upbeat and perfect for freeway driving. Disco Citizens is simply the name of Chicane's alter-ego.

The third track is found on the "Lost You Somewhere" singles pushed out in 1997 and is by far the weakest remix on this collection. The original version on the full album of "FFTMC" is far superior. I agree with the previous reviewer; this mix is derivative and prolonged.

The fourth track is a Disco Citizens remix of "Strong in Love" which appeared as track 3 on the EP of the same name. This is an excellent remix which Chicane left largely untouched from his original version, which is superior but unfortunately not on this album. Still, this track is worthy of this collection and an excellent listen. If you find you like it, I strongly recommend the "Strong in Love" EP which has both versions and a Radio Edit. This song is widely regarded as Chicane's best work between his "Far from the Maddening Crowds" and "Behind the Sun" full-length albums.

The fifth track is, well, a remix of a remix. On "FFTMC" Chicane's original album version of this track is an ambient dreamy affair with lilting voices and tones. The album remix was a flourishing bass and synth-driven affair which I've already stated is fantastic. Well, this remix takes that mix and adds even more adrenaline into the mix with more synths while subduing the moving bassline a bit. Excellent for exercising to.

Finally, the last track is the most original remix of Chicane's seminal "Offshore 97" single. You can't improve on perfection, especially when it comes to the song that put Chicane on the map and, again, is considered THE standard-bearer of Balearic/Ibizan trance. So what does this remix do? It's what earned the title of this compilation. It re-interprets the already "chilled out" sounds of the song into another era, using 1970's electric piano and a fantastic electric guitar bassline that glides through the song. Chicane's melodies and signature remain, but are complimented by another kind of chill which blends smoothly and surprisingly well. This is about as organic as you can remix a Chicane track. This isn't a remix. It's a perfect re-imagining of a perfect song.

With all of Chicane's EP's and singles becoming rarities you do not want to pass this compilation up.

5 out of 5 stars Never Gets Old..........2006-01-28

This is such a breathtaking EP. According to iTunes, I've played each song at least 60+ times and this is after I formatted a few months ago. Even after listening to it so many times, it just doesn't seem to get old which says a lot about the quality and effort that has been put into perfecting each track. Lost You Somewhere (Heliotropic Mix) is the only track that brings the EP down just a little bit, I prefer the original to it any day. That's not to say it's an awful track, oh no! It's good... it's just the original version is far superior. After that track, comes Strong In Love (Disco Citizens Remix) which is by far my favorite track out of the 6 songs. I don't mean to lead a future buyer to get disappointed by over-hyping the song, but that track is just amazing. Everything falls in place flawlessly. Top producer DJ Quicksilver also makes an appearance on track 5 and does an extraordinary job with it.

1. Offshore (Original Ambient Version) - 9/10
2. Sunstroke (Disco Citizens On The Train Remix) - 10/10
3. Lost You Somewhere (Heliotropic Mix) - 7/10
4. Strong In Love Featuring Mason (Disco Citizens Remix) - 11/10
5. Sunstroke (DJ Quicksilver Remix) - 10/10
6. Offshore 97(A Man Called Adam Remix) - 9/10

A copy of this EP is quite hard to find in good condition nowadays so if you find a fresh copy somewhere, definitely purchase it. If you are a fan of Chicane, trance, or good music in general then you would really want this in your collection. 5 stars fo' sure!

5 out of 5 stars For the mind,body,and soul............2002-03-19

This 6 track CD is a pure gem, reflecting such boundaries of musical soundscapes. Chicane is truly amazing in the way, he creates and hence entwines progressive trance, dream house, ambient, and breaks with his unique style. All of the tracks were great. However, I though that the Disco Citizens Remix of "Strong In Love", would have been better, with the vocals......The original full length version, which contains the vocals is on the CD single, which I luckily did find, inspite of being out of print....But overall, the cd is worth buying. Also very impressive is the "A Man Called Adam" remix of the song "Offshore 97", which is very relaxing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2000-09-09

It's time to congratulate Chicane (Nick Bracegirdle) on his first widely published remix compilation.

Chicane avoids falling victim to the temptation to accept bland remixes that seems to plague a lot of artists. It seems that oftentimes musicians, while remixing songs of others or of their own, end up corrupting the soul of the music that they're working with, and instead end up with a mess thats neither reminiscent of the original, nor suitably original to be dubbed its own title.

Songs like the Power Circle 'A Man Called Adam' remix of "Offshore 97" bring out the best in Chicane's peers' abilities to recognize the core features of his music and bring it into a new height. While the original "Offshore" was an active, uplifting, and energetic song, the remix brings to it the salty freshness of oceanside relaxation, making for a sooothing result that you can dance to or relax to with equal ease. This is not to discount the original work, however. Chicane's original productions are masterpieces in themselves, but these remixes manage to climb to similar heights by presenting the songs in a different light, while still maintaining their original construction. I suppose it's similar to how I view the four seasons, winter, fall, summer, spring. They're all different, with their own unique characteristics, but I love them each for their own reasons. Similarly, these remixes manage to fade themselves into a different "season" and express a different tone while maintaining the heart of the originals that they are derived from.

This album from Bracegirdle is a masterpiece. Every song deserves its own recognition, and I listen to each with equal interest. It's been months since I first got a hold of these songs, and I still can't stop listening to them. Call me boring or bland, but they're too good to put down. I love it.

This second installment of what looks to be an ongoing series carries the usual selection of mellow mainstream on the first disc and a typically intriguing collection of lesser-known compositions on the second. The acoustic guitar alongside Nelly Furtado's voice on "Party (Reprise Mix)" is a wonderfully melancholic surprise on the first disc, while Goldfrapp deliver the smoky, Air-esque "Lovely Head." Purists will again find the second disc worth its weight, as Tosca's "Honey (Supatone 1 Dub)," the again excellent Witchman, with "Mekong," and Timo Maas's "Hash Driven" give the disc a nice, dub-driven spine. Extra credit is awarded for not only reviving the Specials' brilliant "Ghost Town," but for making it work as part of a chill-style compilation. If Chilled 01 was your cup of chai, then 02 will further serve both your needs and chillin' education. --Steffan Chirazi

1 out of 5 stars Commercialized 'Chill'.......2005-02-08

Most savvy listeners of the 'Chill' genre will realize the term itself is extremely broad, and can include anything from Zero 7 and Moby to The Dining Rooms and Thievery Corporation, plus a few other things in between. But Coldplay?

Don't get me wrong - I love Coldplay, and I daresay 'don't panic' is one of my favorite songs. But in my collection I most certainly do NOT have my Coldplay albums filed under 'Chill;' I have them filed under 'Rock' where they belong. Plus, adding insult to injury, there is absolutely no mixing -- a hallmark of an excellent 'Chill' compilation album is the subtle ebb and flow through mixing from track to track, as well as the inclusion of a few remixes to spice up your well-worn favorite tunes (for example, a remix of 'don't panic,' although I shudder to imagine such a thing, would have been an appropriate attempt instead of just slapping the LP version on there).

This compilation is really nothing more than a smattering of popular tunes and a few 'Chill' overplayed (but still good) standards (i.e. 'Lebanese Blonde,' by Thievery Corporation). You could get a similar effect by putting your CD or MP3 collection on random, wildly transitioning from rock to jazz to funk and back again. I liken this type of commercialized mass production and sensationalism to the ever popular (but sadly tasteless) 'Pure Moods' CDs - it's simply an attempt to grab the cash of inexperienced listeners new to a specific musical genre.

Spend your $$ on something more worthwhile, like the fantastic 'Hed Kandi' compilations instead, such as the 'Serve Chilled' series or the 'Winter Chill' series. The import price might be steep for you, but you'll definitely be glad of the investment after listening.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent !.......2004-10-17

A pair of disc that you don't get off your cd player or cd wallet because they're really good music !!!
Get yours and enjoy !!!

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware - defective (ie "copy protected" disk).......2004-08-02

The music is fine but if you listen to your music on a computer, be aware that the disk is "copy protected" (a nice way of saying "defective by design") so that one track won't play correctly on a computer or transfer to an iPod or MP3 player. You gets pops and stutters. Apparently the makers of the disk presume that we are all thieves and act accordingly; I wanted a legal copy on my iPod because that's how I listen to my music but no dice. They stole my money. Don't let them steal yours.

2 out of 5 stars BOOOOOOOORING...........2004-02-13

I'm not an expert in lounge music, but I know what I like, most of us GenXers like Lounge Music that is smooth, sexy and intriguing, that's what a chilled album should have, something you can listen to while having a nice conversation with your date... However, this copilation is something that you would listen to if you want to put your date to sleep, and I'm not talking about sleeping with your date, I'm talking about watching your date sleep... all in all I thought it lacked imagination and I agree with others when they say it is way too predictable.. Nevertheless, to give it some credit (2stars) there are a couple of songs worth listening to or at least burning into a different cd..

2 out of 5 stars If you're a college freshman..........2003-12-03

...then you might want this to balance your Linkin Park and 50 Cent CDs when you have girls over.

Otherwise, it's not worth your money. There is no mixing on the CDs, and the selections are pretty random. I like the Specials, for example, but I certainly wouldn't have included 'Ghost Town' on a downtempo mix.

If you are over 20, look into releases from Eighteenth Street Lounge (i.e. home of Thievery Corp. and great compilations) and Grand Central Records, or the Naked Music series.

The third in Ultra Records' pioneering, yet dependably commercial downtempo series, Ultra Chilled 3 features more of the silky, jazz-flecked techno that's seen an explosion of popularity in recent years. The first of the two-disc set is packed with safe and sane choices from Beth Orton, Bebel Gilberto, and Koop, along with a Norah Jones-sung cover of Roxy Music's "More Than This." There are a few gems, starting with Alpha's melancholy remix of Coldplay's "Yellow," and ending with Sondre Lerche's quirky and carefree "Dead Passengers." In keeping with the general trend of the series, the second disc explores riskier ground, with Nightmares On Wax's stony trip-hop leading into Flunk's acoustic-tinged cover of New Order's "Blue Monday." Later, Chin Chillaz drop some rumbling dub behind "Trinity," while Freddy & Herman threaten to wake everybody up with an actual dance beat on "Aquarius." Depending on how tired you are of the downtempo scene, Chilled 3 is either a handy collection of post-yoga relaxation mood music, or an opportunity to burn a few great tracks before selling it back. --Matthew Cooke

    3 out of 5 stars I don't bother with the first disc........2005-05-31

Granted, downtempo is not generally my music of choice, but I do enjoy it from time to time. That said, the second disc of this compilation is, in general, pretty good. I didn't bother with the first disc so much because most of it couldn't keep my interest, though I do like the cover of Coldplay's "Yellow". On to the second disc...Flunk's cover of New Order's "Blue Monday" is worth the price of admission on its own. I like Anja Oyen Vister's voice--she sounds a bit like a cross between Björk and Beth Gibbons. That is easily my favorite track on the CD. In second place is "Walking on Fire". The vocals in that track are just beautiful. The spareness of the beginning of that track has a really nice haunting quality about it. The only tracks I don't really care for are "Aquarius" and "Aux Cyclades Electroniques". "Aquarius" I sometimes find repetitive and irritating if I'm in the wrong mood for it. In better moods I can tolerate it. "Aux Cyclades Electroniques" just isn't a very interesting track. It's a bit more "elevator music"-like than the rest of the CD. I agree with other reviewers that this compliation could have been one disc, as long as it was the second one

1 out of 5 stars all good things must come to an end.......2004-03-22

What the hell happened to this cd? After #1 and #2 came out i was itching to get my hands on this one... and when i was done (yes i gave this piece of *poo poo* some 2 hours of my life)listening to this one... i returned it. Trust there are about 3 or 4 good songs, the rest arent even average...they SUCK.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes the first is just a primer.........2004-03-21

The first disc of Ultra Chilled 3 seems to the trained chillout DJ ear as elevator music when compared to some of the mixes done by other DJs like Morlack and the others from the PsyShop crew. But on further listen, I decided to plow straight through to the second disc. 03:2 is excellent, and in my opinion could stand alone if Ultra had decided to go with a one disc compliation instead of two. I really like the track choice of the entire set, but I think the star reduction (in terms of rating) can be accounted to the mixing of the first and the beginning of hte second CD in the case. All in all, I think that it is a good record.

4 out of 5 stars Flunk and Cinematic Orchestra are Real Jems.......2003-10-20

The two best songs on the collection. The rest of it is so-so, good for pretty, relaxing background music.

    1 out of 5 stars what the???.......2003-08-15

I admit, I can't help getting caught up in the the whole "chill-out" music craze. It just gets the best of me.But if this turkey is supposed to relax you, I'm sure a 50 cent cd would get me more "chilled" than this junk.Seriously, I give it credit for 3 good songs on the first disc, but that's about it.The rest is either really freaky sounding acoustic music (friday's dust is one example), or cheap little techno beats. The more chillout cd's I'm buying, the more I come to realize that it's just a trend waiting to burn out-personally, next time I wanna get "chilled", I'll pop in some mellow r n'b, or somethin' jazzy.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as 3.......2006-02-16

Ultra Chilled series got weaker here (though this is a stronger effort than 5). The standouts on the CD are Erlend Oye's, "Prego Amore" and Kelli Ali's beautifully haunting track, "Sunlight in the Rain," both of which you can play over and over again without getting tired. Other than that there is a mix of mediocre songs.

2 out of 5 stars Weakest chilled CD.......2004-03-31

I am a chilled CD fan, but I found this to be the weakest CD in the series. Most of the tracks are slow and uninteresting. I had a hard time finding a single track that I liked. I am surprised that other reviewers rated it so highly; so I had to give my opinion, since I bought it on their recommendations. The only track I liked was the one with Nora Jones doing background, but it alone is not worth the price of the CD. For a much better compilation, check out Ultra Chilled 3, which has many great songs.

    5 out of 5 stars Whoa!.......2004-02-09

This is a great compilation! Every Ultra Chilled has blown me away. These albums take a few listenings to really wrap your mind around, but when you do they will be the ultimate chill out. I don't really even listen to this music very much! This supports the theory that hard-core listeners and people coming from a more mainstream taste can both enjoy this C.D.
I have Each one and they are ALL incredible.

4 out of 5 stars Ultra Chilled is back.......2003-09-26

After the debacle and compilation'o'crap that was Ultra Chilled 3, I was ready to swear off the series as a great thing that had been cloned two too many times. However, the fourth installment truly dives back into ambient waters and delivers some fab music. There are a few blips on the album, but the makers have redeemed themselves. It's worth the money.

    2 out of 5 stars What a dissapointment.......2007-04-09

I was absolutely thrilled with volumes 1-4 in this series. This was, stylistically, more jazzy than chill. It has been a couple years since they released a chill colection. I think that after the feedback they got on this one, they gave up. Nooooo- Just bring back the producers on 1-4!

2 out of 5 stars Ultra Disappoinment! Ranges from poor to mediocre, nothing great. Some Repeats........2006-05-28

As owner of Every single Chill/Lounge music CD I am aware of, this was the biggest dissapointment in a long time. Ultra Chill series 1-4 was outstanding. While Ultra Chill 05 is not a complete disaster, I could not find one song worthy of a 5/5 star rating. Quite a few 4 star songs and lots of 2-3 star songs. Some of the better songs were repeated on older Chill discs or present on other series of lounge discs. There is a lot of Jazz and Latin chill on these two discs, which I also like, but the Jazz/world/latin chill tracks here were repeats or nothing great.

I think the person that rated this 5 stars doesn't own a lot of lounge/chill and is probably a lot easier to please. I'm very dissapointed. Maybe this 'genre' is all dried up! :) Oh well...
I'm off to listen to "Chillout Seesions 8"... Hopefully it will be a lot better. I highly reccomend Chillout seesions by Ministry of Sound. Chillout sessions 1-7 are outstanding... Time to go listen to the new 8!

5 out of 5 stars Different, but still great.......2006-02-13

It does feature a somewhat different, more eclectic, variety of songs than featured previously on this series, but it works very well for me. Much like the "Back To Mine" series, this set shows that there is a lot of variety to what can be called chillout. And just like the previous volumes in this series and the "Back To Mine" albums, this one has been a big hit with my friends at cocktail parties.

1 out of 5 stars Not like the others.......2005-09-22

I just wanted to reiterate the other one stars... if you liked the first UCs, then you may be disappointed. The emphasis seems far less on electronica and more on an eclectic mix of low key music. Some of it isn't bad, but I feel like someone stuck a lot of remakes of old jazz songs into what had once been a compilation series of forward looking trance/electronica, etc.

1 out of 5 stars Ultra Lazy Effort.......2005-06-10

A big fan of the Ultra Chilled compilations since their stellar first effort, this latest incarnation is deeply disappointing. Not only does it feature old songs (The Postal Service? Nina Simone?), it includes music that was already used--"Angels" by Wax Poetic and Norah Jones (albeit in a SLIGHTLY different form)--on last year's Ultra.Chilled 04.

Ultra.Chilled used to be a great way to discover up-and-coming artists, or explore some lesser-known names in the genre. By including mainstream artists like Moby (and to some extent, The Postal Service), the series has become about as creative as the NOW compilations.

More importantly, the music collected here is poorly mixed, and just plain unenjoyable. These two discs are the very opposite of what they should be--easy listening. Not surprisingly, the strongest track is from Federico Aubele, who's signed to Eighteenth Street Lounge music, the label created and maintained by the geniuses behind Thievery Corporation. Instead of this album, I'd recommend anything on the ESL label, purveyor of some of the spiffiest and most polished chillout music around.
