Farmers Market presents another stellar opportunity to familiarize yourself with Stefan Winter's post-JMT label, Winter & Winter. A Norwegian and Bulgarian quintet, Farmers Market picks up music from all over the map and plays it with a part-Balkan, part-jazz sensibility that's ultimately uncategorizable. The entire session is packed with cameos and guest spots from Bulgarian musicians and singers, each of whom changes things ever so slightly (or dramatically) for each track. A vocal choir reminiscent in tone of the Bulgarian Women's Choir sings the brief "Young Girl Made a Crown of Forest Flowers," and for a spell, Farmers Market feels like a forward-looking set of genre-bending Bulgarian music made in a sometimes folkier, sometimes hipper frame than much of the Downtown New York Balkan stuff. Then guitarist and accordionist Stian Carstensen takes the band in another, grittier direction with "Les Paul, More John" and along a more traditional dance-oriented trail with "Jog Trot" and the fusion-tinged "Jabber." Bulgarian saxophonist Trifon Trifonov gives all the horn lines a clipped, quick-cutting feel that's almost staccato, a nice touch especially on the urban-funky "Ornamental Boogie." It's fun, pristinely recorded music footed in the Balkans, quick-cutting jazz, and the kind of catholic approach that's made Winter & Winter such a distinctive record label. --Andrew Bartlett
From Jazziz
Balkan-jazz crossover may be well-established by now, especially on this side of the Atlantic. But seemingly from out of nowhere comes the Finnish/Bulgarian quintet Farmers Market with a self-titled album that kicks the burgeoning genre sideways a notch or three.
The album's first two tunes are fairly respectful of Bulgarian tradition, the second a feature for quartet of guest vocalists who sing in a style made familiar by Les Mystère des Voix Bulgares. Not until the third track, "Graovo Dance," is there any indication of the album's subversive bent, as growling electric guitar notes lead into a funky drum'n'bass-influenced groove and a thumping bassline, while folkish flutes twitter above and tablas burble below.
From there, it's anything goes. "Les Paul, more John" sets a Beatles-esque bassline in 9/8 under guitar solos evoking Nashville one moment, psychedelia the next. "Some Fag Rag" uses ragtimey piano and banjo to bite Spike Jones, Frank Zappa, and Glenn Miller in the space of three-and-a-half minutes. "Jog Trot" edges into Laswell territory with dubby bass and tabla, while "The Straight One" tucks in a bit of King Sunny Adé's juju magic.
Nearly indescribable, and packaged with the arthouse chic customary of Winter & Winter, Farmers Market is one of the most unexpected delights of the year.

Off the charts!.......2001-10-15
The closest Americans have come to the imaginative mix of musical styles is probably "Brave Combo", but the two groups really aren't comparable.
You've got to experience this one!

Product Description
If You've Had A Long Day... These tunes relax you, soothe your soul. You'll want to close your eyes and drift. That's because they speak to you directly. There's nothing frivolous here, just a beautiful voice, and the most compatible jazz guitar you could hope for. Listen to this a while and you'll feel good about yourself again. You'll be yourself again: happy, personable, intimate, romantic. Listen to: In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning, then see if you can say it isn't true! ... Further words to describe this CD: charming, soothing, smooth, listenable, mellow, laid-back, understated... Lou Ann Gurney and Leonard Kubo live and perform on the Big Island of Hawaii. Their CD has an undeniable Island influence. In fact, four of the songs are jazzy Hawaiian Island songs: Pikake, Windy Day At Hilo Bay, Plumeria, and At The Hilo Farmers Market -- the latter three written by Kubo...This CD is a good example of how a good solid sound can be achieved with a fine singer and relatively simple instrumentation. Most of the songs are laid down with only a singer, a guitar, and another lead instrument--a flute, sax, or another guitar. Lou Ann Gurney has a wonderful voice: it is like a good still life painting: detailed and clear, precise, and evoking a lot of feeling. Leonard Kubo plays a very compatible rhythm guitar, and adds a bass line too. On some cuts he plays solo guitar; on others he plays a spare, bluesy lead guitar. Robin Jensen and Richard Lee play marvelous solos, and Peter Quackenbush provides a swinging, lively percussion.
