Rose Colered Glasses.......2006-07-21
This is a very good albun. I think most of the songs you will
want to hear more than once. Most albuns you only get one or
two you really like. Not this one.

CD great!.......2006-07-06
The CD arrived in "record" time (excuse the pun)! Recommend this seller for truth in product and quick delivery! A+++
I'm Not A Country Music Fan...But I Love This Guy!!.......2005-10-20
I'll never forget hearing "Rose Colored Glasses" on the radio as a child years ago. John Conlee has a distinctive voice that is well suited to singing sad songs about the hard knocks we all face along life's journey.
Since then, I've never been much of a country music fan. However, certain artists can perfectly capture the spirit of a music genre. What the Rolling Stones are to rock, what Mozart is to classical, what Miles Davis is to jazz, John Conlee is to country-- near perfect!
Fab!.......2000-07-21
A great compilation for the general country fan. Brings back many happy memories of my parents listening to their records!
worth it for the title track alone.......1999-01-30
Rose Colored Glasses will eventually stand the test of time as one of the all time classic C/W songs. Poignant, stirring lyrics will stay with you long after you've forgotten Garth, Shanaia, et.al. A rather simple song about loving more than being loved, and unable to let go, Rose Colored Glasses will stay with you after a single listen.

Goodbye, Tim...........2002-12-17
Tim Rose passed away in London on September 24th at the age of 62.

My short review........2002-03-10
I don't have as much to say about this album as the other reviewers do -- I'm just putting in my two cents here. This is an excellent folk/rock album. I came across Tim Rose through the works of Nick Cave (who was highly influenced by Tim Rose) and Einstürzende Neubauten. I loved Nick Cave's versions of "Long Time Man" and "Hey Joe" (and, of course, Jimi Hendrix's as well) and Einstürzende Neubauten's version of "Morning Dew", so I decided to track down the originial Tim Rose versions. Fortunately, this disc has all of them. Upon listening to it, I discovered that Tim Rose had a lot more going for him than those songs. Shortly into the first song, I said to myself that this guy sounds like Ray Charles (vocally, and there is also some similar piano licks in it too). Later, when I read the liner notes, I discovered that the Ray Charles comparison had already been made. His voice is strong and melancholy and, at times, angry. If you're a fan of music from the '60s or a fan of Nick Cave (so you can hear his influences), I would recommend this.
LONG TIME MAN.......2000-06-30
The late Tim Rose could best be described as as sort of homicidal Joe Cocker. Ominous intent lurks behind many of his songs, especially the likes of "Morning Dew". I first came across him through Nick Cave's cover of "Long Time Man". I loved the song & had to find out who this guy was. All of which led me to hearing Rose's arrangement of "Hey Joe", another classic murder ballad. Though it may not be as famous as Hendrix's, it's not hard to figure out that Tim's earlier cut provided the inspiration.
In terms of love songs, Rose was a belter with a big chip on his shoulder. I suppose his attitude could best be summed up by the title of his follow up, LOVE...A KIND OF HATE STORY. It's a voice that can be cruel, boastful & seemingly devoid of pity--- before suddenly slipping into shy, wounded vulnerbility. "You're Slipping Away From Me" is a prime example.
On "What'cha Gonna Do", he seems to revel in playing the cad only to pull the rug out & reveal the pathetic desperation behind the pose.
Also notable are world-weary numbers like "Come Away, Melinda" & "Eat, Drink & Be Merry". Originals like, "Angela" prove that murder wasn't the only kind of ballad he could write.
Of course, alot of the intrumentation & arrangements are dated in that late 60's way. But Roses' raspy belt punches a hole right through all the Tom Jones style "muscle-horns" & drippy, Neil Sedaka strings.
Though I'm not a fan, one could easily say Rose falls more into Neil Diamond than Bob Dylan territory. But there's just something a little too raw & edgy for him to be so easily pidgeon-holed. Which may account for the fact, that despite his talent as a singer, that big career making hit always seemed to elude him.
For further listening, I'd certainly recommend, LOVE...A KIND OF HATE STORY & SNOWED IN which was released shortly after his death. For the full story on Rose & others like him, check out the book, AMERICAN TROUBADORS by Mark Brand.
master singer/songwriter's acoustic period.......2000-05-14
Tim Rose is one of those mythical legends of rock whose work is widely discussed, but rarely heard, by audiophiles with historical interest in the development of the folk-rock genre. Beat Goes On Records of the UK has compiled Rose's first two albums, 24 tracks running 72 minutes, onto 1 disc in this compilation. "Tim Rose" contains his best known works, "Morning Dew" covered by Nazareth and the Allman Brothers, among others, "Come Away Melinda" made popular by Uriah Heep and UFO, and "Hey Joe" recorded by The Leaves, Jimi Hendrix, Love, and the Byrds, among so many. In each case, Rose's arrangement was the inspiration for the cover versions despite the fact that he didn't actually pen any of these songs, although he did claim co-writing credit on "Morning Dew." Rose's 1967 debut album, the first 12 tracks on this disc are superior to the final 12 which composed the 1970 "Through Rose Colored Glasses" lp. Sidemen on the first lp included guitarists Hugh McCracken and Jay Berliner, bassist Felix Pappalardi (later of Mountain, and Cream's producer), and drummer Bernard Purdie. David Rubinson, known for his work with Moby Grape, among others, produced the debut album, while the second album, which contained no musician credits, was produced by Jack Tracy. While the first lp is by far the better, throughout Rose's gravelly voice and strong emotion give the recordings a quality of genuineness rarely matched. This disc sums up Rose's acoustic period and is the perfect complement to RPM Records' compilation "Tim Rose" & "Love-A Kind of Hate Story" another 2album on 1 disc compilation available. Do yourself a favor and grab them both and get ready to journey back to the mid to late 1960s and experience one of the big influences on the development of folk-rock music. For history buffs, Rose was a member of The Big 3 with Cass Elliott and played guitar for the Journeymen which included John Phillips and Scott McKenzie (of "San Francisco" fame).

Smooth and Enjoyable.......1999-10-07
I am a "huge" Warren Hill fan and really enjoyed his CD "Life Thru Rose Colored Glasses". I bought the CD because of the cuts "Take Me Away" and "Turn Out The Lights" which I heard on my local jazz radio station, but have found the entire CD to be smooth and enjoyable. I also own the "Devotion" CD and now I enjoy listening to them both! Thanks for the great music Warren. Keep up the good work!!
good album, but !!.......1999-03-23
This is a very good album from the very talented Mr Hill, but the vocal track should definately NOT have been included. Great sax playing - let down by the singing. Despite this, go out and buy this CD you won't be disappointed.

Happy music at its best.......2004-07-30
The 1920s music is the most positive, elevating popular music of the past 100 years. And the San Francisco Starlight Orchestra reproduces it perfectly. It's a terrific band, and if you don't like this CD -- well, you must be a grouch.
Paul Whiteman 1920's/early 30's Fans Will Love This One!.......2001-02-28
The SFSO's CD's are always top quality in every way. They authentically recreate the sound of the 16 member (or so) bands of the latter 20's and early 30's. Their selections reflect the "sweet jazz" with "hot jazz" interludes in virtually every number.
If you are a fan of Paul Whiteman, early Duke Ellington, McKinney's Cotton Pickers, you'll enjoy this one.
Ed Rosenback's "Bing-like" laid back vocals, plus the vocals of Bob Schultz and Janine Marie complement the orchestration. The numbers were arranged to allow plenty of room for improvised solo interludes, showing off Bob Schultz's hot cornet--but really all the instruments seem to have a turn at bat and none strike out!
Songs include: Shaking the Blues Away, Your Getting to Be A Habit with Me, You Took Advantage of Me, The Varsity Drag, and When You're Counting the Stars Alone.
Definitely one of my personal top 10.
