When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. Cohan was negotiating a film based on his colorful life story, his first choice was Metro--until a falling out with studio chief Louis B. Mayer. But L.B.'s loss eventually became Warner Brothers'--and film history's--gain when the Burbank studio's Cohan musical became a massive, patriotic hit in the opening months of World War II. As chronicled in this vibrantly restored, first-ever complete soundtrack for the film, it was a compelling twist of fate. James Cagney turns in one of the screen's most ostensibly unlikely--and ultimately indelible--musical performances (netting him his only Best Actor Oscar
®), teaming with studio music director Roy Heindorf to update Cohan's once-quaint turn-of the-century patriotic ditties ("You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There," "Yankee Doodle Boy") and infectious vaudevillian chestnuts ("Give My Regards to Broadway," "Harrigan") with bracing dollops of the studio's '40s orchestral sass--and, just months after Pearl Harbor, some crucial historical parallels. Also included are four bonus tracks that remarkably survived the film's preproduction, including an outtake of "You Remind Me of My Mother" and voice-and-piano-only rehearsal versions of "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" that further underscore Cagney's deceptively effortless ability to sell a song despite his limited musical gifts. It's a long overdue showcase for a true American film musical gem. --Jerry McCulley

Yankee Doodle Dandy Review.......2006-11-03
It's an old movie with an old soundtrack, but I loved the movie, I love the music, and I'm very happy with my purchase.
Yankee Doodle Dandy.......2006-06-30
Excellent in black and white and color. James Cagney also got a medal from a President. (President Reagan!} If you like entertainment...this is it!
Amazing! Wonderful! Just buy it - you won't be sorry!.......2005-03-05
I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.
Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!
If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)
Wonderful, wonderful stuff!
What a find!!.......2003-06-15
I haven't been able to see this movie on TV since Turner bought it (don't get TCM), but if you've seen the movie several tims, as I have, listening to this CD is very nearly as good as watching it all the way through. (I'm so delighted with it that I'm even willing to forgive TCM for putting a paper ad inside with the disc.)
Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.
The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.
One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).
The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".
If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!
A Soundtrack Every American Should Own.......2002-09-23
Finally! If you own that Hollywood Soundstage abomination of the "Yankee Doodle Dandy" soundtrack you can finally pitch it. Here is the real article. Rhino (Turner Classic Movies Music) lovingly restored the music from the beloved "Yankee Doodle Dandy" motion picture starring James Cagney. This soundtrack sounds astonishing considering it's 60 years old. It's very obvious some loving care was taken in it's production for which we all should be greatful. The liner notes also are great with informative text and wonderful photos from the movie. The marvelous George M. Cohan songs gives one goosebumps and bring tears to the eyes. We all need this type of patriotic pep rally, especially in these tough times. As I've said, this soundtrack belongs in every American's home just as much as that "Grand Old Flag"! I believe there are plans to release the movie on DVD, hopefully soon.

One of the Clearest voices in jazz.......2007-05-14
Dr. Nina Symone has one of the clearest voices in Jazz. Couple that with her skills as a pianist and you have a treat for the ears. I highly reccomend this CD.
"Undisbuted Essential Nina Simone Disc" --Believe the Hype.......2007-04-30
I first heard this album in the late 1950's. My brother-in-law loaned it to me and I liked it so much he let me have it. I was struck by the title song, Little Girl Blue, the innovation on the piano is astounding, the way she intertwines Good King Winceslas with the main melody, but then there's her extraordinary voice. Everyone I played it for couldn't believe it. I took it to college, expecting to hear more and more about her, but never did. I forgot about it until one day I was listening to a Thistle and Shamrock on Public Radio showcase a classic pipe player who mentioned that this song by Nina Simone that she heard on one of her parents albums had a great influence on her. I started hunting for it again, I bought a half dozen of her CDs, but never found the clean versions of the songs on this disc. Evidently it made it to the surface again following her death. This collection really is definitive. There's a flow to this album. It's a classic, like Charlie Byrd and Stan Getz on Jazz Samba.
Little Girl Not So Blue.......2007-03-24
Everyone knows that Nina's first album is 5-star and then some, being one of the finest debuts ever recorded (IMHO). Piano trio with a gospel twist, it features two of her biggest hits, My Baby Just Cares For Me and I Loves You Porgy, as well as other gems like Plain Gold Ring, Mood Indigo, and the gorgeous, melancholy title track (for me, her finest moment) that so remarkably interpolates Good King Wenceslas. The Fuel remastering is crisp (if indistinguishable from the 2003 Metro reissue) and includes the long version of My Baby Just Cares For Me as a bonus track. The sequence may disappoint some, as it's not the better-known playing order that puts My Baby... at the start and Little Girl Blue at the end. Instead, Fuel went back and shifted tracks around to recreate the album's original release as Jazz Played In An Exclusive Side Street Club, with the tracks from Nina Simone and Her Friends added at the end, including her amazing rendition of He's Got The Whole World In His Hands. It's still a great listening experience, if less familiar that way. Cool artwork, too, with Joseph Muranyi's original LP liner notes, a brief new essay, and both versions of the cover art (same photo, different title and layout). These songs have been reissued in so many formats, some rather shoddy, that people have a right to wary about how they buy them now. Happily, the Fuel disc gives you the goods.

Mrs Henderson Presents.......2007-05-16
A very enjoyable and at times funny movie. Judi Dench gives one of her best perfomances with excellent support from the other cast members. This is a movie one could watch several times and never tire of it. AAA+++
Absolutely infectious!!!.......2007-03-28
From start to finish, MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS is the finest collection of solid standards and George Fenton's own recreated time-period evocations, fully fleshed and skillfully performed and recorded. The talents of singer Will Young will not go unnoticed, especially in his heartbreaking rendition of ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE.Your toes will be tapping, your lips will be smiling and you will be glad that this soundtrack and wonderful film are yours! You will be transported to WW2 England and you will be humming these tunes day and night.
A Creation and Recreation of Nostalgia.......2006-04-23
George Fenton has put together a musical score for the completely delightful MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS that is a combination of original music deeply influenced by the time of the film (London during WW II) and some of the best 'old favorite songs' from that time. In the film the music is always present, whether in the performances on the Windmill Theater stage or in the lyricism of the acting by Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins and crew.
Fenton includes such terrific oldies as Johnny Mercer's 'Goody Goody', Charles Harris' 'After the Ball', Noel Gay's 'Letting in the Sunshine', Frank Loesser's 'Blue Nightfall', and Jerome Kern's 'All the things you are'. He segues these pieces with his own fine orchestrations and the result is a score that not only enhances the mood of the film, but one that stands alone as a recording. The various performers include Camille O'Sullivan, Charlene Ford, Ciaran Connolly, Elise Audeyev, Frances Garvey, Frank Lawson, Joseph McMurray, Kate Power, Matthew Hart, Melody Squire, Rachel Lawrence, Sir Thomas Allen!, Sophie Brown, The O'Brien Sisters, Vanessa Barmby, Vicki Davids, and Victoria Hay.
This is a recording to conjure up memories not only of a successful film but also of a time when music conveyed a lot of emotion during times of stress. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 06
Mrs. Henderson Presents.......2006-03-24
Met ALL my expectations, having seen/loved the film - especially the orchestration, arrangements, and vocals. Sound quality superb.
I've played this CD for others - of all age groups - all agree it's a defininte winner.
Upbeat and Fun!.......2006-03-22
Love this CD for the nostalgia! My favorite track is "All the Things You Are" by J.Kern and O.Hammerstein. This year's Oscar telecast produced a montage of film clips to this track including the last scene from "Mrs. Henderson Presents" and it was so emotion granting as is the song. Many of the other songs are from a time period right before WWII, but they are just fun and upbeat -- it was the depression, people needed to be uplifted with such such songs as "Letting in the Sunshine" and "Goody Goody." Judi Dench was asked by someone in the bleachers at the Oscars how it felt to be nominated this year for Mrs. Henderson, and she answered back, "just listen to the soundtrack darling!" How great is that???!!!!

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Perfect Release of a two-fer.......2004-11-20
The person who wrote the review below is wrong : the "Alone" album was recorded and released in mono sound, in 1957. "Judy in Love" was Garland's first album recorded and released in stereo, in 1958.
The sound on this disc is spectacular. The original session tapes were used, for the best sound possible. It is glorious sound here, folks.
Pehaps the person that wrote the review below is thinking of the previous two-fer of "Judy in Love" from England, a few years back, paired with the "Judy" album. That CD sounded very flat and dry.
Get this new and improved disc, and you'll love it.
Finally "Alone" on CD!.......2003-10-01
I just received this Judy "double bill" and I can only say it's GREAT!! "Alone" was always one of my favorite Judy albums, and I am more than pleased to have it on CD now. The sound is not stereo, as another reviewer point out, but it never was recorded in stereo. I have the old vinyl, and that's mono too, but also pretty worn, after all these years. The liner notes actually are pretty good too. The original covers are reproduced, with the original liner notes reprinted, AND some fresh liner notes about this re-issue. There, you can read that the "alone" recordings are from 1957, and that "Judy in Love" is from 1958, and was her first stereo album for Capitol.
So why is "alone" my favorite Judy album? Maybe simply because it was one of my first encounters with Judy, when I was 17 years old. I didn't realize at the time that the selection of songs is pretty unusual. It's not the repertoire she sang a lot in her live and TV shows. I love the mostly subdued pathos on this album, although she does belt it out occasionally, in her own inimitable way. The songs are about 'surviving on your own', and some times about finding your inner strength, in a bittersweet way. The album is not very cheerful, but it does make me feel good, in a sentimental way. The arrangements are very good, just right, in the 'proper' fifties style. The strings have a very warm quality, which wasn't always the case in those days. There is also a beautiful large choir singing in the background on some tracks.
Some of the songs are very unknown, which makes this album special too. Happy New Year, for instance, is a beautiful torch song, written over a very slow version of Old Lang Syne in minor key; a real gem of a song! Blue Prelude is also a great song, so don't be discouraged by the titles you may not know.
All in all, a 'must have' for any Judy fan, but also a wonderful introduction if you want to get acquainted with Judy's singing. "Judy in Love" is an excellent example of her warm joyful singing, while "Alone" gives you all those wonderful torch songs. A balanced package, with a passionate Judy in great voice!!
Terrible sound and terrible packaging.......2003-06-27
Let me rant. This CD has 2 albums on it. 1 is mono and the other stereo!? I have these albums on records and they are both stereo. I feel ripped off. Also, these albums do not sound anywhere like the records in quality. In fact, they sound very boring and lacking of any sort of life. Judy did very big, exciting production numbers and the sound on this CD makes them sound stale and dead. I returned this CD and demanded my money back. The store clerk said I wasn't the only one. Thumbs way down.
JUDY AT HER BEST with SPECTACULAR SOUND!.......2002-05-11
JUDY IN LOVE is perhaps Garland's greatest studio album. A superb collaboration with Judy in wonderful voice, and arranger Nelson Riddle at the top of his form. Inexplicably, this album is only now making its CD debut in the U.S. Capitol Records seemingly had no interest in releasing it themselves, so they've sublicensed it to S&P Records, who have done a terrific mixing and remastering job. Comparing the sound to a recent UK import is overwhelmingly impressive. The UK release sounds mediocre, and this new issue belies its having been recorded 44 years ago.
JUDY IN LOVE is paired with her monaural ballad album ALONE, which was arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins. The two albums together are a distinct contrast and yet only show the versatility and mastery of Garland. The highlight of the ALONE tracks is Jenkins' schmaltzy, yet irresistable I'VE GOT A RIGHT TO SING THE BLUES. ALONE was previously issued on CD by Capitol years ago, but has been long out of print, so this collection is a dream come true for Garland fans.
The 5 Star rating is for the recordings and the way they've been beautifully produced. It does not, however, represent a true rating for the package itself, which has been saddled with awful,
amateurish liner notes which are so poorly written that it's a blatant insult to Garland. What a shame the producers who took such care in creating such a great sounding album, didn't bring the same kind of excellence to the accompanying package. This should not detract anyone from buying this CD, but buyers looking for an interesting commentary on the legendary lady and these specific tracks will have to go elsewhere.
Garland the Great.......2002-05-02
A beautiful compilation of two classic, original "Judy" albums. These are two of the six studio albums she recorded for Capitol in the fifties, and these are probably the best. While Judy's vocal tone is not at its best on "Judy in Love", the song selections and her interprative genius make up for the slight vocal imperfections. "More Than You Know", "I Am Loved" and "By Myself" are absolute delights, and are clearly definitive versions of these songs. In addition, the ballads shine with passion and tenderness. "Alone" is mostly filled with similarly tender songs, and on this one Garland is in fine, full voice throughout. "Little Girl Blue" is a particular standout, and the addition of the never before released "Then You've Never Been Blue" is a special treat for fans and newcomers. Popular singing doesn't come any better than this.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, Swinging, Original.......2006-01-22
I don't think anyone in jazz has ever come close to Nina Simone's achievements as an instrumentalist/vocalist.
I agree with the other reviewer who disliked the way the original order of the songs was changed for this re-release, but that is a minor point. LITTLE GIRL BLUE is one of the most amazing albums I have ever heard. Part of what made the original song order so great was how Nina Simone grabs the listener's attention with a fast, swinging version of "Mood Indigo," which is almost always played at a slow tempo. She makes it sound is if it could never be played any other way. Later in the set, she dazzles once again with a very slow, soulful, funky rendition of "Good Bait." Everyone else plays this tune at an upbeat tempo, but Nina Simone brilliantly reconceptualizes the whole song and makes it sound perfect. Later, she shows us that she can also do the standards in the standard way as well as anyone with a conventional--but still great--version of "I Loves you Porgy." In addition to having one of the finest imaginations in jazz, she was a vocalist of the highest calibre. Her versions of "Little Girl Blue" and "My Baby Just Cares for Me" are particularly outstanding performances in an album full of superlatives. Demonstrating impeccable taste, she chooses to do an instrumental rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone," rather than sing the familiar (and somewhat hokey) lyrics. The result is one of the finest emotional buildups from a subdued beginning to an intense close ever recorded by a jazz musician.
For great vocals, brilliant improvisations, and very creative renditions of several standards, this ranks in my book as one of the all-time great jazz albums.
Nina's first two releases, 1957 and 59! Plus live stuff!.......2005-02-11
If you're checking this out- Good! You've got taste, obviously, or you wouldn't be here. Pick Up a used copy of this little sweetheart- you won't be let down!
For me, the original record, "Jazz As Played In An Exclusive Side Street Club" (US, 1958, BETHLEHEM BCP 6028), was one of those vinyl finds that diggers hope for but RARELY ever get. After a couple hours of grimy fingered flipping through some stacks of old Gospel records in this rundown flea-market in Hinton, WV- I unearthed the title above. Old as hell and grimy, some rain damage- but still... made my week!
That record consisted of the following tracks: "Mood Indigo," "Don't Smoke In Bed," "He Needs Me," "Little Girl Blue," "Love Me Or Leave Me," "My Baby Just Cares For Me," Good Bait" (a nice long tempestuous instrumental), "Plain Gold Ring," "You'll Never Walk Alone" (another great instrumental), "I Loves You Porgy," and "Central Park Blues" (a nice pensive instrumental). The versions of I loves you Porgy was the tune that got her signed. Little Girl Blue gets her standard 'Good King Wenceslaws' treatment- that fusion blew me away the first time I heard it! He Needs Me is a sweet sad, poignant short little tune!
Soooooooo... this CD is the Import version of that first album by Nina, plus the second (which was "Nina Simone And Her Friends" (US, 1959, BETHLEHEM BCP 6041: only four tracks: "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands," "I Loves You Porgy" (reprise from the previous album), "For All We Know," and another instrumental- "African Mailman.")). The sound is cleaned up a little. No remastering but the sound was pretty good to begin with. Whoever NEON is- they added four pretty rollicking live tracks at the end to flesh this out. The live tracks are B+, A- quality. I'm not sure where they come from- what show...
I love the style of Nina's piano playing and her original takes on arrangements. That's another reason to get this- her piano playing isn't hampered/over encumbered by a loud band.... Her classical training is showcased all over this! Nina was an imaginative player and this is perhaps the best demonstration of her incredible talent as a pianist (she trained at Juilliard in the 50's to be a classical pianist, if ya didn't know), she rises to the occasion and takes the weight, deftly. This is before she had legions of backup players aiding her- Sometimes it's just a young Nina, her piano and a drum or bass. Excellent! The stripped down atmosphere really suited her!
My only beef with this is that whoever put it out (Neon?) messed with the original track listing. They mixed songs from the two releases together- not that you'd know if you'd never have heard the original. The vinyl was well put together in terms of how the tracks flowed into each other. Here: there's no real continuity, thematically or stylewise. But once you get this you can play with it to your heart's content- on your PC, IPOD or whathaveyou...
Honestly- you can't go wrong with this CD and you definitely can't go wrong with Nina, may her soul rest in peace.

Strange interpretation of "classical".......2005-01-17
I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.
I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.
An interesting mix..........2002-05-18
This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.
While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...
A touch of history...........2002-01-28
An exceptional set. The history of music making of the 20th century in 4 CDs. Even from the first track with Giuseppe Campanari and Charles Adams Prince you can see that people put much time in collecting the best interpretations and putting together an amazing collection. Other highlights include the "Mack The Knife" with Lotte Lenya, the Bachiana Brasileiras, The Fanfare For The Common Man with LSO conducted by the composer and so many more. An undespiuted *****

The Real Thing.......2005-05-01
Joni James' voice had a crystal clear quality with a girl-next-door warmth that came across like a hello from a friendly voice. With modern singers like Alison Moyet, Linda Ronstadt, Maria Muldaur & Cyndi Lauper all looking back to this era, it is also nice to return to the real thing. "Little Girl Blue" was recorded in 1955 and boasts some delightful tracks. "These Foolish Things" is warm & playful, "A cigarette that bears those lipstick traces, an airline ticket to romantic places, and still my heart has wings, these foolish things remind me of you." "Autumn Leaves" has such a gorgeous string arrangement and is a classic dramatic melody that builds gloriously, "I see your lips, those summer kisses, the sunburned hands I used to know." The liner notes relate that while this is an often-covered standard, at the time when Joni chose to record it, it was little known. "When You Wish Upon A Star" is a lovely melody; and Joni's dreamy take almost makes me forget the Disney association of this song. The bonus tracks stylistically depart from the original tracks. "He Cried On My Shoulder" has some pop sounds that remind me of Pat Boone-era pop. "Little Girl Blue" is an excellent set from this classic singer, Giovanna Carmella Babbo as she was born in 1930. If there is any complaint about the package, the songwriters are not included in the booklet. Enjoy!
LITTLE GIRL BLUE.......2001-05-17
The song selection is very much in tune with the blueness felt by the singer. Joni is terrific in any type of song that she attempts.
Great 50s Vintage Joni.......2000-10-20
This cd is one of Joni's best. While some other singers may rely on the orchestration to convey the torch song mood, Joni has it all in her voice. It contains an excellent choice of songs from"In Love In Vain" to the Joni hit"Where Is That Someone For Me?".And Joni sings them with her exclusive poignant style that made her so popular in the early 50s.The arrangements by David Terry are a compliment to Ms. James and are truly 50s popular vintage music. These are the same type of orchestrations that were used on many on Joni's hits and it's great to hear them today. A fine cd from the best popular song stylist of the 50s.
Oh please!.......2000-03-19
This CD package rates a zero for its self-glorifying liner notes! The writer would have us believe Joni James to be Ella Fitzgerald! Yes, Joni James had a pleasant and enjoyable voice, but to claim this to be one of the greatest torch albums of all times is absolutely ludicrous! I would dare the writer to listen to Carmen McRae or Ella Fitzgerald before ever making that judgment. The music and arranments rate about a three. James doesn't always hit the mark as an interpretive singer. Sometimes one wonders what she's thinking about when she sings as she doesn't understand the subtlety of a lyric at times with this "torch" album. The best example is the bland, bland rendition of "Little Girl Blue". How this became a signature song is beyond me. Joni also suffers from what the liner note wrier deems "shimmering" arrangements. Sleep inducing is more like it. David Terry's arrangements are uninspired and tepid at most. Beyond all of this, the album is at least a listenable, if not entirely engaging effort. I've personally enjoyed her later, jazz-infused work ten times more.
This CD includes some of Joni James' finest performances.......2000-02-20
Joni James' performances of "I'm Through With Love," "These Foolish Things," "It's the Talk of the Town," and "In Love in Vain" rank with her finest recordings, or with any other recordings of these songs. With her intimate vocal style, Ms. James is able to convey the feeling that she is in the same room with the listener, a rare quality for a singer. It is true that a few of the arrangements for different songs are similar, but they are in excellent taste and very atmospheric. The only reason that I do not rate this CD five stars is that some of the bonus tracks are not quite up to those on the original album.
