About the Artist
This year marks the 45th anniversary of the release of "Kind of Blue" and Gary Guthrie has plied his "what if" curiosity by producing one of the more intriguing jazz records of 2004 - "A New Kind of Blue," a fresh version of Miles Davis' classic. Featuring recent Grammy winner Randy Brecker channeling the spirit of Davis, Guthrie's studio group - dubbed " g.org " (pronounced "g - dot - org") - stretches the "New Blue" well past the 45-minute limits of the vinyl LP heyday, brings its production values into the digital realm, plus captures several of the missing ingredients critics have been scratching their head about for years. "A New Kind of Blue" was recorded at New York's Sony Studios on April 8, 2004 and features Randy Brecker on trumpet, David Finck on bass, Victor Lewis on drums, Chuck Loeb on guitar, Mike Ricchiuti on piano and Andy Snitzer on alto saxophone. Guthrie's instructions to the band were simple: To give the set some intense color and an authentic! , emotive reading; solo within the scale; let things stretch out a bit; and give the listener a chance to experience the different sonics of that moment if it were to happen today. "It became evident very early on that if I consciously made room for serendipity, there would be more of a chance to take advantage of it. Just like Miles' approach, the first ideas were usually the best ideas." Part of Guthrie's approach was to go before Kind of Blue and see what Miles' inspiration was for creative material. One of the elements that showed up was the role of guitar in Fifties jazz and how Miles was picking up on Ahmad Jamal's experiments including the instrument in his combo. Davis even asked Philly Joe Jones to replicate guitar licks as drum hits to give passages some exclamation marks. Guthrie thought, "Can you imagine what a guitarist would've brought to the original Blue'?" And, with that, he brought in one of the Smooth Jazz format's aces, Chuck Loeb. "With Chuck, I not only got a fellow Baby Boomer who cut his teeth on Blue' but one who learned his Wes-like licks as a student of Jim Hall and Pat Metheny." Loeb, in turn, became the session leader and lined up the other players to form Guthrie's newest version of his g.org. The collective experiences of the lineup range from Stan Getz to Portishead to the Rolling Stones to winning three Jazz Grammys. The CD features the original sequence of Blue' tracks, plus Evans' "Peace Piece" - the Evans' tune used as a basis for "Flamenco Sketches" - reverently included as the prelude to "Sketches" in a close-your-eyes moment from Mike Ricchiuti. Three other elements that make this project interesting are: -Loeb quoting the original arrangement for Chet Baker's "Alone Together" that Evans used for the structure of "Blue in Green" -An extended, jam-like version (22 minutes) of "All Blues" -Mastering by Mark Wilder, the man who has worked with the origina l"Kind of Blue" more than any man on the planet through his remastering role at Sony The CD version is a limited edition and contains an extra track. Each CD is signed/numbered.

Our Kind of Soul, the follow-up to 2003's VH1-propelled Do It for Love, is mostly a can't-miss proposition: Daryl Hall's smooth, expressive voice, synonymous with the Philly soul sound, is so well suited to this material that it feels shrink-wrapped overtop. "Can't Get Enough of Your Love," the Barry White classic, is given a breezy makeover (and, maybe more impressively considering that most artists wouldn't touch it, not mangled); Teddy Pendergrass' "Love TKO" is dusted off and tinkered with till it takes on a signature H&O sound; and "After the Dance," one of Marvin Gaye's most cryptic compositions, comes across like a solved mystery--there's a gentleness and a reverie in the reading will prompt thoughtful listeners to return to it more than a few times. That said, a couple of these covers--the O'Jays "Used to Be My Girl" and Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady"--seem cursory, and the duo can count on a cranky contingent decrying their lack of fresh material. But the strength of three songs introduced here should keep them at bay. First track "Let Love Take Control" gutsily and convincingly glides into Four Tops' "Standing in the Shadows of Love," "Soul Violins" strikes notes at once heartfelt and spontaneous, and "Don't Turn Your Back" has the classic Hall & Oates marks of their-kind-of-soul songs like "Out of Touch." --Tammy La Gorce

Gettin Back to the Basics.......2007-05-26
This is their best work in a long time. They recorded a lot of classic soul songs. What makes this collection so unique is they recorded them close to how the songs were originally written. They use acoustic guitars and violins. Of course they put the classic H&O style. In many cases their version is better than the original.
There are a couple of new songs on the CD also. I like those also. I notice the boys are getting back to their roots the older they get. I would give this CD a 10 out of 10. With the best song being Soul Violins. If you like soul music this is a must for your collection.
The more I listen to this CD the more I like it! There is nothing better than sweet soul music done with acoustic instruments. I started reading the cover and found the CD was recorded in 5 weeks at Daryl's home in the Bahamas!
The background vocals are amazing. I just love the way they harmonize with each other. Daryl still has his pipes and can still hit those really high notes. He does a great rendition of the Al Green classic "Still in Love".
I heard an interview with John Oates one time were he said "he brings a certain shortness to the group". I think he is selling himself short! (Ha I made a pun) His rendition of "Ooh Child" is remarkable. It's like the song was written for him.
I noticed that on many of the songs some of the lyrics and the key were changed. At first I had a problem with this, because I am used to hearing the songs done a certain way. I get it now! They took these classic R&B songs and made them Hall & Oates songs. This was done intentionally and I have to say it works.
Timeless, Ageless, Music.......2007-05-12
When I heard #3 played on the radio, I looked everywhere for the CD. I recognized D.Hall's voice right away. This is MUSIC,timeless, ageless talent and style. Thank you AMAZON.com and Thanks to Hall and Oates.
Call me!
Daryl Still knows what Soul is all about. .......2007-04-25
Hall and Oats were one of the only Blue Eye Soul groups I believed understood what soul is about. Over the years I haven't heard much from them. I just happen to catch the concert on tv, it looked like it was at some big bar in the suburbs at first. But I understand it was in the Bahama's.
I was very delighted to hear that Daryl Hall still can sing. The songs were not songs from their music but covers of various R&B songs from people such as Gladys Knght and the O'Jays and the Four Tops. and one or two newer original songs. Whoever said their version of the O'Jays, She Use to Be My Girl was the worst song he ever heard must not of listened to any of the 10,000 cd's he has. It was fine, I get nervous when people sing covers of great R&B songs. Most do it pretty horrendously. Not Daryl Hall even 34 years later the man can still sing and he does a very good job singing that song. Surprisingly he took on sacred cows like Neither One of Us, by Gladys Knight and he was excellent. He did not try to over sing Gladys, he made the song his own. He sang Rock Steady like he has been singing it all of his life.
Same with Marvin Gaye's song.
Again I will say Hall and Oates were the only Blue Eye Soul group particulary Daryl Hall who knows what soul is about and that is why they were able to tackle songs most singers would sound foolish singing. This CD proves it.
'Used ta be my girl' gets my vote for worst song of all time!.......2007-03-13
I consider myself a music expert or something close to it. I own close to 10,000 albums. I say this because I hope that you will listen to some very good advice. Do not buy this album. Do not borrow it from the library. If you see it in the record store, look away as fast as you can. 'She used to be my girl' is the WORST song I have ever heard. That is taking into consideration all of the generic bubblegum pop, 80's hair metal, disco, and rock blands that I have had the misfortune to hear. To describe it as infinitely dreadful would be giving it too much credit. 'The O'Jays' should be ashamed and embarrassed that they are responsible for this miserable catastrophe of a 'song.' Daryl Hall & John Oates simply take 'worst' to a whole new low. Absolutely horrible! Hearing this song is like being forced to eat cow dung while suspended by your toe nails above a steaming pit of molten lead. Please, do not buy this album! (Rating: No stars whatsoever!)
EXCELLENT.......2007-03-12
ALways loved this group....own several of their CD's and this is by far my favorite. Darryl Hall's phrasing of his songs are superb.

Well worth the price.......2006-04-13
I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.
Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23
It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).
In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.
Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.
Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15
It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.
Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25
This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!
Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05
It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

Great (I suppose) if you already know the words.......2003-03-13
For me, the voices were faint relative to the musical instruments. It was difficult to hear them. Yet, the language was so stylized that, even when heard, understanding the words was tedious and exasperating. Most mannerisms of the stage originated in purposeful behavior, I feel sure, but they detract from the performance when overindulged. I think I'd prefer a studio recording in which the singers sang with unpretentious style right into a microphone, and the audio engineer adjusted tone and timbre. I imagine elitists cluck-clucking about the purity of music without microphones. In my opinion, if you're making a CD, then you've sinned already, so why not go all the way and make a great CD? If my dear reader remains with me at this stage of my rant, I say the performance at the opera house may be mahvelous and pristine, but a CD and an opera house are different media, and performers should optimize for the medium. However, this recording of Pinafore is the best I've found of the sad available lot. I'd rate it 2 stars if it weren't superlative.
... He's hardly ever sick at sea ...........2001-07-31
I must admit, I only bought the opera because I was rather amused by Sideshow Bob's rendition of the HMS Pinafore (Cape Feare, The Simpsons). Since then, I've bought (and enjoyed) the Mikado, planning to get the Pirates of Penzance soon. This opera is both hilarious and beautiful, mainly thanks to a great performance by the D'Oyly Carte opera company. If you're at all interested in classical music and the opera (which you should be), this is something that everyone should have.
Outstanding recording - average selection.......2001-06-14
Nothing more needs to be said about this superb D'Oyly Carte Pinafore, which won a well-dseerved Rosette from the Penguin Guide. Yet, in this highlights disc, I find that despite containing most of the major scenes, I dearly wish that Decca had chosen the excerpts a little more carefully. The lack of the entire "Carefully on tiptoe stealing" sequence seems to be an extremely serious minus in my book, particularly when it presents a sharp twist in the story. In addition, I also find that the inclusion of the entire "Over the bright blue sea" sequence is a little too - too redundent because the entrance of Sir Joseph is more important. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful disc of Pinafore excerpts. It presents a generous selection of excerpts that offers a good playing time without affecting sales of the complete set, and it also is enough to make one feel contented for a long time before purchasing the complete recording.
A generous selection!.......2001-01-05
With so much of the recording offered as highlights it would have been better to purchase the full operetta. This recording dates from 1960 and is superalative in every respect. John Reed, Jean Hindmarsh, Thomas Round together with the late Donald Adams are reasons enough to acquire this version. The only missing quality is the dialogue. Never was the libretti of Gilbert ever spoken with more relish for the language and with such finesse. If you decide upon further investigation I urge you to do so.

I order the cd based in the two reviews I read in Amazon. I have to say my clients love it and I share their opinion.
Intoxicating!.......2007-03-22
When I first listened to this CD, it did very little for me. I was expecting something a bit less gentle/subtle.
But now -- about a year later -- it has become part of my nightly ritual. I start it up and let it carry me away from the day's stress and aggravations. It is really good for getting into that meditative place that feels so wonderful after a busy day.
Sometimes I will even wake up in the middle of the night and start it playing so that it fills the place with beautiful sound.
I will be looking for more compilations like this one and hope the collaborators responsible for this will be working on more recordings.
remasterpiece pure delight .......2004-11-19
I have listen to this fantastic album many times now and I have to say it is a wonderful cd to relax too. My favourite track is track 8 I would recomend this cd to anyone even if you dont normaly like classical music. I congratulate this duo and would love to see this remasterpiece performed live at the Royal Albert Hall...

A Magical Musical Journey Around the World with Mantovani........2005-02-23
The soaring strings of the original orchestra led by the late great Mantovani are once again presented in this brand new Vocalion release of two of the maestro's masterpiece recordings first released in 1964 (Folk Songs) and 1968 (Tango). Folk Songs from Around the World will charm and excite listeners with melodies as diverse as Aura Lee (what Elvis sang as Love Me Tender) and the sizzling sounds of Hava Nagila. The highly disciplined orchestra under the baton of Mantovani perform spectacular arrangements of "Two Guitars" from Russia and folk songs from Japan, Europe, and the British Isles arranged with such artistry that they will readily evoke from each listener intense emotions. The splendid orchestrations found on the Tango tracks also evoke a variety of emotions, with Whatever Lola Wants, Hernando's Hideaway and Takes Two to Tango, offering playful amusement, and such tracks as Blue Sky, Orange Vendor, and Tango Delle Rose combining captivating tango rhythms with time honored melodies made ever more delightful by the unique, cathedral sound identified exclusively with Mantovani. In an interview at the time of the Tango album's release, the ever perfectionist Mantovani expressed his delight with the musical outcome, noting that he tried "blending fine melodies with exciting rhythms to produce a sound that is stimulating.." Acquire this two CD-set, and new and old Mantovani fans will know the maestro was right on the mark in his assessment of this incomparable musical journey.

A Different Kind Of Blue.......2002-07-03
This recording is superb! One of the best around! Very soothing
and mellow tunes that help to relax you. For anybody who loves guitar music as much as I do, I highly recommend this CD. It
also contains a few bouncy rhythms to help round out the theme
of this recording. Very well done.

Customer Reviews:
yes you are a snob.......2000-01-20
sure this is a marketing exercise, but its fun. Tomita's electronic Debussy may not be to your taste, but its a beautiful fusion of Japanese and Western sensibilities overlain and underpinned by the combination of the electronic and classical genres, which can only be appreciated by those with a truly musical soul
Marketing boys and their marketing toys.......1999-07-08
I hate to sound like a snob, but it's hard to imagine anyone over the age of 5 being at all intrigued by this silly little CD. The music is great, well mostly great, of course, and a couple of the performances (Reiner's "Zarathustra," Gould's "Grand Canyon") are among the best out there. Others (Tomita's awful synthesized Debussy) scrape the bottom of the barrel. The big question is WHO is likely to enjoy something like this? Only children and adults with very, very limited attention spans who don't like really classical music, I'll wager.

Album Description
Two CD set combining a pair of long-deleted solo albums by singer/songwriter Stephen Cummings, best known for fronting the Austrialian New Wave/Pub Rock band The Sports in the late '70s and early '80s. Both Lovetown (1987) and A New Kind Of Blue (1988) feature fantastic songwriting, although Cummings' solo work is far more somber and Blues-influenced than his energetic days in The Sports. Both albums have been digitally remastered and feature bonus tracks. Liberation. 2006.
