Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2004-02-20

Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11

After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16

When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13

This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.

I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.

So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!

1 out of 5 stars ... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

Love Asteria not only a great band/great new sound, great looking too!!! Can't ask for anything better than that! The only problem with this order was that 3 out of the 5 cases I received had broken cases. The CD themselves were fine.

5 out of 5 stars If you like to Have fun then buy this.......2007-03-25

Don't buy this Album if you are boring, because boring people will hate this album because it will make you want bounce off every wall in your room. This album is just plain fun, makes you want to DANCE! DANCE! DANCE! And we all know the boys and the girls go DANCING. Buy this album you will not regret it. Something for everyone except boring people.

2 out of 5 stars You've heard it before............2007-03-10

I'll make this quick....Asteria's "Slip into Something More Comfortable" is a nice effort by these NW Indiana guys but the problem is, its nothing that hasnt been done to death a million times already and alot better I may add. If your looking for something thats gonna be groundbreaking, move on.

Considering the average age in this band, the musicianship isnt bad. They do however show their age with the easy-cheez filled lyrics. As bad as that description is, the lyrics are worse.

Like I've said, their young kids so things could change but as of right now, I advise you to save your money and look in something else.

5 out of 5 stars Music Lovers Everywhere Need This Album!.......2004-11-04

This 5th album by East L.A.'s very own Blazers is one that every music lover needs to get and not just for yourself, but for your loved ones as well. It's a mixture of self-penned (9 songs) and covers (2 songs); each one is a musical work of art. The vocals of Ruben Guaderama & Manny Gonzalez, with some back up vocals by Jesus Cuevas & Robert Gaytan remind us all of why we love their music. One of the most powerful songs on the album is 'Our Time.' One of the most fun is the Lennon/McCartney tune, 'I Don't Want to Spoil the Party.' This is the 2nd album produced by Grammy Award winning producer and guitarist, Pete Anderson, who also appears on this album along with fellow musicians Mike Molina, Manuel Gonzales, Ruben Guarderrama, Jesus Cuevas, Bob Glaub, Jim E. Christie, Skip Edwards and Lee Thornberg. Go out and buy a copy or two or three! You'll love it!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great work from Jim Steinman.......2006-06-16

Jim Steinman, known for his operatic-style rock music (Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, etc.) has shown a more classic style of him in this one-of-a-kind musical. He takes several styles from the Civil War era and twists them with modern musical treatments.

You can hear many bits and pieces of music used in this album that Steinman uses much later in some of his rock songs, such as the intro to Making Love Out of Nothing at All, chorale phrases from The Future Ain't What it Used to Be and many others.

If you are a Steinman fan, this is a must!! Ray Earl Fox does a great job with the lyrics and they compliment the music to a tee.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it so much I got the rights!.......2004-05-26

Upon hearing this musical I loved it so much I went out and got the rights to direct it onstage this October in Cincinnati! I was always a fan of Jim Steinman's music, but I now also have a great respect for the lyrics of Ray Fox. Fox is a wordsmith much in the tradition of Stephen Sondheim, with intricate wordplay and quick patter. I would suspect that it was his early work with Fox on this project that led Steinman himself into developing into a world class, phrase twisting. lyricist himself. And of course you have Steinman's great ear for melody, but with a much different feel than his Rock music. A great lost treasure of American theater (come see it in October!)

5 out of 5 stars The Confidence Man.......2004-04-02

One of the undiscovered classics of the century. I hope to produce the first Australian production in November 2005. This show has a long and winding history, but I'll leave all that to the liner notes. Ray Errol Fox is one of the greatest lyricists of all time. I have never seen another talent like him - expect for Rupert Holmes - and these are the men I hold among my chief inspiration. Jim Steinman, the composer, whom many of you will remember from Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell has actually re-used many of these tunes in his subsequent projects. If you want the original version of his closing song from Pandora's Box, listen to Track One. "Milady" and "Something of this Masquerade may Follow" were re-used for TANZ DER VAMPIRE. Thank God this was finally released. It's a beautiful, heroic and courageous, discovered-at-last masterpiece of American musical theater.

5 out of 5 stars The Confidence Man.......2004-03-07

When a friend gave me "The Confidence Man" as a Christmas gift, he advised me that I would be in for a treat. I was somewhat skeptical since I had never heard of it, but since it was based on a Herman Melville novel, I was intrigued. And it had music by Jim Steinman. I liked the story, of course, and the music, but it was the lyrics (by Ray Eroll Fox) that captivated me. They are witty, literate and consistently surprising. I find something new to admire every time I listen. Anyone into American musical theater shouldn't be without this one!

          5 out of 5 stars Into Something......Good!.......2006-07-04

On 'Into Something' the not very well known Yusef Lateef proves why, at least during the first half of his long career, he was a monster in control of multiple instruments and styles, intermixed at his command. On this set he covers three standards and four originals and gives us a taste of his diversity and virtuosity. Opening with 'Rasheed', an eerie, eastern sounding, blues-drenched tune effectively played on oboe that floats you far above the pedestrian. 'When You're Smiling' gears down to a near somniferous pace with just enough honking to make you smile. 'Water Pistol' is a harder-edged original that's loaded with more than the title describes. Then a switch to a touch of the romantic with the beautiful, fluid, full-toned tenor on 'You've Changed'. Yusef switches to flute on 'I'll Remember April' and shows a unique style and total command of the woodwind - with some spry runs. He finishes up with two more originals in classic hard bop style, 'Koko's Tune and 'P Bouk', both solid. Barry Harris is on Piano on four songs, Herman Wright on bass and the giant, Elvin Jones on drums, who gets some short stretches to showcase his mastery - a classic rhythm section. If you're not familiar with Lateef this is a great place to start. The man is an underappreciated master. So if you are a jazz fan of the true classic era (50's and 60's) you owe it to youself to hear this. His cd 'Eastern Sounds' is also highly recommended among others.

5 out of 5 stars Where the CD Henry?.......2007-06-07

I just love the album plug me into something and saw there was a twofor, but when i got here it was'nt available. but only by seller it was and it was too pricey what a shame. i so wanted to hear southern band and evergreen once again i own the lp but want to get it on a cd format. So To The Powers That Be Please Release this recording again. From a Henry Gross Fan, Well I don't want to shock you, but i got a plan to find me some smokin yankees and make a Sountern-- Band!
