5 out of 5 stars Drums and Bass Lesson.......2004-08-15

Here we have some of the greatest musicians to ever grace the earth. Anthony Jackson (one of the top five bass players of our time) who considerably raised the standard , and Steve Gadd, the greatest drummer in the world. If one wants to learn how to play music in it's purest form listen to this recording among the countless other recordings these incomparably brilliant musicians have touched with their genius.

5 out of 5 stars In Continous Rotation.......2003-02-13

I've been enjoying the LP for many years. I'm waiting for a CD re-master with super duper treatment like a remix & HDCD. The Lp is early digital..... lets bring this great work up to date.

5 out of 5 stars ELEVATOR Music????.......2003-02-04

I haven't heard this particular CD, so am not in a postion to rate it. However, I am familiar with and impressed by many other Grusin pieces, hence, my reason for searching this site for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING composed/performed by him. He is a first rate Jazz artist, able to blend with amazing dexterity, and diversity, the intellectual sophistication of jazz with melodious strains that ultimately make music not only palatable but enjoyable. Grusin is one of the few artists whose works I would purchase, unheard, with no fear of disappointment. If Jack's Theme (Main Theme) from the Fabulous Baker Boys is not Jazz, I don't know what is! Unfortunately, I think our good friend Steve typfies the type of Jazz aficionado who makes the words "Jazz" and "snob" synonymous. If this is elevator music, push no "floors" for me, baby - I'm in it for the l-o-n-g ride!

4 out of 5 stars A Jazz Classic.......2002-07-04

This is a "must have" item for the complete jazz collector. I have seen the video version, but do not have a copy. Thus, my question is: when are we going to see a DVD version of this memorable Tokyo concert? Even though I have the audio CD, I would definitely buy a video edition on DVD. GRP, get on it!

4 out of 5 stars Someone is on the wrong elevator.......2000-04-30

I just read the review, "Elevator Music in Disguise" and I have to go on line to disagree. This is an exceptional gathering of some fine musicians including Dave Grusin, Don Grusin, Lee Ritenouer, Tiger Ripoche, and a few others I don't remember right now. I owned this record in a vinyl edition and was looking for a replacement CD. Grusin plays some mellow stuff on various recordings, but this recording is anything but elevator music. Check out cuts like Shuffle City and Countdown. This recording may not be a certain type of jazz, but is unquestionably jazz and a real treasure as far as I am cancerned.

5 out of 5 stars Oh my gawd...........2004-06-24

What a wondrous singer...I absolutely agree with all the other reviews here but add:

1) he sounds as though he's singing in his First Language, whether it be French, English, German or Russian.

2) he lets his soul come out (simce Mme Callas this remains a rare event).

3) Sidebar: the San Francisco Merry Widow, whilst a delight and a wonder, is NOT fair to this man's voice.

A magnificent recital album. Every prominent opera singer out there should be jealous.

5 out of 5 stars Bo Knows Opera.......2002-08-28

In the forward to this cd, John Bell Young, makes the argument that the darker, mellow baritone is an often underated part of the opera repetoire. I don't fully agree with him - there are fantastic, exciting lead roles for these men: Hamlet, Nabucco, Rigoletto, and The Barber of Seville - all glittering showcases of virtuoso. And even the supporting roles they often play, are thrilling - Scarpia can easily steal the show away from Tosca and her hero with his magnicent, albeit short, scenes; and Escamillo often wins not only the affection of Carmen, but that of an entire opera house... Still, all said and done, this is an interesting introduction to a man who is every bit as dashing, musical, and talented as any tenor to grace the stage.
Bo Skovhus showcases such extreme range in vocal talents and emotion. His tone is beautiful. His breath control and phrasing are astounding. Diction is clear and defined - especially the German arias. This is an extremely talented man.
The Korngold aria is mesmerizing in it's romantic beauty. But my favorite selections on this album are the pieces from "Hamlet"; this is french lyricism at its most marvelous, glorious, heart-sweeping grandeur. I can not imagine a better man to play this most famous anti-hero.
I cannot recommend this cd highly enough. While some Italian arias would have been a nice addition, I won't hold it against my recommendation. Skovhus's interpretation of the tenor's aria from "Werther" makes up for this.
Next time you are out purchasing yet another famous tenor's album, to hear the one hundreth version of "Celeste Aida", buy this cd instead. Give this baritone a chance, and soon you'll be humming songs a minor third lower.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER WONDERFUL BARITONE.......2002-08-23

I first heard Bo Skovhus on a Laser Disc recording of the War Requem. I was very impressed. However until this opera recital I had not heard him again. This is truly an impressive recording. I place him up there with my other favorite baritones! He's still young so, hopefully, he has many more good years left in him!

5 out of 5 stars Bo Skovhus at his best.......2002-05-17

Bo Skovhus' lovers undoubtedly awaited this comprehensive choice of arias, which almost concludes his (still young) operaic work. Well known alongside less known operas constitutes a perfect choice. From Verdi through Thomas, from Korngold to Britten and the Russian arias, mastering the variety of languages, and dealing with every single role in a very sensitive way. This unique choice and the qualities of his full, beautiful and warm voice makes one regret, that the entire opera was not recorded with him in the relevant roles, like Thomas's Hamlet for example, or Britten's Billy Budd. It leaves a taste of wanting to hear more of this young and talented Baritone, whose repertoire is much larger than could be presented in one - indeed excellent - CD.

5 out of 5 stars Light years beyond Hampson.......2001-12-09

I just can't heap enough praise on Skovhus. I saw him for the first time at the Houston Grand Opera in a production of Billy Budd and was sold. This CD demonstrates very well what an immensely expressive and flexible voice Skovhus possesses. He has incredible core to his voice which allows him to attack bravado sections with zeal, but also has the musical expressivity to pull back and caress piano lines with ease and artistry while still maintaining his core sound. Hampson, who is notorious for becoming breathy and pop-like in pianissimo passages, can't touch Skovhus with a 10, 100, or 1000 foot pole.

Skovhus is undoubtedly one of the most talented lyric baritones of our time. He ranks right up there in terms of vocal talent with Brynn Terfel, and far beyond Terfel in terms of total artistry. In fact, I wouldn't be going to far to claim that Skovhus is one of the best baritones EVER (my apologies to James Maddalena). Trust me when I say that you would do yourself a disservice to NOT buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Dmitri.......2002-04-11

This exserts from various CDs that previously released came out in 97'. This collection includes the most favorite Hvorostovsky repertories. If you are starter as his fan, this is a good introduction for you. You can taste his great flexibility and beautiful, high artistic quality of his voice. Who else could handle Verdi, Bell Cantos, Tchaikovsky and Russian traditional folks so well. And he can do whole lot more. He has good deal of recital discography, I recomend those individual recital CDs. Dmitri Hvorostovsky is one of the best and most appreciated baritone now. He'll take you to Heaven while you listening to him.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Don Giovanni!.......2002-02-26

Rene Pape has said that tenors have "ruined the landscape" for the other voices. If that is so then Dmitri Hvorostovsky is rapidly restoring the baritone area! This is one of his eary CD's-he set a high standard for himself and lives up to it. Here he does beautiful, touching and fun baritone arias from Verdi, Rossini and of course Tchaikovsky's especially beautiful "Yevgany Onegin" with cool precision, never sacrificing accuracy for emotion. A perfect technition. But my favorites are the Russian folk songs where he gives us a taste of his passion and fire and a hint of maddness! He is not afraid to let us hear him sweat! You detect an ache or throb in his voice. I love how he tosses off the last note of "Karabejniki" makes me smile every time! I also love the delicate, complex beauty of the Ossipov Russian Folk Orchestra.

This review is totally influenced by the fact I got to hear Dmitri in recital (you know you have been sung to!) He is a consumate professional-handsome, poised, bringing the audience along to warm to him. After a particularily arduous Verdi aria, he leaned back against the piano in mock exhaustion and blew his hair off his forehead. The audience was his!

Also recommended is "Credo", his disc of Russian sacred music where he affirms that "beauty will save the world". Amen.

4 out of 5 stars Try it once, you will be hooked.......2001-08-08

The first song you should play on this album is "Dark Eyes." Hvorostovsky sings it like a man being driven insane. I think I would buy the album just to hear that piece. After playing it a half dozen times, I moved on to the Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and the terrific "Figaro" -- all outstanding, sung with feeling and wonderful shading. The other Italian pieces are good too, I'm just not sure they're the best choices as some of them are rather staid set pieces. After a lifetime of tenors, I am hooked on Hvorostovsky!

5 out of 5 stars a Dmitri intro.......2001-02-12

This compilation runs the gamut of many styles, from Donizetti to folk songs, recorded between '90 and '94, and sung by this extraordinary and versatile Siberian baritone. Though it doesn't include some of his finest work, the songs with solo piano accompaniment...my favorite being "Russian Romances" with music by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff.

You've probably heard "Largo al Factotum" one too many times, and here it is again. It's kind of a yardstick for a singers technique, and he passes with flying colors. The folk songs ! You've probably heard "Ochi Chornyje" ("Dark Eyes") a million times too...but who can get enough of it ? And here it's sung with unbridled passion. The arias from "Eugene Onegin" and "Pique Dame" are a glory, the "Di Provenza il Mar" incredibly smooth, and the CD ends with a lovely "O Carlo, Ascolta".

There's a golden honey tone to his magnificent voice that makes one able to pick it out after 2 or 3 notes when heard at random. Once you're a Dmitri fan (doesn't take long), you'll want CDs that aren't as mixed in style, and this is one that you'll play the least...but it's a good intro to the voice and artistry of the one and only Dmitri...one of the greats of this or any other era.

I really enjoyed this CD but I did find the last song...well not in line with the rest of his CD. Really great music overall but not Brian Culbertson/Dave Koz or Richard Elliot

    Cheers

1 out of 5 stars This is jazz????.......2004-04-08

Did the other reviewers listen to the same CD that I did? Sorry -this is nothing more than well-played crap - and by crap I don't mean any disrespect. But if I want to hear this kind of elevator music, I'll dial up some company's customer service line and listen to the music on hold. To even call this stuff jazz is an insult to any real jazz musician (or, frankly, any other musician, as well).

    5 out of 5 stars This Is A Classic!.......2003-11-09

Every now and then, an artist creates something that is so beautiful and enduring that it sets a standard for others to reach. This is such an effort. Steve Cole has created a Smooth Jazz masterpiece. I am glad to see that creative musicians such as he are taking the genre to new and different places with their music. If you are a Smooth Jazz fan, NY LA should have a place of promenence in your collection. It is highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky fine, but Verdi..........2003-10-25

Hvorostovsky has a beautiful voice, and he is evidently at ease singing the arias from Russian operas. But I have my doubts about his technique and interpretation of the arias by Verdi. Especially il balen from il trovatore is interesting: throughout the aria he tries singing two phrases with one breath, with the result that he forces his voice, and then has a sharp intake of breath before snatching at the next phrase- very exhausting to listen to! Why he should do it, I don't know- maybe trying to impress with his ability to hold a note? Certainly, it doesn't enhance the music or drama, and I'm sure Verdi would not have approved. Cappuccilli often combines two phrases where other singers take a breath, but he does it effortlessly, and it enhances rather than detracts from the flow of the music; even he sings il balen as it is written, with appropriate pauses for breath.

    5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......1999-10-21

This is baritone singing as good as I've heard for a long time. The singing and the sound quality are both amazing and I highly recommend this CD!

4 out of 5 stars beautiful palate of sound.......2004-10-30

James Dillon's music can be described as a blend of the New Complexity and Spectralism. Despite the dense bundles of notes that characterize Dillon's works, he is always concerned with the sound color that is produced by them. He seems, like Spectralists Tristan Murail and Gerard Grisey, to be preoccupied with the nature of sound itself -- its physical properties -- and allowing that influence to guide the composition.

"La Femme Invisible" is a feast of spinning, twittering notes that are generated by sonorous bell sounds. Something like the fall leaves swirling in the wind, the colors that Dillon generates are downright sumptuous. The sections of this piece (and all of the work on this disc, for that matter) proceed by defining themselves in terms of density of activity. The bells mark out different sections, usually separated by a pause. This might seem simple, but the clarity of expression is necessary for the complex blending of instruments within the sections. A gorgeous piece.

"Windows and Canopies" is even more complex, alternating thickets of swarming sounds (the "Canopies") with fairly transparent sections (the "Windows"). Plenty of unusual timbres are used and it is amazing that the orchestra here is about the same size as Mozart's.

The only disappointment on the disc is "East 11th Street." The piece goes on too long without enough differentiation in the piece. Working with the more limited sound color world of the percussion, Dillon seems to not have as many ideas as in the other exciting works on the disc.

The performances are very good and the "La Femme Invisible" and "Windows and Canopies" recommend this recording highly.

5 out of 5 stars chamber music ??an ongoing challenge.......2001-07-30

music for small ensemble, some call it chamber music for orchestra has been a well preserved/reserved situation inhabiting a richness of conceptual challenge that composers can explore. Chamber works of the avant-garde, (a relative label and an inadequete one) has from its inception seems never to have abandoned the conceptual seduction,a temptuousness genre of its inherent complexity, timbral technical and conceptual. One only need to simply ponder the early masterworks in this genre,as Stockhausen's Kontrapunkt, or Kreuzspiel,or Boulez's Le Marteau sans Maitre, Berio's Circles,or Nono's Canto sospeso. Dillon here seems to find his own voice in this difficult genre, for if you step too hastily or with too much arrogance of your supposed composer technical skills, this ensemble genre can bury you forever, cast you into oblivion, an outcast renegade of mediocrity. Dillon's 'East 11th St. NY' (1982) is for six percussionists, and obviously Edgar Varese's 'Ionization'hovers in the flux and comes readily to mind. Dillon here to circumvent this, (whether he thought of that or not)and proceeds to create these massive richly diverse sheets of percussion sound, largily with the aid of rolls on metal instruments as tam-tam, gong, various sized cymbals, and chimes. Chimes seems to stick out awkardly at times, and perhaps it is a timbre which strikes him personally of his native Scotland. The liner notes reveal the work's premise as an exchange and contrast of percussive timbre. A simple premise, yet one filled with treacherous associations and obvious manipulations, predictable on hearing. Dillon who had studied linguistics here seems to know the durational longevity of his materials, and doesn't overtax their frames, allowing the unique percussive timbre to be heard. Much of the work comes across as a giant behemoth wind chime, flowly quietly at times, other times violently as the indeterminate wind kicks it to and fro. Dillon has worked within the realm of electronic means, and you sense this in his 'Windows and Canopies'(1985) here, Although written for a modest Haydnesque like chamber grouping, the timbres are very much electronic in their mixtures or effect. Again we find pure textures of micropolyephony, dense filigrees, yet light, nothing overwhelmingly heavy, 2 Flutes,2 Oboes, Bassoon,2 Horns, one percussionist with 7 Violins, 2 Violas, 2 Violoncellos, and a Contrabass, Wind players doubling upwards or downwards as the Contrabassoon, which works very well here. Dillon knows how to work magical charms, his music is deeply evocative and image building. His 'La femme invisible' (1989) after Salvador Dali has a bit of a comedic sense. Freely tossed trills, and tremoli and anxiety-ridden linear materials. Dillon summons the French occult philosopher Nicolas Flamel for some conceptual impetus, that of "rivers" flowing, emanating, rushing, spiraling, timbral landscapes disappearing as quickly as they assert themselves.Again Dillon favors a deeply classical instrumentation with double winds, three percussion and piano.
