From Jazziz
Cheryl Gallagher continues to distinguish herself as one of the few harpists working in smooth jazz with her CD Kinetic. Featuring a variety of contemporary sounds - from the hard-edged and dynamic to the soft and romantic - the CD finds Gallagher mixing it up with saxophonist, flutist, and keyboardist John Mills, guitarist Thom Rotella, bassists Spencer Starnes and Vail Johnson, percussionist James Fenner, and drummer Eddie Cantu.

Of all the genres within electronic music, trance probably gets the worst rap. The music is guilty by association with the hippies that worship it with a religious-like fervor. And if executed poorly, its dramatic crescendos sound like pretentious, pompous pap. But a good trance DJ can save a string of the genre's records from falling down the drain of all-too-common gargantuan breakdowns and endless wind-ups. Paul Oakenfold might be the DJ to rescue trance from itself; Tranceport features a veritable who's who of trance records and producers--Sasha's remix of Gus Gus's "Purple," a few tracks from seminal trance producer Paul van Dyk, and the driving, impenetrable "Enervate" by Transa. Oakenfold's mixing is impeccably suited to trance: long, drawn-out bleeds of sound seep from one transcendent track to the next. --Tricia Romano

Electronica Genres 101.......2007-06-27
Still confused about what is considered trance versus house versus techno music? What about the difference between trance and progressive trance? Have a listen to the suitably named album, Tranceport. Unaltered trance in its purest form mixed by (argueably) the genre's most infamous DJ, Paul Oakenfold.
Not a favorite genre of mine, but beloved by many others. I don't mind trance that is mixed into an eclectic set or presented with a little more contrast that what is offered on this album. The first volume of Northern Exposure by Sasha & John Digweed (released the same year) is the kind of dreamy trance that I enjoy. The trance tracks featured on Transport are very old sounding. A steady organ-tone throughout, cresendo drum rolls and a very cheesy narrative track about being spiritually connected with Earth ("Gamemaster" by Lost Tribe) to top it all off.
A timeless classic for some. Electronica's equivalent to Rock's 1980's for me.
2/5 stars.
Oakie's best.......2007-06-22
God, I'd do anything to hear this mix for the first time again. This was the album that started it all for me as far as dance music goes. I've always loved the opening and closing tracks, they're so awesome. Very good track selection throughout though. "A voyage into trance" is another very good p. o. mix. I like it's darker, edgier tone alot. I've become more of a Sasha fan and I hate Oakenfold's new stuff, but "tranceport" always be special.
Oakenfold at his BEST.......2007-06-11
First of all, not only would I say that this is one of the best trance mixes ever, but in my view, one of the best collections of music period.
This is Oakenfold at his best. A far cry from what he has become, but nonetheless, an unbelievable mix.
His mixing and track selection are FLAWLESS and the overall tone of the mix is soothing, pounding, and uplifting all at once.
A MUST own for any fan of dance music. Highly recommended.
Trance masterpiece.......2007-05-24
There's nothing else I can add that's already been said in these reviews. This is a life changing mix if you're listening to it for the first time. If you're at all a trance music fan, this mix must be in your collection. There's no excuse for not having it.
Still Amazing.......2007-04-02
I cannot believe that it was almost 10 years ago that this album came out and it still holds up as the cornerstone of trance music. Say what you like about Oakenfold as a DJ, but the man knows how to put together an incredible set of music. Any fan of techno, electronic, or trance music needs to have this album in their collection. Each song could be a pinnacle song on another set, but all together they form one of the greatest sets known to modern music.

a classic!.......2006-04-19
YESSS this is a classic , i have been caching up with some CDs i think are great so this means that some of the music that i am reviewing is "old", said this , let me tell you that this album haven't got old at all .
Yes there are some new albums that sound more avant gard but first than nothing this is not a DJ album , BT made and played all the music by himself so this means that the DJs play his music in their sets and if you listen to one of the many "modern" sets that a lot of DJs are playing right now you will not notice BIG difference between IMA and what is going on now .
In my humble opinion this guy is the father of what we call now progressive eather house or trance , so if you have an open mind to listen this album without thinking that it is going to sound old go for it!!!!!! this is a master piece .
My only negative coment is that his latest works haven not been as good as the old ones.
Best of BT.......2005-10-07
I wish BT could pull off something like this again. I'll keep this review short. It is a quality cd, good for rainy days especially.
**Oops... This is supposed to be a 5 star rating.**
The start of something big.......2004-03-20
This was the first album from BT, it's almost as good as his second. Most of the songs are dream dance and very pleasant. Sure he developed and made an even better work the next time but this album made a way for many other out there, just like Robert Miles did, BT also made a wonderful work here. Meliodic and deep songs, very diffrent from previous trance music released. "Noctural transmission" "Quark" "Embrace the future" and "Deeper Sunshine" are my favorites. The very long song "Sasha's voyage" is a masterpiece but check the song with Tori Amos "Blue skies" too, not one of my favorites but interesting. This was perhaps a little bit incomplete and could have been and sount even better but you'll know what was coming. If you like this kind of music, then yiu'll love this.
Beautiful album!.......2004-01-06
If I had to vote for best electronica album ever, I might give Ima the nod. Combining lilting melodies with righteous grooves, Ima warms your heart, while forcing you to shake your booty. The way it builds and fades is incredible in a subtle way, unlike the often overbearing transitions in so much trance music. The first disc isn't even mixed, yet the music flows perfectly.
Despite the disappointment in his latest album, you really got to give BT props for giving us this masterpiece.
yup.......2003-10-27
just had to give BT some props for a really good cd after bashing his new cd pretty bad. This is a classic in the eletronic music world and much better then any of BT's new stuff I've heard. mmfcl

Genius?.......2007-06-26
This guy is so out there you almost start to think "This music is just noise" or "He is a genius light years ahead of others". I lean towards the second statement but sometimes his music is a little hard to "get". This music is not for putting on for a casual listen, background party music. This music is a journey, something that demands your attention. I think to commit yourself to it, one would "get it" on a whole different level.
Sadly dated.......2007-04-12
This CD is sadly dated. It sounds about as cheesy to me now (2007, a decade from when the CD came out) as cheap pop music from 1987 sounded in 1997. There is older electronica out there which has not dated nearly as much- say, Sasha & Digweed's "Northern Exposure" (1996), which has a somewhat similar feel, or The Orb's "Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld" (1994), though that may be too experimental for some.
I could see this being an OK intro to electronica for somebody who has listened to very little of it. If you have some electronica listening under your belt, stay away from this- it's a waste of your time and money.
Brilliant and beautiful........2007-01-22
This is my first BT album, and it certainly won't be my last. Although I don't really know a whole lot about electronic music (other than that I need to own a lot more of it), and I can't really explain to you what the hell "trance" music is, I do know that this is a really great album. BT, that is, Brian Transeau, is a master composer, who brings together so many different sounds and textures, into an album that is huge, epic, and awe-inspiringly beautiful.
The album begins with "Firewater", which is bookended by a cool spoken-word intro, and a nicely done vocal bit, sung by BT himself, over soothing acoustics (he actually kind of reminds me of former Spock's Beard frontman Neal Morse, as a singer). "Orbitus Teranium", "Flaming June", and the massive "Content" are beautiful instrumentals, with spell-binding synths and piano to adorn the infectious drum beats. The vocal tracks are pretty varied. "Remember" and "Lullaby for Gaia", which feature the lovely Jan Johnston, both have a nice pop element to them, although "Remember" is still very epic as well as catchy (killer string arrangements in there as well). "Memories in a Sea of Forgetfulness" has some kind of tribal chanting, adding a bit of a world music element to the album, "Solar Plexus" is a bit more hard rock, with more aggressive vocals and some semi-heavy guitar (reminds me a bit of Nine Inch Nails, although not quite that abrasive). "Love Peace, and Grease" has some altered robot-like vocals, and a little bit of rapping. This one has kind of a Chemical Brothers/Crystal Method kind of feel, very "rave-like", mixed with a bit of oldschool hip hop. The album ends, following "Content", with a short but sweet reprise of "Flaming June". Even at 70 minutes, it leaves you wanting more.
So as you can see, this is an extremely eclectic and enthralling album. Although it is a bit intense in places, it's mostly very tranquil and laid-back, perfect for chilling out to. I especially recommend putting it in around sunset. It evokes that feeling of the coming night perfectly (they didn't put that on the cover by accident). Whether you're a fan of electronic music or not, this is highly recommended. BT is a truly brilliant artist. Can't wait to hear "This Binary Universe". Hell, I want them all!
What a feeling.........2004-10-30
Ever since BT introduced Ima, electronic music changed forever. For all the years I have owned this album, it never fails to remain as rejuvinating and emotive as the first time it pierced my soul. Completely ignorant to genres, this statement of creativity connects globaly through music. It is a piece of music that was just meant to be, it exists because it should. Seven years have past and not a single sound on this recording goes unappreciated.
Even a pure trancehead can enjoy this!.......2004-09-28
I've always seen BT tracks on disks from other, more "pure" trance artists and I've found them really catchy. However, I got his "Movement in Still Life" and didn't like how much crossing of genres there was (even in the UK release... I really didn't like "Mic Check"). This disk does have a little bit of genre mixing, but it's much more flowing and trance like than MiSL. Anyways, this disk is pretty energetic and definately dancable!
Well for those of you like me who don't really like artists like BT, I think you might be surprised by this one.
Overall probably 4 1/2 stars for me... Sometimes it's a little too... BT for my taste. It's hard to describe. I guess you might call it vapid. I think it lacks the depth that some of the more subtle trance artists have.

South's 2003 album showcases the band's evolution as musicians and songwriters and introduces a more mature sound. Produced by Dave Eriga (Idlewild, Ash, Manic Street Preachers). Kinetic.
Customer Reviews:
Solid Album, Solid Group, Worth a Listen!.......2007-01-12
'South' is one of those artists that you are either going to like, or dislike. I would not liken it to the extent that 'Boards of Canada' can segregate music listeners, but there are definitely some bits of their music that may make you shy away.
'With The Tides' starts out with a bit of a slow touch and moves onto Tracks 03 and 04, which are quite strong. The albums flows well and is a very enjoyable listen for many occasions. 'Silver Sun' is also a strong track which brings a bit of a 'Beetles' feel to it.
I highly recommend this album for those that like ambient music and indie (hard to use this word with them) with a bit of a post-rock feel.
Favorite Tracks: Track 03, Track 04, Track 06, Track 09
(four and a half stars) Listen and appreciate.......2006-12-27
It's quite difficult to classify South -- perhaps similar in some ways to the shoegazer genre of Ride and Catherine Wheel, or maybe more like the Britpop of the Stone Roses and Charlatans UK. No matter who they're compared to however, one thing's for certain, South is a terrific band, and, to this reviewer, "With the Tides" is even better than their debut "From Here On In," which was very good indeed. Complex textured instrumentation with soaring vocals and choruses -- almost every song on "Tides" is a winner.
The first three songs set the stage for everything that follows and provides the listener with the range of the band. "Colours in Waves," might be my second favorite South song -- just behind "Paint the Silence" from "Here On In." "Natural Disasters," has an almost Beatlesque feel (think a more pop version of "Strawberry Fields Forever"). Like the Beatles, South isn't afraid to experiment with sound not normally associated with a rock and roll. Check out the harp in "Nine Lives," or the harpsichord in "Loosen Your Hold." "Same Old Story" could have been South's break-out song, as it's perhaps more "hit" oriented than the others, but the the essence of the band isn't compromised at all.
Songs 8 through 11 take the listener down gently with a more mellow approach, but the closer, "Threadbare," has a harder edge, almost reminiscent of Radiohead, as if South's telling us not to get too comfortable.
"With the Tides" has no weak songs and is quite incredible in its consistency. I would have awarded the album five stars if "Paint the Silence" was included on it rather than the prior album; but, even without this song, it just misses the top rating in my opinion.
Magnificent from start to finish!.......2006-10-11
I was awe-struck the first time I heard this album. This was my introduction to South, and I was blown away. If you are new to this one, this is a great starting point. The whole disc is a masterpiece.
The best way to listen to this album is on a cool, end of summer night's drive with the windows down, and the sound UP!
Have I mentioned this album is great?? It is! buy it!
Brilliant stuff!.......2006-05-09
I'd say With the Tides and Parachutes are my favourite records since OK Computer.
Isn't that enough?
Better than Coldplay, don't miss this record!.......2006-02-25
Heard about South 2 years ago, but didn't purchase this album until a few months ago. Was unimpressed with Coldplay's "X & Y" album, with its rather overpolished feel and sound, and the word across the internet was that South, who many compared to Coldplay, had a better album out. There's an understatement! Lyrically and instrumentally, I found South more expansive, creative and willing to take more chances with the melodies. Simply beautiful to listen to, this album is something I put on and play all the way through - a rarity for me. While the band members are still quite young - and it sometimes shows - the obvious talent they show in this album makes me not just a fan but really looking forward to see what they produce in the future.

A rising star amidst the Paul Oakenfold school of techno-trance out of London, Dave Ralph's sequel to Oakenfold's 1998 Tranceport mix takes a selection of the familiar and obscure, then shakes, stirs, and pours a serious groove cocktail. The first CD of the double set takes a more familiar path, charting a course through Sasha, Jam & Spoon, and Luke Slater and keying on a distinctly darker dance-floor vibe. Ralph stretches out these tracks, inserting short bursts of atmosphere and tension-building moments of ambience before breaking out the drum loops. The second CD is more direct while making use of a wider and wilder palette, throwing house-flavored beats around like streaks of finger paint in a classroom full of kindergartners. Make no mistake, however, about Ralph's intent. While creating an irresistibly danceable template, the relentless patterns and hypnotic rhythms of both CDs work to create, as the best trance does, a deeper vibe that only reveals itself with time and/or high-quality headphones. The breaks that Ralph engineers are always ideal lulls, allowing the listener's feet to not so much rest as levitate. These little fragments, as found in the second CD's "Toca Me" (by Fragma) or the first CD's Jam & Spoon track, "Stella," give pause and texture to an awfully impressive mix. Definitely a welcome record for those with an affinity for tireless dance-floor drama. --Matthew Cooke
Customer Reviews:
My Reason.......2005-05-27
This CD was the reason I started listening to electronica and even today it is still one of the best out there. I bought this on a whim back in high school, basically b/c it was on sale and the store was going out of business. I had heard electronica or 'techno' music before but never really thought much of it. That all changed once I heard this CD and I knew I could never hear electronica the same way again. This CD is everything a good CD should be, beautiful and epic, moving and hard-hitting (and each of these comes in there appropriate place). The mixing is spot-on except for a few tracks but the tracks themselves are all amazing. The first disc starts off with Rabbitweed and in my opinion peaks with Arms of Orion (though it never falls frrom this peak, it just stays [like your head] dreamily in the clouds]. I lost the second disc so I have forgotten much of what it sounds like but I can remember alternating the discs and not being able to find a favorite. A must for any fan of the genre.
One to grow on.......2005-05-10
Great follow up to Oakie's Tranceport by European dj,Dave Ralph. This cd takes awhile but it eventually will grow on you. This is very dark/progressive trance that's not for beginners.Cd 1 is kinda lame, sounding more like house than trance in my opinion,so I choose to avoid it.I must give 5 stars to the 2nd one, because it's what I call "otherworldly trance"If your really a dance/trance fan and I mean, really ...go get this one.
good but not great........2004-05-05
this is the second installment of the famed transport series that was started by the infamous Paul Oakenfold. As sequels go, some are good and some aren't. There will NEVER be another tranceport like Oakey's, however, this is a good mix. I wasn't sure, since it was so old and I've heard most of the songs well, whether to give it 3 or 4 stars. As a follow up it is good. The format is extended to two discs and Oakenfold's influence is a big part of this compilation. This disc significantly differs from his later offerings (e.g. naturalized). Dave Ralph has moved into the world of minimalist trance that started with Digweed's Los Angeles release, which imho is still the best. As for this selection, if you like the older trance and a good dose of euphoria, then I would get it. If you want the latest music look elsewhere as you may feel this selection is dated with played out tunes. I give it 4 stars because I like uplifting music and having recently listened to renaissance one with Sasha and Digweed I feel that though this comp. does not approach the greatness of that set, it does give me a better feel for how the music was mixed and hence the 4 stars. please rock the vote and happy listening :)
A welcome addition to the Dave Ralph saga.......2004-03-08
Though not quite as deep and eerie as the smash "Resident Alien" disc, this two disc set is true to Dave Ralph's sleek and subtle style. Again, the tracks are often excessively long, but this is (in my opinion) necessary to achieve Dave's sort of twisted dream-world vision. Unlike "Resident Alien," there are a few memorable trance tunes that stick out in the mix due to more traditionally prominent melodies and vocal pieces. Sparkling and haunting, crystal clear sounds with a hard-hitting drive to keep it moving along. More dark and minimalist compared to "Naturalized," but slightly more melodic and mainstream than "Resident Alien." Another winner from this man of somewhat unusual taste.
incredible journey.......2003-04-06
great cd to escape from your own head. definately cant help but to close your eyes and move to this one.

Dance culture, and the rave scene in particular, has been a potentially ripe film topic for years, so when Groove was released to heavy buzz at the Sundance film festival, Sony Pictures immediately saw a possible summer sleeper. With John Digweed making a cameo appearance, as well as a savvy mixture of featured music throughout the movie, Groove's soundtrack will do nothing but contribute to the film's success. West Coast dance fixture Wish FM, a.k.a. Wade Hampton, serves as the film's music supervisor, and he comes up with a compelling mix that nicely parallels the momentum of the movie's broiling dance-floor sequences. Starting off with some light house, then darkening his touch into deeper, more trancing territory, Wish reaches a zenith with Digweed's "Heaven Scent," using its soaring keyboard refrain as a natural peak. There are peaks all over this record, though, as Orbital's "Halycon + On + On" and Scott Hardkiss's mix of Alter Ring's "Infinitely Gentle Blows," with its electrified vocal mishmash, provide ever-entrancing moments of turntable bliss. The movie's director, Greg Harrison, has said he intended the film to act "as an authentic document of a time in youth culture history"--his movie's soundtrack is definitely that. --Matthew Cooke

I thought the movie was actually pretty acurate, and this soundtrack does a good job too. It may be missing a few songs, but what's here is all worthy, and the continuous mix is a big plus. "Girls Like Us" is a catchy start, and I really like how "Halycon + On + On", "Anomaly (calling your name)", and "Heaven Scent" flow into each other, and the disc ends nicely as well. Overall this may not be the perfect selection, but if raves and trance/dance are your thing, then this should get you in the "Groove".
We need more.......2004-03-19
This CD is good but a lot of songs from the movie were left out. I read rumors of a second CD but that seems to have faded away...too bad. As another reviewer pointed out, an awesome track called Bluebottle by POB (which I found on the CD "Platipus Beginner's Guide") is missing. I didn't know the track's name before buying this disc and was disappointed that it wasn't here. I thought it was the best track in the movie. Overall, still a CD worth owning.
Curious.......2004-01-30
I really enjoyed the movie, I think it captured the spirit of a rave pretty well. I haven't bought the soundtrack yet for one simple reason. I've heard most of the songs on the sndtrk and I dont think it contains the song I'm looking for, which I dont know the name.
Its been awhile since I've seen the movie, but the song is playing as some of the characters go into the *chill room*. Its a real ambient song, slower beat, easier to chill to. If anyone knows the name of the song/artist, It'd be great to know.
I wasn't too happy with the rest of the tracks on the album as it left out alot of the mixes from the movie.
Not as good as the movie.......2002-03-16
But still a decent mix, incorporting a few of the notable track from the movie. Anyone know what song is playing when when DJ Snaz makes his successful fade?
Rave On!.......2001-09-07
For someone who actually 'attended' a few raves in 1990's San Francisco, I actually thought this movie was great!!!! And the accompanying soundtrack is killer too!

London-based trio South are envoys of that "new" ethic of guitar-stroking, comedown-friendly rock & roll ambience also practiced by the likes of Turin Brakes and Kings Of Convenience. For the most part, From Here On In makes like a celestial meeting of Nick Drake and the Stone Roses, with South's delicate finger-picked melodies launching out into the outer realms of the sprawling space-rock jam. However, as the first indie-rock band signed to James Lavelle's notoriously hip beats label Mo' Wax, South are a guitar band who do occasionally take in dramatic rolls of DJ Shadow-esque drums, fuzzy Money Mark-style keyboard washes, and moody orchestral strings torn straight from UNKLE's hymn sheet. "Everyone / Will come down in time" promises the harmonized chorus of "I Know What You're Like." Not yet, though; this fine album guarantees a 70-minute trip, so strap yourself in and experience the latest rebuff to the tired chants of "Rock is dead." --Louis Pattison

south to throwback city.......2007-03-21
Although I think they do have some similarities to Stone Roses, I think what people really dig about South is the "created world" aspect of this album. It really is its own universe and doesn't strive to be like any other music out there. I don't know how this music makes others feel, but for me, its a melancholy escape.
A terrific little known band.......2006-09-14
Almost two years ago, I was watching some shlocky B movie about college kids who ran up against the mob when they became bookies. Unexpectedly, at the very end of what was a pretty bad movie, I heard this incredible song -- which sort of sounded like it could have come from the Stone Roses, Charlatans, Oasis, or Ride, but distinctive from all of those great bands. Of course, the song turned out to be "Paint the Silence" and I immediately purchased South's "From Here on In." A few weeks later, I followed up by buying the even better "With the Tides."
While the moody and evocative "Paint the Silence" is clearly the dominant song on the album, other standouts include the soaring "Keep Close," the instrumental "All in for Nothing," "Sight of Me," and "By the Time You Catch Your Heart."
The three principles show tremendous diversity, but stay faithful to the basic britpop formula. Perhaps we didn't need three songs to be split in two -- the album certainly could have been tighter -- but South has done something very special here, by basically continuing into the 2000's the britpop Stone Roses-style genre of rock and roll almost single-handedly.
I also should mention that I disagree with the reviewers who find a weakness in Jamie McDonald's voice. I think he's the perfect front man for these songs, and on occasion, such as in "Coloured in Waves" (probably the band's best song along with "Paint the Silence") his voice really soars.
This band should be more popular!
French love them too.......2006-02-10
I'm French I discovered the cd during a trip in California last summer and I really loved them but it was impossible to find their cd in a store in the US and in France as well. So thank you Amazon to deliver in France!
Hope this group will be famous in France soon, like that maybe they'll do a concert in our country. But I'm sure they will, as Coldplay did few years ago.
south review.......2005-08-19
Overall a good album. The first half of it tends to sound like Oasis and the second half is similar to their first album.
From here on in, things are good.......2004-11-10
South may be the most underrated Brit-rock band in existance, with only the Doves contending as well for that title. Certainly they deserve more attention than they have received, with their mellow brand of Stone-Rosian rock and creative use of guitars and electronic sweeps. Their debut, "From Here On In," has a creative polish that most bands can just dream about on their first outing.
What they create is basically swirling pop melodies with a slightly darker undercurrent, and a backdrop of lush electronic beats. The downright beautiful "Paint the Silence" is a good example, with a solid guitar'n'percussion thing going, but behind it are those dreamy beats and waves.
Elsewhere they take a more acoustic sound, such as the slightly ominous "Keep Close" or the eerie "I Know What You're Like," with its banjo-ey guitar. Then it's to songs like "Broken Head II," one of three experimental numbers, an eerie instrumental where the the haunting sonic waves take precedence over the wham-bam percussion, no matter how loud the drums get.
South is still a young band, and they were still sort of feeling their way through in "From Here On In" -- at times the songs can be monotonous musically, although still very engaging. You can hear hints of bands like Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses -- especially the Stone Roses, who are an acknowledged influence, but the Stone Roses if they had been wrapped up with a heavy dose of synth from some expert DJs.
Musically, the guys from South seem to be capable of anything -- moody indie-rock, trippy atmospherics, emo moans, and any imaginable blend of the above. When you strip away the keyboards and loops, the solid guitars and heavy basslines are still lurking there. They have some pretty solid drumbeats, which are usually pretty snappy and flexible; the keyboards and guitars have the rare quality of getting all melted together, so that at times it's hard to tell what precisely is building up musically.
Joel Cadbury doesn't have a great voice -- it's a bit out-there, in that great way that some rockers have. He's not fighting the music for the front position; he sounds like he's just a part of it all. And he throws some intense emotion into the moody, melancholy music -- the lyrics are a bit above average, but the way they are delivered makes them sound very strong and atmospheric. ("I'm gonna be there when your soul comes down/I see you running on your own intentions...")
While South was still growing into its excellent sound in "From Here On In," their polish and exuberance show them to be a musical force to be reckoned with -- especially with the release of their outstanding sophomore album. Keep rockin', boys.

Enormously popular and apparently indefatigable, trance DJ duo Sasha and John Digweed's Communicate risks market saturation given the number of CDs they've already produced separately this year. Along with Digweed's involvement in a long list of projects, including his astonishing double discs Bedrock and Global Underground: Hong Kong, Sasha's name has become omnipresent on compilations and mix records all over the world thanks to his own GU contribution Ibiza and its ubiquitous club hit Xpander. Still, one feels only gratitude for Communicate, as these two globetrotting turntablists once again show off the unique stylistic differences that produce their trademark twists, dizzying turns, and wide-open flights of rhythmic intensity. Sasha is the straightforward one, putting a heavy hand to use on the turntable, maximizing bass lines and beats while keeping a sharp eye on the fader, forever attentive to the dance floor's whims. His gifted ear pits Killhurtz' "West on 27th" mix against Breeder's "Tyrantanic" with forceful execution, providing sublime closure on the first disc. Meanwhile, Digweed's world is more subtle, filled with shady crevices, slippery transitions, and subliminal melodic touches. The ghostly sample work on Digweed's haunting "Voices: Freelance Icebreakers Mix" from the second disc slices into the Orb's "Once More" with the delicacy of a surgeon. Pieces of songs ebb and flow throughout with unpredictable grace, provoking the sweaty, timeless, eyes-shut-tight club-going experiences that exist in many a hipster's fondest dreams. All in all, this might be the best example yet of Sasha and Digweed's incomparable appeal. --Matthew Cooke

A lukewarm cheese-grater which assigns the ears the role of cheese.......2006-12-27
I bought this album based purely on the collaborative duo who, together, have produced some of my all-time favorite records in this genre. What I got in return was something completely unexpected, for better or for worse.
Let's begin with the bad, because no one really WANTS to negatively critique an album produced by two artists whom they love, do they? This album, taken as a whole, is a mishmash of various industrial, grinding, wholly alienesque and synthetic noises. Now, what trance music DOES NOT fit this description, the prospective buyer might ask? Plenty, in this case. The variation of noise is wide, and this is a positive because it gives the album an interesting inconsistency, but this inconsistency leads to confusion when trying to "communicate" with the album's musical message.
Many of the tracks are, for the infamous duo, unusually repetative both in time signature, loops and song structure. The occasional 'clank', 'grind' or 'zap' is thrown in, and for good measure, but these attempts at sounding different lead the listener astray towards confusion and ultimately disinterest. Dont even get me started ranting on how Mainline's "Narcotic" left me with thoughts of sawing off my ears.
The positives ARE there, though. For the most part, the track selection is very diverse and intersting. Many of the artists are artists whom I find are rarely featured on albums of this nature, and the intensity of the 4/4 kick would be absolutely sublime for an industrial warehouse party, dirty and grimey, somewhere in the slums of New York. This is NOT a bad thing; it proves that music can be completely capable of synergizing with a particular physical setting and mood, and this album definitely lends itself to an overcrowdedly dirty, sweaty, midnight 'til 6 A.M. dance party.
On the whole, I find myself returning to this album mostly out of guilt; guilt stemming from the fact that, due to the fact that I have so many other albums more "worthy" of being spun in my collection that I rarely find time and patience to force myself into the kind of groove put forth here by these world-class DJ's.
If you're an absolute die-hard fan of Sasha and Digweed's work, listen to it before buying it.
If you're into something avante-guard and headed in an entirely different direction from most other progressive trance acts out there at the moment, coupled with a taste for gritty industrial noise intrusion, this album will become audible sex for you.
Three stars because it is not up to par with the majority of quality dance music, but its uniqueness and oddly progressive nature lend many a positive attribute to this double disc endeavor.

really boering.......2006-08-05
I was really dissapointed with this cd .Their northern exposur cd's is some of the best progressive trance mix out there. But it seemed they got the most boreing trance and mix it together .Trance has been getting a little boring now that every dj is trying to be progressive .Im tired of djs that are old enough to be my dad telling us how trance should sound
boring!.......2006-01-27
there are better cd's to get than this one. some songs are incredibly boring i want to shoot myself.
a must have.......2005-10-29
CD1: 5 stars
The first CD is smooth and sexy and the transitions are flawless. It is one of the most memorial mixes for me because of the pure brilliance of how everything is put together and the ease at which it flows. By the time the CD is over, you find yourself waking up from a daze or a dream and then it's time to hit the repeat button to experience it all over again! Trust me, this mix sounds boring and monotonous at first, but after a several listenings it comes alive and grabs your attention. I couldn't recommend a better mix.
CD2: 3 stars
For some reason this mix hasn't spoken to me yet. I'm not sure what happened in the creation process of this set, but the magic isn't there compared to CD1.
Overall Impression: 4.5 stars (weighted average since CD1 is so awesome)
Don't pass this gem by. This is a must have classic.
one of a kind!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-11-18
I'm not normally the type to write reviews on compilations, as a matter of fact, this will be my first and my last. I'd much rather spend the bulk of my time listening to electronic music rather than writing about it. Well, welcome to the day I write about it. It has been almost four long years since this set was released and the face of electronic has changed, oh, about, 400 times in those four years. However, the one element of electronic music that has remained steadfast is the fact that the artists all have the same purpose, to move their listeners. I'm not going to break this compilation down track by track, or do any of that useless nonsense, all you have to do is listen to it to know that every single record that is played will completely, and unapologetically, wear you out. I'm a devout fan of Sasha and Digger, but by no means do I proclaim that everything they put their stamp of approval on turns to gold. This music means too much to me to insult it in such a manner. As a matter of fact, I think the sum of both of the duo's latest works, although incredibly inventive, seems to be less interesting to me than their earlier material.
However, all of that being said, as long over due as it is, this compilation changed the landscape of this music forever. If you were fortunate enough to have been listening to house music when this was released, you know that this is the compilation that made all other dj's and producers run and hide while these globetrotting jocks sat in the corner with their unassuming smiles and overwhelming confidence. They knew, just as everyone else knew that this was one for the ages. From the intracacies of Sasha's mind-numbing soundscapes and groovealicious melodies, to the darker, driving forces that evolve in Digweed's turn on the decks, this mix paints a more accurate portrait of what house music was at that individual point in time than any mix will ever paint. Don't get me wrong, some of the best paint is reserved for these two artists, but they start with the same white canvas that everyone else starts with. I guess what I'm trying to get across is, "If you are not a electronic music junkie, but want to go out and buy one dj compilation, please for the love of all things good in life, go get this one, it just may make you a fan, and that is what all of us junkies want."

Primarily known as a progressive house DJ, first in Los Angeles, then in New York (as one of the famed club Twilo's DJ denizens), Sandra Collins uses this third in the Tranceport series to show off her trance techno chops. Collins puts her own suave stamp on the record with a cascade of languid beats and smart transitions. Moving almost imperceptibly, with Paul Oakenfold-like grace, between Ultra Violet's "Heaven" and into Deep's "Deeper Inside," Collins takes advantage of a momentary absence of melody to kick in a stronger beat and a new vocal motif. Elsewhere, swirling dance floor anthems such as LSG's "I'm Not Existing" give Glo-Stick wavers a chance to paint the ceiling with blue and green tracers. The whole thing moves along pretty briskly, too, with most tracks clocking in at under 5 or 6 minutes--a rarity on compilations like this.
Still, it's not perfect. The first track labors to start any sort of a rhythmic template, and the disc struggles with repetition, sometimes losing its focus while constructing a pattern. Overall, it lacks the sheer momentum of the last Tranceport record, DJ Dave Ralph's glorious Volume II (though equaling that mix would be an exceptional accomplishment). Nevertheless, by the last two tracks of the disc, much of Collins's earlier work pays off, and we're left with a good 20 minutes of solid danceability still to savor. --Matthew Cooke

The Deepest,Darkest Side of Trance.......2005-05-10
For one to appreciate this splendid album, you really have to be into trance. This is nothing like the first two tranceports, and is recommended for relaxing at the end of a long night of partying, for it will bring you down, and settle your mind.Sandra's style of "dark"trance is used mostly overseas by European dj's.At first I didnt understand this kind of trance, but now I have fully explored this "second reality"as I call it.This material is excellent, and flows from one track to the next.In fact I tranced out so bad that my roomate had to smack me to bring me out of it.This will always remain one of my favorite dance cd's.For the true dance fans that can handle something a lil different ,this one's for you.
another excellent transport.......2004-01-24
This is the 3rd volume of the set that started with Paul Oakenfold's legendary mix. My favorite of them all remains Max Grahams Transport 4. This mix like the first is a single cd and stands up well to the trance of the day. I still listen to the mix to this day and it is solid from beginning to end. There is little in the way of vocals and the tunes flow seamlessly from one to the next. Sandra Collins is clearly a first rate dj in a world dominated by men and this mix clearly and concisely demonstrates her considerable talents. If you like the others in this series, you will like this disc as well. Cheers and happy listening!!! rock the vote :)
Starts slow but ends with a bang.......2003-12-30
When I first heard this cd I was only impressed with the last track "airwave" by rank 1. But after listening to it a few more times all the way through on various road trips and whatever else, it really grew on me. I still find the begining a bit slow, but that's how I am with most mixed trance cd's. But this is a very good cd highly recomended. best tracks: 10-C'est Muzique (Armin Van Buuren Remix) - Shane and of course 11-Airwave (Original Mix) - Rank 1 this is actually one of my all time favorite trance tracks!!
Better the second time around.......2003-02-16
I forgot the last time I listened to this but whenever that was, the cd didn't leave much of an impression on me. Just the other day, I brought Sandra Collins cd into the office to listen to during the day and almost immediately I totally got into the groove. Sandra Collins definitely has the chops to play with the big boys when it comes to dj'ing. You just don't see or hear a lot of women in the same realm as the likes of trance giants Paul Oakenfold and Dave Ralph. Now while it is nice to see a woman like Sandra Collins playing trance music, I refuse to make a big issue of her gender. It is her music that is most important. I will admit that this cd is a bit uneven with its repetitive beats here and there. Most of the more memorable material comes from the last few tracks on the cd. I definitely liked this volume in the Tranceport series as opposed to the Max Graham mix set. Still I have to say that the Paul Oakenfold mix is my favorite of what I have heard in the Tranceport series.
Get's Better With Age.......2002-09-01
I've owned this CD for a long time now...and I have to say when I go back to it, I am so taken by it. Just listen to track 4...this is what it's about...music that just captures your whole mind and spirit, makes you move, and makes something deep inside you just want to release...great trance is its own drug...it's mind altering in its own way, and this is no exception.
