Editorial Reviews
Jazz Times, May 2001
...the performances clearly show von Essen to be an inventive composer with a knack for melody.

5 out of 5 stars This ain't no smooth jazz, baby!.......2001-05-21

Relaxing music (without being insulting to your intelligence) played by solid jazz players. This is the kind of music that I always pictured would be playing in a Manhattan apartment with a view when I made it big in editing someday.... It has that feeling of resignation and reflection that seem to color much jazz music with a distinctly urban palette. Most of these musicians played with Von Essen before he passed away fairly recently and the experience colors the playing, by my assessment. The music sounds respectful, dignified, careful (as in "done with care," as opposed to a code word for "stodgy"). This isn't music to romance someone with. It's what I'd listen to if I wanted to be alone, working something out in my mind -- my gaze blank and ears letting in the sounds.
